gang

rapes,

has

left

apain

and

adark

spot

on

the

very

fabric

of

society

the

family!

Social

activ

ists took to the streets demandingjustice and to fast track thejudicial process. Those angered yelled

DeathtotheRapists,whilethe calmerones,maybe,joined insilentcandle lightprotests.TVChannels

feastedonthe livestreetactionbetweenpoliceandprotesters.Suddenly it lookedas iftheentirenation

wasshocked,angeredandhurt.ThePresidentinhisfirstRepublicDayspeechexhortedthenationto"reset

itsmoralcompass"andWelostmorethanavaluablelife;welostadream.IftodayyoungIndiansfeelout

raged,canweblameouryouth?Whenwebrutalizeawoman,wewoundthesoulofourcivilization,"

Butsadly, everythingwillsoonbeforgotten. Anotherstorywillcatchthelimelight.Thecandlelight

protesterswillgoback to thecomfortsoftheirhome,while theactivistswill takeupanothercause.The

Victimswillbeleftalone,scarredemotionallyforlife...streetswillstillbeunsafe,schoolswillcontinuetobe

soft targets,workplaceswill stillbedanger zones. In themidstofall this, theplaceof Values is rightly

questioned. Wheredowebegin,howdowe inculcate it andwhenwill society learn to liveby it? The

answer is:EveryCivilizationexistsonthestrengthof itsFamilyValues!Safety isourrightand itbeginsat

home.

There isonlyonequestiononthemindofeverymothertoday, Ismydaughtersafe;athome,on

thebus,atschool,thepark,theworkplace?Onlywhen Family thebasicunitofsociety, isunderstood

andappreciated,willwebegin to respectallasbrothersandsisters. It is rightlysaid,that thebestgifta

fathercangivehischildrenistolovetheirmother.Loveconquersall.Whenfamilylifeisdisruptedbyenvy,

misunderstanding,unforgiveness,violenceandanger,itsfalloutisspilledontothestreets. Violencebegets

moreviolence,disrespectbegetsmoredisrespect.Loveisdefeatedandlustmakesitsdemandsthatcauses

more hurt , abuse and pain. This issue of Valuesfor the Yatra focuses on FamilyValues.We need to

restructure society on the firm foundations of Family Values.we need to play our part. Education to

FamilyValues mustbegininthehomeandfindsitsextensionintheschoolandbeyond.Everylifeissacred

andmustbe respectedwithutmostcareand respect.Schoolshavean important role to

playandValuesfortheYatra isonestepinthatdirection.

FAMILY: My FoundationHowdoyoudefineFamilyValues?Havingstrongwelldefinedfamily

valueshelps solidify the foundation fora strong, tightknit family.

Strongandconsistent familyvaluesare important inbuildingtrust

andconfidenceineachfamilymember.

HerearesomeessentialFamilyValues.

1.Belonging. Itisimportantthateachmemberfeelsthattheyareloved,thatthey

belongandthattheymatter.Creatingastrongfamilyunitisgreatbuteachpersonshouldbeallowedthe

spaceandfreedomtoexploretheactivitiestheythinktheymayenjoy.Comingtogetherforspecialocca

sionsandholidaysandjustspendingtimetogetherasafamilyiswhathelpsbuildthatsenseofbelonging.

2.Flexibility,schedulesandstructureinthefamilyhelpmaintainsomelevelofsanity.3.Respect. This isabitmoredifficult todefine.Respect is indeedearnedand there isavery fine linebetweenitandfear.Theonlywaytoearnandkeepsomeonesrespectistofirstshowthemrespectyour

self.Respectasanimportantfamilyvaluewillextendoutofthehomeandintoschool,workorothersocial

settings.

4.Honesty. Thisisthefoundationofanyrelationshipsthataremeanttolast.Motherdaughter,husbandwife, sisterbrother. Without honesty a deeper connection will not form and certainly wont last.

Encouragehonestybypracticingunderstandingandrespectwhensomeonetellsyouoftheirwrongdoings.

Ifweloseitandgetangrywhenweretoldwhathashappenedtheotherpersonwillbemorelikelytohide

itfromyounexttimesimplytoavoidthedisrespect.

5.Forgiveness. Forgivingpeoplewhohavewrongedyouisanimportantchoicetomake.Yes,forgivenessisachoice.Keepinmindthateveryonemakesmistakes,wealloccasionallysaythingswewishwehadnt

andnoneofusareperfect.Getissuesoutintheopen,gainsomeunderstandingandmoveon.Lifeistoo

short.

6.Generosity. Givingwithoutthinkingwhatsinitformeisanimportantvalueforanyonewantingtobearesponsible,contributingmembertosociety.Throughgenerositywebuildempathysincewetendto

thinkmoreaboutwhatpeoplewantorneed. Itcanalso includegivingyourtime, love,attentionoreven

someofyourpossessions.

7.Communication.Communicationisasmuchanartasitisascience.Afailuretocommunicatewilllikely

leadtounhappinessandmisunderstandings.

putyourtoysawayafterplaying,howtotidyyourroomorhowandwhentofeedthedog.Thissenseof

responsibility extendswell into adulthood.An adultwho has an intrinsic sense of responsibilitydoesnt

requirea lotofprodding to showup toworkon time, returnphonecallsormeetdeadlines.Settingout

individualresponsibilitiesforfamilymembersworkstoinstillthisqualityineveryone.

Familyvaluesgiveourchildrena foundation tobuildupon. Ithelps themknow theyare lovedandgives

themasense

of

belonging.

Upon

this

sure

foundation,

they

can

spread

their

wings

and

grow

to

become

parentswhosharethesesamevalueswiththeirownchildren.Buildingafoundationforyourchildoffamily

valuesmaynotbeaseasyasyouthink.Oftenwebelievethatourchildwillpickuponourvaluesiftheylive

inthesamehome.Whiletheymaypickupmanyofyourvalues,parentsneedtoremembertheyarenotthe

only influence in theirchild's life.Theseoutsidevaluesoften competewith familyvalues foryourchild's
