Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.

The Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Catholic Parish acknowledges the Jaggera and Turribul people, the Traditional Custodians who have walked upon and cared for this land for thousands of years.

We acknowledge the continued deep spiritual attachment and relationship of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to this Country and commit ourselves to the ongoing journey of Reconciliation.

A major theme in today’s Scriptures is “the call to, and cost of, discipleship”.

The passage from the Book of Jonah gives a perspective on the mercy of God. It shows that God will forgive anyone who takes the call to conversion seriously. The Ninevites change their behaviour and ways of living and God, to the dismay of Jonah, does not destroy them.

In Paul’s letter to the Corinthians it is important to read this short passage as part of its larger context. 1 Corinthians 7 begins, ‘Now concerning the matters about which you wrote’. Paul then goes on to offer advice in response to questions the Corinthians raised about a range of sexual issues. Paul’s primary concern is that the end of this world will be very soon and he wishes that the Corinthians do not take on new obligations that could distract them from the imminent return of Jesus. In verse 25 Paul acknowledges that he has no clear command but simply offers his advice ‘in view of the impending crisis’. ‘Those who have wives should live as though they had none.’ This is not a command for celibacy within marriage. Verses 2 and 3 of this same chapter speak of the man and woman giving each other their conjugal rights. Rather, what Paul is advising is that the Corinthian have the ‘change of heart’ that Jesus calls for and live lives focused on the coming reign of God. Everything else is secondary.

Today we hear the call of the first disciples from Mark’s Gospel, which is quite different to how we heard it last Sunday in John’s Gospel – a further reminder that the Gospels are theological reflections on the meaning of Jesus’ life, rather than biographies or histories.

Mark’s Gospel emphasises discipleship. He writes for his own community struggling to be faithful in a time of persecution and fear. In this scene we see what discipleship costs, namely to be prepared to leave your livelihood and your family. This was a reality within the early church when becoming a follower of Jesus meant leaving the religious traditions and social network of your family’s Jewish faith. Once this step was made the past was closed to you. Discipleship costs for the followers of Jesus, as it does for disciples of all time. Our struggles are different but true discipleship still costs. APOSTLE’S CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried;

he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

Amen.

EUCHARISTIC ACCLAMATION

When we eat this bread and drink this cup We proclaim you death, O Lord, until you come again!

Text: Excerpts from the English Translation of The Roman Missal © 2010 ICEL. Music: Mason, Paul © 2004 Willow Pub

COMMUNION: OUR BLESSING CUP

Refrain: Our blessing cup is a communion with the blood of Christ; And the bread we break, it is a sharing in the body of the Lord. 1. How can we make a return for all the goodness God has shown? We will take the cup of life and call upon God’s name. Refrain

2. Precious indeed in your sight the life and death of those you love. We are your servants, for you have set us free. Refrain

3. Gracious and merciful God, we give you thanks and bless your name: With all your people, praise and glory to your name. Refrain

4. For you have heard my voice, for you have heard my pleading. Though death surrounded me, you heard and answered me. Refrain

SONG OF PRAISE: GOD OF MERCY

Eternal is your love. Faithful is your Word. Holy is your name, God of mercy. Repeat x 3 Text & Music: © Monica O’Brien and Gina Ogilvie

RECESSIONAL: GALILEE SONG

1. Deep within my heart, I feel voices whispering to me. Word that I can’t understand; meaning I can’t clearly hear! Calling me to follow close, lest I leave myself behind. Calling me to walk into evening shadows one more time.

Refrain: So I leave my boats behind! Leave them on familiar shores! Set my heart upon the deep! Follow you again my Lord! 2. In my memories I know how you send familiar rains falling gently on day; dancing patterns on my pain! And I need to learn once more, in the fortress of my mind, to believe in falling rain as I travel deserts dry! Refrain

3. As I gaze into the night, down the future of my years, I’m not sure I want to walk past horizons that I know! But I feel my spirit called like a stirring deep within, restless ‘til I live again beyond the fears that close me in! Refrain

Parish Sacramental Journey: CICCA

[Christian Initiation of Children of Catechetical Age]

Dear parents and carers, Registrations are open for children over 7 years who wish to receive the Sacraments in 2021. There are four steps:

Step 1: REGISTER - Contact the Parish Sacramental Registrar (Michelle) now on 3849 7158 and register your child who will receive a Mass card.

Step 2: PARTICIPATION IN LITURGY - Book your family in to regular weekend parish Masses to enable your child to participate in the liturgy as much as he/she is ready and begins to feel at home and confident in the church.

Step 3: INVITATION - As Fr Pat gets to know you and your child he will write and invite you to take the next step.

Step 4: ENROL/PREPARE/CELEBRATE - Children are enrolled in the Sacramental Program and will attend family centred activity sessions to prepare for the celebration of Confirmation and First Communion.

From registration to reception of the Sacraments, practices are based on a child’s readiness. It is tailored individually for families and children. If children are not yet Baptised, please contact the parish office to speak to us. Both Fr Pat and I are happy to talk to you about the process and assist you in any way.

Pauline Thomas, Pastoral Associate
