    Valuing VolunteersThe 2nd North East Lincolnshire Volunteer ManagersMeeting took place in Cleethorpes at the end ofSeptember, was well attended and appreciated by all.   • volunteering.* The actual health benefits (to the health service andso on) he puts at 23bn per year.And he cant even put a value on the total social valuethat volunteering brings to others and communities (forexample in reducing homelessness).

    So his conclusion is that the true social value ofvolunteering in the UK can be well over 120bn peryear. This value of volunteering, he says, needs tobe in the open and shouted about.

    Its of course just one take on volunteering one thatputs a monetary value to it. But its worth thinkingabout. We know that volunteers are well valued acrossNorth East Lincolnshire and we hope we at VANEL playour part in supporting well all the individuals whovolunteer and the organisations that host them.     01 News updatevarious general pieces of news, ideas, stories and thoughts we've picked up this month.

    Hard TimesThere's no doubt that nationally, charities have been having a hard time in the mediarecently (think Kids Company or chugging!) Of course it's clear from feedback from ourMembers and Friends locally that we don't recognise the picture painted by the nationalmedia. Our local charities and organisations generally work in a very different way tonational charities of the size that get national exposure. But it's always a concern for oursector to continue to operate well, openly and transparently and to safeguard ourreputations and keep the trust of our partners, beneficiaries and the public.

    Most local charities in North East Lincolnshire will fundraise in some manner. Sothe recently completed review of fundraising regulation should be a matter ofinterest to everyone. Stuart Etherington of NCVO, who chaired the review, recognisesthe challenges for our sector but also outlines that changes need to be made. His blogoutlines the results of the review here and you can download the review itself from there. Itis probably something that every manager, director, committee member and Trusteeacross our sector should be reading and thinking about - whether or not they engage withfundraising in the manners covered in the review. After all, safeguarding the reputation ofyour organisation is something that all committees and trustee boards should takeseriously as part of their 'stewardship' role.

    Perhaps this fundraising review is a topic that will come up for discussion at our "TrusteeNetwork" event in November? Perhaps there are other external factors that yourcommittee or board would like the opportunity to discuss with others? If so, why not comealong to our meeting?

  • The meeting will be a half-day event during National Trustee's Week (2-8 Nov). We've notfixed the day or venue just yet (keep an eye on www.vanel.org.uk/trusteesweek for updatesor call us) but it will be an opportunity to get together and discuss trusteeship, governanceand leadership issues together as a group. We'll be sharing ideas and resources aroundboard development, trustee recruitment, effective governance practices and more. We'llhave short facilitated discussions on a range of leadership and governance topics - whichcan also be suggested by the group on the day. If you'd like to speak to other committeeor board members from organisations other than you own, then this may be a goodopportunity. Much more detail on this very soon.     Now seems to be a really good time to take a look at how we all do things. Hope to seesome of you at our November event.

    Its StoptoberStoptober is back, only this time there isnew legislation in place around smokingand e-cigarettes. Effective from 1stOctober 2015 it is now illegal to:-- Sell cigarettes and e-liquids to under18s- Buy tobacco or e-cigarette products forunder 18s, and- To smoke in a private vehicle carryingunder 18s.

    Do you know what the legislation isregarding e-cigarettes? What about yourown internal policy regarding e-cigarettes?

    The answer to the first question dependson where in the UK you are. England,Scotland and Wales all have differentrules, with the most stringent in Wales andthe least stringent in England. Thenvarious national chains of businesseshave implemented their own rulesregarding the use of e-cigarettes on theirpremises.

    The arguments for and against the use ofe-cigarettes are wide and varied, withsome saying that they are useful tools inthe process of stopping smoking andothers vehemently opposed as the longterm effects with their use are stillunknown.

    02 Volunteering Support

    North East LincolnshireVolunteer Managers NetworkThe 2nd North East Lincolnshire Volunteer Managers Network meeting took place onWednesday 23rd Sept at The Pavilion, Sidney Sussex Recreation Ground in Cleethorpes.We had a great turnout of 15 volunteer involving organisations and a full agenda to discussa number of volunteer related topics.

