Directors.

[email protected] by 10/1/12 to be

included in the October newsletter so we can have an

open discussion of the membership about these

important decisions facing UMECRA.

We will have space in October newsletters to

comment on the following questions.

What are the advantages and disadvantage of

changing UMECRA from a ride manager

organization (where only ride managers, rider reps,

and vet reps have voting rights) to a one member/one

vote organization?

How can UMECRA and the regional organizations

(GLDRA, MNDRA, DRAW) better work together to

support each other and improve distance riding in the

Midwest?

We will also be discussing these questions on

FaceBook, so join the conversation there as well.

Based on all of the information we have gathered

from the survey and other member input, the next

step will be for the BRC to make a recommendation

to the UMECRA Board of Directors at the November

Board meeting. The Board will then decide what (if

anything) to present to the membership for a vote at

the annual meeting. Thanks for your attention and contribution to the conversation. The BRC

Novice Division

A New International Shagya-Arabian

Registry in the USA and Canada.

The Performance Shagya-Arabian Registry (PShR) of

the United States and Canada is proud to announce

its acceptance into the Internationale Shagya-Araber

Gesellschaft (ISG) as of July 2012. The ISG is the

umbrella organization for accepted Shagya-Arabian

registries around the world, including the historical

State Studs such as Babolna, Hungary; Radautz,

Romania; and Topolcianky, Slovakia. To be

recognized by the ISG, a registry must submit an

accurate pedigree for all registered horses along with

documented breeding guidelines and practices in

compliance with the ISG standards. The Shagya-

Arabian breed was first recognized in 1986 by the

World Arabian Horse Organization thanks to the

efforts of the founding members of the ISG. Since

that time, the goal of the ISG has been to preserve

bloodlines and ensure the original breeding goals

used to develop this magnificent breed as a military

horse in the late 1700’s are being uniformly practiced.

conformation, rideability scored by test riders, free

jumping and performance testing of both the physical

and mental aspects of the horse.

What will this acceptance into the ISG bring to the

USA and Canada? To align with the worldwide

standards, the PShR will be implementing and

aligning with the ISG, some of the most obvious

changes will include:

Registered horses in the PShR will be placed into a

Studbook format

The terminology of Part-Shagya, Shagya Sportlo and

any other labels are not recognized by the ISG

PShR inspections will include veterinary

examination on site for stallions

From July 2012 forward, all PShR Shagya-Arabian

stallions, not already placed in Book I or II, must be

performance tested for them to be approved as

breeding stallions

PShR Shagya-Arabian stallions are not to be used for

breeding until they have passed their performance

testing criteria

The PShR also includes Books III & IV for horses

with at least 25% Shagya-Arabian bloodlines

The PShR is developing a 5-year action plan to

determine the number of horses and sites for

inspections among other tasks. To identify the needs

of the Shagya-Arabian community, input from

Shagya-Arabian owners, breeders and admirers

throughout the USA and Canada, the PShR Board of

Directors is developing an online survey. To

Attention College Bound and College Enrolled Students Applications are now being accepted through

November 12, 2012 for scholarships for post

high school educational opportunities. Applicants

must have at least two years’ membership in the

Upper Midwest Endurance and Competitive Trail

Association. The applicants must have

participated in at least 25 rides sponsored by

UMECRA and intend to study for at least a two

year program.

Former Wisconsin members Ray and Audrey

Gehrig established this scholarship in 1996.

Additional tax deductable contributions are

welcome for anyone at any time. Many

UMECRA members have made charitable

contributions to support this scholarship fund in

the past. We encourage members to continue to

add memorial gifts and honorariums to the fund

to support this worthy scholarship for youth and

others returning to school. You can donate

Good-bye to Benny! Ibn Ben Bask (aka Benny) was the product of a good plan

gone bad. His mother was a Pure Polish mare imported by

Jeanne Atherton of Walnut, Illinois. His father was Tom

Chauncy’s Ben Bask of Scottsdale, Arizona. The result of

this expensive breeding was a runty, mismarked throwback

who was named to humiliate his sire and grandsire, then

given to me by default. That plan backfired, as he became

a Champion endurance horse. The first time I looked at

him, I was reminded of the words from one of my favorite

country songs, “He was a sandy haired rebel boy with

those same ol’ hungry eyes. He looked up at me and said,

‘I’m gonna be somebody someday, you can bet your hard

earned dollar I will.’”

Benny lived to run. He reached his first UMECRA 1,000

miles in 1991 and in the year 2000 he completed his

5,000th. H won multiple Regional AHA, UMECRA and

AERC Championships. In 1994, he was honored by being

voted UMECRA’s Rider’s Choice.

If one’s greatness is determined by the greatness of their

adversaries, then Benny was more than a Champion.

Carrying my young niece, Brandi, Benny gave Bill

Wilson’s great BoDiddly a run for 1st Across the Line.

