In the reading from Acts, we hear one of the early sermons that Paul preached in the Synagogue in Antioch. In this context, he begins by relating God’s mighty deeds throughout Israel’s history leading up to David, and the promise to David that one of his descendants would be a future king. This promise Paul applies to Jesus. Paul then speaks of John the Baptist as the herald who testified about Jesus before his own death. Here we see Luke’s interest in the continuity of God’s plan for salvation across different historical epochs. First is the time of Israel, the Law and the Prophets which comes to an end with John the Baptist; this is followed by the time of the historical Jesus; then the time of the Church after Pentecost. In Luke’s Gospel, this is succinctly stated: ‘The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the Kingdom of God is proclaimed.’ (Luke 16:16) Paul begins his sermon by addressing his audience: ‘You Israelites, and others who fear God, listen.’ (Acts 13:16) From this address, it is clear that in the synagogues were Jews and also Gentiles who were interested and even attracted to Judaism. Many of these ‘god-fearers’ were among Paul’s first converts. These Gentiles had been nurtured by the faith traditions of Israel and this prepared them to hear and receive the Gospel. Jesus also did not come to us in a vacuum. Jesus was born within the rich faith traditions of Israel. The birth of John the Baptist, which we celebrate today, reminds Christians of our Jewish origins. Elizabeth and Zechariah belong to priestly families, and are faithful Law-observant Jews. This is the pathway through which God has chosen to come to us. Just as we have typical patterns in the birth notices in our daily papers, so within the Scriptures of Israel there is a regular pattern used to describe the birth of a special person in God’s plan of Salvation. The angelic messenger, the greeting, the announcement of a birth in an impossible situation, the name given to the child all point to the special role this child is to play in later life. John is to be a child of Israel like the great prophet Elijah. Even as we celebrate John, Christian faith says that John’s birth is just the overture to an even greater drama that is soon to unfold. This first announcement, of John’s birth, leads immediately to a second announcement of an even greater birth to a young girl in Nazareth. This will be the pattern of John’s life. He prepares the way. In Luke’s Gospel, John fades from the narrative when Jesus’ ministry begins. John’s death at the hands of Herod points ahead to a second death at the hands of Pilate. As we celebrate John today, let us give thanks for the faithful lives of our Jewish brothers and sisters and let us remember in sorrow the centuries of misunderstanding and persecution they have experienced. ‘His name is John’

Both readings today celebrate our Christian origins in the traditions of Israel. In the reading from Acts, we hear one of the early sermons that Paul preached in the Synagogue in Antioch. In this context, he begins by relating God’s mighty deeds throughout Israel’s history leading up to David, and the promise to David that one of his descendants would be a

future king.

In Luke’s Gospel, this is succinctly stated: ‘The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the Kingdom of God is proclaimed.’ (Luke 16:16)

Paul begins his sermon by addressing his audience: ‘You Israelites, and others who fear God, listen.’ (Acts 13:16) From this address, it is clear that in the synagogues were Jews and also Gentiles who were interested and even attracted to Judaism.

Appeal 2018

PLEASE spare a thought for those freezing outdoors in this weather at the moment and give generously.

Envelopes are available in all three churches. The envelopes may be placed on any of the collection plates throughout June.

A BIG, BIG

THANK YOU

The response to our appeal for the Romero Centre was just fantastic. Thank you very much for your generosity that saw three large loads of much needed items delivered to the Centre for distribution to those asylum seekers who need it most, as well as a generous sum of money in the form of gift cards.

The Romero Centre at Dutton Park provides support to asylum seekers who desperately need it, not only through the provision of food and other basic necessities but also through assistance with understanding our culture and language.

Our contribution to this all-important ministry has been very gratefully received. Thank you!

Council 2020

“What do you think God is asking of us in Australia at this time?” Listen to what the Spirit is saying. Pope Francis has approved the Australian Bishops’ decision to hold a Plenary Council in Australia in 2020 and 2021. It is a significant moment for the Church in Australia to make decisions about the future.

We pray for the Church in Australia as we prepare for the Plenary Council in 2020. May we listen to what the Spirit is saying as we share with one another our stories of faith. We pray for courage to speak boldly and for compassion to listen with open and humble hearts.

The Plenary Council gives us all an opportunity to listen to what the Spirit is saying to the Church in Australia. In the midst of dialogue, we can hear God’s voice. Every one of us is invited to listen to God by listening to one another. Find out more about the Plenary Council 2020 at the new website, now online:

Multicultural Celebration

Over 40% of us were born overseas-let’s

celebrate that!!

Sunday 19 August

11.00 am-1.00 pm

St Catherine’s Hall & Rotunda

We are making good progress in planning this multicultural event on the 19th August at St. Catherine's. We already have coordinators for a few communities who have agreed to organize food stalls. We do need more coordinators from other communities and helpers for the identified ones, so please talk and solicit help from those you know in the parish as more variety would enrich the event and bring us together as a celebrating community of rich diversity. Please see the list below and contact Sam (041 639 7455) or Elijah (043 035 9316).

NATIVITY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST/B - 23/24 June 2018 ♫ PROCESSIONAL: GOD CALLED GREAT PROPHETS

1. God called great prophets to foretell the coming of his Son;

he showed the world the Lamb of God, and hailed him in our name.

3. That lonely voice cried out the truth, derided and denied;

as witness to the law of God this mighty martyr died.

4. We praise you, Trinity in One, the light of unknown ways,

the hope of all who search for you, whose love fills all our days. Text: Stanbrook Abbey © 1974. Tune: St Anne 86.86, Later form of melody from A supplement

♫ SONG OF PRAISE: O GOD YOU SEARCH ME

1. O God you search me and you know me.

All my thoughts lie open to your gaze.

When I walk or lie down you are before me:

Ever the maker and keeper of my days.

2. You know my resting and my rising.

You discern my purpose from afar,

and with love everlasting you besiege me;

In ev’ry moment of life or death, you are.

3. Before a word is on my tongue, Lord, you have

known its meaning through and through.

You are with me beyond my understanding:

God of my present, my past and future too.

5. For you created me and shaped me, gave me life

within my mother’s womb. For the wonders of

who I am I praise you: Safe in your hands, all

creation is made. Text & Music: Farrell, Bernadette © 1993 OCP Publications

♫ RECESS: WE WALK BY FAITH

1. We walk by faith, and not by sight: No

gracious words we hear of him who spoke as

none e’er spoke, But we believe him near.

2. We may not touch his hands and side, Nor

follow where he trod; yet in his promise we

rejoice, And cry “My Lord and God!”

3. Help then, O Lord, our unbelief, and may our

faith abound; To call on you when you are

near, and seek where you are found:

4. That when our life of faith is done in realms of

clearer light, we may behold you as you are in

full and endless sight. (Repeat Vs. 1) T & M: Haugen, Marty © 1986 GIA Pub. ONE LICENSE #A-641326
