You would be forgiven for thinking that Halloween and thecustom of trick or treating is an American import and, whilstthe Americans have indeed created a holiday atmospheresurrounding Halloween, the origins actually date back toPagan and Christian practises in the UK.These have their origins in an ancient Celtic festival calledSamhain meaning summer's end. The Celts believed this wasthe time when the veil between this world and the next was atits thinnest, allowing the spirits of the dead to move freelyamong the living.Around the 8th century, the Christian church began tocelebrate All Hallows' Day to honour saints and pray for soulswho had not yet reached heaven. As they were looking toconvert people to Christianity this date was set as 1 Novemberin an attempt to accommodate the pagan practises. The word Halloween comes from 'Hallowed evening' and isthe day before All Hallows Day - also known as All Saints' Day.

Hello Halloween!Tricks, Treats and some spooky factsOrigins

The carving of pumpkins also originates from the Samhainfestival where turnips were carved to ward off spirits. When Irish immigrants arrived in North America in the 1840sthey couldn’t find any turnips so instead used pumpkins tocarve many a scary face.By the 1920s pumpkin carving was widespread across America, and Halloween had become a big holiday.

So what’s the pumpkin all about?

Halloween Competition

During the festival of Samhain the Celts would dress in whitewith blackened faces to trick the evil spirits they thought wereroaming the earth before All Saints' Day.By the 11th century, the Church had adapted this into atradition called 'souling', thought to be the origin of trick-or-treating. Children would dress as angels, demons or saints andcall door to door asking for sweet soul cakes in exchange forpraying for the souls of friends and relatives. The 19th century saw souling give way to guising or mumming;the children no longer offered prayers but instead songs,

poetry and jokes in exchange for fruit or money. The phrasetrick-or-treat was first used in America in 1927 when guisinggave way to threatening pranks in exchange for sweets.Halloween has now become a widespread custom thatrevolves around children with costumes that have becomemore varied and adventurous.Whether you decide to make an imaginative costume or go‘ready-made’ then Huntingdon has all you need to turn yourlittle monsters into, well, little monsters! From costumes to decorations, face paint to masks, and notforgetting the all-important pumpkin, check out the followingstores for ideas.
