Telephone use

Changing the battery

Whenthebatteryisrunningout,theinstrumentwillbeepatregularintervals.Youshouldbepreparedtoreplacethebattery.Thetimeuntiltheinstrumentsstopworkingdependsonthebatterytypeandmanu-facturer.Mercury-freebatteriesgenerallycauseearlierwarningbeeps.

Electromagnetic interferenceYourhearinginstrumenthasbeenthoroughlytestedforelectromagneticinterference.However,someproductsmayemitelectromagneticenergycausingunforeseeninterferencewithhearinginstruments.Examplesincludeinductioncookingappliances,shopalarmsystems,mobilephones,faxmachines,personalcomputers,X-rays,CTscans,etc.

Theelectromagneticemissionfromtheradiosystemiswellbelowinternationallimitsforhumanexposure.Bycomparison,theelectromagneticenergyofthehearinginstrumentislowerthanthatgeneratedbyhouseholditemssuchashalogenlamps,computermonitors,dishwashersetc.

Cell phone and hearing instrument compatibility

Somehearinginstrumentusershavereportedabuzzingsoundintheirinstrumentswhentheyareusingcellphones,indicatingthatthecellphoneandhearinginstrumentmaynotbecompatible.

Thecompatibilityofaparticularhearingaidandcellphonecanbepredictedbyaddingtheratingforthehearingaidimmunitytotheratingforthecellphoneemissions(ANSIC63.19-2006AmericanNationalStandardMethodsofMeasurementofCompatibilitybetweenWirelessCommunicationDevicesandHearingAids).

Forexample,thesumofahearingaidwitharatingof2(M2/T2)andatelephonewitharatingof3(M3/T3)wouldresultinacombinedratingof5.Accordingtothestandard,anycombinedratingthatequalsatleast5wouldprovide“normaluse”;acombinedratingof6orgreaterwouldindicate“excellentperformance.”
