Prepare

Help out during the planning process of the reunion. When an idea is proposed, make sure your opinion is heard and that you listen to other’s opinions. If you have ideas, suggest them. Don’t be afraid to think and plan. Do not ignore the fact that there is an upcoming re-union. Be active and help plan. It is not a family reunion, it is your family reunion.

eunionA reunion can be both fun and

stressful. Here are a few tips that will help you have fun and enjoy

your next reunion.

Prepare for the expected. If you know that a certain family member always kids around, and you happen to be the main victim, do not expect him to change. Expect that he is going to do it again. Do not get mad. Family reunions do not hap-pen often, so relax.

If you need a mental break, take one. Excuse yourself politely and take a walk, sing, or do a relaxing activity to clear your mind.

By Yvette Franco

The most important tip is to be yourself. Do not be something that you are not. Do not act too cool or too smart. Be who you are and appreciate the moment and those around you.

The Sadie Hawkins Dance started as a result

as a comic strip created by Al Capp. Sadie Hawkins was 35 years old

and unmarried. Her father was worried about her never getting married so he created an event

where unmarried women chased bachelors in a race. If a woman catches a man and crosses the finish line with him, by

law they were to marry. The U.S. and Canada used this story to create a dance where the woman invited the man of her choice to attend. Here

are some examples of how students around school were asked to Sadies.

Different peo-ple came up to me with golf balls throughout the day. At the end

of the day, they spelled out “Sadies?” My date

came up to me with two balls, one saying “yes” and

other saying “no.” It was really creative and thoughtful of her. – Brent Spivey, senior

I made a scavenger

hunt throughout the school leav-ing different letters in different class-

rooms spelling out Sadie’s. He collected all the letters and at the very end, I had a sign that said “with me?” So when you put all the letters

together, it spelled out “Sadie’s with me?” – Samantha Rocha, junior

I had the water polo boys

kidnap Josh and take him to my house. I wrote “Josh...” with a

giant ques- tion mark on my driveway. There were arrows pointing to my backyard and I was back there with a Sadie’s poster.

– Allyson Borunda, junior

“She has to be silly” said Jeffrey Chang, junior.

“A girl that I can relate to and feel comfortable around.” said Christian Jimenez, senior.

“Personality and smile. That is what I’m attract-ed to,” said Elisa Cadena, junior.

Girls like...

“I like a guy that I can be myself around and that can make me laugh and respect me for who I am.” said Ariel Trujillo, junior.

As if you didn’t know...there are many differences between guys and girls, including their interests.

“I like my guys with a sense of humor and with a nice smile and eyes” said Melissa Fernandez, junior.

“A girl who can see beyond the outside and see what’s truly in one’s heart.” said Iban Cisneros, junior.

“A girl who can make me laugh and is not afraid to be herself,” said Julian Plata, junior.

“For my ask, I would gather a bouquet of balloons, telling the girl a message that I would love for her to know. Surprising her with her friends by my side is a creative way to show her I care.”

Kielthone Lim, senior

“I’d integrate a clever message into a riddle for him to find, because love is always a puzzle and he should know what he’s getting into.”

Alex Lopez, senior

“I would gather all her friends, make a scavenger hunt, make her go chasing random things till the last message, and I would be holding one of her favorite stuffed animals and straight out ask her on a date without hesitation.”

Erik Zamora, senior

Having trouble asking that special someone out for a night on the town? Here are some helpful and creative

ways for you to do so:

10

The It was March 2003. My boyfriend went to pick me up to meet up with his sister and her husband for dinner. We went to an Italian restaurant and ordered an appetizer. His sister called and told us that they were running late and that we should go ahead and order without them, which we did. My boyfriend then told me that he had written a poem and asked me if I would listen to it. I said yes and he started reading the poem. After about 3/4 of the poem had been read, I realized that he was propos-ing to me, since it said something about taking chances. While this was happening, an old lady next to our table overheard him reading the poem and said to her old friends, “Helen! He’s proposing!” They scooted their chairs to a position so that all of them could hear and see what was happening. I don’t think my boyfriend knew what was happening. When I heard the old lady tell her friends, the words turned into mumbling, like the teacher in Charlie Brown. He opened a ring case and proposed. I kept nodding my head, but he waited patiently for a yes, which I said after awhile. It

turns out it was all a set-up. His sister and her husband weren’t going to come. We then went to an engagement party after the din-ner at his friend’s house where his relatives and our friends were waiting.

It was a rainy night. My soon-to-be husband and I were walking past some of my favorite houses in my parents’ neighborhood. I thought this was just one of our usual walks

around the neighborhood. We were playing the question game. He asked, “Do you want an easy, medium, or hard question?” I answered, “Hard question.”

He got down on one knee. I didn’t know what was happening at the time, so I tried to get him to get back up so we could keep walking since it was raining. I thought he was tying his shoe, but then he proposed! When I heard him ask, I

kept asking him, “Are you sure? Are you sure?” He said yes, and I told him, “Well, that’s an easy question. Yes, I will!” Then we ran all the way back to my parents’

house to share the wonderful news.

One day I drove my soon-to-be wife to a pirate ship on a children’s playground in Ventura Beach. That was the first place where we talked about her being my girlfriend. Before all of this happened, I had secretly asked her parents for her hand

in marriage and learned a song. I brought out her favorite treats and we had a nice conversation. Then I bought out my guitar and sang her “She’s Got a Way” by Billy Joel. After the song, I pulled out a ring, got down on one knee, and proposed to her. She

said yes.

