The Urban Liaison Magazine is almost five years old! Our next issue will be our fifth year in print. I can’t help looking back on this last five years and thinking--where has the time gone? Since I started this venture, my children have all graduated high school and are almost done with college. My husband has two years until he retires from The Union Pacific Railroad. My two precious dogs are

older and showing the signs of the fact. As I look back on my entire life, I do believe that during these last five years, I have changed the most. I’m not the same person I was--when I dreamed up the insane idea of starting a local mag-azine! I had literally just read that 9 out of 10 new magazines fail. And truthfully, mine has been close many times. It hasn’t been a walk in the park, trying to get this magazine off the ground and making a profit. And while the idea of writing myself a check, every once in awhile, would be nice--I wouldn’t continue to produce this magazine if I was only thinking of my own financial gain.

Through all of my hard work, determination, business, and life lessons along the way, I know in my heart that my adventure in publishing has been worth all the blood, sweat, and tears. I have learned so many things. I love and honor the person that I have become. More importantly, I love all the people I have met along the way. With over 100 local advertisers, I have been fortunate enough to meet local business owners who have experienced the same trials and hard-ships as me--and managed to beat the odds! My message this issue is to all of those small business owners out there. I want you to know that I understand your pain---which is why I push the LOCAL MESSAGE with every issue. The Urban Liaison Magazine is about you, your business, and our community. The pages feature local business owners who give it their all, seven days a week, three hundred and sixty-five days a year, to grow their business--which helps our community and makes everyone’s lives easier.

Please share this magazine. I urge you to also please make an effort to shop from the retailers featured in our pages. Please push the local movement and keep it at the top of your mind, anytime you’re going to spend your hard earned dollars--make a conscious decision to spend them locally. You will be helping a cause that is bigger than yourself. It encompasses your home, neighbors, and community. Shop local, eat local, and live local…you will be glad you did, I promise.

Blessings,

I have been involved in photography since childhood, being introduced to it at an early age by my parents. I was allowed to pursue my interests by learning the old way… with film and a darkroom. I have been able to combine my passion of design and composi-tion which expanded to the architectural profession.

I am very fortunate to be able to work in the fields I love. For me, photography consistently provides new challenges and rewards. Looking through the lens is what I've always liked to do. I think it's because of the way it reduces and simplifies the world around us. Making photographs relaxes me, it's my therapy.

TREASURE VALLEY HOSPICETreasure Valley Hospice has been part of my magazine for over 4 years. They have supported me and my business and have believed and understood what my mission is--supporting local businesses. Did you know that many local Hospice Agencies are not locally owned? This is in fact, true. Many are owned by large corporations, located somewhere in the world. Treasure Valley Hospice has an outstanding team of professionals to help those who are ready for Hospice. Education is another important fac-tor for Treasure Valley Hospice. There are many misconceptions regarding Hospice. If you have any questions about this valuable service, please contact Honey at 208-467-Hospice. Honey Good-man is the Community Outreach Director and has been known in our area, as a woman with integrity, a large heart and a kind soul. In the four years that she has been on board with me, she has passed out thousands of magazines to people in our area. I owe her a great debt of gratitude for believing in me and I know for a fact, Treasure Valley Hospice is a leader in the Hospice Industry.

THE SHILO Inn And SUITESThe Shilo Inn and Suites in Nampa has been beyond good to me and the magazine. Sometimes I am uncertain how in the world I have been so blessed to work with folks with such caring hearts and that support my cause. Alan Jones, the Marketing and Sales Manager featured here with his handsome picture, makes sure our UL Networking Meetings run like clockwork. The staff makes sure that the room is set up to fit our ever growing meetings, the coffee and ice water are full, and even that attention to the temperature in the room is set just right. The attention to detail is beyond good customer service, it is Superior Customer Service. Cindy Sullivan, the Hotel Manager came up with the idea of a networking meeting for the UL and now, almost four years later, we hold one of the largest monthly networking events in the valley. If you need a meeting space, rooms for corporate meetings, or just a getaway for a ro-mantic evening, you should try the Shilo Inn. I bet if you mentioned the Urban Liaison Magazine at the Nampa location, you just might get a “SPECIAL” rate. Call 498-1000 today!

dEbORAH bYROn LEffLERThe economy has more or less been on the decline the past 5 years. Within that time frame, I have watched many real estate professionals slowly move on to do something else. But there are a few “life-timers” that have made a living through the downtime. These are people who have an intense work ethic, have knowl-edge and passion of the industry and who have learned to be flex-ible and think outside the box. But most of all, it’s the people who understand customer service; the ones who put their clients at the “Top Priority Level,” which would describe Deborah byron Leffler. This woman is all heart. I love to sit and talk with her. Her positive energy is contagious. She loves what she does and it shows in all she does. I know that the market is picking up. If you are thinking of selling or listing your home and want to work with a professional with years of experience, that will put you on a first priority level, she would be your gal. Robert ‘Rocky’ Detwiler is the founder of an inspirational message, athletic apparel company utilizing scientifically proven messaging located in boise. Samsonwear.com was born from the ashes of recovery

from Rocky’s own personal life disasters. These events included betrayal, suicidal level depression, living in a treehouse for a year, and significant financial loss that were all the result of becoming the victim of a multimillion

dollar Ponzi scheme. A life transformational expert and goal coach, Rocky shares a message of hope to millions. Rocky has selected a few inspirational members of the Treasure Valley that share his heart of

transformation, strength, perseverance, power, courage, inspiration and above all nEvER GIvE UP!

Meridian Mayor Tammy de Weerd’s invitation to be featured in an inspirational story is obvious to

anyone who knows her. Her vision and coalition-building skills reflect her commitment to active participation and leadership; and by

recognizing the city’s greatest asset - the talents of its people. She is an inspirational teen mentor,

wife, mother, and professional who mirrors the positive message of inspiration that Samsonwear.

com was created to emulate and inspire.

Eagle Mayor Jim Reynolds attends a business men's prayer breakfast weekly with Rocky. During this time, Mayor Jim has become a mentor and example of excellence to Rocky with his drive and vision for the people that live in the city he loves and leads by example. Jim is a believer in dedication, the power of positive words, the message of triumph over adversity, and most importantly the perseverance to never Give Up!

Keisha Oliver, a junior at Rocky Mountain High is a varsity cheerleader, varsity track sprinter and triple jumper, member of student council and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Keisha was chosen to be featured because of her life par-ticipation and her belief in the Samson Wear message. “I believe the message/words on SW apparel can inspire teens to move forward and keep going no matter how hard it gets. Only God truly knows what you are capable

of and if you never push yourself you will never know. I believe it could be a trend in the teen world.”

Nico Piccioni, a freshman at Eagle High has always been

an excellent student and likes to finish any project he begins.

“More importantly I like to be a positive influence on others. I support the power of positive

words and the inspirational messages of SW. Thank you

Rocky for creating these inspi-rational messages for youth.”

Nanette Talbot, a single mom of 5, shares a story not about struggle, but about triumph. She was diagnosed with Addison's, an incur-able disease and after years of futile effort for healing, despite the lack of evidence that it was possible, she created her own positive results. “It took years to develop that balance, but I made it! And it all began with that vital decision to never Give Up! When I heard Rocky speak about his impactful message of

hope, I knew he had discovered an amaz-ing way to share the power to overcome through positive words. His personal story of life transformation will change my life forever.”

