简介

Has it kicked in yet? If it hasn’t, just pause let all you have accomplished overtake you. You have completed your Chinese Language course, Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral Program. You have done it! Congratulations class of 2013!

We can all clearly remember our first day in Beijing. All we could really think about at that time was graduating and returning home. However, in between the beginning and ending of our studies was where we chose to live our best lives. The friendships formed, the birthday celebrations, the weight gain and loss, the examinations that eventually led to our thesis defense and of course the cultural assimilation experienced with the language, people and food. Can you imagine another city in the world with so many nationalities present, so much history? I am sure there are many, but none like Beijing. China has helped us experience our own version of the United Nations and for that we should truly be thankful; A ‘United Nations’ where religion or ethnicity didn’t matter as we were all united with one goal in mind; getting our degrees. And that we did.

There is so much pressure and fear in us about finding work, excelling, knowing what our next step should be, ensuring that we keep in contact with our friends or not losing that person that is now our significant other. We should rest assured that all of it will be okay. Whether we will make the journey home or to a new country or choose to remain in China, we shouldn’t be afraid of the unknown because we have lived it already. Coming to China in itself was our unknown and we survived it. Be assured that at the end of it, the process of packing up and

going home or to a new country will be okay, everything will be okay. Everything eventually comes to an end but at every ending, I’d like to believe there is a beautiful beginning awaiting us.

We are more than our present circumstance; we are manifestations of prayers, aspirations and the hard work of our ancestors and their belief that someday their descendants, you, me, could achieve this milestone. We all had high expectations when we arrived here, from becoming proficient in Mandarin to travelling or working harder in school. We are now starting a new chapter in our lives and though it won’t always be clear in the beginning, everything will become clearer with time. For me, life is a continuous journey. Our journey hasn’t ended yet; in fact I’d like to believe it has just begun because at any moment we can start afresh.

Endings are inevitable, but so are new beginnings. As we are about to begin a new chapter of our lives let us keep in mind that though we are at a crossroads we shouldn’t let fear cause us to step back, second guess or stop being productive. Look for new ways to fulfill your dreams and surround yourself with people who can contribute to what you’re trying to accomplish.

We have cried so many tears since we arrived in Beijing and smiled fifty times more. We have met some amazing people that have guided us along our journey thus far, without them, we cannot imagine where we would stand today; and for that we must remain grateful.

We had some great times, amazing memories, the world needs some wonderful people like the ones we each met while studying at our soon to be alma mater so we must be willing to share them in order to make the world a better place.
