Every year thousands of SouthAfricans are diagnosed with a life­threatening blood disorder likeleukaemia. A staggering 75% ofpatients needing a stem­celltransplant are younger than 25.

“If you become ill with a bloodcancer that requires a bone mar­row stem­cell transplant, here isanother uncomfortable fact —your race matters.

“For a successful transplant,the donor and recipient musthave nearly identical genes di­rectly relating to their DNA andethnic background,” says LaurenCorlett, national PR and market­ing specialist for the SunflowerFund.

“The chance of finding a suita­ble donor is 1:100 000 within yourown ethnic group. With only67 000 people registered inSouth Africa, this is a far cry froman effective database which ide­ally should be in excess of400 000. The South AfricanBone Marrow Registry (SABMR)also does not represent the popu­lation demographics of South Af­rica, therefore it is also critical toincrease the number of black, In­

dian, coloured and Asians ontothe SABMR,” Corlett adds.

The Sunflower Fund is a non­profit organisation committed toincreasing the SABMR.

overthefestiveseason.Ithadbeenex-pected that councillors and thepublicwould be brought up to date on thesituation at Exco’s meeting on Tues-day 21 October, but the expected re-port was not mentioned.

What added to the warning lightsis that an application was receivedfrom the organisers of the AfricaMarine Expo on 1 and 2 Novemberstating their concern at “the percep-tion that thepublicandmediawill de-rivefromtwounoccupiedrestaurantscurrently on site”.

This went on to request that thespaces be temporarily “turned into apop-up art gallery, media lounge andhospitality area”.

The meeting approved this re-questwithout reference to the longer-termproblembutitsuggeststhattimeis no longer of the essence in gettingthe restaurants let and up and run-ning less than a month later.

Accordingtoreportscarriedintwolocal newspapers, Umdoni MayorSiyabongs Khwela and SpeakerSykes Naidoo have previously as-sured that the restaurants could beexpected to be operational inDecem-ber.

The general council meeting isscheduled in about aweek’s timeandthe expected answer to whether thepavilionwillbebacktopreviouslevelsof service will probably unfold.

unruly and often illegal behaviourwhich has caused concern at Scott-burgh main beach is spreading toother beaches in the area, notablyPark Rynie.

On the other hand, a senior SAPSofficer told the Fever that officers re-sponding tosomecomplaintsatmainbeach were reporting that the com-plaints were exaggerated or evenspurious.

A councillor suggested that thedifferent approaches could well re-flectdifferentcultures indeterminingbehaviour patterns.

DAcaucusleaderEdwinBaptieex-pressed concern that Umdoni couldbe acquiring a reputation as the“party capital of the South Coast”.

“A significant proportion of therevellersandtroublemakersarefromDurban and Pietermaritzburgwherethatkindofbehaviourisnottolerated.

“Atourperildoweallowthe think-ingthatit isokaytodoithere,”hesaid.

A FORMER managing directorof the Fever newspapergroup, Greg Orsmond, faced

453 charges of fraud when he ap-peared in the Durban Special Com-mercial Crimes Court last Thursday.

Orsmondwasmanaging directorof The Witness Group and FeverNewspaperGroupuntil hewas axedin April 2013 after the discovery of“gross negligence” on his part.

An audit and forensic investiga-tion revealed that Orsmond hadallegedly syphoned off nearlyR11 million from the mainstreamand community media houses.

The audit resulted in the fraudcharges he faced in court.

Orsmond stepped briefly into thedock yesterday looking dishevelledand crestfallen and was released onR10 000 bail ahead of his next ap-pearance in November.

His attorney Satch Morgan saidOrsmond, a father of three, had co-operated with the investigatingofficer and would appear in courtwhen required.

In a detailed charge sheet beforethecourt,Orsmondisallegedtohavemade unauthorised paymentsamounting to nearly R11 million forhis personal gain.

The charge sheet indicated 267

charges related to payments madefor the distribution of newspapers,but investigators claim the servicewas never rendered. Those chargesaccount for nearly R10,5 million.

“Investigation revealed Sky BlueMedia [aFeverNewspaperssubsidi-ary]madepaymentsintotheaccountofTrifidDesignwherein theaccusedwas thesoleproprietor.Theaccusedauthorised and requested paymentfor services that were never ren-dered”, the charge sheet reads.

