Signing-Up for a RefWorks Account

1. Go to http://www.refworks.com and select logon.

2. On the remote access tab, enter the group code.(email [email protected] for the group code)

3. Select logon.

4. See New to RefWorks, Select Sign up for an Individual Account.

5. Complete the form and Click Register.

Using RefWorks to Manage Citations and Create Bibliographies

RefWorks Classic

1. Select 2.0 to switch from RefWorks Classic to RefWorks 2.0.

1. Select New Folder to organize citations, for example, name the folder Infectious.

2. Leave RefWorks open while you search for articles in databases.

Using the “Direct Export” Option. EBSCO (MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, etc.)

1. Select each reference by clicking the

Add to folder icon.

2. Select the Folder icon.

3. Select the title(s) by clicking the box to theleft of the title.

4. Select the Export icon.

5. Select Direct Export to RefWorks.

6. Click Save.

7. Switch window to RefWorks and Select

View Last Imported Folder to seethe newly imported references.

HINT: Turn-off Browser pop-up blocker before exporting to RefWorks.

PubMed to RefWorks

1. Search PubMed.

2. Put a check in the box for each citation you wish to import into RefWorks.

3. Select the Display Settings, select MEDLINE as the format .

4. Select Apply.5. See Medline formatted text..

6. Copy all of the text.

7. Switch to RefWorks.

8. Select Import from theQuick Access display.

9. Select From Text.

10. Select NLM PubMed from the Import Filter/Data Sourcedrop down menu.

11. Select PubMed from the Database dropdown menu.

12. Paste the text copied in PubMed.

13. Select the folder name from the Import to Folderdrop down menu.

14. Select the Import button.

15. Select the folder name from the Folders displayto view citations.

Creating Bibliographies Using RefWorks 2.01. Select the Create Bibliography button.

Using Write-N-Cite to Format Bibliography and In-Text Citations.1. Log-in to RefWorks.

2. Download and install Write-N-Cite plug-in from RefWorks Tools for appropriate platform (Vista or XP or MAC OS10.3 or later) and version of Word (2003 or 2007).

3. Open Word document.

4. Click Write-N-Citeand Log-in. (For Word2007, click Add-Ins Tab.)

5. For In-Text Citation,place cursor after quoteand click the Cite link in Write-N-Cite.

6. To Format Bibliography, click the Bibliographytab in Write-N-Cite.

7. Carefully review bibliography and in-text citations to make sure each conforms to style guide requirements andmanually correct errors.

2. Output Style drop down menu.:Select the appropriate style (listspublications by name as well asstyle manuals.

3. Format a Bibliography from aList of References.

File Type drop down menu:Select the appropriate type of file,for example, Word for Windows.

4. References to Include dropdown menu: if created customfolders, select folder.

5. Select Create Bibliographybutton.

HINT: RefWorks is not perfect—Always check Bibliography for errors.
