Have you noticed those blue “ear” signs that you see
at the Senior Center? They are reminders that the
Senior Center has a T-coil system, which is a hearing
assistance system that works with a person’s own
hearing aids. You may have to ask your audiologist
to activate the T-coil in your hearing aid to make it
work, but that is usually a simple process. Once
activated, you either push a button or turn a tiny
knob on your hearing aid to use it. You may also
have a small hand-held remote to switch on your
T-coil. Then just sit back and enjoy better hearing
for films, speakers, and musicians! If you are already
using a special setting on your hearing aid for
telephone use, your T-coil has been activated.
You can benefit from the T-coil system even if you
don’t have a hearing aid because we have headsets
that use the same technology. We’ve also have a
mini T-coil system and microphone at the front desk
so people can hear the receptionist better. The
Verona Public Library recently installed a T-coil, so
you can take advantage of the same technology when
you visit the library. Ask staff for assistance if you
would like to learn more about the t-coil or the
headsets.

From the Director’s Desk
TRIAD is a National program that partners with RSVP
of Dane County, law enforcement, fire, EMS departments and local business’s in providing safety resources to seniors. Every month we offer a TRIAD
presentation to help educate the senior community on topics such as scams, emergency and disaster preparedness, fire prevention and more. Our TRIAD committee is beginning to think of next year’s program
planning, and we’d love to hear from you if there is a topic you’d like to see presented here at the senior center. Want to be a part of our TRIAD committee?
We’d love to have you. The TRIAD committee meets once a month for about an hour to discuss and plan for programs promoting a safe community for seniors. If
you have any program ideas, or would like to join our committee, let me know! Speaking of TRIAD, September 22nd from 8:45-4:00 is the annual TRAID Conference at the
American Family Insurance Center. A few of the workshops offered will be tech savvy seniors, Identity theft, Outsmarting the scam artist, and drug trends
(heroin) The cost of the conference is $25. If you’d like to attend, please call RSVP of Dane County at 608-441-7897 to register.
Are you getting a lot of unwanted phone calls from numbers you don’t recognize? Add your phone number to the NO CALL LIST by calling the Wisconsin registry at 1-888-382-1222. Numbers on the WI list will
automatically be added to the Federal list. Remember, scammers don’t care about the no call list, so beware of any numbers that you do not recognize.
Hacks & Facts - Trouble falling asleep? Try the 4-7-8 technique: Inhale 4 seconds, hold it for 7 seconds, exhale for 8 seconds, and repeat (this really works!) For
a less mess breakfast, put pancake mix in a ketchup bottle. Charlie Chaplin once entered a Carlie Chaplin look-alike contest where he came in 3rd,
111,111x111,111=12345654321, and the cigarette lighter was invented before the match. And now you
know! R-E-L-A-X - Aaron Rodgers !

Health Bits from Nurse Barbara
September brings preparation for “back
to school” and updating immunizations. It is
important for the senior population as well
as the youngsters. Some important vac-
cinations for adults to be aware of are:
Pneumococcal (Pneumonia); Shingles;
Hepatitis A&B; Tetanus/Diphtheria (Td); and
Influenza (Flu).
SAVE THE DATE
The flu shot is scheduled to be given
at the Verona Senior Center on
October 5th, 2017, from 9 to 12.
There are not many reasons to avoid
receiving the flu vaccine. But, if you have any
concerns, contact your care provider before
getting the vaccine. Statistics have shown
that last year’s flu vaccine was very effective
in preventing serious flu symptoms!
September 14, at 10:30, we will
resume our Healthy Lifestyles
program. This month I will present a
program on Shingles and relief after the
virus subsides. Please come and join in the
program and discussion. The Healthy
Lifestyles group has been getting larger and
we have great audience participation. Please
come. I welcome your feedback!

Friendly Faces
Greetings all,
My name is Caryl Flesch, the second child of
Harland and Caryl Farrell, the wife of Jack
Flesch. I was born in the Stoughton Hospital
and spent the first month of my life there till
they sent me home. I grew up on the family
farm on Bell Brook Road. My first 7 years of
education was at the Oak Grove School. I
graduated from Belleville. I went one year at
Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, then 3 years
at Madison College with an Associate's degree
in Marketing and Accounting. I lived with my
parents until 1980. Then I bought my first
house in 1984. I got married in 1988. In 2004
we had Jim Coons build our retirement home
in the Meister sub division of the West Ridge
Neighborhood, (AKA far west side of Verona).
Jack retired in 2008. I retired in 2011 after 36
years, 6months, and 23 days of state service,
shortly after Governor Walker took office and
implemented Act 10 on March 13, 2011.
I have been taking exercise classes at the
Verona Senior Center since Capitol Physical
Therapy Clinic held evening classes.
I stared volunteering for Verona Senior Center
when Mary Sturtevant asked for help
decorating for special events at Verona Senior
Center. I started taking care of the Serenity
Garden in July 2013. The garden had wilted so
badly that first summer! Chris Nye signed me
up for RSVP and consulted with me on anything
to do with the garden. I have been keeping
track of the indoor plants for the last couple of
years.
Clara Anderson asked me to help with serving
meals and I also installed the lights on the
ceiling in the Exercise Room. I'm here for
massage and Tai Chi on Tuesdays. Wednesdays
for MELT class and Thursdays I'm here all day. I
go to Shannon's Keeping Fit Class, Coffee
Hour, serve lunch, CORE at 2PM, and then I
work outside until the mosquitoes drive me
away. I love Fridays too with the ice cream
socials, movies, and Tai Chi. You may recognize
me better with my coveralls, goggles, a big hat,
face mask, and headphones. Either way it is nice
to see all of you enjoying the Verona Senior
Center. Walk out the Trailside door sometime
to see where I spend my time. This year with
all the rain and wind the garden is a little
overgrown. :)

Did You Know? The Friends of Verona Senior
Center support the programs and services of the
Verona Senior Center, continuing a long standing
tradition that originated with the Verona Area Active
Adults (VAAA). The Friends group is an advisory
board. They provide helpful input, organize our
fundraisers, and provide financial support for the
musicians at the monthly birthday & anniversary
party. They also provide the snacks for the Coffee
Hour, Veterans Group, Caregivers Group, Parkin-
son’s Group, and more. The Friends support special
projects like the new intergenerational music pro-
gram, which will make attending Madison Symphony
Orchestra performances possible for seniors who
could not otherwise afford it. The support we
receive from the Friends groups is over and above
the city’s budget for the Senior Center. We are very
grateful for the Friends help in making the Senior
Center a better place. Thank you!
Many Thanks to Our Program Sponsors:
Culver’s – Birthday Coupon Cards
5th Quarter – Birthday Coupon Cards
Comfort Keepers – Bingo
State Bank of Cross Plains – Birthday Cake
Agrace Hospice – Caregivers Support Group
Thank you to all who donate to the Verona Senior
Center! You can choose to designate a specific use for
your gift, such as the nutrition program, musical pro-
grams, Veterans group, Club 108, or Helping Hands, a
fund that provides short-term emergency support to sen-
iors in need. If you do not designate a specific use for
your gift, the Friends group will use your gift where they
feel the need is greatest. Again, many thanks!
