USF St. PetersburgUSF St. Petersburg is located on the beautiful waterfront of downtown St. Petersburg, a world-famous destination featuring parks, shops, restaurants, art galleries, museums, and performing arts and sports venues. Established in 1965, this is USF’s oldest and largest regional institution, serving more than 4,600 undergraduate and graduate students. The waterfront on Bayboro Harbor makes campus life at USF St. Petersburg a truly Floridian experience with class offerings like scuba, sailing, swimming, fishing and kayaking.

USF Sarasota-Manatee

Established in 1975, USF Sarasota-Manatee (USFSM) is located on the border of Sarasota and Manatee counties, a vibrant locale featuring notable educational and cultural institutions, such as the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art. The campus offers 44 bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and certificate programs. Until 2012, USFSM was an upper-division transfer university offering undergraduate and graduate courses leading to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. USFSM admitted its first ever freshman class in 2013, signaling its transformation to a four-year university.

A Brief History of USF

Founded in 1956, the University of South Florida was the first independent state university conceived, planned and built in the 20th century. The University has made incredible strides since then, developing into one of the nation’s leading research institutions, but it didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it all started as most great ideas do – with a problem in need of a solution.

A Big Problem for the “Big 3”In 1954, before USF was ever a thought on paper, there were three state universities in Florida: the University of Florida, Florida State University and Florida A&M University. The “Big 3” were expected to serve the educational needs of all 36,000 students in the state, from Pensacola to Key West.

At the time, enrollment over the next 20 years was projected to rise 350 percent due to desegregation and returning veterans taking advantage of the G.I. Bill after World War II. This posed a sizeable problem for the state and it was a Hillsborough County legislator named Sam Gibbons who devised a solution. He was a WWII veteran and D-Day paratrooper, but also a recent law school graduate and young father. After consulting with colleagues, including close friend John Germany, Gibbons penned one of Tallahassee’s shortest pieces of legislation while sitting at his kitchen table one evening in 1955. This 80-word bill, signed into law later that year by then Governor LeRoy Collins, created a state university in Hillsborough County that would change Florida forever.

It’s All About LocationThe new university’s location was hotly debated and over the next two years, the options were narrowed to Tampa and St. Petersburg. When surveyors visited St. Petersburg in October 1956 to assess the proposed site, terrible flooding from a storm the night before made it look very unappealing. As a result, Gibbons ultimately secured the Tampa location. The site chosen was the Henderson Air Field, an auxiliary base on 46th Street that was used as a practice bombing range during WWII. From 1942-1946, bombardiers dropped sand-filled metal casings next to what is now the USF Library, Juniper-Poplar Hall and Campus Recreation. If not for an abandoned bombing range and a well-timed Florida storm, you might be visiting USF’s main campus in St. Petersburg.

The Birth of USF

With the location decided, the next step was choosing a name. Several ministers dubbed the school “Bottleneck U” due to the nearby brewery. Other suggestions were Citrus State University, University of the Western Hemisphere, Flamerica University and College of the Sunshine State. The University of South Florida was proposed by the Tampa Tribune because at the time, it was the southernmost public university in the state.A great university needs a great leader and USF found one in its first president, John S. Allen, who had been serving as the interim president of the University of Florida. Allen was an astronomer by trade and had a clear vision for an innovative university. Accompanied by his wife, Grace, USF’s first president went to work planning the University’s campus, programs and personnel on the 1,700 acres of donated scrub land. Then Governor of Florida, LeRoy Collins, presided over turbulent times and made some tough decisions. His reaction to the 1954 Brown v. the Board of Education decision mandating integration of public schools was among the most moderate in the South. For him, racial integration was simply “the Christian thing to do,” an attitude that helped make USF the first desegregated university in Florida.

