VACUUM INSULATED, JACKETED, PIPING ( VIP, VJP )
OVERVIEWVacuum insulated piping is used in the cryogenics, industrial, and supply industries to reduce heat based losses in an ultra-low temperature liquid or gas. Ability Engineering Technology has over 30 years of experience building and designing transfer line systems. With such vast experience in the VJP industry, AET can help you through whatever your application may be.
KEY BENEFITS∙Low-Cost Installation and Maintenance∙Installation requires no cryogenic experience∙Can be built Modular∙Extremely Low Heat Leak (In Comparison to Foam Insulation)∙Eliminates frost and dripping, providing a safer environment∙Minimal to no loss of performance over ten years
SIZES AVAILABLEMany vacuum jacketed pipelines require some calculations to determine the proper inner and outer line diameters, but some common sizing of transfer lines that AET has provided can be seen below;∙0.5" Tube Process Line x 2" Pipe Vacuum Jacket∙1" Pipe Process Line x 3" Pipe Vacuum Jacket∙2" Pipe Process Line x 4" Pipe Vacuum Jacket∙3" Pipe Process Line x 5" Pipe Vacuum Jacket

Vacuum Pipe or Tube
Process Pipe or Tube
Vacuum Jacketed Pipe (AKA Vacuum Insulated Pipe or Cryogenic Piping) is utilized in systems that require the transfer of low boiling point liquids from point "A" to "B". The diagram (right) is a typical example of a cut-through vacuum jacketed pipe segment. The inner pipe or tube contains the process medium and is insulated with multiple layers of mylar-based insulation. There are low-heat leak spacers placed between the inner and outer tubes to keep them separated to avoid heat leaks via metal to metal transfer. The outer pipe would be fit with a pumpout port to remove air from the anular space and thus create a vacuum insulating area. Below is an example Vacuum Jacketed Piping Header System.

INDUSTRY TERMS
∙Flexible Sections - Typically Flexible Metal Hose, with or without braid, utilized in stress relief and minor alignment of a pipe segment.∙Vacuum Seal-Offs (Pump Outs) - Vacuum ports used to evacuate the insulating annular space between the inner and outer pipe or tube. This can also include a relief function to prevent damage to the outer line in case of failure.∙Bayonets (Cryogenic Couplings) - Low heat-leak connections to interface with further VJP or system components such as Cryostats, Dewars, or Refrigerators.
∙Multi-Layer Insulation - Insulating material to help mitigate effects of radiation heat-leak. ∙Low Heat Leak Spacers - Cryogenic Spacers designed to keep minimal contact between inner and outer lines, but maintain the annular space distance between them. They are also utilized in stress mitigation.∙Getter Pack - Getter Material affixed to a cold surface of the vacuum jacketed pipeline. This is utilized to absorb any outgassed moisture/impurities in the vacuum space, thus helping to maintain a better insulating vacuum.∙Heat Leak - Heat Leak is a term used to indicate an amount of heat, typically in BTUs, that is transferred to the components within the vacuum space.
