Integrated Drive Systems enable greater efficiency, uptime and profitability

While improving energy efficiency one component at a time may deliver some positive results, truly significant improvements are usually achieved only by optimizing the entire drive system based on the application’s needs. Integrated Drive Systems combine products, application engineering and services into one, unique solutions-based approach that may reduce energy costs 20% or more.

Siemens simplifies the entire process, from product design to production planning, production engineering, production operations and services throughout the entire lifecycle. We help companies avoid costly over-engineering, while ensuring their systems meet all unique specification requirements. From gears and motors to couplings and drives, our end-to-end perspective produces custom components that work together right from the start.

With one supplier to contact, you’ll experience fewer communication challenges throughout the drive train’s lifecycle — and with one company responsible for original component design and manufacturing, future maintenance, upgrades and expansions can be implemented with ease.

It all translates into improved productivity, reliability and efficiency.

Energy-efficient variable speed drives SINAMICS drives for motion control applications

SINAMICS — the ideal choice for pump, fan and compressor applications

While electric motors represent over 70% of the total power demand in industry today, a vast majority do not use optimal motor speed control. Statistics show that pump, fan and compressor systems represent the single largest group of motor applications in industry — approximately 40%. The good news is that this offers almost every company the potential to tap into enormous energy savings by using variable speed drives (VSD) for motor speed control.

Flow control has traditionally relied upon mechanical devices such as valves, throttles, vanes and louvers. These mechanical control methods do not take into consideration the speed of the motor driving the system as it relates to the system output. As a result, motors operate at 100% speed, although 100% output is not required. However, by using VSDs in flow control applications, you can achieve up to 70% savings.

Wasted energy recovery (regenerative applications)

Sometimes it is easy to overlook the significant energy-savings opportunities in applications with frequent braking, slowing or cycling loads. These types of applications are typically referred to as regenerative, or regen, and range from downhill conveyors to engine test stands.

In regenerative applications, when a motor is used to slow down or hold back, maintain the speed, or cycle a load, the energy generated by the motor can be significant and must always be dissipated. Traditionally the dissipation of the excess energy has been managed back through the drive via special braking control (braking chopper) and then routed out to a large resistor where the energy is finally dissipated in the form of heat. In the electrical and mechanical industries, heat = waste. By using VSDs the excess, normally-wasted energy can be returned to your facility’s power grid for use elsewhere.

Did you know?Up to 80% savings can

be achieved, depending on the application.

Customers around the globe have been using DC drives from Siemens for decades. And for a good reason — many years of experience, extensive and specific expertise, and a continual development guarantee drive solutions with the highest degree of reliability reflecting state-of-the-art drive technology.

Energy sharing

Another method of saving energy using a regenerative configuration uses a common DC bus connection to intelligently share regenerated energy between motors. These types of configurations, typically involve multiple motors. At any given time, some of the motors consume energy (motoring) while others generate energy. The generated energy is returned back through the drive to a commonly shared connection, which allows other motors to consume the excess energy. The excess, returned energy is then consumed by the motors that are actually doing the work. The energy-savings potential is significant here as well — up to 80% again. Additionally, some components can be completely eliminated and component sizes and quantities can be reduced, which further lowers your costs.

Tools and drive functionalities to help you save even more energy

By properly configuring and operating SINAMICS drives using estimation tools like SIZER, SINASAVE and Startdrive, along with SINAMICS drive functions such as Hibernation mode and ECO Mode, and reactive power compensation provided as part of our SINAMICS S120 product line, you can achieve even more impressive energy savings.

Energy-efficient, low-voltage motorsSIMOTICS NEMA and IEC low-voltage motors

With a power range from 1–400 hp (NEMA), and 0.09 kW up to 1250 kW (IEC), our SIMOTICS NEMA and IEC low-voltage motors simply drive everything. We provide an ideal solution for each and every specific requirement — energy-efficient motors in compliance with current legislation and standards for a positive energy balance, even in many cases, local standards. Beyond that, we offer explosion-proof motors that fulfill the highest safety standards, as well as motors for specific, customized applications.

Motor efficiency — saving money to reduce operating costs

Siemens aluminum and cast iron frame motors have been developed to provide rugged performance, a long service life and exceptional operating efficiencies to reduce your company’s cost of ownership even further. Choosing motor efficiency wisely can produce significant savings — just 1% efficiency gain on a 20 hp motor can lead to substantial energy savings over the 20-year normal life of a motor. Multiply that by the number of motors in your facility, and it is easy to see how the overall operation cost is reduced.

Innovation that delivers results

If you are looking for the ultimate return on investment, rely on ground-breaking innovations that deliver what they promise. Industry-leading, die-cast copper rotor designs, through 20 hp, delivering efficiencies higher than NEMA Premium®, are also available from Siemens.

NEMA Premium® is a certification mark of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (US DOE CC# 032A).

A unique die-cast copper rotor design is one of the key elements that enable Siemens Ultra Efficient motors to exceed NEMA Premium® efficiency standard

Reduced heat

Excessive motor heating is one of the primary causes of poor operating efficiency and short service life. The advanced cooling system developed for our newest motors is based upon minimizing or preventing heat sources within the motor, and then quickly dissipating any remaining heat.

Maximized electrical performance

The advanced electromagnetic design of these motors optimizes energy within the motor for maximum efficiency. Innovations include:

n Air gaps that are specifically designed between the rotor and stator to minimize harmonic rotor and stator surface losses, along with harmonic losses in the stator.

n A unique die-cast copper rotor design used in Siemens NEMA Premium Ultra Efficient motors provides exceptional electrical performance.

Precisely manufactured

The advanced electrical designs and close tolerance manufacturing of Siemens motors ensures consistent maximum efficiencies. Proof of that is the NEMA Premium® logo, proudly displayed on both NEMA and IEC motors. A NEMA Premium licensee agrees to go beyond minimum U.S. Department of Energy testing requirements and deliver the efficiency stamped on the motor nameplate.
