The Thanksgiving Day debate Thanksgiving has been an American tradi-

tion since the colonies were being settled butit was not an official, annual holiday until1863, when during the Civil War, PresidentAbraham Lincoln proclaimed a national dayof "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficentFather who dwelleth in the Heavens," to becelebrated on Thursday, Nov. 26.

Abraham Lincoln’s successors followed hisexample of annually declaring the finalThursday in November to be Thanksgiving. But in 1939, President Franklin D. Rooseveltbroke with this tradition. November had fiveThursdays that year (instead of the more-common four), and Roosevelt declared thefourth Thursday as Thanksgiving rather thanthe fifth one. With the country still in themidst of The Great Depression, Rooseveltthought an earlier Thanksgiving would givemerchants a longer period to sell goods beforeChristmas. Increasing profits and spendingduring this period, Roosevelt hoped, wouldhelp bring the country out of the Depression. At the time, advertising goods for Christmasbefore Thanksgiving was considered inappro-priate. But Republicans decried the change, calling it an affront to the memory of Lincoln.People began referring to Nov. 30 as the“Republican Thanksgiving” and Nov. 23 asthe “Democratic Thanksgiving” or“Franksgiving.”

On Oct. 6, 1941, both houses of the U.S.Congress passed a joint resolution fixing thetraditional last-Thursday date for the holiday. However, in December of that year the Senatepassed an amendment to the resolution thatsplit the difference by requiring thatThanksgiving be observed annually on thefourth Thursday of November, which wassometimes the last Thursday and sometimes(less frequently) the next to last. The amend-ment passed the U.S. House, and on Dec. 26,1941 President Roosevelt signed this bill, forthe first time making the date ofThanksgiving a matter of federal law and fix-ing the day as the fourth Thursday ofNovember. However, for several years somestates continued to observe the last-Thursday date in years with five NovemberThursdays (the next such year being 1944),with Texas doing so as late as 1956.

Hello Again,November 17, 2012

My annual goose watch is nearly over. Last Saturday one of our fellow Hello Again readers

ran out of Stewart’s as I was backing away, pointing and yelling, “There go your geese.” Sure

enough, a sky full of geese traveling east along the south side of our valley. Hundreds, if not

thousands of geese in several V formations were up there enjoying our valley.

Turkeys don’t fly in a gaggle formation so I guess my next sky watch will be for Old Saint

Nick and his reindeer. We can be sure Rudolph with his red nose will be up there in the lead if

he’s not too old. In my mind’s ear I can still hear Gene Autry, the famous singing movie

cowboy, singing “Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, had a very shiny nose.”

I imagine wise old Santa already knows to stay away from the airspace over the thruway.

With all of the trips he has to make, the thruway would put Christmas gift giving out of

business if the thruway authorities considered Santa’s sleigh as a truck. Maybe Santa with

his flying sled will fall under a federal government outreach program and will borrow money

from China to support Rudolph and his friends. See — we never have to lose hope.

If we could gather around the old chunk stove at Charlie Hearn’s general store one more

time, what tales we could spin. Our so-called modern way of life has changed so much our

chatter about the good old days would sound like a barrel of blarney fresh from the old

country. Pat and Mike would have a field day in that group.

What do you think the original group of farmers and townsmen would say if you tried to

convince them that all of the family owned shops along Main Street USA would no longer be

there. Huge chain stores would force them out of business, selling clothes, appliances, and

what-have-you’s manufactured in China, Japan, Taiwan, and countries all over the world —

everywhere, but not in the USA or with American labor. To top it off, you would have to drive

your car for 20-30 miles, not a three minute drive or walk down to Main Street. Burn up to

three gallons of gas at $4.00+ per gallon, park in a four acre parking lot, walk three hundred

feet to the store entrance, find a cart, walk another two hundred to three hundred feet while

in the store, stand in line at the cashier, wait for five minutes while they do a price check. All

of this to purchase a product made in China which drove a family member out of work. But

you can pay for it with your credit card.

Don’t stand around doing nothing unless you want your neighbors to think you have a

government job.

Our original printing press was so un-modern, the rainbow had to be printed in black and

white.

A pathway to easy riches: When a socialist says he became rich through hard work, ask

him whose hard work and write a book about it.

A few years ago when I first became interested in writing, “Hello Again,” I was told to never

refer to anyone as poor — they were needy. Then I was told it was defeating to use the word

needy, they were merely deprived. After a bit I learned that under-privileged was politically

wrong. Disadvantaged would be more acceptable. I still don’t pretend to write politically

correct but I am gaining a great vocabulary. I ask — is a bum still a bum or is he

disadvantaged? If such a person refuses gainful employment, what should we call him?

Page 7: Valley Pennysaver 11.17.12

Maybe…smarter than you and me!

A young dad said his education is growing in leaps and bounds now that he is doing his

kids homework while they watch T.V.

An agriculture agent was heard saying to a young farmer, “Before you tackle that field you

should spend time thinking about it.” His father, an old-time farmer said, “You’ll never plow

that field by turning it over in your mind.”

