Rubric for Name Design #1&2 in Color Media:

____Both works demonstrate strong composition: contrast, balance, movement, emphasis and unity with depth. Rhythm is a bonus here. In your first piece, your line quality should be varied as well. (Sensory and Formal Properties: 30pts)

____ Your 2nd work shows an understanding and application of gradation and contrast in the shading. You have blended carefully to avoid pencil tracks and your edges are applied carefully and evenly with no stray marks on your contours. (Technical Properties: 30pts)

____Your work demonstrates the use of sensory and formal properties to reflect the musical influences you chose for your work. In your 1st piece, your line quality is expressive of mood or feeling and is inspired by your own original signature. (Expressive Properties 30pts)

____Your work was completed and turned on time as a result of you using your time and materials wisely (Reflective Properties): 10pts BUT realize that you can lose 10 pts A DAY for each day this project is late)

Small Project #3

HOW WILL YOU BE GRADED?

_10_Does your project have a strong point of emphasis? What is it?

_20_Does your project have movement/balance/variety/Unity? How

are they created?

__10__Did you use a cool or warm color scheme accented by complementary colors? What were they?

_20_ Do you have strong craftsmanship? What did you do to create it?

_10_ Did you work with opaque or transparent technique consistently? If you didn’t, why not?

_10_ Is your line quality varied?

_10_ Do your value changes create the illusion of form?

_10_Do you have a strong sense of depth from a careful layering of wax over the work?

1. Create a composition using your signature as a basic inspiration. Choose your best thumbnail and add/subtract lines to create a strong composition.

2. Use Sharpie to vary your line quality to get a mood across and add and take away lines and shapes to create a strong composition that has:Balance/Variety/EmphasisMovement/Unity

3. Now-transfer your thumbnail to a 5.5x5.5 piece of paper. Work with watercolor ground if there is time. Transfer your thumbnail to large paper using the quadrant method. Don’t forget to make a half inch border. Next, focus on bringing out the shapes in your composition and letting the lines become edges of shapes.-use a Sharpie here to define those shapes.

4. Finally-choose a cool or warm color scheme accented by the opposite color scheme for emphasis and detail - add to the principles of design…then shade the shapes you see using watercolor and colored pencil. Allow your values to change gradually from light to dark to model form.

5. Glue your project to a piece of wood carefully.

6. Add wax and oil pastel in alternating layers to enhance the depth. Continue to work with your area of emphasis and a sense of balance and unity.
