2018

The VCE Season of Excellence is a five-month arts festival showcasing outstanding Victorian senior secondary student work. The Season, managed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, presents work created by art, technology, design, multimedia, film, dance, theatre, drama and music students.

Exhibitions, performances and screenings, accompanied by associated education talks, forums and panel discussions will be held across Melbourne’s major cultural venues from February to July 2018.

The Season is accessible for all audiences. Season venues have disability access and facilities – see the Season webpage for details.

Companion card holders are admitted free to Season events.

Delight in new musical compositions, original and scripted dramatic monologues, theatrical design and skilled interpretations of dance and music, demonstrating the creativity and sophistication of VCE performing arts students from 2017.

EDUCATION PROGRAMA Theatre Studies Design Forum will be held at the Melbourne Museum at 1.30pm on Tuesday 20 March 2018. This will feature a VCAA representative, an industry speaker and a presentation by a Theatre Studies Design student from 2017.

Teacher entry is free (maximum two) with group bookings over 10. Early booking is recommended as most shows sell out.

TOP DESIGNS17 March – 15 July

Experience the innovation and creative problem-solving of Victoria’s emerging young designers. Explore furniture, fashion, graphic and product design, set, prop and costume design, film, print layout, photography, animation, web design, and mechanical and electronic projects created by VCE Media, Product Design and Technology, Systems Engineering, Theatre Studies Design, VET Creative Digital Media and Visual Communication Design students.

EDUCATION PROGRAMSForums featuring VCAA representatives and industry speakers are offered in all studies. Introductory talks are also available for selected studies. Allow extra time for exhibition viewing.

Presented by the National Gallery of Victoria, Top Arts showcases outstanding works of art by VCE Art and Studio Arts students from 2017. This inspiring exhibition provides an illuminating insight into a range of themes and ideas explored by young artists from across Victoria.

EDUCATION PROGRAMSA range of informative and interactive education programs supporting student and teacher professional learning, including introductory talks, folio viewings and sessions with exhibitors, educators and gallery professionals are offered in conjunction with the exhibition.

TOP ACTS11 May

Top Acts is the final event in the VCE Season of Excellence 2018. The concert blends exceptional music performance, dance, drama, theatre studies and original musical works selected from over 150 performers in the Top Class concert series into one stunning and dynamic presentation.

TOP SCREEN8 March – 9 May

Top Screen explores the diverse and inspiring stories of VCE Media students from 2017. This engaging short film program comprises creative and original narratives, documentaries, music videos and animation works.

PREMIERE CAST AND CREW SCREENING (approx. 90min)

Enjoy the thrill of the opening night, and rub shoulders with the filmmakers, cast and crew.

SCREENING + MEET THE FILMMAKERS(approx. 150min)

Following the screening, the filmmakers will discuss their challenges and successes. The panel discussion is chaired by the Media State Reviewer.

Looking for solutions to those tricky problems you have been facing? Come armed with your curly questions to put to the presenter following the screening. This year, some sessions will be delivered by the VCAA Curriculum Manager with a focus on the new Study Design for VCE Media.

Attendees are invited to view the Production Design Plans of the Top Screen 2017 program after the screening. View the creative journey navigated by the filmmakers, while gaining an insight into the planning and research involved in making a film.

Following the School Holiday Screening, the Media State Reviewer will take the audience through the requirements and benefits of the PDP. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view the PDPs of the filmmakers during the session.

SCREENING + BEYOND TOP SCREEN (approx. 150min)

Back for a second year – attendees will hear from an industry professional currently working in the film industry, as well as catch up with a past Top Screener to hear where their journey has taken them since their involvement in Top Screen.
