Only the top half of a 72-year-oldtourist’s body remained after hewas brutally attacked by a sharkat Second Beach, Port St Johns,on Saturday, 22 March, in what

is described as one of the most gruesomeshark attacks ever.

Police would not release the Austrian’sname.One of the people on the beach said, “If you

look at the wounds, it was a very big shark.“He was undoubtedly almost instantly

dead.”It is the eighth shark attack at this beach

in the past five years, which has in the pastbeen described as the “deadliest beach in theworld” by British newspaper The Telegraph.Althoughno one can saywhat kind of shark

it was, it is believed to be a Zambezi shark.“Youusually see the toothmarks on the vic-

tim’s body, which help determine what kindof shark it was, but in this case it will be verydifficult,” the source said.Craig Lambinon of theNational Sea Rescue

Institute (NSRI), said the rescue team fromPort St Johns were called out to the scene atabout 15:00.John Costello, commander of NSRI Port St

Johns, said the deceased and his wife werepart of a tour group visiting the country.People at the guest housewhere they stayed

allegedly warned the tourists not to go swim-ming.“The water was very dirty and the sea was

rough,” Costello said.“The man was apparently between knee

StatsSA’s latest report on causes of death inSouth Africa shows slow continued declinesin deaths due to communicable diseases likeHIV but increases in deaths due to injuriesand non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Tuberculosis (TB), however, remains theleading cause of natural death in the countryand about 60 percent of South African TB pa-tients are co-infected with HIV.The report presents statistics on the

number and causes of death for 2011 and alsoprovides information on trends in mortalityand causes of deaths that occurred duringthe period 1997 to 2011.Using data collected by the Department of

TUBERCULOSIS (TB) is a chronic infec-tious disease that usually affects thelungs. TB is mainly spread when some-one with TB coughs or sneezes, andsomeone else breathes in the air-bornebacteria.A person can be infected with the TB

organism for years without getting sickor spreading it on to others, but whentheir immune system weakens for somereason, TB infection can develop into ac-tive disease.TBcanbe cured, but requires rigorous

unbroken treatment that lasts for sixmonths – failure to complete the treat-ment regimen can result in the emer-gence of drug-resistant strains of TB.As TB is a common opportunistic in-

fection ailing peoplewithHIV, SouthAf-ricahasaparticularlyhighburdenofTBdue to its high prevalence of HIV. In ad-dition to this, increasing numbers ofpeople are becoming infected with drug-resistant TB strains.Symptoms that are very suggestive of

TB include a persistent cough, night

sweats, weight loss and fever. Othersymptoms that may also suggest TB in-clude loss of appetite, tiredness andmuscle weakness, coughing up bloodand chest pains. Anyone experiencingthese symptoms must get tested.According to studies, people with la-

tent TB do not transmit TB, but if theyhappen to become infected with HIV, itdrives up their chance of the latent TBbecoming active. People with HIV re-duce their risk of TB infection by two-thirds if they are on antiretroviral ther-apy (ART).The current injected vaccine known

as BCG, which is administered soon af-ter birth, is effective in protecting chil-dren against tuberculosis meningitis(TB in the brain) but it does not protectagainst lung TB, particularly in adoles-cencewhen immunitywanes.A lot of re-search isbeingdone to try tounderstandwhy the vaccine wanes and to developa new generation of BCG that offers ex-tended protection.(Source www.health24.com)

What is Tuberculosis?

Statistics South Africa has found that deathsin the country have continued to decline since2007.According to the report, this decrease is

linked to decreases in communicable diseaseslike tuberculosis (TB), influenza, pneumoniaand intestinal infections, particularly amongwomen.While still among the top ten causes of death

in the country, HIV-attributable deaths con-tinue to decrease slowly and comprised aboutthree percent of deaths in 2010.The publication also notes that in recent

years, there has been a modest increase indeaths due to NCDs. Among the ten leadingcauses of death, heart disease, stroke, diabetesand hypertension are on the rise.Additionally, about nine percent of all

deaths in 2011 were due to injuries.

The Ithemba Lokuphila HIV/Aids supportgroup received netball kits to keep healthyand fit by exercising.The Masimanyane HIV/Aids support

group and Umkhosi Wezulu Agriculturalgroup received agricultural equipment.Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries,

Nonkanyiso Ndabankulu said they weregrateful for the relationship that they havewith the municipality and they are going tocarry onworking hard at growing their owncrops as it helped them stay in good health.“Starting these projects was the best deci-

sion we had ever made. Poverty will neverknock on our door if we carry on supportingeach other,” concluded Ndabankulu.

THEAlfredNzoDistrictMunicipality officiallyopened the R35 million Qwidlana waterscheme’s phase one at Qwidlana village inMount Frere recently.

More than 1 192 homes will now get access topurified water.The community of the village had been rely-

ing on unprotected springs and seasonalstreams – which are prone to microbiologicalcontamination – for their water supply.During winter months, the streams and

springs in the area dry up, forcing people towalk long distances to obtain water from otherunprotected sources.The Alfred Nzo District Municipal Mayor,

Councillor Eunice Diko, said they had done alot in the past few weeks in making sure thatpeople have access to clean water and they aregoing to do everything in their power to lookafter the community’s basic needs.Phase one of the project will bring water to

ten villages housing more than 7 000 residents.Since the beginning of thewater scheme projectabout 150 job opportunities have been createdfor villagers which ensure that they can bringfood to the table.The workers also learnt new skills, which

would be useful to them after the project hadbeen completed.The Mayor of the Umzimvubu Local Munici-

pality, CouncillorKhulukazi Phangwa, said shewas happy to be part of a project which aimedat changing the lives of people of the MountFrere community – especially by providingthem with something that they had never hadbefore.The two municipal mayors also officially

handed overmore than 800 toilets to theQwidla-na community. Another 600 toilets are in thepipeline for the nearby Chancele community.

