Selecting and designating areas of land asnatural reserves

Allocating different land use intensities within a natural reserve

    Nature conservation

It can be defined as protection of natural richness of a landscape. (Soil, geomorphology, vegetation, flora, fauna).

Ecological evaluation is the process of assessing the significance of an area for naturalconservation.

Ecological evaluation framework includes themaintenance of natural areas and their biological diversity and maintenance of socialfunctions provided by natural areas.

Criteria for maintenance of natural areas andtheir biological diversity

Rarity: A measure of how frequently certainspecies or ecosystem types are encountered.

Diversity: A measure of the number of different types of species or habitat types that exist in a given area.

Size: The measure of the extent of area.

Naturalness: The degree to which ecosystemis free from biophysical disturbance caused by human activities.

Fragility: The degree of sensitivity of speciesor ecosystems to environmental changes. Themore fragile they are, the greater is require

    ment for their protection.

Connectivity: A measure of how well the spatial distribution of the natural areas suppor

    ts the interaction amongst them.

    1. Ecocity planning(1) Urban Ecosystem

Urban Ecosystem consists of people andresources.

Human beings build up a society and createa new form of nature. They use a lot of

resources and energy to produce goods and, consequently, generate wastes.

Natural environment is the main concern ofecocity planning, particularly the effort toreconstruct human being's society.

    Background

    1. Environmental problems have been identified

    2. International movement for lasting development

    3. Using technology resources and energy4. Development of nature demobilization technology

    1. Ecocity Planning(2) The concept of Ecocity planning

    Consider cities as an organism

Making various activities and structure inthe city considers the natures diversity, independence, circulation and safety

A city that people and nature coexist

    Goals of ecological urban planning

    1. Saving energy (economize oil, electricity, etc.)

    2. Urban planting for water permeability

    3. Solving the problem of urban desertificationand water permeability

*Almost all public buildings were already implementing the ecological urban plan

    Planting along hillside roads

    - There are cut-slopes due to road construction

    that serve as ecotone*

Road construction should be conducted not to destroy a large partof vegetation communities and change configuration of ground.

*the transition zone between two different plant communities(ex. zone between forest and prairie)
