WHOLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY Last week’s whole school assembly saw another group of great readers awarded their 1000 and 2000 minute reading certificates. We have so many keen readers. Keep up the good work! Mrs Martyn also had the privilege of announcing the top fundraisers from the Colour Run our P&C organised earlier this term. More information on who were the top fundraisers is further on in the newsletter. It was certainly a great job from everyone involved. 1/2 Yellow then strutted their stuff on stage. They had all their ‘gansta’ gear on including some gold chains, sunnies, hats turned backwards, and performed a very cool dance to Beat Go Pop. They really had their moves down pat and gave us a very entertaining performance. Mrs Thorn is always looking for silly and fun songs to teach everyone for school singing and last Thursday she did exactly that! She taught everyone a song called “Sing a silly song”. NEWS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL MRS JANE MARTYN

WHOOPING COUGH - PERTUSSIS A note was sent home last Friday confirming that a case of whooping cough (Pertussis) has been reported at our school. For more information, follow these links: http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Factsheets/pertussis.pdf http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/whoopingcough/Pages/default.aspx

ONLINE CYBER SAFETY It is important that children are supervised when engaging in online gaming, chats and social media. It is becoming alarmingly common for young children to be allowed to be online at home and unsupervised. This is a practice that is potentially dangerous and concerning. Please supervise your young people if you are allowing them to chat online. I have included an article that outlines some useful tips for parents to protect our children who are engaging in online gaming, chatting or social media at home. At school, we teach online cyber safety and anti-bullying lessons regularly. Please read the following article and useful resources: ARE YOU THINKING OF BUYING YOUR CHILD A SMART TOY, SMART PHONE, TABLET, E-SITE MEMBERSHIP OR SOMETHING SIMILAR? Children and teenagers are going online and using social media with increasing frequency. While many enjoy their online experiences, there are risks involved. Parents, schools and the broader community need to work together to help keep children’s online experiences safe. The Commonwealth Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner has developed a resource for parents – iPARENT – which helps parents deal with the connected devices in their children’s lives. iPARENT – found at https://esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent - provides facts and statistics about Australian children online, managing technology in the home and strategies that can be used by parents to keep children safe online. A parent’s guide to online safety can be downloaded from this site. A range of other useful information is also available from the website. For example parents can access information about cyberbullying including: how to talk to their child about cyberbullying; what to do if their child is being cyber bullied or is engaging in cyberbullying behaviour themselves; and sources of professional support and help. The website also provides information about how parents and children can report unwanted online contact and/or inappropriate, offensive or illegal content online. If you are thinking of buying smart toys, smart phones, tablets, drones, e-gift cards or membership in an e-gaming site, you may like to check out the e-Safety Commissioner’s eSafety Christmas Gift Guide at - https://www.esafety.gov.au/giftguide - so you can be savvy and secure when you pick out tech gifts. Finally, if someone you know is adversely affected by an online experience, free and confidential advice, assistance and support is available from: the Kids Helpline (ages 5 to 25) on 1800 55 1800; and/or eheadspace (ages 12 to 25) on 1800 650 890; and/or Lifeline on 13 11 14. COLOUR RUN FUNDRAISERS There were many students that raised a fabulous amount of money for the Colour Run, but it was Sophia from K Red who raised the most! She received a certificate, a canteen voucher and a medal!! Congratulations Sophia. It was a tight tussle for the top fundraising class, but the class that came out on top and raised the most money overall was 3/4 Blue. They also received a certificate and will enjoy a yummy icy pole treat next week. Prizes that had been ordered were also handed out on Friday to a lot of very excited fundraisers. It was a great event and we appreciate all the efforts put in by our amazing P&C team and their helpers.

COMBINED SCRIPTURE PERFORMANCE A combined performance by the Christian Community High School organised by all the Scripture teachers will be held this Thursday morning from 10:15 am. This is the last Scripture session for the year and is becoming part of a tradition. All students are invited to attend the performance. If you do not wish for your child to attend please inform the class teacher via a signed note from you, otherwise they will be going with the rest of the school. Several teachers will be supervising non-attenders during this time.

Children under 16 are now legally allowed to ride on footpaths in NSW.

Law change gives green light for teenagers to ride on footpaths. As students return from the winter holidays, many teenagers will no longer have to navigate traffic on busy roads while riding their bikes to school. Children aged up to 16-years-old are now legally allowed to ride on footpaths.   This change is also a great opportunity to discuss the rights and responsibilities of riding on the foot-path, consideration for others and the dangers of driveways. www.smh.com.au/politics/nsw/law-change-gives-green-light-for-teenagers-to-ride-on-footpaths-20180720-p4zsl2.html
