US Rivers

UK Rivers

The United States of America has over 250,000 rivers, with a total of about 3,500,000 miles of rivers. The longest river in the USA is the Missouri River (it is a tributary of the Mississippi River and is 2,540 miles long), but the biggest in terms of water volume is the deeper Mississippi River. The longest undammed river in the contiguous USA is the Yellowstone River (it is 692 miles long).Rivers provide drinking water, irrigation water, transportation, electrical power, drainage, food, and recreation. Rivers also erode land and carry it downstream to the sea. This kind of erosion can even form canyons, like the Grand Canyon, and waterfalls, like Niagara Falls.

Climate

USA:Due to its large size and wide range of geographic features, the United States contains examples of nearly every global climate. The climate is temperate in most areas, subtropical in theDeep South, tropical in Hawaii and southernFlorida, polar in Alaska, semiarid in the Great Plains west of the100th meridian, Mediterranean in coastalCaliforniaand arid in theGreat Basin. Its comparatively favorable agricultural climate contributed (in part) to the country's rise as a world power, with infrequent severe drought in the major agricultural regions, a general lack of widespread flooding, and a mainly temperate climate that receives adequate precipitation. The main influence on U.S. weather is thepolar jet stream, which brings in large low pressure systems from the northernPacific Ocean. TheCascade Range,Sierra Nevada, andRocky Mountainspick up most of the moisture from these systems as they move eastward. Greatly diminished by the time they reach the High Plains, much of the moisture has been sapped by theorographic effectas it is forced over several mountain ranges.Once it moves over the Great Plains, uninterrupted flat land allows it to reorganize and can lead to major clashes of air masses. In addition, moisture from theGulf of Mexicois often drawn northward. When combined with a powerful jet stream, this can lead to violent thunderstorms, especially during spring and summer. Sometimes during late winter and spring these storms can combine with another low pressure system as they move up the East Coast and into theAtlantic Ocean, where they intensify rapidly. These storms are known asNor'eastersand often bring widespread, heavy snowfall to theMid-AtlanticandNew England. The uninterrupted flat grasslands of the Great Plains also leads to some of the most extreme climate swings in the world. Temperatures can rise or drop rapidly and winds can be extreme, and the flow of heat waves or Arctic air masses often advance uninterrupted through the plains.

UK: The climate of the UK is generallytemperate, although significant local variation occurs, particularly as a result of altitude and distance from the coast. In general the south of the country is warmer than the north, and the west wetter than the east. Due to the warming influence of theGulf Stream, the UK is significantly warmer than some other locations at similar latitude, such asNewfoundland. The prevailing winds are southwesterly, from theNorth Atlantic Current. More than 50% of the days are overcast.[citation needed]There are few natural hazards, although there can be strong winds and floods, especially in winter.Average annual rainfall varies from over 3,000mm (118.1in) in theScottish Highlandsdown to 553mm (21.8in) inCambridge. The county ofEssexis one of the driest in the UK, with an average annual rainfall of around 600mm (23.6in), although it typically rains on over 100 days per year. In some years rainfall in Essex can be below 450mm (17.7in), less than the average annual rainfall inJerusalemandBeirut. The highest temperature recorded in the UK was 38.5C (101.3F) atBrogdale, nearFaversham, in the county ofKent, on 10 August 2003. The lowest was 27.2C (17.0F) recorded atBraemarin theGrampian Mountains, Scotland, on 11 February 1895 and 10 January 1982 andAltnaharra, also in Scotland, on 30 December 1995.

Relief

USA: The Atlantic coast is mostly lowland and has a hilly area called Piedmont. The main cities like (New York City , Boston ,Washington D.C ,Philadelphia ) lie along the Atlantic coast and are called megalopolis. This megalopolis has a great economic and cultural importance. Main highlands areas:the Appalachian Mountains(From Canada to Alabama) about 500 million years old .Highest peak is Mt.Mitchell 6.684 feet accessible by car.The Pacific coast is predominated by highland. The Rocky Mountains extend from Alaska to Mexico. The highest peak is Mt.Elbert in Colorado at 14.431 feet.(about 20 million years old). The Sierra Nevada extend from Fredonyer Pass to tehachapi Pass ,the highest peak is Mount Whitney. Another mountains from the Pacific coast are : the Cascade Range, the zcoast Ranges and the Alaska Range. Another highlands are the Intermountain Basis and Plateaus and Pacific Mountains and Valleys. The Interior LowlandsHere are grassy hills, forests and rolling flatlands like the Great Plains known as Prairies. This area is covered in prairie ,steppe and grassland. In the north lie the Canadian Shield called Laurentian Plateau covered by thin layer of soil.

UK:England is gently predominated by hills. The Pennines Mountains which runs in north to south direction making up the spine of the country the highes peak is Scafell Pike at 978m.The lowest point of UK is the Fens,in the east of England. The southern coastline consist of cliffs like Cornwall and Dover .In Wales dominate highlands. The Cambrian Mountains. The country highest peak ,Mount Snowdon. This region is known for waterfalls and beautiful caves.Scotland consist primarily of mountains and valleys filled. In north are the Grampian Mountains with peak Bean Nevis. The Caimgorns are sub-range of the Grampian Mountains .Northern Ireland consists of uplands and valleys. The main mountains are :the Sperrin Mountains, the Mourne Mountains and Antrim Mountains.
