    no start-Up Costs

    The cost o starting and maintaining a dental practice can be

    substantial. I you are a recent graduate with student loan

    obligations, this cost can be prohibitive.

    As an Army Dentist, you can enter a stimulating existing practice

    with no start-up costs, and begin treating patients without waiting

    to build a patient base.

    an oFFiCer

    Regardless o your dental experience, you will enter with the

    rank o at least Captain. You will work with a diverse patient

    population, and perorm a variety o dental procedures in a clinicsetting, and possibly in a feld environment.

    In addition, you will enjoy all the prestige and privilege o being an

    ofcer in the U.S. Army. This includes being a respected member

    o your community and having access to a wide variety o travel

    opportunities and recreational acilities.

    As a member o the Army Dental Corps, you will be surrounded by

    highly skilled proessionals, some o whom are leading authorities

    in their felds. You will beneft rom the combined

    knowledge o these dental teams. The Army also trains enlisted

    dental assistants and hires a number o trained civilians,

    maximizing the team concept.

    The Army maintains modern dental acilities around the world, in

    countries as diverse as Belgium, Germany, Italy, Japan and Korea.

    It aords you the kind o travel opportunities no civilian practice

    can match.

    FinanCing yoUr Dental eDUCation

    health proFessions sCholarship program

    I you are currently a student at an accredited dental school, or

    are applying to or have been accepted by an accredited dentalschool, the F. Edward Hbert Armed Forces Health Proessions

    Scholarship Program (HPSP) oers you a unique opportunity or

    fnancial support. This program permits selected students to be

    commissioned as ofcers in the Army Reserve.

    While completing school, you receive a monthly stipend o

    $1,992 or 10+ months each year. For the remaining 1+ months,

    you will be on active duty or training, and will receive the pay

    and allowances o a Second Lieutenant. This training program

    is usually perormed at an Army health care acility. I your

    academic program does not allow time away rom school,

    arrangements may be made to allow you to continue your studies

    while perorming your active duty or training at school, and still

    be paid your active duty pay. Tuition and certain other expenses

    will also be paid by the government. Qualiying dental students

    are also eligible to receive a $20,000 sign-on bonus.

    To be eligible or this program, you must be a citizen o the

    United States, be enrolled in an accredited dental school in the

    U.S. or Puerto Rico, and meet the prescribed eligibility criteria

    or appointment as a commissioned ofcer.

    aCCession BonUs For Dental Corps oFFiCers

    Dentists who did not receive an HPSP scholarship may receive

    a $75,000 accession bonus or joining the active Army. I you

    qualiy, you will receive a lump sum payment upon assignment

    to your frst permanent duty station ater completion o Ofcer

    Basic Leaders Course.

    health proFessions loan repayment program

    This program provides up to a maximum o three years orepayment o qualifed education loans. Payment is made in

    increments o approximately $40,000 annually or each year

    o participation. Active duty obligation is three years.

    aDVanCeD eDUCation in general Dentistry

    12-month program

    I you are a dental student in your senior year, you are no doubt

    considering specialized training or are looking or a means o

    better preparing or a general practice. Maybe you are a recent

    dental school graduate looking or additional specialty training

    and clinical experience.

    Each year The Surgeon General o the United States Army oers

    an opportunity to recently graduated dental students to seekproessional advancement through the Advanced Education

    in General Dentistry 12-month program (AEGD 12-month). This

    one-year program oers selected graduates opportunities or

    diverse clinical experiences and advanced training at the graduate

    level. In one short year, youll gain considerable experience in the

    ollowing major areas o dentistry:

    practice ideal dentistry and assume increasing responsibility

    or total patient care. You will work with a teaching sta

    o highly qualifed and experienced Army Dental Corps

    ofcers. The Army is committed to giving you the best training

    possible in state-o-the-art acilities. Participants in the AEGD12-Month normally begin their Army careers with the rank o

    Captain and receive all the benefts associated with that rank.

    I selected or this program, you will train at prestigious Army

    dental acilities at one o these locations: Fort Lewis, Wash.; Fort

    Campbell, Ky.; Fort Carson, Colo.; Fort Benning, Ga.; Fort Jackson,

    S.C.; or Fort Sill, Okla.

    The Army Dental Corps emphasizes dentistry as a complete

    health care system. Nearly all dentists who make the Army acareer receive specialty training. Thats why we pioneered an

    Advanced Education in General Dentistry 24-month program

    (Comprehensive Dentistry). We also oer experienced dental

    ofcers specialty residences in:

    Endodontics

    Periodontics

    Prosthodontics

    OralandMaxillofacialSurgery

    PublicHealth

    Pedodontics

    Orthodontics

    OralPathology

    The Army Specialty Residency Programs are second to none.

    All are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation

    o the American Dental Association and meet the requirements

    o the Dental Specialty Boards. The Chie o Service in each o

    our residency programs is certifed by the appropriate Specialty

    Board, with all program associates either board-certifed or

    board-eligible.

    consultants who have important roles in every program. In

    I you are qualifed, you can get your training in certain specialties

    at some o the best civilian institutions in the country. These

    specialties currently include Oral Pathology, Public Health

    Dentistry, Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry.

    The Army Dental Corps also oers qualifed Dental Corps ofcers

    opportunities to attend ellowship programs, such as Hospital

    Dentistry, Dental Materials and Maxilloacial Prosthodontics.

    speCial pay

    Those who qualiy will receive extra pay incentives as an active

    duty Dental Corps ofcer:

    VariableSpecialPaypaidmonthlyandbasedonyearsof

    creditable service, with annual rates ranging between $3,000

    and $12,000.

    BoardCerticationPaypaidmonthlyandbasedonyears

    o creditable service or Dental Corps ofcers who are

    board-certifed, with annual rates ranging between $2,500

    and $6,000.

    AdditionalSpecialPayforDentalCorpsofcerswhoaccept

    a one-year extension to their current military obligation and

    have served on active duty a minimum o three years. Annual

    rates range between $10,000 and $15,000.

    DentalOfcerMultiyearRetentionBonusbasedonspecialty

    and length o contract. Annual rates range between $13,000

    and $50,000.

    Keeping yoUr eDge

    ContinUing Dental eDUCation

    In dentistry today, sharpening your skills and keeping abreast o

    the latest techniques is imperative. Thats why all Army Dental

    Corps ofcers are encouraged to attend at least one proessional

    dental meeting each year, at government expense.

    Along with the opportunity to update their knowledge at national

    meetings, ofcers are continually exposed to ongoing proessional

    education. Guest speakers, proessional study clubs, and

    individual specialty clinical rotations are organized to provide at

    least 30 hours o continuing education each year.

    When youre ready to take your board certifcation examination,

    the Army will pay your expenses, so fnances will not stand in the

    way o your proessional advancement.

    The Army Dental Corps oers you a wealth o benefts and
