Story books can be a fun and effective method of introducing, modeling, and reinforcing developmentally appropriate social and emotional skills for infants and toddlers. The following story books are available from the KITS Early Childhood Resource Center and can be checked out online by any Kansas parent or early care and education provider who works with infants or toddlers. The books were selected upon recommendation by professional organizations and members of the KCCTO-KITS Infant Toddler Specialists Network (ITSN). Most are durable board books. Many of them have activities and resources available online with suggestions for how they can be used effectively with very young children. Using Social and Emotional Story Books with Infants and Toddlers

The development of healthy and secure relationships with adults and other children provides the foundation for learning in all areas (Kansas Early Learning Standards, 2014). When young children are nurtured by caring and responsive adults to identify and express emotions in appropriate ways, they develop “emotional literacy”. When important adults in their lives model, teach, and support age-appropriate social skills, friendship skills, problem-solving, and self-regulation through positive interactions, little ones begin to develop self-confidence as well as social and emotional competence.
