Ecstasy, partying with death

MIXED with alcohol, ecstasy can bedeadly because it can contain a widemixture of substances — from LSD,cocaine, heroin, amphetamine andmethamphetamine, to rat poison,

caffeine, dogdeworming substances, etc, and despite the “cute” logosdealers put on the pills, this is whatmakes ecstasy dangerous — a usernever knows what he or she is taking.

Ecstasy smothers the naturalalarm signals given out by the body.As a result, after taking the drug, anindividual risks going beyond his orher physical limitations and endurance.

Make sure you are aware of yourchild’s social life and where he or shegoes out to.

Shortterm effects or signs of ecstasy use include impaired judgment, false sense of affection, confusion, depression, sleep problems, severeanxiety, paranoia, muscle tension, faintness and chills or swelling, involuntary teeth clenching, blurred visionand nausea. — Supplied.

GRADE 12 pupils wrote theirfirst maths paper on Friday,31 October.

“ThisisthefirstgroupfromGrade10 on the new FET syllabus.

“The paper included probabilityand part of statistics for the firsttime,” said Kingsway High spokes-person, Elaine Woore.

Overall matrics said the paperwas easier than the text exam.

“It went better than I expected, but it was not easy,” Bonita van Zylcommented.

Eran Taylor thought it was “doa-ble”.

“It was what I thought it wouldbe,” he said.

“Most of the questionswere easy, but somequestions took a gooddeal

of time,” Neolen Nullian says.MatthewGabin says it was good,“It was just a bit long, but I was

well prepared which helped.”“It was very challenging and you

needed to think, but I completed thepaper in time,” Nonjabulo Cibanestated.

KuswagSkoolGrade12pupil,Ve-ronica Beetge says it is her fourthsubject and she found themaths pa-per “reasonable”.

Sybrand Strauss, Lu-Allen Kru-

ger and Stefan Coetzee at KuswagSkool wrote maths literacy.

“It was tough, but I enjoyed it be-cause Iwaswellprepared,”Sybrandsays.

“It was easier than expected, butit was a long paper,” Lu-Allen says.

The tricky maths literacy ques-tion kept Samantha Green andMaryna de Villiers occupied andtheyhad to redo the entire question, but Jeanne-Marie Fuhri reckoned itwas easier than the test exam.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

Premier’s remarks shockingTHE shocking utterances by KZNPremier Senzo Mchunu at thefuneral of Senzo Meyiwa are an in-sult to the thousands of victims ofcrime in this province.

Duringan interviewwith theBBChestated:“Weshouldnotexaggeratethelevelofcrimebecauseit isnot likeit affects each and every family.”

The premier’s statement showsthatheandhisexecutive live in ivorytowers with expensive and expan-sive security to protect them and

their families.Rising crime levels donot need to

beexaggerated—theyareevident inthe government’s own crime statis-tics. Many thousands of people aredirectly affected by violent crime ona daily basis with KZN crime levelsconsistently and unacceptably high.

On a positive note, the DA agreeswith the premier that “police [offic-ers] should get out of police stationstofightcrime”.Wealsocommendthescores of hard-working police men

and women who strive to keep ourcommunities safe and secure.

Disappointingly, thepremierwassilent on his own government’s fail-ure to tackle crime levels in theprov-ince.

With local government electionslooming, the premier should not un-derestimate the effect of crime inKZN. If anythinghe shouldbe listen-ing to the growing voice of discon-tent.

Municipal overview>> ‘’New application will revolutionise communication with municipalities’

TANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

ADDRESSING business peopleat the Durban South BusinessForum, Councillor André

Beetgeandchairpersonof the forum, presented a municipal overview forthe past month.

“There has been a problem withthe collection of orange bags. Theproblem started with the introduc-tion of a new contractor. He won anaward last year and I think it was acase of too much, too soon. Some ofthe contributing factors were a DSWstrike in thesameperiodandthecon-tractor was still unsure of the routes.

“Thanks to everybody on socialmedia, we were able to determinewhere they did not collect andwithintwodayseverythinghadbeencollect-

ed.”Referring to the “big gaping hole”

on the corner of Ross and KhotoMakhanya streets, Beetge explainedthatacontractor, meant toput inaca-ble, drilled underneath the road intoa water pipe and also into Telkomcables.Theyhavebeenworkingtore-pair the problem, which should besorted out shortly.

Theyhaveaskedroadworkstopri-oritise and complete the repairs toroad surfaces in areas leading to thebeachfirst, inviewofschoolholidays.

“In the next six months to a year, municipalitieswill launchanapplica-tion for phones so that you can getyourwater and electricity account onyour phone,” said Beetge. The appli-cationwill revolutionisecommunica-tion with your municipality.

“You could for instance take a pic-ture of the rubbish on your street andsendit throughtoalert themorcreatean accident alert,” Beetge said.

“Theyranatrial in therevenuede-partment and it seems to work well.If you own multiple properties youshouldbeabletologinandcheckyourwater and electricity for all of them.”

Style upgrade for Pajero in SA>> ‘Pajero remains the epitome of offroad ability’

MITSUBISHI South Africa has addedseveral style enhancements to itsPajero range which, its claims, are

the result of customers’ feedback. The 2014 Pajero range comprises SWB

GLS, LWB GLS and a longwheelbase GLSExceed.

Each is powered by a 140kW/441Nm,3.2litre, turbodiesel driving through a fivespeed auto to all four wheels courtesy ofthe automaker’s now iconic Super Select4WD system with change on the fly up to100km/h.

The 4x4 gains a new grille and bumperdesign, LEDs and new alloy rims. A newmore sturdy sparewheel cover on LWB derivatives covers the entire spare wheel.

The cabin gains a standard reversingcamera which displays on the infotainment system and the entire range benefitsfrom auto headlightdimming.

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa chiefoperating officer, Wynand Pretorius, said:

“We know we have a winning formula withPajero. It remains the epitome of offroad

ability meeting urban comfort and practicality.”

The Super Select 4WD modes, as described by the automaker:

2H — for normal driving4H — all four wheels are engaged for

greater control with 34% of the power distributed to the front wheels and 66% tothe rear wheels, giving it a typical AWD vehicle experience. The 4H mode can be engaged at up to 100km/h.

4HLc — changes are made to the traction control system and the centre differential lock is engaged. It distributes powerequally to the front and rear wheels.”

4LLc — for lowgrip and extreme terrain. The 4LLc engages low range and deactivates traction control. The rear differantial lock can be engaged manually bymeans of a switch, according to the driver’sneeds and environment demands.

Standard kit includes, power windows, privacy glass, sliding front armrest (twostorage compartments), reclining rearseats and an extra two right at the backin the longwheelbase model (seven in total).

According to the Mitsubishi, its Pajero

is “able to safely operate on 500ppm (ofsulphur) diesel when necessary”.

In terms of safety, all derivatives haveantilock brakes with electronic pressuredistribution, emergency braking assistance, active stability and traction control, six airbags, immobiliser and alarm as wellas remote central locking.

Mitsubishi’s (Reinforced Impact SafetyEvolution (Rise) chassis and body construction is also used which earned thePajero a fivestar Euro NCAP safety rating.

All 2014 Mitsubishi Pajeros are soldwith a threeyear or 100 000km warrantyand a fiveyear or 100 000km maintenance plan, with service intervals every10 000km.