Victoria Savage has always felt a deep connection to the elderly population. when she was five years old, Victo-ria’s favorite playmate was not a peer, but her eighty-two year old neighbor. Through this friendship, she learned the importance of having strong relationships with se-niors. She came to understand that seniors can sometimes be deprived of socialization, and they need camaraderie just as much as the younger generation.

Victoria, otherwise known as “Nurse Savage,” began her nursing career twenty years ago. She constantly strived to provide exceptional care, immersing herself in the experi-ence that can only come with the daily individualized care of others. She recognized seniors struggled with feeling discounted and devalued. They grew discouraged because their health and requests for a better quality of life were not being addressed properly. The way seniors were be-ing treated and their living conditions concerned Nurse Savage. Her mission became clear: to be the change she wanted to see by becoming a nursing-based care manager and fierce elder care client advocate.

Care for Living is Nurse Savage’s solution to how to pro-vide seniors with the care they need to live safer, healthier and happier in their own homes. She knows that seniors crave longer independence and socialization, and they just need access to the tools and resources to allow them to do so. After children leave the home, and when retire-ment has long been obtained, seniors fight to maintain their integrity. Seniors may wonder how and where they fit into society. Through Care for Living, Nurse Savage’s proactive and preventive care approach helps seniors to function at their highest maximum levels, thereby giving them the ability to live in their homes to experience their highest quality of life.

Typically, the advocacy process begins when a senior’s relative or caregiver calls Nurse Savage for an assessment. This consists of a three hour comprehensive analysis of the senior’s current overall situation. Nurse Savage evaluates the mental and physical condition of the cli-ent and examines their living environ-ment. She also reviews the client’s cur-rent nutritional habits and all medications and herbs that are being taken. Then, she makes a plan of care for the senior in an attempt to mitigate any foreseeable risk. Nurse Savage effectively communicates with relatives and caregivers, so everyone has a clear ongoing understanding and can support the plan of care for the senior.

Out-of-the box thinking is Nurse Sav-age’s forte, as she employs many methods to ensure seniors get what they want and need in all areas of life. She creatively sets up safe medication systems for her clients and prevents unneeded hospital trips by installing safety precautions within the home. Should an accident occur, fail-safe systems are arranged to alert a third party that immediate assistance is needed. She has teamed with partners throughout the community to provide services that a se-nior may need. For example, if downsiz-ing is necessary, she will refer a specialist to help the family organize and compas-sionately move the senior to a more ap-propriate living situation. Nurse Savage prides herself in non-abrasively speaking

the truth in love, while providing a highly specialized clinical and nurs-ing-based service.

An important aspect of Care for Liv-ing is implementing proper nutri-tional strategies for the clients. Nurse Savage recognizes that poor nutrition for seniors can cause mental clarity to decline and skin and body systems to suffer. Sometimes appetite diminishes for seniors and she has developed a concentrated nutritional protein shake called, “The Nurse Savage Se-nior Success Shake” to combat this. She also offers phytonutrients to her seniors with her “Juice Plus System,” which can be taken in gummy or pill form. Clients have seen marked im-provement in their overall health be-cause of Nurse Savage’s innovative nutrition plan.

If you are concerned with the well-being of your aging parent and don’t know how to get the help you need, call Nurse Savage at Care for Living. She can work out the logistics neces-sary for your loved one to be highly socialized and well cared for in their own home. Her attitude of being se-rious about her work, but also seri-ous about having fun at work will set you at ease, and give you the peace of mind that your special senior will re-ceive the best possible quality of care.

What are some things a senior advocate does? An advocate can accompany a senior to a Dr. appointment or other professional service appointment to help facilitate effective communication between the senior and the health professional. An advocate can attend to a client during hospitalization, and can also review hospital bills to ensure accuracy.

Nurse Savage offers packages for her services including the very popular package, “The Silver Package” - a nurse on call 24/7, a visit/assessment every week, and a phone call.

Victoria is the proud recipient of the Zion’s Bank Smart Women’s Grant Award because of the free community education seminars she provides to caregivers of the aging population.

If you live out of town and have a senior family member in need of some assistance, get

"Nurse Savage" on their side.

You'll have peace of mind knowing that an expert is

looking out for them.

And they will have greater success physically and mentally

and emotionally.

It is exciting to plan a big trip out of the country. whether you are vacationing in China, doing business in Japan, going on a mission in Ethiopia, or going anywhere else in the world, it is important to budget for a sometimes overlooked expense of travel outside of the states, travel vaccines.

Each country has its own unique mix of health issues and they change peri-odically. Just because you’ve been to a certain locale before, do not assume you have all the required vaccines. Each time you travel, check to see if you are in need of additional vaccines, or boosters for those you may have had in the past.

To find out what vaccines are recom-mended for your destination, go to the CDC website at www.cdc.gov. It is important to educate yourself on what vaccines are needed to ensure you are fully immunized prior to your trip, but it is also important to find a provider that will con-firm your immunization needs.

Contact your physician or travel health department a minimum of four to six weeks before your travel dates. This will allow your provider time to order vaccines that may not be in stock; or to administer them in an adequate time frame. Some vaccines may take weeks or months to develop full immunity.

‘Expect More from Medicine’For more information, visit SaltzerMed.com

Visit us online SaltzerMed.com

PLAN AHEAD FOR SuMMER VAcATIONSIn addition to required vaccines it is also important to review your routine vaccines each time you travel. It is recommended that you stay current on your MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) and Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) as well as Influenza. Currently there is a travel advisory regarding a Polio outbreak in China and parts of the Middle East and Africa and they are recom-mending a polio booster if traveling in these specific areas. It is important to check the CDC website often to be sure you are pre-pared for whatever may come your way while you are traveling.

Sometimes travel vaccines may seem expensive and they are normally not covered by insurance, but if you compare it to the cost of having a major illness far from home where there may not be qual-ity healthcare available to you and your family, or the expense of an air ambulance, the cost of immunizations seems minimal.

Jules Coon and Cheryl Richard are Perren baker’s fitness clients. Jules, suffering from a knee injury, didn’t believe she’d be able to work out like she once did. Cheryl had pain and injuries, too.

“They’ve come a long way in having the confidence to train again,” says Perren, “I’ve been amazed at how far I can push them. Jules goes through a range of motion even I questioned she’d be able to do. And no one ever put Cheryl through move-ments that proved her strength. She is absolutely one of the stron-gest women I know, doing stuff that takes amazing core strength.”

Both women have lost over thirty inches. Inches don’t lie, says Jules. Cheryl loved the option to have personal training with Perren be-fore she got into classes, and is happy with her progress.

“I couldn’t do many things. No planks or bear crawls or those stu-pid…” she laughed, “burpees! Now I swing forty pound kettlebells.”

Perren teaches safety and perfect form, vital for clients with past injuries. Going further daily, their new lifestyle has a ripple effect. Cheryl now works in her garden without pain, saying that every-thing is easier. Jules shares, “I feel different, and I’m teaching my

Two of Treasure Valley’s exceptional fitness trainers, Perren Baker and Brandon Jenkins, show us why they stand out from the

iron-pumping crowd in the first part of a two part series.

