What would you learn from reading the August 4, 1966 weekly St. Johnsville Enterprise newspaper? Peg

Davis celebrated a birthday on August 9th. The community theater marquee was advertising a movie. James

Stewart and Maureen O’Hara were starring in “The Rare Breed,” a western, plus Elvis in “It Happened at the

World’s Fair.”

The same August 4th edition carried the obituary of Charles Gee, 71, of 9 Ann Street, St. Johnsville, who

died July 29th in Little Falls Hospital.

It appears Mr. Gee came to St. Johnsville from Weldon, Illinois in 1934 and from then on until 1941 was the

proprietor of the C & M Forwarding Company, at that time one of the larger firms hauling autos from Great

Lakes ports to the eastern seaboard dealers.

From the son of one of the C & M drivers, Harold Estes, native of St. Johnsville, we learned that Gee owned

54 large auto transport trucks. Each truck would carry 4 new cars, which meant 216 new autos. Assuming

each truck delivered two loads each week for 52 weeks, the Gee trucks were responsible for over 22,400 new

autos each year.

The St. Johnsville C & M Forwarding Company’s specialty was one of the finest cars manufactured in the

U.S., the Packard. Not everyone could afford such a fine automobile. As a boy I remember some of the Packards.

During the 1930’s, the Packard was a large car with a distinctive chrome front grill, bright red diamond-shaped

insignia or logo on all of the wheels. Naturally the tires were large and white-walled. Today one of those

beauties would be any man’s dream.

I was unable to locate a suitable picture of a 1934 Packard. The year Mr. Gee’s forwarding company

started in St. Johnsville.

era. This model 1006 was

equipped with a 160 BHP, 445

CU, inside a V12 engine. In 2003

it was valued at $475,000 to

$575,000.

Can you imagine that our little

hamlet of St. Johnsville played

such a major role in the national

automotive industry?

Now it’s 2013 and the front page of the Marketplace section of the world famous Wall Street Journal

salutes a “Re-birth of a famous name – the Stingray Corvette.”

Chief Executive Dan Akerson stated, “We want to reinforce the fact that it is a halo product and tie it

closely to the Chevrolet brand. In other words, to Americans and worldwide to get prospective auto buyers

talking favorably about Chevrolets. This concept has always helped to build a products share in the market

place.

On a real positive side of the GM auto picture, GM executives have stated they believe the U.S. government

will place their GM stock back on the stock market. I’m not in favor of either our state or federal government

owning an important number of shares of stock in any corporation. I do believe there are numerous ways a

government can aid a company without becoming an owner – for example – loans with proper guarantees.

An exponent of the power of positive thinking was stressing his point when a member of his class cut in and

said, “I believe that opportunity does knock sometimes…but most of the time at our home and especially at

mealtime. It’s another lousy salesperson.”


Speaking of taking advantage of an opportunity, a thrifty shopper, after checking out at the grocery

cashier, returned to the cashier and said, “You gave me the wrong change.”

The checkout girl said, “How long ago did this happen?”

After the woman said it happened about 20 minutes ago, the checkout girl pointed to the sign that read,

“All errors in change must be reported at the time of checkout or they will not be corrected…Management.”

The shopper said, “You mean I’m too late?” “I’m afraid so.” “All right,” she said, walking out. “Too late is too

late. I just wanted you to know you gave me $10 too much change.”

A couple of hot air balloonists were cruising over the countryside and had no idea of their location. Finally,

they were able to land in a farm field and hiked out to the road where they spotted a man on a bicycle

eyeing the strange-looking apparatus in the field.

“Where are we?” asked one of the balloonists. “You’re in a field,” the guy on the bike replied. The other balloonist

then asked, “You don’t happen to be an accountant, do you?” “Why, yes, I am,” the bicyclist responded. “How did

you know?” “Well, the balloonist answered, “your answer was absolutely correct, but totally useless.”

I know how the balloonist felt. Our company utilizes both staff accountants and an outside accounting firm

to furnish us with information – that we sometimes wish we didn’t know anything about.

While the Packard Twelve was setting a standard for the classic expensive era, Henry Ford’s son Edsel of

the Ford Motor Car Company was forging ahead with the introduction and mass production of two Ford

models with their own classic look – the Ford Model A Coupe and the more classic 1934 Ford V-8-Phaeton.

trend-setting line of Packard

classic cars, GM’s recent

announcement of the new 2014

Corvette utilizing the well

remembered and respected

name Stingray, to point out

that business success can

enjoy a short life or history-

making longevity. Such

decisions are always in the

hands of people. C & M

Forwarding and Packard, for

unknown reasons, chose to

retire from the business world

while General Motors and the Ford Motor Company found ways to change – grow – and forge ahead to become

giants. Both of these giants, on several occasions, had severe problems and could both have chosen to quit.

While the Palatine Corridor area dream seems to be faltering, I believe we can find new ways to become

better than ever.

I’m looking out of our office windows – it’s snowing. Part of me wants to write

“that awful snow” while I’m sure I should write, “Boy, that snow is awfully purty.”

Regardless how we temporarily think, God is not a temporary Heavenly Father. He

was always there and always will be. We can and should have complete trust and

faith in him. Stay happy until next time – now you can turn the TV on. So long, and

may God be with you, your family, and friends.

Snowshoeing is a win-tertime activity that canbe enjoyable and healthyfor all ages.

Enthusiasts say thatsnowshoeing is truly anactivity that anyone canenjoy — from children toseniors. As long as a per-son is able to walk, he orshe can also try snow-shoeing. According to re-search provided bySnowsports IndustriesAmerica, 40.8 percent ofsnowshoers are women,9.4 percent of snowshoersare children (ages 7 to11), and 44.2 percent ofsnowshoers are betweenthe ages of 25 to 44.