To not teach your kids to work is like teaching them to steal.

A world of caution to our local parents: The Amsterdam Police Department has reported

that a drug probe of the highest magnitude was successfully carried out this past week.

For this we can say a loud thank you to all of the participating law enforcement agencies.

Moms and Dads, be very watchful. Don’t let the drug pedaling bums get near your children.

During the past presidential race I learned that a candidate did not have to be concerned

with telling the truth. The liberal news media would not judge or correct, but smooth it over

with two-sided blarney. Remember those great words, “To tell the truth, the whole truth, and

nothing but the truth, so help you God?”

What has higher minimum wages accomplished? I can think of two things. A lot of people

no longer have a job at all so they have learned how to live happily ever after on the dole.

High school and college students cannot find a job at all due to the too high salary

dictated by the government, so they grow into adults with their own pockets empty and

their hands in someone else’s. Is this a good way to train our youth?

Remember some of your mothers or grandmothers pet saying? Such as, “A stitch in time

saves nine” or “it takes less time to do the job right the first time than to do it over?”

How about this one? Instead of only saying to a friend in financial need, “I’ll pray for you,”

reach into your pocket, hand him a ten spot and quietly pray for him. This is when “action

speaks louder than words.”

On the way home to St. Johnsville I passed a farmer with a three-horse team plowing and

preparing the field for a crop to be planted next spring. Every furrow was turned over

properly. It was obvious the man takes pride in his work and was taught how to do the job

the correct way. He is a neighbor we can be proud of. Keep up the good work, neighbor. Our

country, especially our young, need to learn from men like you.

You know how a cup of hot cider and a bowl of popcorn makes you feel warm and thankful?

When you say hello to a neighbor, it produces the same results and

when you talk over one of his problems with the Lord, your prayer will

automatically add the appreciated butter.

Put on your long john’s and button up the back flap. Let’s chat again

next week. Winter is on its way.

In lumbering, Cant Hooks— also known as Cant Dogs— are used to roll logs. Themetal arm is pulled open (asshown below) and hookedaround the circumference of alog. The lumberjack theneither pulls or pushes thewooden bar as leverage, effec-tively jolting a stuck log looseor gently rolling logs along anintended path.

This particular Cant Hookwas patented on Aug. 24,1869 by Peter Schultz ofRockwood, NY. It is presumedthat this one was a sales-

man’s sample, as it is smallerthan a typical Cant Hookshould be. The wooden bar ona Cant Hook should be aboutfive feet long.

A Cant Hook is a commonlyused tool in both the loggingand timber industries. It isused to pry stuck logs loose,to help load wood into a vehi-cle for transport or to stacklogs in a pile. It also serves asa method of controlling the

travel of logs through a pro-cessing machine or body ofwater and allows workers toclear jams while staying clearof the logs.

Workers in lumber yardsand sawmills are not the onlyusers of the tool. It can befound in the collection of con-tractors; also many landown-ers and farmers may keep aCant Hook on hand for mov-ing firewood or fallen trees.

For many, shopping onBlack Friday has becomeas much of a Thanksgiv-ing tradition as turkey, with friends and familieswhipping up a shoppingstrategy along with thedressing and gravy.

The National Founda-tion for Credit Counselingadvises consumers toshop smart by planningahead. Here are five stepsconsumers should takebefore hitting the storesto enjoy their post-Thanksgiving shoppingexcursion without harm-ing their pocketbook.

1. Beware of specialcredit-card offers — Is-suers are tempting con-sumers by offering incen-tives such as no-interest

balance transfers, extraperks by meeting certainspending levels, and in-creased cash back inspecified categories. How-ever, no deal is a gooddeal if you can’t afford it.Commit to spending nomore than what you canrepay in full when the billarrives, regardless of howmany bonuses are tackedon.

2. Know what you al-ready owe — Review allexisting debt obligations, tallying what you’ve al-ready spent and commit-ted to repay. This realitycheck may put a tempo-rary damper on your hol-iday mood, but that’s bet-ter than digging the fi-nancial hole even deeper.

3. Create a plan —Knowing who you’reshopping for, what itemsyou hope to find and, most importantly, howmuch you intend tospend is critical to a suc-cessful shopping day.Commit in advance tostick to your plan, andenlist an accountabilitypartner if necessary, asit’s very easy to be caughtup in the excitement ofthe moment and get offcourse.

4. Find the best dealsat home — Shop fromhome before heading forthe stores. Compareprices online, as well aslocal circulars for sales inyour area. Be aware oftime restrictions, as some

prices may only applyduring certain time peri-ods throughout the day.Once the actual shoppingbegins, going directly tothe store that has youritem at a good price willsave you time, gas, mon-ey and frustration.