Weighing almost 300 pounds in his teens, Brandon Jenkins understands being over-weight. A pivotal moment caused him to

make a shift, and once he saw success, bodybuild-ing became his passion. Wanting to help others, Brandon’s approach includes body, mind and spirit.

“I’m already in their mind. I know there’s something inside driving that weight gain. Address what’s driv-ing it, and you can shut that off.”

For the psychology major, getting to the root of addictive behaviors is where it starts. Once that happens, more than just physical weight is lifted.

“They can love themselves and not be so critical,” says brandon, “Others help them by commenting, ‘Wow, you look different,’ or, ‘I can tell your posture is better.’ When clients and others notice changes, that’s a huge motivator.”

kids. We’re eating healthier food in its whole forms.”

People tell both ladies they look good, and ask what they’re doing.

Both clients have a ‘can do’ at-titude, and feel that Perren, raised by parents knowledgeable about health and nutrition, was destined for fitness coaching. both get emotional when discussing their journey, appreciative of how their coach cares. They truly believe he’s coaching to offer selfless service.

“It doesn’t matter what you did wrong, it matters what you did right,” says the always-encouraging coach, “They’ve seen posi-tive results, and now have the confidence to overcome anything. They’re living proof.”

brandon prays that God will lead him to those he can help. He met Tracy Elsberg when a friend of her friend’s spread the word. In her early twenties, Tracy lost almost 200 pounds with a trainer, then gained it all back. Brandon’s method really works for her. If she doubts herself, Brandon is there, telling her she can do it.

“He breaks down boundaries, gets down to real is-sues. I haven’t had that before. Brandon has been a great part of my journey.”

The 42-year-old, once worried about her age and health, is now attending culinary school and will soon be her own boss. She has lost 165 pounds.

Brandon believes helping people get healthy touches more than just that one life.

“When you touch one life, you’re not just touching one. If someone feels good about themselves, they give that out to everyone else.”

Let me introduce myself. My name is Wayne Faw. I lost how I was making a living with the stroke of a pen and a call to

the FAA. I was a contract pilot and I had my childhood dream. It was stripped away from me in a FLASH! My livelihood was gone with the decision of a medical professional. This doctor didn't discuss the matter with me. He told me what he had done and sent me on my way, without a second thought. What was I to do? I was upside down on my house, my finances where not good. Overall this was the bottom of the bottom. I had nowhere to turn. Thankfully I have a supportive and loving wife.

Due to that situation, I had to leave my family for a year and go two states over to find employment. Fortunately, I found jobs that brought out my abili-ties in sales and marketing. During this process I was making changes to my lifestyle and within 1 year had my pi-lot’s license reinstated. I did this by find-ing a holistic approach to health. This was amazing to me and others; I did it without the use of traditional medi-cine! This was more significant than having my pilot’s license revoked. I learned how to heal my body and had alternative choices. A new world was opened up to me in the health care

area. This is how I decided to become an educated consumer and take con-trol of my own health. I now work with doctors who educate people to help change lives. This approach allows patients power and control over their own healthcare decisions.

During an appointment in 2009, Dr. Trites stated, “We are going to put you on a Nobel Prize Medical proto-col. First, I am going to test you with

the latest technol-ogy; an FDA ap-proved Cardio

P u l s e - W a v e Class II Medi-cal Device.” The results stated my heart health and vascular

health was simi-lar to a 60-year-

old man. That’s not too bad for

a 54-year-old man with cardiovascular dis-

ease. After following the protocol and not changing

my lifestyle, diet, or exercise, I was retested six months later. I tested

out to have the heart and veins of a 30-year-old man. Yahoo! I am younger inside and feeling great! That was 3 1/2 years ago. I retested again in Decem-ber of 2012 and I am still as a 30-year-old, in my heart and veins and feeling better than ever and healthier than I was 20 years ago!

I invite you to experience this well-documented (hidden) 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine protocol.

pring brings thoughts of getting outdoors to do all those warm weather activities and of course Spring cleaning. Where to start? How to get moti-

vated? This year, the Women's Health & Fit-ness Faire brings together local fitness and health experts including Crossfit Expedition.

john Hassell of CrossFit Expidition explains, " CrossFit is a strength and conditioning pro-gram that incorporates elements of Olym-pic weight lifting, power lifting, gymnastics, track, and many other elements useful to everyday life. All workouts are scalable to any level to include couch potato, soc-cer mom, elite special forces troops, high school students, triathletes, grandparents and anyone in between. The physical de-mands placed on these different popu-lations vary by degree and intensity not functionality. Everyone squats. Whether it is to get out of a chair, pick up groceries, a child, or as part of your job. Learning and having good mechanics in the squat as with any other exercises is key not only to injury prevention but longevity. "

Something as simple as getting rid of that pile of gently used shoes in the back of your closet can create more room and spark the spring cleaning frenzy. Consider do-nating them to Soles4Souls. Karen Hughes with Bandals is sponsoring this year's used shoe drive at the Spring Shopping Experi-ence. This is an amazing organization that provides shoes for needy and micro-

enterprising people in Haiti. Soles4souls gave over 264,000 pairs of used shoes to micro-enterprising individuals to help drive the economy and provide jobs. In the Asian tsunami in 2004, and then again during Hurricane Katrina over a quarter of million shoes were delivered to help those in need. S4S mission is to collect new and like new shoes to give to victims of abject suffering and to collect used shoes to support micro business efforts to eradicate poverty. To date, S4S has given over 19 million shoes to over 127 countries, there are over 2.2 billion children in the world and it is estimated that over 1 billion live in poverty. It is estimated that over 300 million have no shoes on their feet. According to EPA statistics, Ameri-cans threw away approximately 790,000 tons of footwear and apparel in 2010.

If each person in the Treasure Valley could give just one pair of unused or outgrown shoes to this amazing organization we would have over 200,000 pairs of shoes. IMAGInE the joy on those children’s fac-es to know that they don’t have to worry about disease, parasites or lost productivity again. One pair is all it takes. When you come to the Health and Women’s faire on May 4, just grab a pair and drop them off at the entrance next to the Bandals Footwear booth, Talk to Karen about Bandals, Soles-4souls, or the amazing things happening in the world today. I know you will enjoy it.

Seminars will be presented throughout the day as well as an afternoon fashion show sponsored by babe On A budget.

Seminars include subjects such as self- esteem, cooking from your pantry, finances and more. Stevens Henegar will be on site with more information about their educational programs. And of course...shopping from local vendors! This promises to be a fun-filled, educational day.

I’m sure if you ask any business owner today if running their business is easy--you would hear a common theme of “longer hours, less money, up and

down sales, and more competition than ever.” So why don’t we give up? We can’t. We believe in the business that we’ve built. We’ve been through good times, and we’ve survived these last four-five years. That is something to be proud of. I admire a small business owner as one of the most courageous people that I know. The struggle that each one goes through to keep their business alive, be a good spouse and parent, make sure that they support their employees, serve their customers, pay their vendors, and then to have enough energy to get up the next day. Not to mention the motivation it takes to keep a smile on their face with an upbeat attitude while on the inside stress and fear are consuming them on how to meet payroll each week. This is the normal life of a business owner, day after day, and those have been some long days since 2008.

