OFF-SEASON FITNESS REGIMENT FOR AN OHL PLAYER: Players will work out 5-6 days a week. The off-season is broken into two phases. Players focus on increasing size during Phase 1, and increase power/strength in Phase 2 while maintaining conditioning, flexibility and speed.

SUMMER AS THE BATTALION TRAINER: I’ll attend league meetings and renew my certifications. I’ll be training some local players, work out myself and enjoy summer in the north.

OFF-SEASON VS. IN-SEASON TRAINING: Off-season training is focused on a number of attributes. Players look to make gains in weight, strength, power, speed, conditioning and flexibility. In-season workouts focus more on maintenance, and more rest.

ADVICE FOR AN ATHLETE HEADING INTO THEIR OFF-SEASON: Make sacrifices and never miss a training day. Get proper rest and nutrition. Play other sports as diversifying allows you to work on different skill sets. And remember, if you aren’t getting better, someone else is!

TENNIS ANSWERS PHYSICAL LITERACYSubmitted by North Bay Tennis Club

Physical literacy, a fancy term meaning that if children have control over basic movements with their body, they're more

likely to maintain physical activity or sport for their entire life.

The minimum physical skills children need to play most sports are called Fundamental Movement Skills - throwing, catching, jumping, striking, running, kicking, wheeling. Children need to be taught the 7 fundamental movement skills.

Some children learn by seeing someone else do it, some have to be shown over and over. Even highly coordinated children still need guidance, otherwise there wouldn't be pitching coaches in baseball.

Schools are sometimes not enough to teach these skills. Very few have a specialized physical education teacher anymore, let alone the resources.

Teaching children how to catch or kick a ball properly obviously still falls onto parents. Parents that enter their children at a young age (3-8) into sport help their children improve coordination and develop a love for sport. Coaches in these sports are the most experienced to teach children fundamental movement skills for their own sport and some are transferable between sports.

No sport requires all 7 skills. In any sport, one or more are missing. Your choices are to enter your child into more than one sport, or get one sport that covers most of these skills. According to Coach Fransua Rachmann at the North Bay Granite Tennis Club, tennis incorporates 5 of the 7 skills and he uses his 22 years of coaching to help players as young as 2 develop them through fun games and play.

Professional tennis players are some of the fittest sportspeople in the world. Matches can last longer than 2 hours with no replacements or time outs.

Movement skills learned from tennis can transfer to other sports in the future, but also in making decisions in life away from the sports field.

BILLIARDS'S BEST IN NIAGARA FALLSSubmitted by Partners Junior Pool League

Over the years, our Junior league players have been at the forefront of many success stories.

Most recently, we sent seven of our junior players to the Canadian Cue Sport (CCS) Championships in Niagara Falls. Two of these players were champions in their respective divisions last year, and for five of our players, it was their first out of town tournament.

We are very proud of all our players, they shined through some tough competition against other junior players from numerous locations across Canada, but most of all they made new friends and had fun.

18 and Under Division: Nicolas Raymond – 2nd Place, Dannik Brisson – 5th Place

14 and Under Division: Sierra Seguin – 2nd, CJ Hummel – 5th, Brent Deschamps – 9th, Skylar Parfitt – 13th and Ryder Landriault – 17th.

Partners Junior Pool encourages our junior players to take advantage of the opportunity to experience these events and we are looking forward to participating in future tournaments.

Partners Junior Pool League allows children of all ages the opportunity to have fun each week in a rewarding and competitive team sport.  We have expert coaches on hand each week to teach, mentor and challenge our players.

TRAPPER GOLDSubmitted by North Bay Trappers Hockey

There was a tight grip on the brooms.

After taking the first two games of the series, including the dramatic come-from-behind game one win, the North Bay & District Nipissing Reader Minor Peewee 'AAA' Trappers swept away Nickel City.

Zach Major broke a 4-4 tie for the game, and series, winner over The Sons to capture the NOHA Minor Peewee AAA title in Sudbury with a heart-pounding 5-4 victory on a Saturday night in late March.

The Trappers rolled through the playoffs unbeaten with an impressive 6-0 record defeating the Sudbury Wolves in the semi-finals and the Sons in three straight in the best-of-five NOHA finals.

Jesse Lefebvre, Grayden Robertson-Palmer, Masen Wray and Nolan Newton had the other goals for the Trappers, who also captured the NOHA title against the Sons in the Major Atom 'AA' championships last spring.

Trappers head coach John Couch says the players heightened their grit awareness and showed a no quit attitude.

"It has been a fantastic season of steady measurable growth and improvements for all of us, the players and coaches,” said Couch.

"Twice over the final series we found ourselves down,  with only a few reminders from the coaches about our mindset and how we can create a swing in momentum, it brought them around both times.

“We all bought into the team first attitude which, in the end, was the difference maker.”

Congratulations to the whole team: Patrick Danis, Justin Robinson, Ethan Desjardins, Masen Wray, Grayden Robertson-Palmer, Nate Gravelle, Jesse Lefebvre, Mathieu Turgeon, Caleb Dawson, Nolan Newton, Tyler Moore, Davis Anello, John Couch Jr., Andre Mondoux, Ayden Thomason, Zach Major and Noah St. Jean.  Coaching Staff: John Couch, Glen Gravelle, Troy Lefebvre, Scott Robinson, Denis Major (manager), Remi St. Jean (trainer), Carmen Anello ( fundraising/team videographer),  Shelley Newton (treasurer) and Geeno Robinson (statistician).

Unfortunately for the North Bay Savignac General Woodwork Ltd. Major Peewee 'AAA' Trappers, it was a tough ending.

