Dean’s List Greetings! It was wonderful to see many of you at our first gathering of the year at Ms. Rose’s Fine Food and Cocktails in West Ashley on September 14! It was great to see faces both new and familiar as we en-joyed some delicious food and drinks in a relaxed setting. Chuck Lippy surprised us with a chapter banner that was unearthed from the home of a former Dean and also gave his first invocation as Chaplain of our chapter. We welcomed a few new members, shared stories, and Jason Pedeaux and I ran our fourth annual Organ Trivia contest. Congratulations to Bill Gudger, Mark Bebensee, and Nancy Lefter on their first place finish, taking home the prize of a Kristina Shtegman CD (Kris-tina is a Russian organist who performed at the 2015 L’Organo Festival). For those who missed the meeting, try your hand with these questions from the quiz (answers on page 13):1. How many ranks of pipes does Philadelphia’s

Wannamaker Organ, the largest in the world, contain? A) 328 B) 463 C) 502 D) 688

2. What Englishman was appointed in 1676 as organist of Westminster Abbey? A) Jeremiah Clarke B) Henry Purcell C) John Blow

3. Which country lays claim to the oldest play-able pipe organ, built in 1435 and residing at the Basilica of Valere?

Please come out for our October program. It will take place Monday, October 19 at 6:30 PM at the newly refurbished St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church (405 King St, downtown). Entitled “Give Your Hymns the Gerre Hancock Treatment,” the program will be presented by our own David Frid-dle. David studied with Gerre Hancock and will be sharing the techniques he learned from one of the 20th-century’s foremost hymn players. David asks that you bring a hymn you would like to play so that the workshop can be as hands-on as possi-ble. We will dine together at 6:30 in the social hall ($10) and then make our way to the sanctuary for the 7:30 program. Hope to see you there! Do you have any professional concerns weighing on your mind? Chapter member Porter Remington is here to help! Porter has years of experience help-

ing chapter members talk through professional concerns and gladly volunteers her time to be a confidential resource for you. So if you have job-re-lated issues—salary concerns, letter of agreement/contract, church expectations, relationship be-tween staff members, and the like—please don’t hesitate to contact Porter at [email protected] or (843) 388-8648. Finally, I’d like to extend a hearty greeting to each of our new members. We are honored to have nine additions to our friendly chapter. They are:• Alan Hunter from Kingsport, TN• C. Justin Smith a dual member living in Wilm-

ington, NC• Janet Elshazly, Charleston Southern University• Joseph Peeples, finishing up doctoral work at

Indiana University, and relocating here in No-vember

• John Stender, dual member with Lowcountry and new music director at St. Helena’s in Beau-fort

• Joshua Nichols, lead accompanist and admin-istrator at Christ Church Presbyterian in Mount Pleasant

• Paula Clyde, Organist/Choirmaster at Divine Redeemer Catholic in Hanahan

• Richard Scott, chapter friend• Sue Harmon, chapter friend

AnnouncementsBefore You Buy More Music, Check Out The AGO Free Music Exchange! There is much music in the AGO Music Exchange —more than 400 listings for organ solo alone: There are works by individual composers and col-lections, in addition to over 50 for Christmas, sev-eral for Weddings and Funerals; plus Piano; Duets; General Music Books; Organ Plus (1 or 2 instru-ments). It’s a 4 drawer file cabinet, full. A pdf cata-log is available by email: [email protected]. Still in process of being cataloged are a couple of hundred choral anthems and solo songs. If you need it, chances are it’s there. The catalog isn’t complete, but if you’re interested, email me and I’ll send what I have. As always, you are welcome to come, browse, play through (there’s a piano there), take what you want, leave any music you no longer need (you don’t have to bring music to take music). The exchange is located upstairs in the sanctu-ary building at Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. Available during business hours (M-F 9–4). Please contact Ju-lia Harlow, [email protected] or 843–870–1048 to schedule a time (so someone at the church can let you in). If you absolutely cannot get there during business hours but are interested, let me know and I’ll try to work with your schedule. Feel free to get music for your students as well. AGO EventOn behalf of Dr. Rhonda Furr, our Convention Coordinator, greetings to your Chapter from the Steering Committee of the 2016 National Conven-tion of the American Guild of Organists. We here in Houston are excited to be your hosts for what promises to be an outstanding celebration of our art. We would greatly appreciate the publicity of the convention dates (June 19–23, 2016) and web-site in your chapter newsletters and events in the coming months. Registration opens on October 15 with a special low rate for those are able to register that soon. The main convention website is www.AGOHouston2016.com. Any convention, especially one as unique as

ours, relies not only on funds from registration costs and advertisers, but also on donors at the local and nation-wide level to ensure its success. We hope that your chapter will consider partner-ing with us by becoming an underwriter in any amount. More specific underwriting opportunities as well as the convention mailing address can be found at www.agohouston2016.com/get-involved/sponsor, but general gifts are always welcomed with our gratitude.

Play Hymns Like Gerre HancockPlease come prepared to play one of your favor-ite hymns. I’ll pay homage to my former teacher Gerre Hancock by passing along some of the tips and tricks he taught me. We’ll discuss some gen-eral guidelines about hymn playing, I’ll demon-strate some of Gerre’s techniques, then I want to work with anyone who’d like to learn more about improving hymn leading/accompanying while si-multaneously benefiting the other attendees.

Requiescat in pace Ben HuttoBen Hutto passed away on September 29 after a nine-month battle with cancer. Ben grew up in Charleston and was choral director at Porter-Gaud School and organist/choirmaster of the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul in the 1970s and 80s. He served as Dean of our AGO chapter and was one of the founders of the L’Organo series. After serving at Christ Church Charlotte he went to Washington where he was chair of performing arts and choral director at St. Alban’s School and Cathedral Girls School. He also took on duties as organist/choirmas-ter of St. John’s, Lafayette Square, the “Church of the Presidents.” Ben was a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music and the recipient of an honorary doctor-ate from Virginia Theological Semi-nary.

13 Voluntary Trumpet –October 2015

EtceteraWhen Todd Monsell asked me to serve as chaplain of the Charleston Chapter of the AGO, I first in-quired about the duties and responsibilities of the position. Since we haven’t had a chaplain in some time (or maybe ever), he replied that I could pret-ty well define the position as I wanted, although offering an occasional invocation would be appro-priate as would assisting in rituals such as the in-stallation of officers and board members. Then I asked, “Why me?” Todd suggested it was because I was both an organist (of sorts) and an ordained clergy person. When I arrived in Charles-ton four years ago, many of you knew me first as an occasional freelance substitute organist and then since October 2012 as organist at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Some of you knew that I had retired as the Mar-tin Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Only a few, I suspect, knew that I was indeed ordained in the United Methodist Church. So I am here as one of you, doing what many of you do, albeit with my formal training in religious studies. But I am also here for you. There might be a time when something arises in your work with a pastor where you play that you would welcome having a sounding board before you talk with the pastor. I can be that sounding board. There may be life events that you’d simply like to discuss—sickness, the death of a family member, a marriage, whatever—with someone who would keep his/her mouth shut. I can do that. You can help me define the role of the chapter chaplain as you make use of my presence among you. Together we can make the chapter chaplain an integral part of our work as a community of organists whose mission is to enrich and transform the lives of all who hear our music.
