VECOM®- CompactVehicle identification and priority
VECOM®
Smooth traffic flow for trams and buses is an essential
requirement for everyone. For passengers, who prefer
minimal waiting times and other delays. For transport
companies looking to offer optimal service and
efficient operations. VECOM® technology can be a key tool in
achieving this.
VECOM® is an inductive communication system at the basis
of many vehicle stop and central unit functions. VECOM® is
an abbreviation of ‘Vehicle Communications’, referring to
transparent information exchange between mobile vehicle
equipment and stationary equipment along the route.
VECOM® is used to exchange data between vehicle
equipment and roadside equipment. Vehicle identification
is used for priority requests at intersections, automatic or
manual points changing, reporting in and out at stops and
vehicle localisation and registration.
Priority request
Based on vehicle identification, a pre-configurable
priority request is submitted to a traffic control
installation. With VECOM®, it is possible to add the
vehicle status in comparison to the timetable to this request.
This enables using conditional priority, meaning that the
vehicle is given priority only if that is necessary.
Automatic point changing
A pre-configurable priority request is sent to a traffic
control device using vehicle identification. This ensures
that the switch points are set to the required position
automatically and well in advance, allowing for the vehicle
to continue without any delays.
Vehicle registration
The roadside equipment can register the identification
details of passing vehicles and the time of passing. This
function is a highly effective tool for analysing and
improving service levels. Furthermore, this function is
essential to running travel information systems effectively,
including Compact Bus Stations.
Versions
The VECOM® Compact systems are available in VECOM®-C or
VECOM®-CT versions and have 2, 4 or 8 loop capability.
VECOM®-C
System with full VECOM® functionality and suitable for the
loop buffer. The loop cable with the 25-pole sub-D plug of
the predecessor can be connected directly to the VECOM®-C
unit. Parts of the existing BWS systems are used for this
configuration, i.e.:
Loop cable;
Loop Distribution Panel / Wide Style (LDP/WS);
Loop buffer MK2.
VECOM®-CT
In the VECOM® Compact Transceiver version of VECOM®-C,
the full new functionality of the new VECOM® as described
will be available. Currently, the existing parts as described
under VECOM®-C are obsolete and the following extra parts
are required:
VECOM®-C Loop cable;
VECOM®-C LDP (Loop Distribution Panel);
VECOM®-C Transceiver.
VECOM®-C Features
VECOM®-Compact is the latest generation of VECOM® roadside
systems with the following properties:
Limited footprint thanks to 3 compact 3 HE modules;
An RS485 serial channel for connecting to an
intelligent roadside system or to a central system via the
CVU protocol or via the VETAG serial protocol;
An extra RS485 serial channel for controlling the digital
entrances and exits or an extra connection to a central
system;
An RS232 serial channel for diagnostics, configuration
and downloading software;
Extensive parallel input and output possibilities;
From and to passing vehicles;
From and to linked central systems;
Extensive, configurable 19 bit VETAG code conversion.
Benefits
VECOM®-C offers a number of specific benefits, making
VECOM®-C an ideal and cost-effective choice:
Highly reliable data communication;
Simple system with many extension options without
capital destruction;
Easy to install communication loops (without
regulation);
State-of-the art technology;
Improved diagnostics and less sensitivity to noise;
Larger distance between loop and VECOM®-C unit
possible;
The option to combine two loops offers the following
benefits:
The driving direction can be detected with the
combined loops;
The two overlapping 8-shaped loops can
prevent double detections.
The entire VECOM® function, including the type
radio link modulation, is configurable. This gives
greater flexibility and enables completely adjusting
the function without any changes to the hardware;
All software, including modulation and filtering
algorithms, can be downloaded via the serial port.
Further benefits in combination with the “Loop
Transceiver” (VECOM®-CT) are:
Improved diagnostics (including detection of a dead
loop);
Improved insensitivity to EM noise, which allows the
unit to better handle environments with a high level
of EM noise (including Light Rail);
Longer “feeder” cables possible (up to 800 m
between the loop and VECOM®-CT unit).

Specifications
Software functions
Software functions approx. 200 different vehicle codes can be decoded.
Serial channels when detecting a vehicle, an exit and/or vehicle alert is reported.
Power supply
AC 176 VAC < U < 253 VAC / 50Hz / 1A.
DC 22,8 VDC < U < 25,2 VDC / 1,3A (For integration into other equipment, the
VECOM®-C system can also be connected to an external 24 VDC inlet).
Interfaces
3 Communication RS232 (service channel) and 2 x RS485 compatible. 1200, 9600 or 19200 bps half
channel duplex, VCU protocol (in accordance with ISO1745) or VETAG serial output. The
second RS485 channel can be used for controlling parallel inputs and outputs or
to connect an additional central system.
Please note: A distance up to 1 km is possible by adding a SERIO module.
Synchronisation Via the synchronisation interface, the VECOM®-C can be synchronised with the
interface of other VECOM® systems.
Parallel inputs and A maximum of 4 x I/O 1609 modules can be connected on the VECOM®-C units. This
outputs allows for making a large number of inputs and outputs available. The Relais
contacts are at 1 kVDC isolation voltage.
Contact current 0.5 mA < I < 100 mA, Contact tension 3.0 V < U < 50 V.
Diagnostics By means of LED’s and via the service channel (RS232).