    Our first discussion covered equality and diversity; how do we ensure that everyone thatwants to volunteer can find a role that suits them regardless of their circumstances andbackground. We considered how we could break down barriers to offer flexibleopportunities, and how we could build new roles around someone offering new skills to ourorganisation. For our second discussion we considered the Governments pledge torelease employees from larger companies to do up to 3 days volunteering per year tosupport local charities. A high number of attendees said that the Open Forum agenda itemwas very useful to them. This gave each organisation an opportunity to discuss anyvolunteer issue concerning them. We talked about volunteer expenses, recruitingvolunteers for one off events and the need to recruit more volunteers across the board.

    Many organisations are really struggling to find enough volunteers therefore a subgrouphas been set up to consider how volunteers can be shared across organisations and howwe can advertise special events to attract volunteers for one off occasions. If you areinterested in joining the subgroup, we will be meeting on Monday 2nd November atVANEL office, 23 Bargate, Grimsby DN34 4SS, from 10am 12noon.Findings of the sub group will be reported back to the next Volunteer Managers Networkmeeting on Tuesday 8th December 2015. The meeting will be held at Rock Foundation,39-41 Heneage Road, Grimsby, DN32 9ES from 9.30am to 12.30pm.     Big Lottery supportchangesFor a while now Rob Malyan has beenthe local Big Lottery representativecovering Northern Lincolnshire and quite anumber of you will have met him duringone of his regular visits to Grimsby.Rob has recently started a secondment tothe Funding Development Team within BigLottery, so until October 2016 it won't beRob dealing with local funding support. AtVANEL we wish Rob well in his new role.Big Lottery have just advertised for a newlocal support post (see here) so as soonas we know who is here to support youwith your funding bids we'll share thenews.

Now in its fifthyear, Starbucks Youth Action aims toinspire and support 16 to 24 year olds whowant to make a positive impact in theircommunity.

    EN:Able CommunityInvestment Fundopen for applicationsEfficiency North's EN:Able CommunityInvestment Fund (formerly the 4 GoodFund) has been created to support smallscale projects which will benefit localcommunities within the Yorkshire andHumber area. The maximum amount thatcan be applied for is 5,000 per project.The closing date for applications is 4pmon Friday 30 October 2015.

    Applications submitted by organisations inNEL must be endorsed by ShorelineHousing Partnership who is an EfficiencyNorth member. Contact details for SHPare included in the application pack.The Community Investment Fund Panelevaluates all applications submittedagainst an agreed framework that reflects

    Young people in England, Scotland andWales aged between 16 and 24 years whoare not in full time education oremployment can apply. The funding is tobe used by the young people to developand run projects in their local community.Projects should provide a positive benefitto the local community and look toenhance the young leaders employabilityand leadership skills. Two young peopleneed to lead the project and engage afurther 50 young people throughout thecourse of the project. The young peoplewill need to have a youth worker/trainingorganisation able to support themthroughout the project.

    To support the project, young people willbe given access to a specially designedApp. Once downloaded, the app will helpthem keep track of their milestones andachievements while supporting them withthe planning and delivery of their socialaction project.

    All workers supporting young people willreceive a copy of an employability toolkitto run through employment ready sessionsand the QCF Unit Leadership pack, whichwill provide activities and recordingdocuments for the young person tocomplete to gain their QCF unit inLeadership. In addition, young people willhave access to job and apprenticeshipvacancies within the Starbucks CoffeeChain.This year's Starbucks Youth Action is arolling programme running with monthlydeadlines.The remaining deadlines are: 5 October2015, 2 November 2015, 1 December2015, 4 January 2016, 1 February 2016and 7 March 2016.

After all, the Digital Revolution is now over as a society weredigital by default (whether we like it or not). Yet at VANEL, as we work with our Members andFriends, were often very aware of how difficult it is for everyone to understand and embracetechnology in an effective way. At VANEL were here to help you and your organisation to find theknowledge, encouragement and support you need to make the most of essential technologies inyour organisation. Please talk to us.

