Lucia Figliomeni, defied disability and published poetry By Bryce Butler

GUILDERLAND — Lucia -Figliomeni, 28, died March 5 in St. Peter's Hospital after a short ill­ness and a long and triumphant struggle against muscular dystro­phy,

Miss Figliomeni published ponetry in magazines and antholo­gies, wrote short stories, and car-Tied on a voluminous correspon­dence. In the last three years of heY life, she wrote on a computer The alphabetScroUed slowly across the screen, and when the letter she wanted .appeared, she hit a switch with the slight twitch of hej^thumbthat was the only move­ment remaining to her hands,

"The stories were mainly children's stories," said her sister Carmelina Crupi. T h e other big component was family stories. Our father knew the old stories in the family in Italy — things that had happened. My father was the old­est brother, and no one else knew these family stories;- he was the one who carried on the stories. Lucia didn't want the stories to-die, so she transcribed them."

Miss Figliomeni was born jn Calabria, Italy, in 19)58. She was diagnosed with muscular distro-phy a year or two later when sKe couldn't learn to walk. The family came to this country in 197 Lsoshe could have proper treatment, her sister said,

When she began school, Miss Figliomeni was sent to the Cere-' bral Palsy Center for the Disabled. Her growing physical disability re-quired some, adjustrrient, arid most

muscular dystrophy patients suf­fer enough mental problems to keep them behind in school,, her sister said.

But Miss1 Figliomeni excelled, and hofr- family sent her to Holy

o Cross School in Albany for fourth grade. The following year, the

^Jfrgliomenis moved to Guilderland, where heir father, the late Carmelo Figliomeni, was a chef at La Stellp Restaurant on Carmari Road. She attended Christ ,the Kmg School through eighth grade, and went to high school at Mercy High School in Albany > i

"She graduated With honors from high school," her sister said. "She refused to ljave an aide.. Friends helped her." As her dis­ease progressed, and she fcould no longer pick things" up, this help included placing a pen in her hand. "Then she would drag her hand," her sister said. "She would write, but very slowly. She took her own notes; she' ^managed; she' didn't • want to be treated differently.1/

After high- school, Mtas Figliomeni took several courses in writing children's stories.

Miss Figliomeni's mother was ' originally told her daughter

wouldn't live past seven. Mrs. Crupi said medical professionals the family had'consulted hadn't' ever heard df someone living as long as the 28-years her sister achieved,

Miss -Figliomeni nearly* died many times, Mrs Crupi said. Ten, years ago, she lapsed into a coma. JShe was" put on a respirator, but was hot expected to live.

The respiratp$ which she re­quired for Jhe rest of her life, oper-< atexl through a tracheotomy that made^Miss Figliomeni unable to Sjpeak. "We could read her lips," her sister said, "but because of her disease, she couldn't make words like other people. Unless you knew her from before, you couldn't un­derstand her " The respirator also made her. unable to swallow, and for the past decade,tshe has been fed through a tube.

None of this defeated her. "She will be remembered for her genu­ine spirit of liffe and her remark­able positive outlook," her family wrote „ v

Furieral services'were Monday at tyew Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home in Colohie, and Christ the King .Church, where'' the Mass of Christian burial was celebrated. Burial was in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Colonie.
