DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme is offered by full research. However, students without sufficient research skills and knowledge are required to enroll and pass the following courses during the first two (2) semesters of their enrolment (i.e. before being allowed to defend their thesis proposal):

a) SZRZ 6014 Research Methodology b) SCLE 6014 Academic Writing c) Any other course as determined by the supervisor or Academic Committee.

To complete the Ph.D. programme, students are required to:

3. Present and defend proposed research/thesis to a committee; 4. Present progress reports of research work at colloquiums arranged by the Graduate School or College; 5. Produce at least two (2) articles, in which (Option A or Option B):

Option A i. at least one (1) article is accepted for publication in ISI Journal or Scopus; and ii. at least one (1) article is under review for publication in a refereed journal.

Option B Two (2) articles are published in a refereed journal

6. Attend a viva session to defend the thesis; and 7. Submit a final thesis.

MASTER IN APPLIED LINGUISTICS

SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Malaysian applicants must posses the following: i. A Bachelor’s degree with honours in Linguistics, English Language, Teaching English as a Second Language

(TESL/TESOL) or Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from any Institutions of Higher Learning recognised by the University Senate; or

ii. a Bachelor’s degree with honours from any Institutions of Higher Learning recognised by the University Senate and must have at least three (3) years teaching experience in English language course or have a certificate/diploma in Linguistics, English Language, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL/TESOL) or Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).

International applicants must posses the following:

i. A Bachelor’s degree with honours in Linguistics, English Language, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL/TESOL) Or Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from any Institutions of Higher Learning recognised by the University Senate with a CGPA of at least 2.75; and

ii. Fulfill the English Language requirements.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The Master in Applied Linguistics is offered in three (3) structures, which are by coursework, coursework and dissertation, and full research.

(A) Coursework In order to be conferred the Master in Applied Linguistics by coursework, students have to complete at least 40 credit hours with a CGPA of at least 3.00. (B) Coursework and Dissertation

In order to be conferred the Master in Applied Linguistics by coursework and dissertation, students must complete at least 19 credit hours of coursework and 21 credit hours of dissertation. (C) Research Students are required to:

i. Present and defend proposed research to a committee; ii. Present progress reports of research work at colloquiums arranged by the Graduate School or College; iii. Attend a viva session to defend the thesis; and iv. Submit a final thesis.

Students without sufficient research skills and knowledge are required to attend and pass the following courses with at least B grade before being allowed to defend their proposal (i.e. within the first two semesters of their enrollment):

i. SZRZ 6014 Research Methodology; ii. SCLE 6014 Academic Writing; and/or iii. Any other course as determined by the supervisor or Academic Committee.


MASTER OF EDUCATION SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENT Applicants for Master of Education Specialization in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Psychology, and Instructional Technology must posses the following:

i. A Bachelor’s degree with honours from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate with a CGPA of at least 2.75; or

ii. A Bachelor’s degree with honours from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate with a CGPA of at least 2.50 and three (3) years of teaching experience; or

iii. Any other equivalent qualification recognised by the University Senate; and

iv. A professional qualification (i.e. holding a diploma or certificate in education). Applicants for Master of Education specialization in English Language Teaching must posses the following: a) Local Applicant

i. A Bachelor’s degree with honours in TESL/TESOL/TEFL/Linguistics/English Language or any other related field from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate; or

ii. A Bachelor’s degree with honours with at least 3 years of teaching experience in English Language; or

iii. Any other equivalent qualification recognised by the University Senate; and iv. A professional qualification (i.e. holding a diploma or certificate in education).

*note: candidates who do not meet the above minimum requirement can be interviewed by the School.

b) International Applicant

i. A Bachelor’s degree with honours in TESL/TESOL/TEFL/Linguistics/English Language or any other related field

from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate; or

ii. Any other equivalent qualification recognised by the University Senate; and

iii. Fulfill the English Language requirementss with the following score of: • 575 in TOEFL; or • 6.5 in IELTS

Students without professional qualification are required to attend and pass the following pre-requisite courses with at least B grade before being allowed to proceed with the Master of Education courses.

i. A Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or Computer Science or any other related field with: a. a CGPA of at least 2.50; or b. A CGPA of less than 2.50 and at least 3 years of work experience in Information Technology or

Computer Science or related field; OR

ii. A Bachelor’s degree with honours in a field of other than information technology or computer science with work experience in planning, development, operation and maintenance of information system or information technology of not less than 3 years; OR

iii. A diploma in information technology, computer science or nay other related field with a work experience of at least 5 years; OR

MASTER OF SCIENCE (TECHNOPRENEURSHIP) SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENT Applicants for Master of Science (Technopreneurship) must be a Malaysian citizen with age of within 22 – 40 years old and must possess the following:

i. a Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science or any other related field with a CGPA of least 3.00; OR

ii. a Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science or any other related field with a CGPA of 2.50 – 2.99 and work experience of at least 2 years; OR

iii. a Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science or any other related field with a CGPA of 2.00 – 2.49 and approved by the Selection Committee based on business idea that innovative and potential to be commercialized; OR

iv. a diploma holder with a minimum of age 35 years old and relevant work experience; AND v. pass an interview session and test that is conducted by Selection Committee.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE In order to be conferred the degree of Master of Science (Technopreneurship), students must:

i. enroll and pass all modules for Technopreneurship programme; ii. produce one prototype product or service based on IT research that potential to be marketed and submit a

thesis which contains full report of research process and the prototype development; iii. produce a complete business plan; iv. set up a company by private or partnership; AND v. fulfill one of the following requirements:

a. get a grant at least RM50,000.00 from any agency such as MARA, CRADLE, MAVCAP, MTDC, MDV, MDeC (Preseed Fund), and MeCD; OR

b. Produce sales of at least RM50,000.00 for product or IT services that was developed as in the article ii above.


MASTER OF ARTS (CONTEMPORARY MALAY LANGUAGE STUDIES) SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENT Applicants for Master of Arts (Contemporary Malay Language Studies) must posses the following:

MASTER OF SCIENCE (COUNSELLING) SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENT Applicants for Master of Science (Counselling) must fulfill the following criteria for admission:

i. A Bachelor’s degree with honours in Counselling from UUM or any other universities recognised by the University Senate with a CGPA of at least 2.75 and work experience as a counselor for at least one (1) year; OR