There are a number ofreasons to try snowshoe-ing:

• It is a relatively inex-pensive sport to try be-cause there is limitedequipment and most of itcan be rented.

• Snowshoeing providesa unique perspective onthe outdoors.

• The activity is a greatform of cardiovascularexercise, as the shoe andthe snow provide an

added measure of resist-ance while walking. Thesport helps burn morethan 600 calories perhour and can help youburn 45 percent morecalories than walking orrunning at the samespeed.

• Snowshoeing is easilya social group activity.

• It poses little risk forinjury.

One of the main advan-tages to snowshoeing isthat oftentimes the firsttime you head out you’veeasily grasped the con-cept. Unlike other sportsthat take practice to mas-ter, snowshoeing only re-quires a few steps beforeit is mastered.

Snowshoeing has beenaround for thousands ofyears. Archaeologistshave not been able to de-termine when the snow-shoe was first used, but itis known that snowshoeswere used more than12,000 years ago. It is be-lieved the first snowshoewas made from solidwood and animal skins.Natives of North America

relied on a form of snow-shoe to traverse the land-scape during hunting andother chores.

Although the firstsnowshoe designs weremade from what peoplecould find and were prim-itive in nature, they setthe course for more intri-cate designs and high-tech materials.

When selecting snow-shoes, beginners canchoose among recreation-al snowshoes. Usually,these snowshoes workbest on simple terrainthat doesn’t require a lotof steep climbing or de-scents. For avid snow-shoers or those who com-pete, aerobic snowshoesor ones designed for hik-ing are more durable andmay be the smart buy.

Many experts adviseagainst purchasing usedsnowshoes, because youwon’t be sure what you’regetting. Snowshoes canbe rented, but they arerelatively inexpensive tobuy new, ranging from$100 to $300. Snowshoesare sized according to

your weight. The mostcommon sizes are 25, 30and 36 inches. Workingwith an educated retailerwill ensure you get the

right size shoe.Snowshoeing can be

done anywhere there issnow. It doesn’t requiremarked trails. Just be

sure to go with a partnerthe first time around toensure safety should youget stuck out in thewilderness.

Adventures in snowshoeing

If you see ice build-up and icicles hanging from the eaves of your home, you mayhave an ice dam, a major cause of roof leaks and energy loss in winter. Take stepsnow to prevent ice dams, recommends the New York State Energy Research andDevelopment Authority (NYSERDA).

Ice dams usually occur after a heavy snowfall and several days of freezing tem-peratures. Warm air inside your home leaks into the attic and warms the under-side of the roof, causing snow and ice on the roof to melt. The melted water drainsalong the roof to the cold overhang and refreezes, forming an ice dam and icicles.The ice dam enables the trapped water to get under the roof shingles, causing wa-ter to leak inside.

If you already have an ice dam problem, hire an expert to solve the immediate is-sue. Don’t climb on your roof, and avoid standing on the ground and “chippingaway” at the ice. Not only could your chipping damage the roof, but you can be se-riously injured by falling ice, debris or tools.

NYSERDA recommends the following ice dam prevention tips:Seal air leaks and take care of insulation and ventilation.• Seal air leaks and duct air leaks in your attic to stop warm air leakage, the

source of ice dam problems. After sealing leaks, add additional insulation in yourattic.

• Provide adequate attic ventilation so the undersides of the roof and outside airare at the same temperature. Check to make sure attic insulation is not blockingroof ventilation. Incorrect ventilation can cause mold and mildew problems.

Clean gutters.• If you didn’t clean leaves and other debris from gutters before the first snow,

see if you can have it done now. This will help prevent ice build-up in gutters.Hire a participating contractor.• Hire a participating Home Performance contractor accredited through the

Building Performance Institute (BPI) to conduct an in-home comprehensive energyassessment. The comprehensive home energy assessment will not only suggestspecific home improvements to prevent future ice dams, but will also recommendways to reduce energy use, save money and improve the health and safety of yourhome.

• This “whole house” approach can cut total energy costs by up to 40 percent,saving a homeowner up to $700 annually. NYSERDA provides financial incentivesand financing options with low interest rates to help pay for energy efficiency im-provements.

So why not resolve to take better care of your car and drive smarter? All your res-olutions depend on it! Here are 13 tips provided by the Car Care Council for 2013that will help with your resolutions:

1. Get regular oil changes since they are your best investment toward thelongevity of the engine.

2. Get regular brake inspections which are the best way to ensure safe and reli-able breaking and minimize the cost of repairs when break service is needed.

3. Make sure your gas cap is secure and tight. A loose gas cap can trigger the“Check Engine” or “service Engine Soon” light.

4. Ensure your tires are properly inflated. Proper tire inflation can improve gasmileage by more than 3 percent when maintained regularly.

5. Get regular alignment checks — they are your best way to maximize tire lifeand ensure that your car performs on the road as originally designed.

6. Get routine tune-ups and engine performance checks — they can be your bestassurance of good performance and fuel economy. A healthy running engine max-imizes the life of expensive emission system components.

7. Frequent washing and polishing is the best way to protect your car’s finishfrom the damaging effects of acid rain.

8. You should check the condition of the coolant each spring and fall to makesure the additives that protect against corrosion still function.

9. Have any suspicions of a leak checked out at once. Carbon monoxide fromyour car’s exhaust is odorless, colorless-and lethal.

10. Try to replace your car’s fuel filter every two years or 24,000 miles for best results.11. During normal driving, you may not notice a light that isn’t working; inspect

your car’s lights at every oil change.12. You should test your battery every fall. If your car’s battery is three years old

or more, consider replacing it since the chances of failure increase.13. Improper ride height of your car can impact alignment angles and cause pre-