A business owner with a family---being focused on the family needs to be your first priority. When we are at home we need to focus on our spouse and children. They need our attention, we need to ask them how their day was, and listen very intently to the details. The key to a successful marriage during tough times is com-munication with love and care. I give my wife time every night where I’m focused on her. The same goes for our children. The outside pressures of being a kid is more difficult than ever; we must spend time with our children. We need to teach them, love them, and guide them on this journey to becoming adults. Don’t wait for your kids to ask you to do something, go join them and do what they want to do. This will lead to getting more love from them and our kids will want to spend more time with their parents. The key to being a successful spouse and parent is to spend quality time with them and be present.

To be successful as a business owner you must be successful at home. Your home is your support system so build the relationships with your children and spouse and then you will have a different outlook on your business. My family comes first, that’s what’s important, and that is what I focus on. Once you have that solid family focus then you transfer that energy to your business. Your business is what provides for your family. Your business pays for your home, kid’s sports, vacation, and the lifestyle that you have. Having this purpose for your business should help you realize why you are in business.

Let’s recap. being a business owner is tough, defi-nitely the toughest thing I’ve done in my lifetime. To have a successful business, marriage, and fam-ily, you must make the time. As time passes quicker each year, we can never get back those moments with our family---if we are spending them at work. A small business owner that makes all three work is someone that I admire.

Hello again, UL readers! I’m Patti Saunders Mays, author of “Was It Something I Said? Common Things We All Do That Drive Others Away without Knowing It (And What to do Instead.)”

This little eBook is impacting lives! I’m so thankful for all your emails, comments and reviews. Something that seems consistent is that many of you want to know what the “style” or “tone” is. Does it read like a textbook, an instruction manual, or is it in story form? So in this issue of UL I’m publishing a little section from Chapter 5, page 24. . .

“I first met Darcy at a church bazaar and I was instantly enthralled. She was such an interesting person! She had so much going on in her life. She was active and involved with her family, our church, and our community, she was an accomplished cook, and she even wrote a weekly newspaper column. She had an upbeat way about her with an optimistic outlook.

She and her husband were financially secure and lived in a beautiful home, and they traveled often and always had fun stories to share. Darcy looked terrific, too. No matter what she was doing or wearing, she just carried the whole thing off with pizzazz. I looked

up to her very much, loved hearing about her life and how she managed it, and used her as a stan-dard I constantly strived to meet.

Darcy and I were close friends for many months when all of a sudden, for no reason that I could put my finger on, she started to irritate me. I started getting bored with her perfect-in-every-way life and got fidgety when she gave all the glittery details. The things I had

so admired about her in the beginning started driving me batty. Her perfect marriage, popular children, successful writing career, decorating skills, stories from her enter-taining and traveling, the endless stream of invitations, compliments, and special acknowledgements she and her husband and their kids got that she “just couldn’t wait to share” got on my nerves. In fact, I found myself silently screaming, “Get me out of here!”

What happened? I wasn’t able to figure it out for quite a while, but Darcy made the mistake that so many people make. She confused making an impression with trying to

impress. These two sound like the same thing, but they’re miles apart, and to confuse the two is social suicide . . .”

The whole book is written in that tone. It’s interesting and fun to read! It’s even funny in some parts, filled with personal (true) stories from my life that have contributed to my life-long interest in social interactions and how we continually mess up. Are you mak-ing these mistakes? Find out, and improve your life!

There are times when words and people have such a positive and profound effect on our lives that we would not be where we are today if it wasn’t for their influence. This was the case for me and my business after reading a little red book titled “The Go-Giver" (co-

authored by Bob Burg and John David Mann). Just three weeks after its release in 2007, The Go-Giver shot to #6 on The Wall Street journal’s business bestsellers list. Since then, it has been translated into 21 languages and over a quarter million copies have been sold.

Have you ever experienced something so amazing that you couldn’t contain your excite-ment and wanted to share it with everyone you knew? When I purchased my first copy, I couldn’t put it down. I read it cover to cover and after I’d finished, I grabbed my keys, got in my car, drove to our local Barnes & Noble and bought every copy they had in stock. I began to hand them out to people around the business community that I knew who, like the main character in the parable (Joe), were real go-getters. I became an instant raving fan, a walking ambassador, a Go-Giver evangelist so to speak.

How do you go about thanking someone whose influence made a significant difference in the way you conduct business and live life? Despite the economic downturn, an astounding transformation began to occur in my own business and life. Over the course of a few months while I was implementing the books simple principles (the 5 Laws of Strato-spheric Success), my client base doubled and doors of op-portunity opened up that I never had expected. One of those doors connected me directly with Bob Burg in late summer of 2009. I clearly remember the day I was on the phone with him for the first time, discussing the new coach-ing certification program he was developing. I kept thinking to myself, “WOW… I’m actually talking to bob burg… THE Bob Burg - the guy who wrote this powerful little book I’m hold-ing in my hand!” Not long after that conversation, I made the decision to join bob’s team of certified coaches & consultants, which is without a doubt, one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Bob is not only a bestselling author and international speaker who shares information on topics vital to the success of today’s businessperson; he is also an advocate, supporter and defender of the Free Enterprise system, he believes that the amount of money you earn is directly proportional to how many people you serve and how well you serve them. Bob walks his talk; he is an authentic, value-driven man of noble character, a great thought leader, teacher, mentor and friend! “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin Thank you for involving me Bob and for inspiring me to be the best me I can be!

i was asked recently what success means to me. I used to define suc-cess in terms of what I accomplished, what I achieved, what I could

buy, and where my life was going. I was fo-cused on getting the promotion, driving the nice car, living in the nice house, and hav-ing the ideal family and relationships. I had all of this but still success was in the future, the next thing to get. This definition meant that success was unattainable and out of reach as I clawed my way to "success.”

not only was this definition of success in the future but it was also outside of me. It was an outside-in definition. It was a definition of how I thought it should be like, or more ac-curately, how I should look to others. When we focus our lives on looking successful from the outside, we move away from our-selves and away from being happy with what we have nOW.

One of my teachers, Dr. Robert Holden taught me the concept he calls "Destina-tion Addiction.” As he explains in his book Success Intelligence, "People who suffer from Destination Addiction believe that success is a destination. They are addicted to the idea that the future is where success is, happiness is, and heaven is. Each pass-ing moment is merely a ticket to get to the future." As I learned and thought about this concept, I could see where I was caught up in that same race and that it wasn't working for me. I longed for a life of happi-ness and peace, a life filled with joy today. It was clear to me that I needed a new defi-nition of success in my life. I needed one that included following my joy, love, know-ing myself, and living in the now.

So, what does success mean to me now? Redefining my definition of success has

allowed me to find the joy, peace, and happiness today. For me, real authentic success is:

• Be Real

• Be Joy

• Be Love

• Be Thankful

• Be Present

• Be Me

• Just Be

This definition of success doesn't stop me from creating even more for myself in business, finances, relationships, and liv-ing my great life on my terms. Instead, I now do all of those things with a peaceful quiet mind, not the frantic frenzy that I did before. In slowing down and being, I create more. That is where the magic of life happens.

