IN THIS ISSUE Kamusta?

In this issue of the alumni newsletter, love is definitely in the air! Our memories of school revolve largely around the people we have met and who have touched our lives in ways we sometimes could only imagine. In this issue let us take a look at the lasting (and life-changing) effect some of these relationships have made.

Also, new events are on the horizon! So better check out if there is something brewing in your corner of the world! If not, why don’t you start one? Let us help you.

As always, for any questions, concerns, or help tracking that long-lost friend back in Middle School down, let us know. We’re more than happy to help!

TEENAGE DREAM Friendships forged within these walls run deep;

every once in a while, some run even deeper.

Many of us can attest to the lifetime bonds that were made back as a secret handshake during elementary recess or a shared moment at a high school house party. As the only thing permanent is change, some of these bonds change form and intensity over time. Every once in a while, though, these ties are reconnected; some bonds, in fact, prove to be stronger than most.

Just this past summer, three particular alumni happenings piqued our curiosity. Love was in the air! Two weddings and an engagement, all of which involved alumni, made us think and pause. It is true that ISM does indeed have a historically proven success rate when it comes to love matches. Is there something in the cafeteria water, perhaps? Whatever it is, it cannot be denied that, within these school walls, relationships made can last a lifetime. So, without further ado, we congratulate these three alumni couples from the bottom of our hearts. May you continue to make happy memories!

How did you two meet? Roxie: John and I actually met in elementary school: I was in 4th grade, he was in 5th. He was class of '81 and I was '82. His brother, James, and I were in Mr. Carretero's class together (while) John and my brother, Bryan, played baseball for the MPC Mustangs. How did you reconnect? Roxie: John and I reconnected on Facebook in 2008. My dear childhood friend, Uzma Khan, had started a Yahoo! group several years prior with a core group of IS friends. When Facebook emerged, she moved the group there and, as you know, the IS connections multiplied quickly. John "friended" me, and we became digital friends quickly over a common world view and many shared interests. At the time I was living in Los Angeles and he in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I was born (John was born in Manila). My daughter and I moved to the Bay Area in late 2009. It took John and me a while to get together in person but when we finally did in 2010 we fell in love almost immediately. How did John propose? John proposed on a beautiful sunny day in San Francisco, on top of Telegraph Hill, overlooking the Bay. We had a rare double flyover by the locally famous Telegraph Hill Parrots right after I accepted, which we took as an auspicious San Francisco blessing! Ed. Note: The big day is set on October 20th! Congratulations, John and Roxie!

John and Roxie in 1974

John and Roxie’s romance was 38 years in the making. They met all those years ago in Manila as elementary school children. Thanks to technology, perfect timing, and a chance encounter, John and Roxie reunited, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Ray del Rosario, and Sasha Elizalde.

How did you two meet? Sasha: We met at ISM on the first day of eighth grade in humanities class. Our last names being merely a letter apart, we were automatically seated next to each other and we hit it off instantly. Of course at the beginning all we did was bicker and debate about everything under the sun, and then it turned into a real friendship, complete with secret sharing and all. I had a crush on him back then but didn’t act on it or even entertain it for fear of ruining our friendship. First impressions of each other? Sasha on Ray: Hard-headed, stubborn, annoying, haha! But a real sweetheart and a true comedian underneath it all! Ray on Sasha: Pretty and quiet dragon-lady with big shoes, who probably hated me 'cause I kept bugging her in class. I was afraid she'd kick me and that’d be the end. How did you maintain the connection after graduating from high school? Sasha: After graduating from high school we actually lost touch, until Facebook became big and Ray found me on it. A few months later, in the summer of ‘09 he came back to Manila for a 10-day vacation from Pepperdine University. We met up for coffee, which eventually turned into a lunch date followed by a proper date, and followed further by more dates. What’s the one thing about Ray we would be surprised to find out? Sasha: He’s very focused and hardworking. When he has his mind on something about work, it is impossible to distract him or sway his mind from that one task at hand.

