Children were not allowed in the ICU, but Michael’s mother eventually insisted that he be able to see his sister. When he got to the humidicrib he sang: ‘You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey’. The nurse reported that as Michael sang, the baby’s pulse rate began to calm down and become steady. ‘Keep on singing, Michael’, encouraged his mother with tears in her eyes. ‘You never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away.’ The baby recovered and left the hospital three weeks later. I am not pretending for a moment that Michael’s song healed his sister, but we should never underestimate the power of human support and love. It helps us to be healed. The Gospel story of the healing of the deaf person who could not speak is striking because it is one of the few stories where the crowd makes the request of healing from Jesus. This is understandable given that the man cannot speak for himself, but the scene, as Mark writes it, is very touching. Mark tells us that the crowd brought the man to Jesus. ‘They’ beg Jesus to heal him, ‘they’ are ordered not to tell anyone about the miracle, but ‘they’ go straight out and tell everyone about it. It’s our Eucharist, our prayer and our Church. Within the Mass there are opportunities for private prayer, but Eucharist is, essentially, an action of the assembled community. In our own way we bring those who are deaf and cannot speak to Jesus each time we gather. This is what the Prayers of the Faithful are all about and why they are so important. When we visit another parish we can tell a lot about it by the care with which the intercessions are composed and compiled. The Church has always believed in the power of intercessory prayer. Not that God needs to be reminded what our world needs. God knows that better than we know it. But intercessory prayer sorts our priorities and establishes who has a claim on our affections and concerns. It also enables others to know that we stand in solidarity with them. And miracles still happen when we are one with those for whom we hope and pray. Sometimes the first miracle that occurs is that we notice the needs of some group beyond our immediate circle. Their suffering moves us and we choose to help them. Let’s pray in this Eucharist that Christ removes our blindness, opens our ears and loosens our tongues so that we speak up for those who are most in need of a healing word that brings them justice and peace. Social Justice

Statement 2018–19

A Place to Call Home:

Making a home for

everyone in our land

We celebrate Social Justice S u n d a y o n 30 September. This year, the A u s t r a l i a n Bishops’ Social Justice Statement is titled: ‘A Place to Call Home: Making a home for everyone in our land’. The Statement challenges us all to confront Australia’s growing ra te o f home lessness and unaffordable housing.

The Scriptural basis of this year’s Statement is Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30–35), about the outsider who stops to help a man in desperate need, takes him to safety and pays for his care. The Statement examines the extent of Australia’s homelessness and housing crisis. It emphasises that secure housing is a human right and an uncontestable public good, affirmed by both Catholic teaching and the Declaration of Human Rights. In concluding, it issues a challenge to government, to Church and community and to us as individuals to bring about change and reform. The Statement will be launched during September. Copies of it will be available in each of the churches. The Statement will be available for download from the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council,

(www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au) from the week of the launch.

2. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down, the Lord who loves the just, the Lord, who protects the stranger. R/

3. The Lord upholds the widow and orphan, but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion’s God, from age to age. R/

♫ RECESS: BLESSING HYMN FOR AUSTRALIA. 1. Ancient land of wide and sunburnt plains, where feet have long

since trod, You have known the stories of our search to find the face of God. God, you hovered over darkness when the void was silent still; then your voice rang out in splendour; creation knew your will, and your eyes of love beheld in light this land of sweeping plains. Now our voices too rejoice again creation’s song of praise.

2. Holy Spirit, gift of love divine, with you we dare to dream, so to walk in justice all our days this land of gold and green from all nations we have gathered; lead us on in unity. In this vast and rugged homeland, may you our centre be. May our lives show forth your tender love, compassion, strong and bold. Help us bring Good News to all the world; your gracious love unfold.

3. Holy spirit, breathe your life in us, your truth to guide our way. Now with open hearts we hear your call to follow you each day. Bring us all as one together, under southern stars above, so the cross will lead us onward, Great Southland of your love. Give us joyful hearts in days to come, all fear and dark cast out. Help us build in Christ a world reborn in justice and in love.
