Each crane weighs 1800 tons and when the crane arm extends over a docked ship it can reach across the width of about 26 containers Normal STS cranes can reach across 22 containers and are roughly 20-feet shorter in height than the new cranes

All four cranes cost $448M and are part of the $320M expansion project by the Virginia Port Authority In June four new rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMG) will also be arriving

ldquoA two-carrier-acquisition is a significant step toward building these ships more affordablyrdquo said HII spokeswoman Beci Benton ldquoIt is important to note that the multi-ship purchase of aircraft carriers helps stabilize the Newport News Shipbuilding workforce enables the purchase of materials in quantity and permits a fragile supplier base of more than 2000 in 46 states to phase work more efficientlyrdquo

Newport News Shipbuilding a branch of Huntington Ingalls Industries is Virginiarsquos largest industrial employer with more than 23000 people on payroll

The cranes were constructed by Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co in Shanghai China and took two months to reach Virginia while via route of the Suez Canal Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean on the Zhen Hua 27

One of the vessels will be a CVN-80 named USS Enterprise the second will be a CVN-81 They are third and fourth carriers of the Gerald R Ford class

ldquoA two-carrier-acquisition is a significant step toward building these ships more affordablyrdquo said HII spokeswoman Beci Benton ldquoIt is important to note that the multi-ship purchase of aircraft carriers helps stabilize the Newport News Shipbuilding workforce enables the purchase of materials in quantity and permits a fragile supplier base of more than 2000 in 46 states to phase work more efficientlyrdquo

Newport News Shipbuilding a branch of Huntington Ingalls Industries is Virginiarsquos largest industrial employer with more than 23000 people on payroll
