    Springtime Savings

    Spring has definitely sprung across the country and retailers did their best to make it easier for their customers to enjoy the encroaching long days of summer. Grilling meat and the season's finest fruits and vegetables were widely featured. Mexican limes were once again being promoted in a sizeable way following the early spring shortage and high prices. Blueberries from the various growing districts throughout the Nation were showcased this week, along with stone fruit, grapes, and other types of berries. Watermelons, tomatoes, sweet yellow onions, chili peppers, and summer soft squash were among the other produce items featured this week. Locally grown produce is also becoming more widely available as growing regions across the country start to harvest produce.

    Total ad numbers this week were 351,774, a 4 % increase from last week's 339,380 ads. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 175,879 (which was 50% of all ads), onions and potatoes 32,669 (9%), vegetables 137,244 (39%), herbs 3,222, and ornamentals 2,760,

    The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week compared to the same week last year. Fruit items that increased in price included cherries at 34%, white seedless grapes at 24%, red seedless grapes at 21%, cantaloupes (ea) and yellow flesh peaches at 10%, Hass avocadoes and seedless watermelons (ea) both at 9%. Fruit that decreased in price included pineapples at 12%, apricots and yellow flesh nectarines both at 10%, and mangos at 8%. There were no significant increases or decreases in onions and potatoes this week. Vegetables that increased in price included red peppers (ea) at 32%, crown cut broccoli at 21%, and corn at 10%. Vegetables that decreased in price included cucumbers at 19%, on-the-vine tomatoes and Plum tomatoes both at 18%, and baby peeled carrots (1 lb) at 13%.
