Have you ever thought about how you want
to be remembered by your family and
community? Planned giving is one way to pass
on your values after your lifetime. Leaving a
legacy through planned giving makes you part
of something larger than all of us.
The charitable gift annuity (CGA) is a great
example of a planned gift that can supplement
income while supporting Cassia, Augustana
Regent, or a specific program. When you
purchase a CGA, you receive a tax deduction
for the gift and regular income based on
current annuity rates.*
Gifts of any size have a profound impact on
others by helping to provide housing, health
care, community-based services and
advocacy. To learn more, please call Therese
Cain, gift officer, at 952-855-5189.
*Current CGA rates: as of January 2, 2020:
a 75-year-old donor receives an interest
rate of 5.8%, an 80-year-old receives 6.9%
and an 85-year-old receives 8.0%.

Winter 2020
As we celebrate Christmas and
look forward to a New Year, I am
reminded of my mother who
passed away four years ago
today—four days before
Christmas. Her faith and love for
her family warmed our hearts
even though we are sad she is no
longer physically with us. She is
in heaven and at peace. I am
grateful for the support and the love we re-
ceived.
Family Matters!
Family is defined as: “two or more people who
share goals and values and have a long-term
commitment to one another.” This definition
describes my immediate family for which I am
extremely grateful, as well as my work family.
Our residents, our coworkers, our Cassia
communities are all part of your and my
extended family.
Families protect, support and help one
another. Over the years, wise men and women
discovered that families are the
foundation for a better world. Two years ago
Augustana and Elim merged to become
stronger together in serving older adults in our
communities. Our new name was announced:
Cassia. The biblical word Cassia means “heart
of a servant”. It reflects the Christian heritage of
both organizations and their compassion to
serve people, as modeled by Jesus Christ.
Cassia brings together 210 years of experience
from wise individuals, touching thousands of
lives. Our new parent organization sets the
foundation for our work family. Over the past
year, members from many departments,
disciplines and levels of Cassia, have been
meeting to create a Customer Excellence
platform for Cassia. Melissa Grassl, our Activity
Assistant is a member. The desire of this
group was to develop a platform that would
weave our mission, vision and values into our
everyday life at every Cassia community,
including Augustana Regent. We are excited
to share with you the “I AM Cassia” Customer
Excellence Platform! There will be multiple
dimensions unveiled, of which StandUP is the
first step of our journey. StandUp was rolled
out at the Regent on November 11, 2019.
StandUP is providing all Cassia employees an
opportunity to engage in our mission, vision,
and service standards as we go about our daily
tasks within our communities. To date, we
have witnessed how our employees are uniting
together, by encouraging and uplifting each
other and forming a foundation for a better
community and a better family. We come
together daily to share stories from across our
communities, We are hopeful that as you notice
our employees embrace these standards and
live them on a daily basis, you will also feel that
we are making the Regent a better community,
by supporting one another, and sharing similar
goals and values, we all will be proud to say
“I AM Cassia!”

If you or your loved one loves to sing and you live in or near Apple Valley, you may want to learn more about the choir at the Apple Valley campus, which began life in 2016. Singers include residents at Apple Valley Villa and Augustana Care Health and Rehabilitation of Apple Valley, along with Augustana Open Circle Adult Day members. Family and volunteers are welcome, too.
The choir is directed by music therapists Michelle Doree and Cora Cromer. Choir members choose the selections performed in two annual concerts and sing a wide variety of songs. “It’s a really welcoming group,” says choir member Mariann Greaves. “The group and directors support you to build your self-confidence. It’s something I look forward to each week. It’s a fun experience and time passes so quickly at choir.” To learn more, please contact::Cora Cromer at 952-236-2524 or [email protected]

So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new
creation: everything old has passed away;
see, everything has become new!
2 Corinthians 5:17
Happy New Year! I always look forward to a
new year, a clean slate, a fresh start. I wonder
with hopeful expectation about all the great
things that will happen. Sometimes I wonder
who will enter the gates of heaven. And, I
sometimes make resolutions or things I want
to try to do in the new year. At a 2020
leadership planning retreat, Paul Annett, our
leadership consultant used these words “pour
gold in our shoes” to encourage us to think
about all the things that have happened, all
the goals we set and achieved, and to give
thanks to God for a wonderful year. I
encourage you to take some time in this new
year, while it’s still new, to pour gold in your
shoes. Give thanks for all the things you’ve
done, the places you’ve been, the people
you’ve seen, knowing that God is always with
us, creating us a new. If there were some
tough times during the year, you might look
closely to see how God was at work holding
you, bringing you comfort and filling you with
peace. 2020 is here. The new has come, the
old is gone. Celebrate and give thanks! May
you be filled with hope and wonder about
this new year.
Let us pray: Gracious and loving God, you are
always creating us new. In you, we find our
hope and expectation, our comfort and our
peace. Thank you for being with us at every
moment this past year. Thank you for
promising to be with us through every moment
in the new year. Keep us awake and alert to
your presence and your promises
that are true for us always. Amen.