A Taste of Student Life

in 1960USF first opened with only three buildings: The Administration Building (currently the John and Grace Allen Building), the Chemistry Building and the University Center (where the Marshall Student Center now stands). The Life Science Building and the Auditorium didn’t arrive until the next semester in spring 1961.Allen was a careful steward of the University’s limited financial resources and was opposed to spending money on athletics, Greek organizations or other aspects unrelated to academics. His philosophy was summed up in the slogan, “Accent on Learning.” Using his contacts in academia, Allen recruited a superior team of charter faculty eager to build a new institution from the ground up.In 1960, 98 percent of students were commuters. Before Alpha Hall was completed in 1961 as the first residence hall, USF’s inaugural residents were 45 women living on the fourth floor of the University Center. Alpha Hall was co-ed, but men and women were completely separated and visitation was prohibited. Students used a metal card slot and punch cards to clock in and out. Females were required to return to their rooms by 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends. Students needed written permission from a parent to spend the night anywhere other than the dorm. We’ve certainly come a long way since those rules, which began to phase out in 1967.

Birth of the BullEvery great university also needs a mascot and even without football, USF requested one in 1962. Among the proposed ideas were the fighting desert rats, the fighting desert camels and the sting rays. Students voted and the winning name was the Buccaneers, but a junior college with an identical mascot led to its disqualification. The Golden Brahma was the runner up. Unfortunately, it was later pointed out that a Brahma was a type of Asian chicken, not the intended reference to Florida’s flourishing cattle industry, so administrators quickly added an “n” to make it Golden Brahmans. The name stuck until the early 1980s when students officially changed it to the USF Bulls. Today, Rocky D. Bull is the beloved mascot of the University of South Florida.

What It Means to Be a Bull

Like the University itself, USF Bulls are strong, diverse and vibrant individuals. Students share a common experience that bonds them forever and alumni apply that experience in their personal journeys through life. What does it mean to be a USF Bull? The simple answer is it means everything. No matter where destiny leads, for thousands of Bulls, it all began at USF. As a relatively young University and emerging alumni nation, USF has made tremendous strides and competes with many of the country’s most respected institutions. The USF SealIn 1958, Dr. John Allen, USF’s first president, commissioned Henry Gardner of Industrial Supply Corporation to design and create the official seal for the University. President Allen wanted a symbol that would represent education on a global scale. Each element of the seal has a special meaning:

The sun represents life to all living things.

The lamp symbolizes learning.

The globe signifies the broadened perspective and opportunities provided by higher education.

The seal has been used since the first USF course catalog in 1959. For years, it was placed on everything from business cards to stationery. However, since 1988, the USF seal has been reserved for exclusive use on diplomas, official stationery, academic certificates and other legal documents.

Horns Up! Hand SignalThe Horns Up! hand signal is an instantly recognizable symbol of USF. To put your Horns Up!, fold your two middle fingers into your palm and place your thumb over them. The palm of your hand should be facing forward with your pinkie and index fingers extended like bull horns. The hand signal originated as a good luck ritual for free-throw shots during basketball games, but has evolved into a familiar greeting among Bulls and an all-purpose symbol of Bull pride.

The USF Alma MaterComposed by Wayne Hugoboom, a professor of music at USF in 1960, the USF Alma Mater was first used in 1961. Hugoboom won a USF song competition and received a $250 check for his composition. It’s typically played at special events like commencement and orientation. Herd of

ThunderUSF’s marching band, the Herd of Thunder (HOT), first took the field at Raymond James Stadium before the season home opener against Southwest Texas State on September 11, 1999. HOT’s first director, Sid Haton, was at the helm. The band walked onto the field for their first pre-game show in a dramatic stampede of musicians that was dubbed, “The Call of the Bulls,” a tradition that continues to this day.The marching band performs at pre-game shows, halftime and in the stands at all USF home football games, as well as select away games. In addition, they play at area and regional competitions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers games, USF bowl games and other events. HOT also includes a Show Band and Pep Band.

The Beef StudsThe idea of painting your entire body green and gold in support of USF athletics wasn’t a new idea when the Beef Studs came along, but they certainly took it to a whole new level of exposure. In 1999, Brian Hope (’03) and Walter Price (’04) decided to add some more excitement to USF football and basketball games, transforming into the “Green and Gold Guys.” A little body paint went a long way – with their bodies painted half green and half gold, the two freshmen became unofficial hype men, pumping up USF fans at home games. Their idea caught on and in 2002, a second group of painted students called “The Beef Studs” emerged. Founded by Brandon Faza (’05), the Beef Studs and Beef Babes are now a staple at all home football and basketball games. It’s hard to miss their signature grass skirts, bull horn hats and skillfully applied green and gold body paint. Their unique look and unrivaled enthusiasm have even caught the attention of national media.

