July 28, 2009 On October 29, 2009, the GLBT Historical Society is sponsoring “Unmasked,” our annual gala to be held in The Green Room at the San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center. The gala is one of our organization’s most important fundraising initiatives of the year, and is critical to our commitment to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of GLBT people and the communities that support them. The Historical Society has had an exciting year highlighted by the opening of our Castro exhibit, Passionate Struggle: Dynamics of San Francisco’s GLBT History. This groundbreaking exhibit details the places, politics, passions, and people that have laid the foundation for the GLBT community today. The exhibit is a sample of our vast archives, which span many decades. We house some of the most important materials in the world related to GLBT history. If you haven’t already, please stop by and visit us. Our archives are at our core location on San Francisco’s Museum Row and are open and easily accessible to students, historians, academics, and anyone interested in learning more about our shared heritage. For example, the filmmakers of the critically acclaimed motion picture Milk relied on our archives to successfully recreate and articulate Harvey’s story for a broad global audience. The Historical Society is unique in its mission, and serves a vital role in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our programs, our survival, and our growth will only be realized with the continued support of our friends and sponsors. This includes our ultimate goal for a permanent museum in San Francisco. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our individual, corporate, and political sponsors in years past. We understand these are challenging economic times, but as a result we need your help more than ever. We ask that you please recognize the importance of the Historical Society, and continue your support of an organization that is critical to preserving our proud history. A sponsorship and donation form is enclosed. Additionally you will find the silent auction contribution form. The silent auction is a key source of revenue at the gala and we encourage you to contribute in this way. For more information about the GLBT Historical Society, please visit our website at http://glbthistory.org. Should you have any additional questions about the Historical Society, the gala, or the silent auction, please feel free to call us at 415.777.5455. Thanks for your consideration in supporting our cause. We wish you and your families all the best.

UNMASKED the Event! “This is your night!” That was what the SFPD once told the GLBT community on Halloween. Many years ago there was a law on the books that forbade people from dressing in a fashion to deceive. Originally this law was used to litigate against con artists posing as physicians, clergy and other trusted members of the community looking to take financial advantage of unwitting citizens. By 1930’s the law was being used against women and men who dressed in drag. Professional impersonators at Finocchios and other venues were allowed to perform, but off stage drag was not tolerated. This all changed on Halloween night as the police declined to enforce laws against impersonation or deception of any kind. During the 50’s and early 60’s everyone who was anyone would congregate in and around the Black Cat Café on Montgomery Street. Those days have passed and freedom of expression lives year round in San Francisco! Come join us as we celebrate the unmasking of our history in the face of forced secrecy, discrimination and inequality. Our celebration will take place in the San Francisco War Memorial’s elegant Green Room, with its stunning loggia overlooking City Hall. Bring a mask, bid on a celebrity inspired mask, or make your own at the event and get into the spirit of the coming Halloween weekend! We look forward to seeing you there!
