Vehicle registration in Slovakia

According to the Civil Code, the guarantee about the used vehicle is required and depends on the agreement

between the seller and the buyer but it cannot be less than 12 months. All vehicles registered in Slovakia must

be covered by a liability insurance policy that is valid in Slovakia. Collision /comprehensive insurance is optional.

An entrepreneur needs also the Trade License for the car registration.

In Slovakia, there are two ways of insuring a car. It is possible to choose between the mandatory contractual

insurance called PZP and the voluntary collision insurance called CASCO. The Basic difference between PZP and

CASCO lies in their functions. While the mandatory contractual insurance (PZP) has to protect assets and health

of others damaged by owner of car insurance, the collision insurance (CASCO) has to protect his/her own assets

and health. The car owner can choose between different insurance companies. For more information:

Registration costs and registration process

What is necessary for the registration of a new and of an imported car:

o complete the form for the vehicle registration

o the second part of the vehicle registration issued by the competent transport office

o the resolution issued by the same office about the vehicle technical compliance approval or about

the approved typology. This resolution of the registration is considered as its acquisition

document.

o the damages insurance/responsibility certification

o a valid ID document

o a mandate, signed by the car’s owner, certified by the notary if is represented by another person

o if the car’s owner is a legal person, it’s necessary to present the Trade License

o presence of the person authorized to act on behalf of the company ( manager, representative)

o the vehicle’s compliance certificate (COC) issued by the producer, if the car is new and equipped

with vehicle’s type approval, according to the European legislation (it is considered as “a new

vehicle” the vehicle which has been registered abroad not for more than 6 months and has driven

less than 6000km)

o in case of a new vehicle imported from another country of the European Community, it is

necessary to disclose the document regarding the VAT payment in the country, which has been

issued by the respective Income Revenue Authority. This certificate is not required if the car’s

owner present the registration document to get the Trade License and the Income Revenue

Authority certificate of the purchase from another EU country.

Administrative law

These are cost of the car registration for the first owner when the vehicle belongs to the category L1e,

L2e, L4e, L5e, L6e, L7e, LS, M1, M1G, N1 and N1G which should have more than three seats and according

to the engine power is:

1. up to 80 kW……........................................................................33 €

3. 86 kW - 92 kW........................................................................217 €

5. 98 kW - 104 kW......................................................................327 €

First owner registration for the categories M2, M2G, N2, N2G, M3, M3G, N3, N3G, O1, O2, O3, O4, T1, T2,

T3, T4.1, T4.2, T4.3, T5, Ra1, Ra2, Ra3, Ra4, Rb1, Rb2, Rb3, Rb4, T4, C1, C2, C3, C4.1, C5, PS – have to pay

33 € fee.

First owner registration for the categories N1 and N1G which have at least three seats have to pay 33€

fee.

First owner registration of an electrical vehicle costs 33€

Test plates

To register the imported vehicle in Slovakia it is necessary to ask for alternative plates.

Car registration

The steps and documents required for the vehicle registration in Slovakia are the following:

o there is a fee of 66.39€ to pay to the Recycling Fund : http://www.recfond.sk/

o a certified translation of the car documents and of the purchase agreement in Slovak language.

o carry out the vehicle inspection in Slovakia + emissions inspection + validity control

o present the approval vehicle type request according to the European legislation to the competent

transport office which issues then the vehicle registration (cost 106€ in tax stamps)

o provide the car insurance

o show the registration form to the corresponding office

In case of used vehicle, the following documents are required:

o purchase an agreement such as an invoice, a trade or donation contract

o if the vehicle comes from third countries it is necessary to attach the export license

o a report on the validity control with a suitability result issued not more than 15 days from the

request day

o a valid emissions inspection record with a suitable result

o the registration or de-registration document from the country where the vehicle was earlier

registered

o the vehicle technical test record issued by the authorized technical service (if necessary) and

which shows the vehicle respects norms and the technical request in force.

o the payment confirmation of the share paid to the recycling fund related to the vehicle import

The competent transport office approves the imported vehicle if the applicant fulfils the above mentioned

requirements, otherwise the request is rejected.

At the time that the office approves the imported vehicle, it issues:

o a deliberation of the imported vehicle

o the circulation certificate

According to EU’s normative, if the transport office accepts the approval, it issues:

o a approval deliberation

o the circulation certificate I.

Translations

The documents required for the car registration in Slovakia, released not in Slovak or Czech language must

be translated by a certified translator who is member of the register of the certified translators at the

Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic.
