ocultureandtheclassroomsmustbecomesecondhomes.TheroleoftheteachertooisveryimportanTheeducatorneedstobelievethathe/sheisasecondparentandplaytheroleofapeacemaker.

TheIndianStudentspledgeisaninspiringoathtotaketoheartintheinculcationoftheseValues:

IndiaismycountryandallIndiansaremybrothersandsisters.IlovemycountryandIamproudofitsrichandvariedheritage.

Ishallalwaysstrivetobeworthyofit.Ishallgiverespecttomyparents,teachersandelders

andtreateveryonewithcourtesy.Tomycountryandmypeople,Ipledgemydevotion.

Intheirwellbeingandprosperityalone,liesmyhappiness.Werecall thewordsofMrs.SoniaGandhi,Iwant toemphasize thatacountry thathasbeenbuilton th

interminglingofdifferentcultures,religions,faiths,languagesandcommunitiescannotallowitshistorytob

distorted and misappropriated for partisan purposes. Our past must foster pride, not prejudic

OldAntoniopointsatamacawcrossingintheafternoonsky."Look,"hesays.I

seethebrilliantstreakofcolours inthegraymistofagatheringrain."Youwouldn'tbelieveonebird

couldhavesomanycolours,"IsayasIcometothetopofthehill.

OldAntoniositsdownonahillsidewherethemudisn'tspillingontothemainroad.Hecatcheshis

breathwhileherollsanothercigarette.A fewsteps furtheron, Isee thathe's lingeredbehind. Igo

backandsitdownbesidehim.WhileI'mlightingmypipe,Iaskhim,"Doyouthinkwe'llgettothevil

lagebefore the rain starts?"OldAntoniodoesn'tseem tohearme.This time, it'sa flockof toucans

that'sdistractedhim.Thecigaretteinhishandiswaitingtobelittostartitslazydesignofsmoke.He

clearshis throat, lights the cigarette,makeshimselfas comfortableashe canand slowlybeginshis

story.

"Themacawdidn'tusedtobelikethis.Ithardlyhadanycolouratall.Itwasjustgray.Itsfeatherswere

stunted,likeawetchickenjustonemorebirdamongalltheotherswhodidn'tknowhowhearrivedin

theworld.Thegodsthemselvesdidn'tknowwhomadethebirds.OrWhy.

"Andthat'sthewayitwas.thegodswokeupafterNightandsaidtoDay,'Okay,that'sitformeyour

turn.'Andthemenandwomenweresleepingortheyweremakinglove,whichisanicewaytobecome

tiredandthengotosleep.

"Thegodswerefighting.Theywerealwaysfighting.Theywereveryquarrelsome,thesegods,notlike

the firstones, the seven godswhogavebirth to theworld, the very firstones.And thegodswere

fightingbecausetheworldwasveryboringwithonlytwocolourstopaintit.

"And theangerof thegodswasa trueangerbecauseonly the twocolours took their turnswith the

world: theblackwhichruled thenightand thewhitewhichstrolledaboutduring theday.Andthere

wasathirdwhichwasn'tarealcolour.Itwasthegraywhichpaintedthedusksandthedawnssothat

theblackandthewhitedidn'tbumpintoeachothersohard.

"Andthesegodswerequarrelsomebutwise.Theyhadameetingandtheyfinallyagreedtomakemore

colours.Theywantedtomake itmorejoyousformenandwomenwhowereblindasbats totakea

walkortomakelove.

"Oneofthegodstooktowalkingsothathecouldthinkbetter.Andhethoughthis

thought sodeeply thathedidn't lookwherehewas going.Andhe trippedona

stone so big that he hit his head and started to bleed. "And the god, after

"Afterthat,anothergodlookedforacolourtopaintthefeelingofhope.Hefoundit,thoughittookhima

while,andhewenttoshowittotheassemblyofgodsandtheynamedthiscolourgreen,thefourthcolour.

"Anotheronestartedtodigdeepintotheearth.'Whatareyoudoing?'askedtheothergods.'I'mtryingtofind

theheartoftheearth,'heanswered,throwingdirtallovertheplace.Intime,hearrivedattheheartoftheearth

andshowedittotheothergodsandtheycalledthisfifthcolourbrown.

"Anothergodwentstraightupwards.'Iwanttoseewhatcolourtheworldis,'hesaidandkeptclimbingalltheway

up.Whenhegotveryhighup,helookeddownandsawthecolouroftheworld,buthedidn'tknowhowtobring

ittowheretheothergodsweresohekeptlookingforalongwhileuntilhebecameblind,becausethecolourof

theworldstucktohiseyes.Hecamedownasbesthecould,byfitsandstarts,andhearrivedwheretheassembly

ofgodswasandsaidtothem,'Iamcarryingthecolouroftheworldinmyeyes,'andtheynamedthesixthcol

ourblue.

"Anothergodwaslookingforcolourswhenheheardachildlaughing.Hesnuckuponthechildquietlyand,when

thechildwasn'tpayingattention,thegodsnatchedhislaughandlefthimintears.That'swhytheysaythatchil

drencanbelaughingoneminuteandallofasuddentheyarecrying.Thegodstolethechild'slaughandtheycalled

thisseventhcolouryellow.

"Bynowthegodsweretiredandtheydranksomepozolandwenttosleep,leavingthecoloursinalittlebox

whichtheythrewbeneaththeceiba tree.Thelittleboxwasn'tclosedverytightandthecoloursescapedand

startedtoplayhappilyandtomakelovetooneanother,andmoreanddifferentcoloursweremade,newones.

Theceibatreelookedatthemandcoveredthemalltokeeptherainfromwashingthecoloursaway,and

whenthegodscameback;thereweren'tjustsevencoloursbutmanymore.Theylookedattheceibatreeand

said,'yougavebirthtothecolours.Youwilltakecareoftheworld.Andfromthetopofyourheadweshall

painttheworld.'

"Andtheyclimbedtothetopoftheceibatree,andfromtheretheystartedtoflingthecoloursalloverthe

place,andthebluestayedpartlyintheskyandpartlyinthewater,thegreenfellontheplantsandthetrees,

andthebrown,which washeavier,felltotheground,andtheyellow,whichwasthechild'slaugh,flewup

topaintthesun.Thereddroppedintothemouthsofmenandanimalsandtheyateitandpaintedthem

selves inside.Andtheblack andthewhitewere,ofcourse,alreadyintheworld.Anditwasamessthe

waythegodsthrewthecoloursbecausetheydidn'tcarewherethecolourslanded.Somecolourssplat

teredonthemenandwomen,andthatiswhytherearepeoplesofdifferentcoloursanddifferentwaysof

thinking."Andsoonthegodsgottiredandwenttosleepagain.Thesegodsjustwantedtosleep.Theyweren'tlikethe

firstones,theoneswhogavebirthtotheworld.Andthen,becausetheydidn'twanttoforgetthecoloursorlosethem,

theylookedforawaytokeepthemsafe."Andtheywerethinkingaboutthatintheirheartswhenthey

sawthemacaw,andtheygrabbeditandstartedtopourallthecoloursonitandtheystretchedits

featherssothatthecolourscouldallfit.Andthatwashowthemacawtookholdofthecolours,andsoit

goesstruttingaboutjustincasemenandwomenforgothowmanycoloursthereareandhowmany

waysofthinking,andthattheworldwillbehappyifallthecoloursandwaysofthinkinghavetheirplace.