Several year’s later, he raced Canadian Jim Rawski and his

world-class gelding, Sultan Lad, for the AHA Region X

Championships. Benny won that race, but continued

another mile into camp, unstoppable. I once made the

mistake of dismounting to run down a hill only miles from

the finish at another Regional Championship ride. With

three riders bearing down on us, I barely had time to get a

toe in the stirrup and, belly over saddle most of the way,

we outran the field.

In 1994, we were competing against Debbie Olson on her

terrific horse, Spruce Sarta. At the time, Spruce Sarta

boasted 22 straight first place finishes and had completed

six 100’s that year. Debbie and I met at Point Chaser with

only a matter of a point or two separating us from the

UMECRA Championship. Just like the present, Point

Chaser offered a 50 on Friday and one on Saturday, as well

as a 2-Day 100. Debbie and I agreed to make it a true head

to head competition. We raced on Friday and it came

down to a ¼ mile sprint to the finish. My crew, Kim

Bruno and Rick Nelson, arrived at the finish line to find a

group gathered with LAWN CHAIRS! only 20 feet from

the finish line. “We hear there is going to be a real race,”

some innocent bystander said. In horror, Kim started

clearing away the chairs and screaming at people to move.

She had crewed for Benny before and knew he respected

no barriers. Only minutes later, we flew across the line

with Benny a nose ahead of Spruce Sarta. The next

morning, Debbie and I and our horses stood in the below

freezing pre-dawn, waiting to vet in for the next 50. Benny

passed just fine; Spruce Sarta’s back was so sore he could

not start. Debbie hugged me and said, “The King is dead;

long live the King.” Then she wished me luck. Benny

won that 50 in 4 hours and 14 minutes, only 4 minutes

slower than the day before.

Today, August 13th, 29-year-old Ibn Ben Bask and I

awaited my friend and co-worker of 32 years, Dr. Rick

Holmbeck. With the strains of Travis Tritt’s “I’m Gonna

Be Somebody” playing in the background. Dr. Rick

provided the magic potion that would make Benny sleek

and fit and fast and young once more. Tears were shed

even though I know Benny and I will meet again. He’ll

give me just enough time to get a toe in the stirrup. But I

will be young and fit again by that time, and that is all I

will need. We will cross the Rainbow Bridge together, not

idly but at a furious speed. And I’m just warning all you

innocent bystanders. You better not put any lawn chairs in

our way.

Iron Creek Update: Jutta and I rode and finalized the trails this weekend and boots or some kind of protection is recommended on some parts of the trail. Due to the excessive heat and dry conditions, the trail has changed. There is room to ride off the North Country Trail in most places. In some areas it is hard to avoid. Please pass this on.

Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're

worthless, but because they're priceless. ~Sherry

Anderson (Thanks, Kathy)

As we are about 2/3rds to 3/4 way through our

ride season, I’d like to give a shout those people

in our organization who have stepped up and

helped at rides. Yes we need ride managers,

vets, riders and equines; but no ride can be put on

without a few more people volunteering a few

hours or a few days to our sport. To those of you

who have helped time, P&R, vet scribe, make

meals, mark and unmark trail, fill water tanks,

score comp sheets and make time calculations,

clean campgrounds, lead novice groups or do

another job at a ride manager’s request –

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Your time is truly

appreciated. If you have yet to volunteer, I urge

you to call a ride manager right now, and make

yourself available for a morning, afternoon or

entire day or weekend. Some jobs require a tiny

bit of training, (for example for learning to P&R,

get a stethoscope and start on your horses at

home or the place you board – take readings

several times over a week or more to learn what

that horse’s normal is) but many jobs just need

your time. Thanks in advance for stepping up to

help.

Thistle Down Wrap-up!

Pre-potluck music was provided by

Christi Kuhlka from Glen Ullin, ND on the violin

and she was later joined by Lynda Zimmerman

who sang one of her favorite songs, “Horses are

Heroes”. Kenny Fett did a great job with fresh

grilled burgers for potluck.

As usual MNDRA riders stepped up to

help with special thanks to Dale/Lisa Lunde,

Carmen Steuck, Lynn Reichert, and Joan Elbert.

Scoring went quickly thanks to Dennis Fett who

used a laptop with a modified program for fast,

accurate results.

Our landowners seemed very pleased and

your personal thanks to them pulls a lot more

weight than anything Teresa or I can say. We

need these people who so willingly let us cut

trails through their property and turn it over to us

for a weekend. We had 10 gas cards donated for

prizes by the former property owner’s daughter

and many of you have already sent her a thank

you. If you have forgotten, please do so as it

means a lot to those people and helps for future

events.

We put in a lot of time and effort trying

to make this a FUN event. Your kind words and

sincere thanks are well appreciated. Thank YOU

for coming and enjoying our trails.