5. Remove all unneces-sary cards from your wal-let — Spreading purchas-es across multiple cardsmakes you feel as thoughyou’re charging less andcan trick you into over-spending. Designate onecard for holiday spend-ing, and remove all othersfrom your wallet. This willnot only help you staywithin your budget, butalso will lessen the dam-age in case of loss or

theft.“It is important for con-

sumers to shop with theirhead, not their heart,”said NFCC representativeGail Cunningham.“Preparing in advance

will help you stick to yourbudget, in spite of thedecorations, carols andSanta himself beckoningyou to spend.”

Don’t get caught up in Black Friday frenzy

For the 133 million Americans living with chronicconditions, the best holiday gift is something that willmake navigating the daily routine easier. Sweaters, pajamas, candy and perfume are all nice, traditionaland thoughtful gifts for the compromised, but if youwant to really show you care about their well-being,check out your local pharmacy for gifts they’ll useevery day.

“It’s very sad to see patients receive gifts of expen-sive perfume or cardigans that they’ll never enjoy be-cause they can’t open the bottle or unbutton the but-tons,” said Debbie Jansky of Home Health Services atLoyola Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Illinois.

Here are her top 10 picks for holiday gifts that willbe used and appreciated every day.

• Medication Organizers ($1.50-$10): Help Grandmakeep track of her pills. Available in all sizes (daily, weekly) and shapes, they will give the whole family

peace of mind that the right pill is being taken at theright time.

• Pill Cutter ($3): Many pills and tablets need to behalved or quartered. These handy tools offer precisecutting with minimal effort.

• Pill Punch ($8): Easily pushes an individual pillthrough sealed card packaging that those with arthri-tis have trouble manipulating.

• ID Bracelet ($7 and up): Alerts medics to importantmedical information such as allergies to penicillin, congestive heart failure or diabetes.

• Item Grabber ($28): This sturdy claw-like handtool can be used to retrieve the box of crackers fromthe top shelf or a slipper that got kicked too far underthe couch.

• Adjustable cane ($27): This handsome black canecompresses to a 5-inch-long stick — much like a col-lapsible umbrella. Discreetly placed in a purse or coat

pocket, it can be quickly and easily assembled to pro-vide support when needed.

• Medicool ($45): Keep insulin or other medicationscool and organized for easy application.

• Rollator ($160): A luxurious walker with high-quality wheels and brakes, with a basket for shoppingand a handy bench to stop and rest.

• Compression stockings ($12-$124): Helps increaseblood circulation in legs and provide comfort.

• Sock donner ($25): Makes putting on socks orcompression hose a breeze, and helps to increase in-dependence in dressing.

• Accessible bathroom aids ($27-$100): Handheldwater sprayers, toilet seat benches and bathtub safe-ty rails may look insignificant in their box, but installthem in the bathroom, and you’ll creat a safe haventhat will be used regularly.

When exposed to coldtemperatures, your bodybegins to lose heat fasterthan it can be produced.Prolonged exposure tocold will eventually use upyour body’s stored energy. The result is hypothermia,or abnormally low bodytemperature. Body tem-perature that is too low af-fects the brain, makingthe victim unable to thinkclearly or move well. Thismakes hypothermia par-ticularly dangerous be-cause a person may notknow it is happening andwon’t be able to do any-thing about it.

Hypothermia is mostlikely at very cold temper-atures, but it can occureven at cool temperatures(above 40°F) if a personbecomes chilled fromrain, sweat, or submer-sion in cold water.

Victims of hypothermiaare often (1) elderly peo-ple with inadequate food, clothing, or heating; (2)babies sleeping in coldbedrooms; (3) people whoremain outdoors for longperiods — the homeless, hikers, hunters, etc.; and(4) people who drink alco-

hol or use illicit drugs.Recognizinghypothermia

Warnings signs of hy-pothermia:

Adults:• shivering, exhaustion• confusion, fumbling

hands• memory loss, slurred

speech• drowsinessInfants:• bright red, cold skin• very low energyWhat to DoIf you notice any of

these signs, take the per-son’s temperature. If it isbelow 95°, the situationis an emergency — getmedical attention imme-diately.

If medical care is notavailable, begin warmingthe person, as follows:

• Get the victim into awarm room or shelter.

• If the victim has onany wet clothing, removeit.

• Warm the center ofthe body first — chest, neck, head, and groin —using an electric blanket,if available. Or use skin-to-skin contact underloose, dry layers of blan-

kets, clothing, towels, orsheets.

• Warm beverages canhelp increase the bodytemperature, but do notgive alcoholic beverages.Do not try to give bever-ages to an unconsciousperson.

• After body tempera-ture has increased, keepthe person dry andwrapped in a warm blan-ket, including the headand neck.

• Get medical attentionas soon as possible.

A person with severehypothermia may be un-conscious and may notseem to have a pulse or tobe breathing. In thiscase, handle the victimgently, and get emer-gency assistance immedi-ately. Even if the victimappears dead, CPRshould be provided. CPRshould continue while thevictim is being warmed, until the victim respondsor medical aid becomesavailable. In some cases, hypothermia victims whoappear to be dead can besuccessfully resuscitated.