Afterward, we would catch a romantic movie in a theatre. Then we would end the night by innocently ‘trolling’ random strangers to get a good laugh. “So I wanted to do something extra special for my mom so I pulled off quite a diffi-cult little party. I called all of her friends secretively, made three dinner entrees all by myself, and decorated and cleaned the house for her. I paid everything out of my own pocket, but in the end, it was all worth it to see her so happy.”

Brandon Reed (12)

“I got a $50 bill on Christmas from a family

friend, but I gave it to my mom for helping me out during my earlier economic strug-

gles this year. The small gesture touched her heart, and it made my Christmas

that much greater.”

Alexis Andom (12)

“The craziest thing I have done for someone is hiding in their college room

closet to avoid getting caught by others. It was kind of scary being in there awhile, but

quite an exhilarating experience!”

June Wu (12)

“I went to see my girlfriend

at school one day, but the security guard wouldn’t let me in because I didn’t have a student ID. I decided to climb over the fence to go see her. I also had to climb the fence to get back out.The risk was worth it because I got to see her.”

Capricorns are known for wanting to achieve and build their way to the top, but is that getting in the way of a relationship? Instead of being the one to call the shots, step off your pedestal and love will come knocking on your door. Let’s just say February is full of surprises.

The need for knowledge never fades in an Aquarius. Whether the knowledge be from the latest textbook or gossip stream, you’re never out of the loop. Be careful, though, or you might come across something you may or may not want to hear from the person you admire the most.

This new year marks the beginning of something new, or rather somebody new. You’ll come to accept new and liberating pasttimes and meet someone worth your while. Who knows, maybe when you’re out and about trying something new you’ll stumble across a new romantic figure in your life.

You’ve worked hard to maintain what you have, and now it’s time to call it a year and relax. In the next few months, expect a wave of serenity and you’ll discover someone that’s been there all along, but you were just too busy to notice. With all the time you’ve spent working hard, you’ll enjoy this change of pace.

Always the life of the party, you know how to get down and really have fun. People swarm to your naturally charismatic nature and easy-going appeal, but could this also be the reason people push you away? This year you might lose someone you care about, but look out for the signs before it’s too late.

With all the things you have going on around you, you’ve learned how to multi-task and keep your life in a delicate balance. However, a new figure in your life will disrupt this balance. Good or bad, it will be your choosing. Just don’t forget about your friends while encountering this new love.

You’re always giving respect, but receiving none in return. This year you’re going to change that and teach everyone you’re capable of ruling your life. This new found confidence will be the final push, and that person who admires you from afar will gather the courage to finally talk to you.

The need for security and stability is ever present in your heart. You’re not looking for a one time fling, but a serious counterpart with whom you can protect and live out your dreams. Have a keen eye over the next few weeks and a light will shine over the person who can be that somebody.

You don’t like to be tied down, and the word “commitment” makes you shudder. Having the need to be independent shields you from accepting another person’s feelings. Drop the independent act and the vulnerable side you hide will finally show everyone you’re not as stone-hearted as they think.

Diligence is something you live by, and when you’re dead-set on something, you get what you want by any means necessary. Instead of worrying about your studies, take a day off, relax, and you might just find someone who shares equal interests with you.

SagittariusNovember 24-December 21

ScorpioOctober 24-November 23

True to your control-freak attitude, you have the need to steer clear of every aspect of your life, including your love life. When something goes wrong, you’re quick to influence others on the issue, which doesn’t really give you points in any love category. This year you’ll transform and love won’t be so unattainable anymore.

Once February rolls around, you’ll be exploring new territory to satisfy your thrill seeking nature. Although the journey might be tough at first, someone, new or old, will be there to help you on your journey. Unbeknownst to you, sparks will fly, but it’s your choice as to whether you see them or not.

Dear Los Altos Conquerors:

Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s a new year and a start of new beginnings for most of us. This new semester is like a breath of fresh air, and hopefully you can relax a little. With half the year already gone, time will fly by so fast that before you know it, it’s summer. Oh, and before we forget to mention it, there are fewer than 100 days left of school! As obvious as it may seem, this edition was themed specifically for Valentine’s Day and all the surprises it carries. As editors, we always want to please our peers with what we create as we try to consider aspects that everyone finds interesting. Valentine’s Day is not just for couples looking to have a day of romance, but it is also the start of new relationships and beginnings. That sole idea is what encouraged us to publish and create this edition of A La Mode, and we hope that it is evident as you flip through our pages.

We would like to take the time to thank all the people who make our publica-tions possible, from our journalism staff, to Mr. Rockwood, and to all the students who take the time to actually read what we create. Without you, this magazine wouldn’t be possible. A La Mode has grown greatly over the year, and you can expect it to continue to flourish for years to come. Being able to be a part of that growth has taught us so many things and also showed us how hard work pays off. Although we endured many struggles as editors, we can be proud to say we wouldn’t exchange the experience for anything. As the year goes on, it’s a wonder to think that soon we seniors will be leaving and moving on to much bigger things in life. High school was merely the stepping stone to get us where we need to be in the future. So thank you for accompanying us on our journey as maga-

zine editors.

Love always, Judy Samatmanakit, Amber Alvela, Brenda Pham