Theremaining186fraudchargesarise from alleged ghost paymentsfor distribution the state contendsactuallywent to private building up-grades to his home and which were

worth nearly R670 000.“Investigations revealed this was

for private and personal work doneon the accused’s farm in ShellyBeach.”

Inahandwrittenaffidavitpennedby Orsmond, he indicated he hadmade an effort to fully co-operatewith the investigation team andwouldcontinue todoso.Healso saidhe was employed and his incomesupported his family.

“I am married and have threechildren and I am employed and Isupport my family. If I am grantedbail, I undertake to attend courtwhenever I am requested to do so,”he wrote.

Media24, which now owns Feverpublications obtained a high courtjudgment against Orsmond late in2013forR10 119 178,23(plusinter-est dating from July 6, 2013).

The judgmentwasobtained inre-spect of damages sufferedasa resultof alleged “reckless or grossly negli-gent and/or fraudulent conduct” onthe part of Orsmond.

Orsmondhadsince failedtosatis-fy the judgment or indicate to thesheriff disposable property thatwassufficient to satisfy it.

Hewas found to be insolvent, be-cause his liabilities exceeded hisknown assets, and placed under se-questration in April.

Media24 chief financial officerManie Mayman said Orsmond’s al-leged offences were serious.

“These are serious offences and,in termsof the law,wehad topursuecriminalcharges in linewiththePre-vention of Corrupt Activities Act.This is our policy,” he said.

“This had a substantial effect onthe company, not just on the Fever,butalsoSkyBlueMediaand it result-ed in people being retrenched.

“Because of the financial per-formance of the companies, largelyasaresultofthefraud,wehadtotakesteps and as a consequence peoplewere retrenched,” Mayman added.

On the positive side it should be award­ed this month’s prize for doing somethingpositive (and long overdue).

Teams have been working on the Scott­burgh to Sezela section of the R102 for thepast month or so and I spotted the sameteams on the Scottburgh, Umkomaassection of the R102 last week picking uplitter along the verges.

It is a pleasure to see clean verges atlast, now let’s hope the litter bugs don’tspoil it for everyone again.

Welfare hosts HIV training

KINGSBURGH Child and Welfare Societyhosted HIV prevention, treatment, careand support training for community

volunteers last week. Training was presentedby the International Federation of Red Crossand Red Crescent Societies and is a Lotto­funded initiative.

Attendees, preschool and crèche teachers,shared information on how HIV affects pre­schoolers from three months to six years old.

The meeting discussed ways in which toprovide care and support to preschool childrenwho are HIV carriers, the administration ofmedication and monitoring infections.

The most significant challenge teachersface is that many children may be HIV carriers,but parents are either not aware of it or did notdisclose the information to the preschool.

The meeting looked at ways to reach outto parents to get information to assist thechildren.

Non­disclosure by parents indicates thatalthough there has been improvement in HIVeducation, it is still a sensitive subject as thereis fear of discrimination and stigmatism.

“The happier the child is and the more sup­port they get, the longer their lifespan. Pre­schools should also work with governingbodies.

“Ifyoubringittotheparent’sattentionthatthe child is sick all the time and nothing isdone, it is your responsibility to tell theauthorities. The child has a right to have itsneeds met,” says Babs Subramanian, provin­cial training co­ordinator of the Red Cross.

She said children who are HIV carriers aresometimes neglected at home as a result. Shestressed that many people still do not knowthe difference between HIV and Aids.

“No one dies because of Aids, they die be­cause of a secondary disease contracted bythem as a result of their low immunity.

“By law death certificates never state thata person died of Aids, because people die asa result of the secondary infection, such asmeningitis, etc.” she added.

palities isR312 billionand in thepastyear 93% of that was collected saidMinister PravinGordhan,Minister ofLocal Government and TraditionalAffairs addressing businessmen andwomen at the Afrikaanse Handels-instituut (AHI) annual conference.

He said municipalities spentR62 billionlastyear,whichattributedto 70% or 80% of what they had tospend. Referring to the National De-velopment Plan, he said that withoutan effective state no big economy canfunction.

“It was governments that savedthe banks in the United States andEurope. It is governments that are

spending to create growth.”Gordhan saidwhile the statemust

invest more in infrastructure andfocus more onmunicipalities and in-frastructurewhichwill support smallbusinesses, small and medium busi-ness need to partnerwith the state toestablishwhat is required in terms ofeconomic and social development.