    WebsitesEvery organisation really needs to be online. Usually that means a website. (Being just on socialmedia may not be enough). And as we move to mobile by default, those websites need to workon phones and tablets. And your website needs to be accurate and up to date. Ive noticedincreasingly that funders ask for your website details so they can review what you do from lookingthrough your site. How well would your website reflect your organisation to a funder?

    If you have no real idea how a website works and how to make one (or get one made for you) thenCooking up a website is a 2hr introduction to all the technologies behind websites. What do you needin terms of skills, time, money, technologies, tools, support, approach and more.

    If youre already working on building or improving a website, then WebClub is here to support you.WebClub is now into its fourth year, but is changing as needs from our groups change. So face-to-facesupport sessions are probably every 4-6 weeks now but will still give a chance for those working onwebsites to meet, discuss, get support and encourage each other. But support is now online too forWebClub members and also direct via Karl who can help you keep on the right path through yourdevelopment and solve your problems and issues. Youre doing the work, but who are you turning tofor support? That would be WebClub. All for just 2 per month (actually 25 per year).

  • Theres more ways we support groups with websites too. Groups with existing sites that they needongoing technical support with can buy into our WebClub Gold remote administration service(www.vaneldigital.org.uk/webclubgold). And many groups have purchased bespoke website developmentwork from VANEL to design, plan or build their website, train their team or support their existing efforts.     Other technologyTechnology is of course not just websites. What about Social Media or other cloud based servicesand tools? Hardware, software, media, storage, backups, anti-virus, databases and more?

    Were pretty skilled and experienced at VANEL in all forms of technology, so were more than happy togive any of our Member or Friend organisations a free technology review so that you can talk throughyour issues and plans, and we can suggest what you could tackle and how. Obviously a free review cantdive too deep or produce detailed, fully costed reports, but for many groups who weve worked with it ismore than enough to give you some expert guidance on your options.     Our next session is Tue 20th October when well look at e-newsletters and Mailchimp. E-newslettershave lots of benefits and can be easy to do when you know how. But how should a good e-newsletterwork, and what does a poor approach look like? At VANEL weve been doing e-newsletters for a longtime and also, as part of our editorial work, we receive a lot of them too! Some groups have alreadyembraced e-newsletters effectively, but some are so poor were not even technically able to forward themon. So this session should be helpful to anyone wanting to contact their beneficiaries or audience moreeffectively. (Mailchimp by the way is an excellent free tool to manage your newsletters, so well look atthis in some detail during the session). Contact Karl or Peter at VANEL to book onto this session.

This digital volunteering programme is an ongoing part of our volunteeringsupport work at VANEL and were looking to find those IT issues that you have that could require somesupport. If you think youve got an issue that could be helped with an IT skilled volunteer, then please letus know and well help you define as a clear volunteering opportunity and then look for volunteers tosupport you.     07 Governance newsThe first week in November (2-8th) is National Trustees' Week. As last year, VANEL will be activelyparticipating by hosting a number of events during the week to help our Member and Friend organisationsto actively consider their governance and trusteeship situations to consider whether there areimprovements to be had.

    We're just finalising details of a programme for the week now, so visit www.vanel.org.uk/trusteesweek tokeep an eye on news of our plans.

    But we will definitely be hosting:- A free to attend "Trustee Network" half-day workshop on Monday 2nd Nov, pm in Grimsby. This willbe an opportunity for anyone interested in governance and trusteeship to consider the issues aroundgovernance that affect them, look at resources and approaches available, and take part in discussionsaround a range of key issues.- A "Technology and Trustees" free workshop as part of our "Tech Tuesdays" programme (so Tue 3rdNov, 12.30-2pm).- A "Roles and Responsibilities of Trustees" training session. 2 hours long and suitable for any newtrustees or committee members who would like to understand more about the role. There will be a smallcharge for this session.

    Vicky and Angela have been expanding their skills over the past year at GrimsbyInstitute and both are pleased to announce that they have successfully receivedqualifications from their studies. Angela has received her AAT Level 2 certificate andVicky has received her Supporting Teaching and Learning Level 2 certificate.Congratulations on your hard work.

    Following receiving her qualification Vicky has also successfully gained a part time job in a local primaryschool and is now splitting her time between the two jobs.