USF CheerleadingThe USF cheer program consists of two teams—a co-ed team and an all-girl competitive team. Both squads cheer for football, men’s and women’s basketball, and home conference volleyball matches. Select squad members have the opportunity to travel to away football games and basketball tournaments. The all-girl squad continually ranks in the top five nationally and most recently took fourth place in the 2013 UCA College Cheerleading National Championship.

Sun DollsThe Sun Dolls are the premier dance team for USF and they perform on the sidelines at every home football game at Raymond James Stadium and during men’s and women’s basketball games in the Sun Dome. All members are full-time students with an interest in supporting USF athletics. They also participate in community events, such as local hospital visits, charity events and campus activities.

USF Athletics

USF’s first intercollegiate sports were swimming and soccer, which began in 1965. In 1968, USF’s existing athletic teams were invited to join the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Men’s basketball was added in 1970 and women’s basketball followed in 1972. The football team began play in 1997 and was only nine years old when invited to join the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) in 2005. Over the years, various USF athletic teams have dominated the competition in the Sun Belt and Metro Conferences, Conference USA and the Big East Conference. In 2013, USF joined the newly formed American Athletic Conference. In addition to football and basketball, USF competes in a variety of sports including tennis, golf, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, cross country, track and field and sailing.

Marshall Student Center

The Marshall Student Center (MSC) is the heart and soul of student life on USF’s Tampa campus. Its doors opened August 20, 2008 and quickly became the place to be—offering study resources, activities, meeting space, dining, outdoor venues and retail services.Students can work on class assignments in the Student Government-funded computer lab or find a spot to study in various lounges and quiet areas. Many like to take study breaks in the Sky Pad on the fourth floor and connect their laptops to television screens or challenge friends to video games in the specially equipped gaming room. The MSC is also home to student organization offices and departments focused on involvement, including New Student Connections, Student Government, Center for Student Involvement and the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement. Students can easily find something to do with all that these groups offer.Outside, the MSC is always busy with activities like Bull Market, Patio Tuesday, Movies on the Lawn, and plenty of student organization and department programs.• BULL MARKET has been one of the most recognizable traditions on

campus for the past 50 years. Every Wednesday afternoon, the MSC Plaza is filled with people looking to bargain, shop with vendors, speak with non-profit organizations and student organizations, as well as eat lunch and socialize with the USF community. This is a great weekly event for many USF organizations and programs to promote their cause and increase awareness.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

PlazaPerhaps the most popular gathering spot on USF’s Tampa campus is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza. This picturesque stretch between the Marshall Student Center and the John and Grace Allen Building used to be a treeless maze of sidewalks marked by a small bust of the legendary civil rights activist. On November 13, 1996, after extensive renovations, the MLK, Jr. Plaza was rededicated and featured a trellised colonnade, benches and serene reflecting pool with stone tablets engraved with a portion of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The Plaza is now a popular destination for sidewalk fairs, small concerts, showcases and even relaxing breaks between classes.

LibraryThe Library is the academic hub of USF and is open 24 hours during the school week. With seven floors all designed to help students excel in class, homework, research and group work, the Library is an educational haven on campus. The first two floors, known as the Learning Commons, are home to the largest computer lab on campus with hundreds of individual computers. The Writing Center on the first floor is staffed with graduate students who can help critique papers. Approximately 30 librarians are on staff to assist with locating and checking out materials, reserving study rooms or laptop computers, and answering questions in person or by phone, e-mail, online chat or text message. The building is also equipped with wireless access and a Starbucks to keep students energized. The Tutoring Center and the Office for Undergraduate Research are located on the second floor with quiet study space available on other floors. In addition, there is a Career Search station on the first floor next to Starbucks to help students seeking jobs and careers.

