Putnam County Growing Strong! Putnam County had a great year in economic growth and investment in the last 12 months. Georgia-Pacific has completed a $70 million modernization project of some systems in the mill's power generation area. This investment brings total current investments at the mill to nearly $100 million to make the mill safer, more efficient and more competitive. This project has also generated more than 150 jobs for contractors and vendors dur- ing construction and installation. Florida Power and Light is in the process of building two solar farms in our county, which means an additional $175 million in capital investments, and over 200 temporary construction jobs. New construction by Clay Electric, Flowers Baking Com- pany, St Johns River Dental and Hampton Inn to name a few, invested millions more. The improved economic environment in Putnam County has resulted in an additional 1,100 jobs over the same 12 months. Our unemployment is currently 5.6%, the lowest level since 2006. The reopening of Forterra Building Products (formerly Hanson Pipe) and Sunbelt Rentals, along with expansions at Veritas Steel, True Truss and others, contributed many of these new jobs. Currently, EmployFlorida.com shows over 500 open jobs in a 10-mile radius of Palatka, and as construction begins on the FPL solar farms, an additional 200 to 400 construction workers will be needed for those projects. If anyone you know is looking for a job, please tell them to visit www.employflorida.com Other indicators of progress include increases in retail sales, sales tax collections, bed tax revenues (paid by visitors), and labor force numbers.
