Data Overview• Commission for Higher Education collects record-level data from

Indiana public higher education institutionsData elements include:

-Enrollment: status, major, credits attempted/earned, remedial credits attempted/earned, cumulative credits,

cumulative GPA)-Degree Conferral: level, major, date-Student demographics: race, gender, county

of origin• CHE obtains additional data from National Student Clearinghouse• CHE longitudinal data system links students across Indiana public

colleges, augments with NSC data to link students with Indiana private & out of state colleges

• Indiana’s Statewide Longitudinal Data System (IWIS) links high school graduates & high school data with CHE data and workforce data

• All of these systems/data points make these models possible

Page 7: Using Statewide Data to Track Students: A New Definition of Student Success

The Tools Used• Various data sets:

• ICHE yearly Indiana public college data submissions (CHEDSS)• National Student Clearinghouse• Indiana Department of Education (graduates, diploma type, ACT,

SAT, AP scores, other demographic characteristics)• Department of Workforce Development (unemployment insurance,

• CHE longitudinal data system• Department of education longitudinal data system• DWD longitudinal data system• IWIS (Indiana’s linked K-20W longitudinal data system)
