WE’RE ALLTIGERS

Because our student body is so large and diverse, finding your place in it can feel

daunting. That’s why living on campus is such a great choice for so many people.

The U of M takes pride in creating a culturally diverse and inclusive learning

community. We want everyone to feel at home here.

WE WANT EVERYONE TO FEEL AT HOME HERE.

When you live on campus, making friends is easier. Getting involved in school activities becomes less intimidating. You’re right in the middle of it all — people, events, classes, 24-hour labs, libraries, and so much more. Wake up 20 minutes before class starts and still be on time. Walk down a hallway and meet a new friend.

Everything you need is right here, from great food to free Wi-Fi and

laundry services to cultural events and student activities. You don’t have to worry

about the hassles of traffic or parking. Our free Blue Line shuttle (with stops near all

residence halls) moves you around campus easily. And 24-hour patrols and guest

check-in procedures enhance your safety. More than anything, life on campus is

loaded with new experiences that can’t be replicated anywhere else. Ask anyone

living here, and they’ll tell you — residence life really lets you Plug into the Blue.

Statistics show that students who live on campus have higher GPAs. They’re also more likely to attend class and graduate on time.

EAT HEREWhether it’s a snack or an entire meal, we keep up with what’s

popular and in demand, including ethnic and vegetarian

choices. Sit and dine in our all-you-can-eat cafeteria or stop

by one of our popular retail brands for meals to go.

Sign up for one of several meal plan options when you apply for

housing. Off-campus students can sign up anytime online or at

the Tiger Den.

We know affordability is important. If you

compare all the costs, living on campus actually saves you more. All your payments

are consolidated into one, so you avoid the

inconvenience of paying separate bills.

You’re only responsible for your portion

of your living situation (no chasing down

roommates for rent). No surprise bills, no

hassles. Just one single fee.

Whether you’re interested in a traditional room or sharing an apartment with friends, the U of M has a living space for you.

LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITIES

Some majors and programs have optional Learning Communities.

ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN HOUSINGArchitecture and interior design education fosters the learning skills needed for the discovery,

integration, application, and sharing of knowledge over a lifetime. The Architecture + Design

Community common areas serve as a multi-function place for various activities, including special

mentoring sessions, student work critiques, and other supplemental learning and professional

development opportunities. For more information, please contact [email protected] or call 901.678.2724.

EMERGING LEADERS HOUSINGEmerging Leaders Housing is a neighborhood of exceptional students seeking to gain and

enhance leadership skills. Our students participate in the University of Memphis’ Emerging

Leaders Scholarship Program (ELP) and work closely with faculty and staff to actively engage

in leadership education. ELP students participate in a four-year, intensive leadership training

experience designed to enhance personal leadership and contribute significantly to a balanced,

well-rounded college experience. Emerging Leaders Housing gives residents the opportunity to

live in the type of community they will some day work to create. For more information, please visit

memphis.edu/leadership_programs or call 901.678.8679.

ENGINEERING HOUSINGEngineering Housing allows students to develop peer relations, collaborate with other

engineering disciplines, and prepare to enter the workforce. Residents are paired with alumnae

and professional engineering mentors to network, learn career opportunities and share tips for

collegiate and professional success. Members tour Memphis industries, engage faculty and staff

outside of the classroom, and collaborate with peers in other engineering disciplines. For more

information, please call 901.678.2017 or 901.678.4852.

FIRST GENERATION HOUSINGA First Scholars InitiativeFirst Generation Housing emphasizes the shared experience and sense of responsibility many

first generation college students feel as they navigate college life. Students participate in a

common academic course during their first semester that focuses on the development of

academic skills and strategies proven to enhance student success. Members also benefit from

mandatory one-on-one academic coaching, in-hall study space, and community mentorship

from a University of Memphis first generation student leader. For more information, please

call 901.678.6041.

17

Page 18: UofM Residence Life : 2015

FIRST SCHOLARS LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITYFirst Scholars focus on community and campus engagement, leadership development, and successfully transitioning to

college as a first-generation college student. Participants take the same ACAD 1100 course taught by the First Scholars

Program Coordinator to foster a deep understanding of the academic skills and strategies proven to enhance student

success. Each participant is assigned a peer mentor to help navigate the first year. First Scholars will work with the

Program Coordinator to form an individual strategic plan to meet their academic, social and co-curricular goals.

For more information, please contact [email protected] or call 901.678.6041.

HELEN HARDIN HONORS HOUSINGHelen Hardin Honors Housing gives first-year and upper class students the opportunity to take classes, participate

in social activities, and live with other academically talented students. Students take core interdisciplinary courses

together during the first year in the program and create a strong learning community. Members are exposed to

social and academic programs to enhance academic and personal success such as a welcome dinner, pizza parties

with professors and study abroad workshops. For more information, please call 901.678.2690.

LA CASA HISPANA HOUSINGLa Casa Hispana Housing is a Spanish language immersion that gives students an opportunity to improve

fluency and accuracy, while exploring Hispanic culture. Members are able to connect with students who share

similar interests, academic and personal goals. Students engage with the local Hispanic community and

organizations, and study relevant Hispanic social issues. For more information, please call 901.678.2507.

MUSIC SCHOLARS HOUSINGMusic Scholars Housing provides students with formal and informal activities to advance their musical

and academic development along with real-world interaction with faculty. Members are encouraged to

evaluate the place and purpose of music in their lives as a career, creative outlet, lifelong avocation or

a means of serving their community. Music Scholars are required to take Music Theory I and II, music

history, applied music lessons, and large ensembles. For more information, call 901.678.3018.

PRE-HEALTH PROFESSIONS HOUSINGPre-Health Professions Housing provides a vibrant, interactive environment for students pursuing

a career in healthcare. Members explore various health professions through guest speakers,

readings, discussions, and workshops through an integrated systems approach. Pre-Health

Professions Housing gives students extra support and access to additional advising from a

dedicated advisor. For more information, please call 901.678.5454.

ROTC HOUSINGROTC Housing facilitates a strong sense of connection and belonging, and lays the

foundation for successful learning and intellectual growth. ROTC Housing offers a unique

curriculum, positive atmosphere and rewarding environment to help members have a

first-class collegiate experience. All military branches offered under the College of Arts &

Sciences are represented. Residents participate in out of class activities to further their