This now successful business is head-quartered in Meridian and started right here in Idaho. CEO Ron Kern and vice President Lisa Kern began their business in a basement with nothing more than

a cardboard table. With a lot of hard work, a belief in honesty and integrity, and with prayers the company started to grow. Ron logged many hours in that basement and his efforts eventually caught the eye of the na-tional media. Interviews with The New York Times, The Washington Times, Family Circle Magazine, and ABC’s 20/20 expedited the growth of his business.

With little business and Ron and Lisa as the only employees, they took a leap of faith and rented a space in Meridian. Soon after, they were able to hire their first employee. The leap paid off and they have since outgrown four offices and employ more than 35 people. Over the last 21 years, Ron and his team have developed a network that encompasses the entire United States. Shadow Trackers possess a contact in every county in the United States, and many across the world. This network ben-efits their clients tremendously and separates them from their competitors.

Ron attributes the success of Shadow Trackers to hard work, honesty and diligence in fulfill-ing the promises he makes to his clients. He is a firm believer in treating others the way he wants to be treated, offering a fair price to

his clients and providing every customer the same level of five star service.

This belief stems from his confidence in client satisfaction. Ron feels that every customer should be treated as if they are the only cus-tomer. “When I make a call to a company, I want someone to talk to. In this day and age of tweets, texts and Facebook, there is still a lot to be said about the need and desire to actually speak to someone. We provide hu-man interaction by actually speaking to our clients.”

Despite the success of his world-renowned business, Ron believes in helping his commu-nity. “Our philosophy is, if you’re being blessed as a business or an individual, you’re being blessed for a reason and that is to be a bless-ing to others.” For this reason Ron and Lisa continually give back to their community.

Every year Shadow Trackers sponsors local families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. He also routinely donates funds to local charities and non-profits. “When we donate locally we can physically see the impact on the com-munity and know that we are helping those around us in need.”

Ron feels that Shadow Trackers would not be in the position to give back if it were not for God and his partner in life, Lisa Kern. “Had it not been for her support long ago, I wouldn’t be where I am today personally, nor would Shadow Trackers. I was worried about risking it all to follow the dream of owning my own busi-ness. However, her belief in my abilities never wavered. She asked me, ‘do you want to be in a rocking chair at 70 wondering what if?’” With that, Shadow Trackers has traversed its meager beginnings and become a successful company that continually gives thanks to its community.

“It is pretty amazing to reflect back on things. I can tell you this, I would have sincerely re-gretted not following my dreams. With God’s blessings and Lisa’s support, I am fortunate and thankful for everything, I feel abundantly blessed. I never take anything for granted.”

Owners Tyson Griffeth and his dad call this the ‘Cheers’ factor, people like going where everybody knows their name.

Looking for a business to purchase, the Griffeths did their home-work. When the Meineke name came up, they studied it out. They discovered a good national name, good reputation, and bought the franchise. Name recognition was already there---a huge bonus---so they could concentrate on the service.

“The industry has not been known for its honesty,” said Tyson, “We thought if we ran an honest shop, there was unlimited growth potential.”

Tyson and his father looked around at the competition, find-ing there were very competent shops around, and realized if customers came to them, it was a high compliment. It became a true family business, with father, son, sister and wife working together.

Another big advantage was that the Griffeths are local owners, hiring local talent, and buying supplies from local stores. One employee opened with the store in 2000, worked elsewhere, and is now back. Many Meineke customers ask for ‘their’ technicians by name. A customer had called that day, saying, “Chris is awe-some, he did a terrific job. I want him to be the one to work on my car.”

Not everyone knows that Meineke of Caldwell is a full-service shop. “Short of bodywork, our technicians can do anything,” Tyson says.

The technicians, however, go beyond normal duties. One ap-proached the Griffeths about holding a free oil change day for

veterans. Meineke technicians and CWI volunteers donated time, vendors donated supplies, and the Griffeths donated the building and advertising.

“All the vets could say was ‘thank you, thank you, thank you,’” said Griffeth, adding, “We hope to do something similar again, like Mother’s Day oil changes for single moms.”

The Griffeths truly care about their customers, and it shows in the way they treat them. “We are very transparent about why we’re suggesting repairs, showing the customer the problem, so they understand. Once they know what worn-out brakes look like, no one will ever pull a fast one on them. Next time they’re told ‘your brakes are gone’, they’ll say, ‘let me see them.’”

Meineke customers enjoy another aspect; the place is extremely clean. “My parents are clean freaks,” grinned Griffeth, “Our tech-nicians are really clean, too. Some are very serious, always out there mopping the floors like crazy.” This means that someone wearing business attire can walk to the back of the shop to view their car and any issues, and not have to wipe off their shoes afterwards.

The ‘Cheers’ factor is working, gauged by those walking through the door that Tyson knows and recognizes, and those numbers are growing. He enjoys customers coming from Homedale and Middleton, because they bring a friendly, non-hustle/bustle, more laid-back feel to the place. Slower, he feels, is always bet-ter.

“You can make a fast buck, or you can win a customer for life. We’re going for the friends for life.”

Most people know the Meineke name. Meineke in caldwell is making sure that they know their customers’ names.

J ames Fullinwider is a positive force in his community. As the owner of All American Insurance he strives to help make the city of Meridian a better place to live. A board member

with the Meridian Chamber of Commerce and an advocate for creating lasting relationships with his customers, James believes that “the best life is one that is driven by compassion and kindness toward others.”

All American Insurance is a Meridian based company backed by 40 years of experience. An independent agency, they have the ability to pick and choose policies from many different insurance companies. For this reason, James and his team can formulate an insurance plan that perfectly suits their clients’ needs. James and his team take this responsibility very seriously, and want their policies to pro-tect their clients should the worst occur. “Insurance agents are the people that help fix things when they go wrong, and we take that very seriously.”

Due to the fact that your insurance agency will be the entity that assists you in times of great need, James and his team believe in building a strong relationship with their clients. In the event that your family suf-fers a catastrophe, the agent you speak to at All American Insurance will be someone

that you know and feel comfortable with. “Building and maintaining relationships with our clients is a priority for All American Insur-ance, we often choose to focus on that rather than selling new policies.” This personal connection they strive to achieve with their customers is what sets All American Insurance apart from the competition.

In addition to building lasting relationships with their clients, All American Insurance consists of a team passionate about better-ing their community. The employees regularly donate their time to local charities, while the company often volunteers time and

funds to benefit Meridian. James is in-spired by those that lead a life of service to others and feels that his role in the Me-ridian Chamber of Commerce allows him to serve his community. “The Meridian Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to serving the community. It allows those of us in business to make community service an intricate part of our lives. It enhances the quality of life for the community.”

All American Insurance has flourished over the last 40 years, and with standards and beliefs centered in the community, it will continue to do so into the future.

Have you ever considered how powerful your thoughts are? napaoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, says “Thoughts are things”. James Allen, author of As A Man Thinketh, says “Right think-ing begins with the words we say to ourselves.”

Every day, thoughts pop in and out of our minds. We have random thoughts, positive thoughts and negative thoughts. Sadly those negative thoughts can easily become habitual. They make us worry more, get angry, become impatient or afraid. Left unchecked, those negative thoughts become limiting beliefs and create stress in our lives. Then those limiting beliefs begin to reflect our reality because what we predominately think about, we attract…. good or bad.