Botanical GardensThe USF Botanical Gardens are a hidden gem on the USF Tampa campus. When the gardens were established in 1969, much of campus was covered with scrub palm and ant hills. In the 1990s, it blossomed with new buildings and demonstration gardens in its existing location on the southwest corner of campus. It now serves as a teaching and research facility for the Biology department. With approximately seven acres of land and an additional greenbelt area, the Botanical Gardens are home to a living collection of more than 3,000 plants and natural habitats. An estimated 35,000 visitors enjoy the Botanical Gardens every year through a variety of festivals and events held in its lush surroundings.

Residential LivingLiving on campus not only offers a safe, convenient and supportive environment, but it’s truly how some of your best college memories will be made. Sun Dome Arena

From basketball and volleyball games to big-time concerts, Homecoming events and Commencement, there’s always something going on at the Sun Dome. Opened in December 1980, the multi-purpose venue is an iconic University landmark and engages the Tampa Bay community through a variety of events. In June 2011, the USF Board of Trustees approved a $35.6 million major renovation to the 250,000-square-foot arena to make the Sun Dome a beautifully modern place to entertain the community. Enhancements included improved seating, a hospitality and viewing club area, concessions, additional restrooms, state-of-the-art scoreboard and a team store.

Dance Marathon

Dance Marathon is the largest student-run philanthropy on college campuses around the country. Each Dance Marathon raises money for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, donating millions of dollars each year. Dance Marathon at USF raises money for All Children’s hospital in St. Petersburg, FL. Dance Marathon at USF isn’t just a single event - it’s all year long! Engineering Expo

The annual Engineering Expo is proof that engineers know how to have fun! This two-day event draws thousands of K-12 students from around the state to our campus. Here they learn the importance of math and science from professional engineers and USF students in celebration of National Engineers Week in February. Engineering firms and companies from all over the country set up displays and demonstrations. Popular activities include “Fun with Physics,” the “Chemical Magic Show,” a laser light show and a very competitive Electrathon Car race.

Bulls Service Breaks

Since 2001, the Bulls Service Breaks (BSB) Program has raised awareness on a variety of social issues in our community and abroad. These service learning opportunities give students the chance to make a significant impact on a local, national and international level.Projects may range from volunteering in an orphanage to planting trees or feeding the homeless, depending on the social issue being addressed. These low cost, week-long programs are held every winter and spring break with international trips during the summer. Past trips included sites in Florida, Georgia, Washington D.C, Belize and Ghana.

Walk A Mile In Her Shoes

Inspired by the idea that you cannot truly understand the experiences of others until you have walked a mile in their shoes, male students and others from USF and the community show their commitment to end violence against women by marching in high heels and participating in USF’s Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®, sponsored by the student organization N.I.T.E. and the REAL Program of the Center for Victim Advocacy & Violence Prevention.

International Festival

USF’s celebrates its diversity in many ways and the International Festival (or iFest) is a fun one! Over 100 multicultural and other student groups and organizations transform the MLK Plaza into four different regions of the world, providing knowledge and cultural experiences found in these regions. HomecomingHomecoming is the most popular annual celebration for USF students, alumni and the campus community. The University comes alive during a week of exciting events, including a kickoff, carnival, comedy show, student competitions, night parade, after party and Homecoming Ball, where a Homecoming Court is crowned representing each of USF’s three regional institutions. The festivities culminate with the annual Homecoming football game at Raymond James Stadium. Homecoming is one of USF’s longest traditions, dating back to 1964, the year after USF’s first graduating class.

Stampede of Service

Since 2006, Stampede of Service (SOS) has been USF’s largest community service event, held in conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration in January. SOS gives thousands of students, faculty and staff an opportunity to participate in service, enjoy time with friends and make a difference. It’s not only an important campus tradition, but also a meaningful connection between USF and the Tampa Bay community. Founded by former Student Government President Maxon Victor (‘07), the tradition has continued each year serving dozens of local organizations dedicated to senior citizens, the environment, youth, homelessness, poverty, women’s issues and education.