Sasha and Ray are all smiles as they are pronounced husband and wife; Alumni, mostly from Class of 2004, came out to the after party!

The couple caught in a tender moment right after the ceremony

What’s your most favorite thing about Sasha? Ray: How much time and space do I have? I could go on forever, this is a tricky question, I’m not going to lie. There’s just too many things I love about Sash and continue to discover more things every day. If I must pinpoint one thing, to put it simply, she’s such a good person. It radiates from her so much so that she has this unique ability to make everything special. The question every woman wants to know: How did Ray propose? Sasha: In the most romantic fashion I could ever hope for. One afternoon while writing a paper for school, he said he hit a writer’s block and asked if I wanted to go out for a short walk to help clear his mind. We went up to a cliff overlooking the ocean on Pointe Dume in Malibu. It was at sunset and seagulls were flying overhead. He suddenly got down on his knee and popped the question. He completely took me by surprise that I didn’t know how to react and all I could muster was “Hey look, seagulls!”

Sunset at Point Dume, Malibu- a favorite piece of paradise of locals

What was it like planning your dream wedding? Sasha: Stressful and nerve-wracking! We had originally planned a small intimate ceremony somewhere out of town like Tagaytay, then we realized our guest list was getting bigger and we decided to move it to Manila. I gave every bit of effort and energy I had to it. For six straight months all I did was speak, think, breathe the wedding planning. After it all, I was just so glad it turned out well and that everyone had a good time. Ray: Well at this point I let Sash take full control, I would be there for the crucial decision making, (and) by crucial I mean what color, which type of food. I didn’t want to interfere. She has such great taste, God forbid I unleashed this bull into that china store!

Ray and Sasha were civilly wed in mid-2011, and had their dream wedding over the summer in Manila at the historic Basilica Minor de San Sebastian. A lavish reception followed thereafter at the National Museum. Sasha's father's wedding gift was a honeymoon to Amanpulo, Palawan. They loved it so much that they ended up coming back to the same island getaway with family for a "familymoon"!

Kudos to Jenny Pascual '92 who was recently named as an Ambassador for The World Humanitarian Council.

The World Humanitarian Council is comprised of global leaders and changemakers whose talent lies in addressing the most pressing social issues. Based in London, the Council was established by the consultancy firm Wardour and Oxford. This is what Wardour and Oxford had to say about our fellow alumna: Jenny is a senior advertising and brand executive with a diverse background in brand management and creative services handling brands from such industries as financial services, IT, and FMCG.

When asked, "What matters most in the world to you?" Jenny replies, "What we put on our plates has a story. I've always been passionate about food and encouraged to think about what I eat, to make healthier choices, and to learn as much as I can about my food and where it comes from. I'm on a road to food discovery...Along the way, I hope to honor the local farmers and food artisans who cultivate this food by the way of stories and anecdotes." Keep your eyes peeled. Our very own Jenny Pascual is "cooking" something up, and you will be the first to get a taste!

Ron Richard Habla ’09 is a young alumnus with a very bright

future ahead, recently becoming the President of AIESEC in Ateneo de Manila University. What is AIESEC, you ask? AIESEC just happens to be the largest youth-run organization in the world! We recently sat down with Ron and asked him about all things AIESEC.

What is AIESEC? AIESEC is the world's largest youth-run organization. It is committed in providing a platform for youth leadership development through leadership opportunities, international internships and a participation in a global learning environment.

Can you tell us more about the social development component of AIESEC? In AIESEC, we aim at developing leaders who value creating a positive impact on society. AIESEC is currently tackling four components outlined in the UN Millennium Development Goals. We are running four Projects Based on Exchanges (PBoXes), namely Code Red for HIV/AIDS Awareness, POWER for environmental sustainability, REAP for eradicating hunger, and LEGACY for universal education. We bring in foreign trainees, ranging from Russia, Australia, Vietnam, to Singapore and Pakistan.