We can't always choose our thoughts, but we can control those negative ones by changing them immediately! Using a beautifully simple technique called Tapping, or EFT you can circumvent the negative talk and quickly change the negative to positive.

And what you ask is Tap-ping? Tapping or EFT (its the same technique, just referred to by a different name) is a form of psychological acupressure that uses a gentle tapping technique, instead of needles, to stimulate traditional Chinese acupuncture points. You tap with the fingers on specific points on the face and upper body and combine the tapping with talking about an identified problem. Combining the tapping and talking balances the bodies energy system and releases trapped emotions, which have been stored in the energy system. Restoring the balance of the energy system allows the body and mind to resume their natural healing abilities.

It is such a gentle and easy process that it makes it hard to believe that it actually works. But it does work and with great success!! People are using EFT to eliminate fears, phobias, weight loss, limiting beliefs, relationship blocks, physical pain, anxiety, grief, stress, PTSD, anger and a whole bunch of other challenges. I have personally coached clients in all of those areas and more. It is the most amaz-ing thing I have ever seen! The physical pain is gone, the beliefs that have kept them stuck are neutralized and they feel lighter, positive, peaceful and calm.

Don’t let your child near the infamous Pit Bull! The lies associated with this breed are everywhere but the chance to change this misconception is now. The Pit Bull, a dog born no different than any other breed yet holds the connotation of violence and destruction, while we all ignore the monster at the other end of the leash.

Left alone, outside, dumped at the Canyon County Animal Shelter, Ethel waits for an end-ing to a life she was never able to live. Blinded from any form of kindness, she’s unable to escape the darkness in her life. Only meant to breed, she lays hanging by a thread. Left to suffer due to the actions of her breeder--who faces no legal consequence for his indecent actions. Luckily for Ethel, unlike the millions of other Pit Bulls who have died in the face of inhumanity, she receives to chance die in peace. Taken into a home for the first time in her relatively long nine years of life, Ethel has never experienced security before. Blindly hitting walls and tables, she’s in a foreign terri-tory. While the blindness resigns, the darkness is lifted from Ethel in the form of leash--her symbol of hope; the leash which is used to link Ethel and Max, a previously rescued Pit bull who shows Ethel the light.

Acting as the eyes for another, Max was brought to the shelter on a tow truck chain and narrowly escaped a brief and cruel life.

His demeanor is gentle and kind as he leads Ethel through the house. Able to feel the pain she has experienced, Max takes the lead--giv-ing Ethel another layer of protection from her shattered life. Experiencing compassion for the first time, Ethel attempts to regain trust in the hu-man race; A race that has cruelly manipulated a breed for their own entertainment and enjoy-ment. Ethel never fighting herself was forced to give birth to more fighting dogs due to the high value associated with puppies. She has never learned to wag her tail or felt affection, until Wendy Adamson, Pit Bull activist and “the voice for those who cannot speak themselves” brought her into her loving home. Ethel was laid to rest in peace three weeks later in the arms of the Adamson family--a moment that will forever touch hearts of this family and the hearts of those who hear their story.

Bully Breed Dogs are subject to a life of extreme cruelty and are used as fighting dogs right here in the Treasure valley. Dog fighting is taking place on a local, state, and national level with nothing being done until after the fights are over. If you are moved by the story you have read, I urge you to educate yourself, children, and other adults about the misconceptions linked to Pit Bulls. These are kind, loyal, and loving dogs that are not born evil and have no say in the life they are forced to live. If you’re interested in rescuing--Boise Bully Breed Rescue

has dogs that have already been living with foster families. These families can tell you every-thing you need to know about the dog’s living preferences before you take him/her home. This rescue helps save all bully breeds. The term "bully" can invoke a sense of terror and intimi-dation, so it's no wonder many people believe these breeds pose a danger to society.

However, the term actually has nothing to do with the dogs' temperament or behavior, and everything to do with their origin and history. One often overlooked fact is that any dog may attack if it's neglected, abused or trained to be aggressive. Bully breeds are normally gentle dogs when they're cared for properly. Believe it or not, bully breeds are very good with children, too. There's no doubt bully breeds have been given a bad name, but many animal lovers are dedicated to restoring their image and proving they deserve to be among America's favorite dogs again. If you are interested in learning more, contact the Boise Bully Breed Rescue. In addition, you can donate your time and/or pet supplies to the Ada or Canyon County Animal Shelters, A Mind’s Eye Tattoo or Frenchies board-ing and Grooming. These are also donation sites for things like leashes, collars, and food.

Raising Awareness:

Page 45: Urban Liaison Spring Issue

Every day holds challenges for each of us. Wife, mother, daughter and friend. Many more roles we can add to this list. We are busy and multifaceted. We juggle it all, hopefully with a sense of grace, style and a little bit of moxie. There are times when we are standing in line at the grocery store or watch-ing a commercial on television that we compare what we see with who we are. Walking into a party with a room full of people, most of us mentally take note of who is there and how they are dressed.

I have done this for years myself. It is tiring, exhausting and toxic on ones self esteem. Women are givers, nurturers and care takers. It is natural we want to please those in our life. My question to you is do you nurture and please yourself? When you look in the mirror do you see what makes you beautiful and unique? Do you understand that there is only one you in this world? It is so easy to get caught up in the stars and celebrity, their body sizes and what they have and wear. To constantly compare ourselves with another always leaves us wanting more. By doing this we never fully appreciate who we are and what we have in our lives. How can we give, love and live fully if we don’t see it when we look in the mir-ror? 2013 is the year, the time to challenge yourself. Chal-lenge yourself to think differ-ently, really see who you are. What is beautiful about you? What sets you apart? If you are having a hard time with this there are 2 things you can do to get the ball rolling. First is ask a few objective and close people that you trust what they see in you, then you can return the favor. If approach-ing someone else to do this makes you nervous, then find a quiet spot, get centered and ask yourself, “What is special and beautiful about me?” “What do I have to offer this world?” Then let it go. The answer will come. Because I know we have everything we need within us, if we trust and listen. Then pick up the mirror and say “I am beautiful, I am enough, I am me.

The salon was designed to have a clean, contemporary feel with its white walls and furniture, giant picture win-dows to let the natural light in, and fresh flowers always. Azure also has several art pieces throughout the salon from a few different local artists, like the beautiful front desk that was created by Sue Latta, the owner of The Sculpture Studio. The movable display shelves and our awesome robotic-like scissor hand sculpture was created by August Johnson, along with several mixed media can-vases by Tod Alan, one of Azure’s hair artists. You should get a fun, but calm feeling when you enter the building. It’s really like nothing in Boise. The objective of Azure Hair Studio is to make you feel welcome and the goal and mission of the salon is for you to have “a hair experience.”

In the first year Azure Hair Studio won best Salon of the Treasure Valley from the Idaho Statesmen, competing with some salons that have been in business for up to 40

plus years. This was an exciting achievement in just our first year, letting the Azure family know what was yet to come, success!

Azure isn’t like any other salon, because the salon has hosted and been a part of several events, including two fashion shows. The first show was put on by hair artist, Tod Alan, called Vogue 11-11-11 an avant-garde fash-ion show with over 25 models, three photographers, VIP seating, and limo service to downtown after the show. The second show was last summer that Azure hosted called The Man Show, put on by Tod Alan and Master Barber/Stylist Tim Carey with assistants by all the stylists at Azure and was photographed by Ayres Creative with only male models that came from as far away as Seattle. It was completely different from most local fashion shows and very exciting, especially for the women.