University Lecture Series

The University Lecture Series (ULS) began around 1986 and featured faculty and staff lectures on topics relevant to the campus community. Today, the ULS is stronger than ever, attracting international speakers like John Legend, Jeff Corwin, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Maya Angelou, Reverend Jesse Jackson, RENT star Anthony Rapp and Jerry Greenfield of Ben & Jerry’s. In 1990, ULS earned the Drew Pearson Award for the top lecture program in the country. This student-supported program has created a safe and engaging environment on the USF Tampa campus where students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members can explore important issues affecting the world and our society.

USF WeekIn 2009, former Mayor Pam Iorio officially declared April 9 as USF Day in Tampa. Since then, USF students, employees, alumni and fans have come together to participate in USF Week, a week-long celebration of Bull pride and tradition with special events on all USF campuses. USF Week events usually include a pep rally, The Ultimate Bull Talent Show, Rocky’s Rockin’ B-Day Bash and Bullstock _ plus a spring football event, if the schedule permits.

BullstockThe Campus Activities Board organizes Bullstock, a springtime live outdoor music festival. In its early days, Bullstock was held on Crescent Hill and featured local bands and other attractions, such as a petting zoo. As it grew in popularity, the event was moved to a larger venue and now features nationally known campus bands. Past acts have included Panic! at The Disco, The All-American Rejects and 3oh!3.

Student Government

The mission of Student Government (SG) at USF is to be the premier opportunity in becoming engaged, provide a setting for all students to be equally heard and represented, and maximally enhance each student’s experience and development. USF SG is comprised of over 250 student volunteers and employees who serve the needs and act as the voice of the student body. Modeled after the federal government, there are three branches of SG comprised of student leaders who advocate for their peers: Executive, Legislative and Judicial. As the administrators of A&S fees paid with tuition, SG is responsible for providing valuable programs and services to students, including SAFE Team, Bulls Radio, Computer Services, Bulls Blitz and Legal Aid. Greek Life

For many, Greek Life is more than just another way for students to get involved in their community. It’s a place where you can find your fit on a large campus. USF is home to more than 40 Greek organizations representing the great diversity among our students. Greek Life originated on campus in the late 1960s and the Greek Village opened to residents in 2003, providing housing for select chapters. Apart from offering leadership and social development opportunities, the fraternities and sororities have consistently been the largest contributors to community service and philanthropy fundraising on campus.

The Green and Gold Guides (G3) is an organization comprised of USF students that provides campus tours to prospective students, participates in admissions events and works closely with athletics. Orientation Team LeaderS

The USF journey begins with Orientation where students learn firsthand what it’s like to be a Bull. Orientation Team Leaders (OTLs) have the opportunity to become part of the Orientation family while welcoming a new class to Bull Country. Over the summer, OTLs lead a small group of students through campus tours, small group discussions and fun activities that prepare future Bulls for campus life.

The Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement (CLCE) develops students into leaders who will make a positive difference in the world through programs that help each student discover their passion and talents while developing their leadership and citizenship skills. Located in the Student Life Tower of the Marshall Student Center, the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) has become the hub of student involvement opportunities on campus. Participating in CSI offers multiple ways for students to get involved with the University outside the classroom. Study or travel AbroadUnlike any other time in your life, college gives you the chance to explore the unknown, try new things and learn about the world around you. One of the best ways to accomplish all of those things is through travel. There are a variety of resources at USF designed to help you gain experiences abroad. Trips vary from a few days to a few months in over 35 countries on six continents. While abroad, you can take classes for credit or focus solely on enjoying the adventure. Dr. Philip Motta’s

Sharks and Rays Class

Marine biology students enrolled in Dr. Philip Motta’s Biology of Sharks and Rays class have the unique opportunity to gain valuable hands-on research experience. A recent partnership with the Mote Marine Laboratory measured the movement patterns, distribution and abundance of all types of sharks, from bull sharks to black tips. Students participated in an expedition to the Gulf of Mexico, where Dr. Motta taught them how to properly catch and handle these sharks. Once on the boat, students helped tag, measure for size and draw blood to benefit multiple research projects, including how the Deepwater Horizon oil spill affected marine animals. “When you have a six-foot bull shark in the back of the boat and the students have to hold that shark down and draw blood at the same time with a struggling animal and record all the measurements, that is something invaluable,” Dr. Motta says. “The students will never forget that.”