For Manila-based alumni interested in international trainees: “They can choose to become Global Internship Programme trainee nominees. AIESEC can provide businesses with professional, globally competitive HR support as well. Depending on the company's need, the Global Internship Programme can last 6-78 weeks. This means the trainees may spend their internship in their companies in that span of time.”

How can our alumni get involved?

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT:

Ron Richard Habla ‘09

For overseas alumni interested in international trainees: “We can help you connect with AIESEC entities in your country. Should you need Filipino trainees to send overseas for internships, we can also recruit them here for you to send there. Just last year, we were able to send around 20 Filipino trainees abroad. Some went to DHL, Alcatel-Lucent and Husqvarna (AIESEC's Global Exchange Partners) in Germany, Singapore to the United States.”

For alumni with social advocacies: “They can choose to become learning partners by providing learning modules and training for the foreign trainees/volunteers to execute. They can also become community partners by providing communities wherein trainees can deliver sessions, activities and trainings. They could also act as financial sponsors to our projects as a way of sustaining our year-long operations. Lastly, they can choose to become Global Community Development Programme trainee nominees.”

BOOKS FOR A CAUSE Last September 7, 2012, the third Vicky Herrera Learning Center was inaugurated at Segundo Maitim School in Tagaytay. As always, book donations from alumni like Ray Wagner '74 and Beth Rhodes Wenck '79 poured in! A very special thanks goes to Miguel Ramos '87 and cousin Trina Alindogan (ISM patron)! Through their effort and generosity, the National Bookstore Foundation was able to donate over 500 brand new books as well as mats, shelves, and furniture to the library.

Jos Ortega '78, a stalwart supporter of the project, organized the special event while Aarsi Sagar '02 presented the value of energy efficient lightbulbs to students and parents. Nell-Armin De Pano-Raralio '77 led the group in solemn prayer while Vivien Mangalindan '69 brought the house down with a raucous reading session with the children. Jenny Pascual '92, Chand Daryanani '06, and JC Echiverri '06 also came out to support the event.

Flanked by Maitim Segundo elementary students and teachers, alumni came out to support the opening of the third Vicky Herrera Learning Center in Tagaytay. Alumni in photo are Aarsi Sagar ’02, Jos Ortega ’78, Vicky, Jenny Pascual ’92, Chand Daryanani ’06, Vivien Mangalindan ’69, and Miguel Ramos ’87.

The Vicky Herrera Learning Center is the gift the keeps on giving! Without the wonderful efforts of the international alumni community, this would not have been possible. Onwards to the fourth one!

Maraming salamat to Vicky Herrera ’68, Jos Ortega ’78, and Jenny Pascual ’92 for the pictures!

A Note from a Cornell and McGill Alumna

I got accepted to Cornell University for my undergrad, and I pursued my Masters in Public Administration at the Cornell Institute of Public Affairs. I briefly worked at the Harvard Kennedy School as a Researcher.

I am currently pursuing my PhD in Management at McGill University. I wanted to reconnect with ISM and update you on my profile. If any new student is interested in pursuing an academic career or would like to study at McGill or Cornell, they can feel free to contact me.

Mrs. Tantoco and Mrs. Littaua, reconnected!

Katherine Littaua Kutch '84 spotted Mrs. Tantoco in the July issue of the alumni newsletter and shortly thereafter sent this email to the Alumni Office:

I studied in I.S. from 1978 and graduated as part of the Class of 1984. My mother, Michelle Littaua, taught French in Middle School from 1978 to 1988. We saw in the July Newsletter below the names of Mrs. Lilia Tantoco, Mrs. Idoy Limcaoco and Senora Pia Escalente. My mother worked in close cooperation with them and would love to catch up with them on the occasion of her next visit to the Philippines this coming December.

A few days later, they were reconnected!
