3 Voluntary Trumpet –December 2015

Dean’s List Dear Members,

It’s the coldest day of the season as I write to you on this November morning. We experienced tem-peratures in the 30s overnight, making the Low-country feel more like Maine than South Caroli-na. And yet, despite the cold, it is my hope that you experienced (or will experience, depending on when David publishes this newsletter) a Thanks-giving full of warmth and good cheer with family and friends. We had a most enriching evening at Charles-ton Southern University with clinician Dr. Valerie Bullock on November 16. Entitled “Our Utmost for His Highest (or “How to Have an Effective Choral Rehearsal”), Dr. Bullock’s presentation impart-ed many pearls of wisdom. New warm-ups were learned, the psychology of interacting with singers was examined, common choral problems were ex-amined and solved, and music was sung through. We heartily thank Dr. Bullock for sharing her wisdom with us, and for answering all our many questions. Please do take some time to examine the Volun-tary Trumpet Musical Events calendar to view all of the holiday concert/lessons and carols offerings happening around the Lowcountry in our calen-dar. Many involve your colleagues! Finally, a reminder that since we are all busy bees this month, we will not meet in December. How-ever, our next gathering does take place just after the New Year. Doug Ludlum will host his annual AGO Epiphany Party on Friday, January 8 at 7PM. If you’ve never attended, please consider coming out to Doug’s lovely home and enjoying some de-licious food and drinks with your fellow organists. It’s always a great time, and with Christmas just passed, it’s a chance to see your colleagues at their most relaxed!

May your days be merry and bright, [email protected]

9 Voluntary Trumpet –December 2015

AnnouncementsBefore You Buy More Music, Check Out The AGO Free Music Exchange! There is much music in the AGO Music Exchange —more than 400 listings for organ solo alone: There are works by individual composers and col-lections, in addition to over 50 for Christmas, sev-eral for Weddings and Funerals; plus Piano; Duets; General Music Books; Organ Plus (1 or 2 instru-ments). It’s a 4 drawer file cabinet, full. A pdf cata-log is available by email: [email protected]. Still in process of being cataloged are a couple of hundred choral anthems and solo songs. If you need it, chances are it’s there. The catalog isn’t complete, but if you’re interested, email me and I’ll send what I have. As always, you are welcome to come, browse, play through (there’s a piano there), take what you want, leave any music you no longer need (you don’t have to bring music to take music). The exchange is located upstairs in the sanctu-ary building at Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. Available during business hours (M-F 9–4). Please contact Ju-lia Harlow, [email protected] or 843–870–1048 to schedule a time (so someone at the church can let you in). If you absolutely cannot get there during business hours but are interested, let me know and I’ll try to work with your schedule. Feel free to get music for your students as well. AGO EventOn behalf of Dr. Rhonda Furr, our Convention Coordinator, greetings to your Chapter from the Steering Committee of the 2016 National Conven-tion of the American Guild of Organists. We here in Houston are excited to be your hosts for what promises to be an outstanding celebration of our art. We would greatly appreciate the publicity of the convention dates (June 19–23, 2016) and web-site in your chapter newsletters and events in the coming months. Registration opens on October 15 with a special low rate for those are able to register that soon. The main convention website is www.AGOHouston2016.com. Any convention, especially one as unique as

ours, relies not only on funds from registration costs and advertisers, but also on donors at the local and nation-wide level to ensure its success. We hope that your chapter will consider partner-ing with us by becoming an underwriter in any amount. More specific underwriting opportunities as well as the convention mailing address can be found at www.agohouston2016.com/get-involved/sponsor, but general gifts are always welcomed with our gratitude.

Positions AvailableMepkin Abbey, Moncks CornerMepkin Abbey is seeking to hire an organist to play for their Sunday morning Mass, which takes place at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday. The ideal candidate will be a good musician, appreciative of the wonderful opportunity to work with Mepkin’s monastic community in this capaci-ty and not mind the 45-minute drive from Charles-ton through some of the Lowcountry’s most beau-tiful rural settings each week. It would be helpful if the individual is familiar with Catholic liturgy. A rising, serious, and committed organ student of an AGO member could be considered. If interested, or if you have recommendations for a potential can-didate for this position, please contact Abbot Stan Gumula at the monastery, 843–761–8509.

St. Paul United Methodist, St. MatthewsSt. Paul’s is seeking an organist substitute OR a regular organist and choir director. The substitute pay is negociable, and the organist/choir director position pays $12,000 a year. Contact the Rev. Sara Relaford ([email protected]).