Referring to a meeting on 18 Sep-tember with 240 municipal mayorsand lastweek’smeetingwithmunici-pal financial managers, he said theyare looking at the realities aroundmunicipalities,politicalstability,gov-ernance issues, procedures, servicedelivery and financial management.

He said on the positive side themunicipalities we have are only 14yearsold.Onethousandtwohundredlocalgovernmentstructureschangedto 278 municipalities.

“Athirdof278isdoingwell,anoth-er third is doing reasonably well,while the last third is performingmiserably,” he said.

Thestateplanstoapplya“back-to-basics programme”, whereby focuswillbeplacedonfivepillars—puttingthe people first, making sure serviceprovision on a basic level is effective,ensuring good governance and ac-countability, creating robust institu-tions through skilled and able staffand looking at placing professionalsat district level, which are accessibleto local governments.

AN otherwise successful Umdoni BusinessChamber annual general meeting onWednes-day15Octoberwaspre-terminatedbyaconsti-tutional disagreement which blocked the elec-tion of a committee for the 2014/15 year.

By thatstagenear theend, thewellattendedmeeting at Scottburgh Town Hall had heardabout a year of considerable progress in termsof expanding membership and its influence inthe economic life of the region.

As Umdoni speaker Sykes Naidoo empha-sised, standing in for absentMayor SiyabongaKhwela, the expansion extended to UmdoniCouncil where “a mutually meaningful rela-tionship had been laid”.

He suggested that local businesses supportthe chamber so that it has the resources to takethe partnership further.

He also believes that the absorption of Vu-lamehlo will “create a wealth of opportunitiesfor business to tap into and achieve amore ef-fective participation in the running of the mu-nicipality”.

UBC president Sunny Saman focused on

three spheres in his report to members — thehistory of the chamber, the status quo and thefuture.

He remindedmembers that the sugar com-panies of a century and a half ago — currentrepresentatives of which were now membersand sitting in the audience — had been thebackboneof the localeconomyover thatperiodand were still initiating growth and develop-ment.

On the status quo and the future, he regret-tedthatmanychallengesremainedalthoughsomuch had been achieved.

“Unemployment anda lackof skills arepar-ticularly felt, but I feel that long-term changesare around the corner and that the chamberwill play a significant part in that.”

Some acrimony crept in when the electionof a new committee ensued.

It stemmed from the adoption of a new con-stitution at the previous annual general meet-ing, and was exacerbated by contested nomi-nations, starting with president.

The matter could not be resolved and theelection andmeeting was postponed to a laterdate to be decided upon.

Kuswag.Thepitbull show is an eventwhere thedogs

run, jump and drag things around.Prizes were given to open class and regis-

tereddogsinthefollowingclasses—conforma-tion, long hang, high jump, weight pull andultra dog.

Thehighest jumpwas2.15metres, thewin-ning longhang lasted51minutes and themostweight pulled was 1.83 tons.

“The show is a qualifier for the provincialsand ultimately the SA champs,” Jeanette Eras-mus, the Pitbull Federation president said.

PBFSA has clubs in Cape Town, Pretoria,

West Rand and Port Elizabeth.Erasmus says anyone canparticipate in the

show, but to be a PBFSAmember they have toadhere to the mission statement.

“Wearestringentwhenitcomestoapplyingour rules and we have zero tolerance towardsanimal cruelty,” she says.

More than 50 dogs entered and more than300 people attended the show. People camefrom as far as Gauteng and the Free State(PBFSA Gold Fields) to enter their dogs.

The Pitbull Club has training every Sundayand invites everyone to join in.Thenextpitbullshow will be announced in the new year.

THIS month Honda celebrates the 40thanniversary of its Gold Wing touring­stylemotorcycle with the announcement of a“birthday edition” Wing. That’s a limitednumber and some will reach South Africanshowrooms.

Five years after producing its first superbike in 1969, the CB750 Honda created thefirst long­distance touring bike — theGL1000 Gold Wing.

It boasted shaft drive, a water­cooledflat four engine, disc brakes all around, atouring bike that set standards of comfortand sophistication previously unheard of.

Factor inalowcentre­of­gravity19­litrefuel tank, the bike offered a new twist tothe definition of high­speed motorcycletouring.

The bike had a relaxed feel about it, at120km/h the motor loped along at only4000rpm.

From standstill a 400m sprint saw atime of around 13 seconds, putting the bikein the same class as the rapid Kawasaki750 Triple and even a Laverda Jota.

Many owners fitted additional touring