In the Linen District, located just on the outskirts of downtown Boise in one of the few locations that offers free parking at 1519 W. Grove St., you will find a salon named Azure Hair Studio, LLC. Azure Hair Studio has been in business for two years in July. Not lacking in experience though, with some of the

best stylists Boise has to offer, there is over 130 years combined experience in the hair industry.

hair and makeup for the ballerinas. Azure gives gift certificates to many nonprofit programs like Second Chance Gala and Silent Auction, as well donating to Axiom’s fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Some of Azures stylists donated time for the first boise Fashion Week created by Rob Ayres in the sum-mer of 2012 doing hair, makeup and modeling. Tod Alan showed his avant-garde style. There will also be a Boise Fashion Week 2013 planned for July. He has done over 20 fash-ion shows of his own and is cur-rently working on a photo shoot that shows his creativity in the hair world. The owner Desiree’ Warrell had her first collection of designs; they were repurposed fabrics and other ma-terials such as a parachute, curtain, and a table cloth.

Azure will always be involved in creating lots of avenues to meet many new people like hosting an up-and-coming event for Lone Wolf, a Vineyard that will be introducing

their wines to the Boise Market, Botox parties with Dr. McGrae from Power Smiles Dental Office. Azure hosts Client Appreciation parties, Christ-mas parties and has even had an 80’s party. The biggest event yet, the first HAIR bATTLE involving any-one licensed in Idaho that thinks they are on top of their game in the hair industry. The categories for the HAIR bATTLE will include men’s clas-sics, women’s classics, avant-garde, editorial, collection, fashion forward, and hair color. The current judges so far are Taylor jameson and Gregory Hinshaw. Taylor Jameson owns her own trendy hair salon in Cincinnati, Ohio and teaches Rock the Razor cutting classes across the United States. Gregory Hinshaw was a world-renowned platform hair artist and now resides in Sun Valley working on the Hair of the Elite. In the weeks to come we will be announcing more judges on the HAIR bATTLE website, which is in the process of being made. Look for it in July 2013.

Azure has hosted several photo shoots done by Rob Ayres of Ayres Creative and Boise Model Man-agement with many local models, business owners, and Miss Idaho 2012, Erna Palic’. Also Framed, a photography group, filmed an episode of their Youtube show with guest film photographer, jan Scholz from Brussels, in the salon. It was an amazing experience for everyone that was involved. There were sev-eral other photographers that came to Azure just to watch him shoot photos. Azure and Rob Ayres, who is also a makeup artist, helped in the makeover with Tanya Stylespygirl, a personal shopper and stylist, in do-ing her web makeover series called Every Woman Project, a nonprofit program to makeover women with donations from local businesses including Nordstrom Rack, Sephora, and Azure.

Nothing screams spring more than vibrant, captivating color! With so many different spring trends--I’m focusing on color as a way to express your individuality this sea-son. This spring, two colors stand out above the rest. Though these colors may be similar to Boise State University’s colors, I’m not suggesting you wear them together. This season it’s all about Oranges and Blues and how to find the right shade for you.

Brilliant, bright, bold, and it’s everywhere right now! From tangerine to dark burnt orange -- no matter the hue orange is hot for spring. Featured on the Victoria Beckham, Carolina Herrera, Alice + Olivia and Peter Som runways, you can’t go wrong with orange. Whether you’re rocking orange skinny jeans with a neu-tral top, an orange skirt, dress, or even just a bold orange shoe--you will look chic this spring. One of the easiest ways to wear orange is with a crisp, clean white shirt which will leave you rocking a perfectly on-trend ensemble. If you would rather break into the orange sphere though accessories, try picking up a pair of bold sunglasses, flat shoes, or even a “baseball” style hat! Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. This spring, let these bring power into your wardrobe and represent yourself as an individual by em-bracing this hue.

Having a case of the blues this spring isn’t nec-essarily a bad thing because the 2013 runways were covered with beautiful, brilliant, and bub-bly blue shades from designers like Alice + Olivia, Milly, Herve Leger, and Rebecca Taylor runways.

This enduring classic has returned in a bIG way. From navy to azure, to sky blue and cobalt, designers incorporated this prima-ry color into their looks and featured co-balt blue as a notable shade for wearable color-blocking. Because the vibrant tone pops beautifully against any skin tone, blue is incredibly easy to wear. Cobalt blue can be worn from head-to-toe as demon-strated on many runways, or as a featured accessory. Simply pair a cobalt handbag, scarf, or shoes with a black, white, navy, or cream ensemble to balance its vibrancy. Cobalt in particular represents freedom and independence, so embrace your own adaptation of the trend and experiment with beautiful blues to find a style that is uniquely individual!

Incorporate the hot colors of the season into your beauty rou-tine by picking up a few new items at Mae’s Avon boutique in nampa. The True Color Eyeshadow Quad features color combi-nations that complement either orange or blue. The Denim Blues Quad is perfect for accentuating a blue hue, while the Carib-bean Sunset Quad would pop against any shade of orange. For days when you want your lips to pop instead of your eyes, Avon’s Totally Kissable Lipstick will condition your lips with infused fruit en-zymes and a blend of natural oils. I would suggest the Caressing Coral shade to give your lips a pop of bold orange or the Lovely Dovey Pink shade to pair with a cobalt blue dress. And don’t for-get the icing on top to any outfit--your nails! Take advantage of this small space by dressing up your nails with Avon’s Nailwear Pro+ nail Enamel in Lagoon, Cosmic blue, Coal beat, Tangtastic, or Lucky Penny.

Whether you’re attracted to the vibrancy and power of orange or the freedom and imagination sparked by blue--let the clothes you choose be in a hue that speaks to you. Color is powerful, per-sonal, and perfect for finding which spring trend to incorporate into your wardrobe this season. Yo

Yes, the rumors are true. boise has a new farmers Market. Well, sort of.

The New Market’s board members have over 250 years of combined Market and Ag related experience within the group. To quote one board member, who was also one of the founding members of the Capital City Farmers Market, “We are stepping in to this project with eighteen years of knowledge and we understand that it takes time to make a strong agriculturally based market.” The market may have a new name, but some of the most progressive thinkers in the Ag arena will be part of The Boise Farmers Market. In addition to the already impres-sive years of market member experience, the Boise Farmers Market has hired Karen Ellis to help develop and manage the new market. The board felt that Ellis, as the founder and long time manager of the Capital City Market, had the passion, qualification and dedication to help them bring the new market to life.

Everything at the boise Farmers Market will be grown local, produced local or have local ingredients in the product. In many farmers markets around the coun-try, the local movement is not so local. Many markets do not monitor the products that are being sold. This is top priority for the board members at the Boise Market. Around forty plus vendors are signed up to participate in the opening day of the market, on April 6th, from 9a.m. till 1p.m. The location is just a couple of blocks away from The Capitol City Market on 1080 West Front Street. If you’re a regular at the markets in the valley, you will recognize many of the vendors who have switched over to this Ag-focused market.