Novel Compounds Found

Beneath the Ice of Antarctica

Fiona Kearns is an undergraduate student majoring in chemistry who works under Dr. Bill Baker and Dr. H. Lee Woodcock in their Natural Products Chemistry Lab. Dr. Baker’s research has taken him beneath the ice of Antarctica where his team collects invertebrates such as sponges, corals and sea anemones. These types of marine organisms can produce a variety of defensive chemicals to ward off predators which may be manipulated and used to treat certain human diseases. One specific new compound found in Antarctica may have real benefits ranging from the creation of pesticides to anti-cancer treatments. Fiona’s role in the process is to computationally introduce erebusinone to specific proteins and analyze the potential reactions.

Sponsored by USFAA, the MLK Scholarship is awarded annually to a USF student who best represents the ideals and philosophies of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This prestigious award recognizes those who have made the strongest and most impactful contributions to civic, volunteer and academic pursuits that embody Dr. King’s teachings and initiatives.

With a living collection of over 3,000 plants, animals and natural habitats spanning almost 16 acres, the USF Botanical Gardens is a beautiful gem on the far west side of campus. Enjoy the scenery or attend an event, such as “Taste of Honey,” which allows guests to sample dozens of exotic honey flavors, take beehive tours and learn safe beekeeping practices.

The Claw is home to alligators, deer and other wildlife that will make you feel like you’re in the heart of a nature preserve.

Get Your USF Class Ring

The USF class ring is a timeless reminder of your experience and accomplishments at the University of South Florida. This keepsake marks your transition from a USF student into the thundering herd of USF alumni. Students and families who purchase their class rings during “Ring Week” will be invited to a special ring presentation ceremony, sponsored by the USF Alumni Association, to formally mark this special occasion.

Running with the Bulls

Running with the Bulls is a tradition before every USF home football game, in which a select group of students and alumni are chosen to run through the tunnel and rush the field with the football team, Sun Dolls and cheerleaders. Dressed in all white with red sashes to represent the Spanish matador, they quite literally “Run with the Bulls.”

Join the Crowd at the Bulls Stampede

USF football coach Willie Taggart started the Bulls Stampede tradition to give the football team a powerful entrance into Raymond James Stadium. When the team arrives and steps off the bus, a crowd of supporters, including the Herd of Thunder band, cheerleaders, Sun Dolls and Bulls fans, are there to greet them in anticipation of victory.

Give Back to the Community

Many charitable student organizations, such as Project Downtown, prepare food to give to the homeless in downtown Tampa Bay. Take an evening to give back to your community and learn more about the world around you.

Find the Meteorite

Visit the “Solar Rotary” outside the Communication and Information Sciences building. It was commissioned in 1995 to not only be an aesthetically pleasing piece of art, but a functional, natural timekeeper. Historical dates and times, such as USF’s groundbreaking ceremony and the landing of Apollo 11 on the moon, cast shadows upon corresponding plaques on the sculpture. The summer solstice specifically casts a perfect ring around the center pedestal, which holds a 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite that fell in Dade County.

Take a Study Break With MLK, Jr.

The picturesque MLK Plaza stretches between the Marshall Student Center and the John and Grace Allen Building. What used to be a treeless maze of sidewalks is now marked by a small bust of the legendary civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After extensive renovations in 1996, the plaza now features a trellised colonnade, benches and serene reflecting pool with stone tablets engraved with a portion of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. This is always a good place to find some quiet time in your day.

Visit the Grassy Bull

The topiary bull is our “larger than life” mascot welcoming everyone at the entrance to the Marshall Student Center. *Fun Fact: More than 2,400 zip ties and 29 pounds of hairpins were used to install and keep the plants in place.

Get Out and See the World

USF has some excellent and cost-efficient resources to help you travel. Bulls Service Breaks sends students across the country and overseas during winter and spring break for community service projects. If you want a longer experience, try a study abroad program.

Take Your Picture With Rocky D. Bull

USF’s beloved mascot, Rocky D. Bull, is frequently seen at sporting events and around campus. Every graduate must take at least one picture with this local celebrity.