FLAMES consumed a Mount Frere shop-ping complex in the early hours of Sun-day, March 16.

Only a burnt-out carcass now bearstestiment that the area opposite JustOn Cosmetics (on the N2) was once aplace of trade.Allegations were made last week that

workers from the 10 foreigner-ownedshops in the complex, burnt the centredown over wage disputes.But eye witnesses said they did not see

anyone starting a fire in the complex.MountFrerepolice spokesperson,Lieu-

tenant Edith Mjoko, said these allega-tions were only rumours.According to her, the owner of the com-

plex suspected that faulty electrical wir-ing caused the fire.Mjoko said an investigation to confirm

the cause of the fire is still underway. Adetailed report will be issued after the in-vestigation is concluded.All ten shops in the complex burnt out,

as well as a tavern that was situated be-hind the centre.

Tom officially opened the library to kickstart LibraryWeek and in commemorationof Human Rights Day.She said thiswas inspired by the fact that

the government wants to broaden chil-dren’s minds into reaching their full capa-bilities no matter where they lived.“What is most important about this day

is for us to encourage children to be curi-ous and to love learning about new things.Our country’s future depends on this,”

she added. The MEC encouraged parents tobe involved and to participate by reading totheir children every day and to teach chil-dren to be patient, because education needspatience.Speaking on behalf of the Department of

Education, Vuyokazi Norolela spoke a greatdeal to parents on instilling a love for read-ing in their children.“Children are the leaders of tomorrow

which is why we emphasise the importanceof a good education so that they can changetheir home background for the better.”Sharon Langa from St Peter’s Junior Sec-

Fire fighting and disaster equipment wasalso handed over to the Ntabankulu disastermanagement team, to strengthen its re-sponse, following the recent storm whichclaimedmore than 11 lives and left 400 peoplehomeless.

“The fire rescue equipment was brought to

Ntabankulu because it is in the centre of thedistrict and it serves to help communities intimes when disaster might strike,” saidANDM Mayor, Councillor Eunice Diko.

So far more than 60 structures have beenbuilt in Ntabankulu and four contractors arecurrently building more structures to acco-

modate those who had lost their homes.An estimated R6.4 million was spent on fire

fighting and disaster response equipment.Nompi Nohayi, one of the beneficiaries of

the temporary structures, expressed her grat-itude to the municipality, and said she wouldnever forget what they had done for her.

IN fulfilling its legislative mandate of re-storing dignity for children in need, the De-partment of SocialDevelopment andSpecialProgrammes, in partnership with the Nta-bankulu Local Municipality (NLM), hostedits annual back-to-school campaign.

It took place at the Nowalala village on

March 18 in Ntabankulu.TheMEC for Social Development and Spe-

cial Programmes, Pemmy Majodina, wasthe guest speaker and she handed overschool uniforms to about 200 children.

“The purpose of the campaign was aimedat reaching out to the needy children and as-sisting themwith material support in orderfor them to attend school during the currentacademic year,” said Majodina.

Other objectives of the campaign were tocreate awareness on children’s rights, topromote community participation on issuesaffecting children, to uplift the socio-eco-nomic conditions of children in the Prov-ince and also to strengthen partnerships indealing with issues affecting children.

Majodina also launched the BabondlaPoultry Primary Co-operative Project andconducted an imbizowith communitymem-

bers. By the year 2011/12 the project wasfundedby theDepartment of SocialDevelop-ment and Special Programmes to theamount of R500 000 and the NLM construct-ing a structure to operate in and gave them200 chickens and feed.

AyabongaNdimakude, one of the uniformbeneficiaries, said he was happy to receivea full school uniform which will motivatehim to attend classes everyday.

THE 2010 Storm Breakers and AmaMpondoUnited FC contesting in the South AfricanFootball Associations’s SABRegional LeagueCoastal Stream continuedwith their winningways last Sunday.

Since the Storm Breakers are behind witha goal difference against AmaMpondo United

they had to pull up their socks and won witha score of 5-0 against the Umngazi FC.

The AmaMpondo United FC continued toincrease the goal difference by beating FCPV6-0 last Sunday making things tough forStorm Breakers who are also aiming toclinch the crown and be promoted to the nextlevel.Both the leading teams are left with two

games to play which will decide who is the

champion between the two teams. TheAmaMpondo United will have to go to theirnext remaining games well-prepared as theywill be facing Iqhayiya, which is in the fourthposition in the log standing, and Internation-al, which is in the third place.The 2010 Storm Breakers will play against

Red Lion which is second from the bottom ofthe league and FCPV which is third from thebottom of the league.

Since the Storm Breakers are on top andhungry for the title which they are contestingwithAmaMpondo they can capitalize on theirposition in the logwhichmight also bring fearto their opponents.A source close to the Storm Breakers said

in these remaining games theywere sure thattheir team would beat them with high mar-gins to claim the title back from AmaMpondoUnited.