Education is another important topic with the founding board members. Many of the board members feel that mentoring new farmers will be much easier with a smaller market. Educating our customers on the importance of a strong agricultural climate is another top priority. The market is dedicated to promoting a sustainable food system to our community by offering a diverse mix of agricultural products at the market. This in turn encour-ages the renewal of our local agricultural economy. The market is more than merely a place to exchange goods; it is a catalyst for incubating new farmers, new ideas and a sustainable community!

The Vision and Mission of our Market.

The Boise Farmers Market is a community marketplace where local food and agricultural products are available year-round and where the community can learn about and become engaged in food system issues. The market is a catalyst and incubator for local food related activities in the region, and helps to build personal and community self-reliance. The Boise Farmers Market supports a regener-ative, healthy food and agricultural system by operating a vibrant marketplace featuring locally grown and crafted products. Your dollars will go farther and actually support the community which we all live in---when you purchase your local goods from the Boise Farmers Market.

Is it country, folk, or is it pop? I'm not sure you can fit this emerging singer/songwriter from boise, Idaho into a specific genre. Desirae bronson's music brings a simple style that is new and fresh. With melodies that easily weave their way into your mind, and upbeat lyrics that convey life in a way everyone can relate to. Desirae started singing and writing only a few years ago but she has made up for lost time writing and releas-ing three albums in the past three years. Her recently released album, This Is Me radiates the quality of her creativity in every song reaching audiences of all ages. With vocal style that would bring to mind artists like Sheryl Crow and natasha bedingfield mixed with a banjo and a slide guitar, this album will keep your ears tuned in to hear what is next. She has shared the stage with Thomp-son Square, Blue County and Steve Azar and has played in concert house venues and festivals all over the Trea-sure Valley. 2012 was a big year for Desirae winning RAW Artist Boise's "Musician of the Year" as well as winning Na-tional Country Radio Talent contest. Her song "This Is Me" has gained radio play in Nashville and she is set to travel there in March to start recording a new single with an award-winning producer at Ocean Way Studio.

Pause for THe cause are three of my favorite people, and one of the greatest bands I've ever heard!Imagine this: You're sitting on a bar stool sipping a beer. Suddenly, a band starts up and you think, "Nice! I can't wait until they play Sweet Home Alabama!” But, they never do! "That's okay,” you think, "Freebird will be just as good!" But, they don't play that one either!Instead, you're forced to drink your beers while listening to three dudes jamming killer original reggae, rock and hip-hop music. "Ugh!" The band even had the nerve to play cover songs you already knew, but sounding completely modern and different! "Blasphemy!” you yell. But secretly, you like it.One hour and three beers later, you've somehow been brain-washed into moving your body around the dance floor. It's strangely appealing.

wRITTEN By chris holtonI have been covering local music in the Urban Liaison Magazine for 2 years now and it has been amazing! I

owe a great deal of thanks to the publisher of the UL, Cheryl Richard! It is an honor to bring our talented local musicians more publicity. My goal is to inform

everybody that we don’t have to spend a lot of money on traveling performers that will take our money and run.

We all need to help our friends and neighbors, like the bands I highlight in each issue.

Also, please take the time to find and like the band I manage: Grindsole on Facebook. www.facebook.com/

Next thing you know, it's two in the morning. The show is over. You're standing outside the club talk-ing with the band. "Great job guys! That was fun!” you say. "Thanks man! You want to help us out?” asks the drummer. "Sure!” you reply. "We're sup-posed to write an article for a magazine," the drummer continues, "but we don't know what to say. Want to write it for us?"For some strange reason, you agree. And you end the article by saying:"If you love bar bands that play the same old rusty cover songs that sound exactly the same as they did decades ago, you're going to HATE Pause for the Cause!"Make your own opinion every Thursday night at Tom Graineys (10:00PM)!

Buy Local, Live Local and Eat Local. yes, Eat Local. We all have choices each and every time we decide to dine out. Many local restaurants in our area are locally owned and operated. Some local restaurant owners go out of their way to support local food produc-ers in our area, they strive to use local products each and every day. Which in turn, keeps our local food producers, farmers and ranchers in business. It’s a local “Circle” . Please enjoy reading our reviews about the Urban Liaison “Locally Owned” Restaurants, some of the best places to eat in our valley. And the next time you decide to eat out, do your research and try out a locally owned and operated establishment. urban

café de coco Anyone wanting to share a memory with someone they care about needs to visit the ever-charming Café de Coco. Operated in a nostalgic downtown nampa building, with their captivating gift shop, whimsically mismatched tables and chairs, you can’t help but fall in love with the place. It’s the perfect intimate venue in which to catch up with friends, or for that special parent-child lunch. Sit back, let out a long sigh and relax to the soft music as you’re absolutely spoiled by Café de Coco’s warm, attentive staff.

Café de Coco’s Turkey Focaccia has been called ‘the best sandwich in the world’. Their savory home-made quiche creates cravings you can do nothing about, other than to answer the call. There are delicious soups, salads and sandwiches to choose from; and choosing is often a tough choice. Not to worry, you can return again and again for a chance to try something else that’s tempted you. Skip dessert? Not on your life: Mouth-watering cinnamon rolls, chocolate cherry fudge cake, huckleberry scones with Devonshire cream and lemon curd, cheesecake topped with strawber-ries, and multiple flavors of creamy gelato are all the rage of Café de Coco’s happy patrons. On your way out, peruse the gift shop for jewelry, a scarf, or a keepsake to take home as a souvenir of the time you’ve spent with friends or family.

Honey Baked Ham and caféGiving a whole new meaning to ‘b&b’, Honey baked Ham and Café has scrumptious sandwiches, chips, potato salad, coleslaw and cookies all in one ‘hammy’ box lunch, but don’t forget the other ‘b’, be-cause they have the bottles, too, bringing the Treasure Valley a mouth-watering selection of spirits from all over the globe to satisfy even the pickiest of palates. Small batch Pinot Noir from Williamette Valley to authentic old-world bavarian Hefeweissen, you’re sure to pick up something you love. Enjoy house wines by the glass, or browse the selection of over 100 beers to mix and match your own custom six pack! Enjoy brownstone Pinot Grigio with its aromas of ripe peach, pear, lychee and honeysuckle, blended with a hint of vanilla and toasted oak. The creamy texture and bright, fruity flavor and aroma pair excellently with grilled chicken or roasted halibut. Don’t forget to stop by their wine tastings on first and third Wednesdays, too! island kine GrindsMissing the authentic Island food of Hawaii, Ludi and Renus Domingo bring the Aloha to Nampa with Island Kine Grinds’ Hawaiian comfort food and plate lunches. Korean, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, they have it all. Ludi is Queen of Cuisine and Renus is the host with the most, making you feel like IKG is your second home. Since ‘grinds’ means roughly ‘get your grub on’, that’s what you’ll do, and you’ll be so glad you did. now IKG is giving us even more reasons to love the Aloha, since they’re offering catering and party packs for the holidays. They’ve also added Shoyu Chicken to their menu, answering the many requests from Polynesian friends in Idaho. That’s not all…They’ll rent out IKG for your next party or family gathering. And the absolute kicker? Check out their new Aloha Friday Buffet, giving us one more great reason to live it up on Fridays. If you haven’t been to Island Kine Grinds, you’ve missed the boat!