The Trappers had eliminated Timmins in the semi-finals and ended up facing Nickel City, who had upended Sudbury by coming back from a 2 games - 1 deficit.

The Sons continued rolling and defeated the Trappers in 3-straight. Despite the sweep, the games were all close and could have gone either way.

CATAHAN CLIMBING

THE RANKSSubmitted by the North Bay Tennis Club

Adrian Catahan has come a long way since starting to play Ontario Tennis Association junior tournaments in the

GTA in September 2017.

This 14 year old has an impressive record, seeing as he comes from North Bay where there are no indoor tennis facilities to practice year-round like his opponents.

Of the 14 tournaments Adrian's entered, he's won three, reached the final twice and lost in the semi-final four times.

Adrian's won 19 matches against only seven losses, pretty good for a first year player competing in the U16 category. He’s currently ranked 108 in Ontario in U16 out of the 577 active players, but has beaten a number of top-100 players over the last few months.

One of Adrian’s first goals is to break into the top-100, not only in Ontario, but in Canada.  He has the potential to be a top ranked junior player, says Fransua Rachmann, Adrian’s full time coach in North Bay.

Catahan likes that tennis is an individual sport and that he is solely responsible for each point won or lost. There are some challenges of playing an individual sport compared to a team sport. No replacements for injuries, no coach or team mates telling you what to do during the match since coaching is not allowed during matches at this level. Players have to strategize and outthink their opponents by themselves during matches.

There are a few things to work on this summer but Adrian is a keen student and not afraid of a lot of work on and off court. Rachmann says the future looks bright for this young star, a result of a vibrant junior program at the North Bay Tennis Club.

The road ahead will get harder and, even if the destination is not yet clear, Adrian's enjoying the journey.

SILVER EARNS TRIP EASTSubmitted by West Ferris Ringette Assn

For the first time since ringette's invention in North Bay in 1963, the West Ferris Ringette U19's team made history representing

the West Ferris Ringette Association and North Bay at the Eastern Canada Ringette Championships, April 18-20 (after OT deadlines) in Nova Scotia.

The U19's got there by earning silver at the Ontario Ringette “A” Provincial Championships.

The veteran U19A players had won Provincial silver the past two seasons. With 3 golds in 4 tournaments this season, the team was ranked 3rd, behind Timmins and Forest.

Their 5-1-1 round-robin record took them to the semis against Forest, whom they had not defeated all season. The 63s came on strong, besting Forest 7-5.

In the all-Northern Ontario final, the team faced Timmins, who they lost to earlier. The see-saw battle saw Chanel Cyr strike at 10:28 in the first. Timmins tied it on a shot off the face off to close out the first half.

Timmins grabbed the lead but Lauryn Hamilton answered 10 seconds later on a spectacular passing play by Emile Price and Kaitlyn Pace to even it at 2. 26 seconds later, Timmins led again.

Excellent goaltending by Maddy Laframboise kept the 63's in contention. With 2:38 remaining, Rylee Cote made a great pass to Erin Ablett who buried the ring to tie the game 3-3.

After a timeout, the 63's struggled to clear their zone. Timmins notched the go-ahead marker with 0:54 remaining and the 63's suffered a heart-wrenching 4-3 loss.

The silver secured the team's wild card spot at the Easterns and they were awarded the Sportsmanship award as voted by the 7 teams and referees.

Following a busy month of practice and fundraising, the 63's were to face 2 teams each from Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada - including their final round-robin game against Timmins - a chance for redemption.

YOUNG TEAM MAKING

AN IMPRESSIONSubmitted by KTP Athletics

The KTP Athletics' Badminton Team from North Bay has been around for only five years, but has quickly made an impression

on the badminton scene in Northern Ontario and the rest of the province. The team, which brings together competitive juniors aged 11-18 from the North Bay area, competed at the Northern Ontario Badminton Association Junior Championships, hosted in North Bay recently.

The tournament brought together 130 athletes from all corners of Northern Ontario, including Timmins, Elliot Lake, New Liskeard, Sudbury and Pikangikum. KTP fielded 20 athletes across all age groups and events.

The team saw plenty of success over the weekend, and for a young team has established itself very quickly as a force to reckon with on the Northern Ontario circuit.

The team would like to send out some special mentions to the following athletes that took home titles at the annual championships: -Ryan O'Donnell, U14 Boys Singles- David Rojas Reid/Zakari Dufresne-Nappert, U14 Boys Doubles (2nd consecutive)

-Marco Brazeau, U16 Boys Singles (3rd consecutive)- Zachary Kizell/Cheukman Zhou (North Bay Badminton Club), U16 Boys Doubles (3rd consecutive)

-Jazlyn McGuinty, U16 Girls Singles- Andrée Courchesne/Cierra St. Germain (Sudbury Jr), U16 Girls Doubles

Special shout outs to David Rojas Reid, Zakari Dufresne-Nappert, Andrée Courchesne and Marco Brazeau, who finished top three in all events (singles, doubles and mixed doubles)!

The team also maintained some of the team championship trophies that are awarded to the club that earns the most points across all events of an age group, based on top six results. The team took home the U14 Team Trophy for the second consecutive year, as well as the U16 Team Trophy for the fourth consecutive year!

SUCCESSFUL SKI SEASON WRAPSSubmitted by North Bay Antoine Ski Race Club

The North Bay Antoine Ski Racers have

come to the end of a very successful season.

On behalf of the board, I thank the new families who joined the team and the families who have been with the team for many years - it was one of the most enjoyable seasons in recent memory.

Thanks to our dedicated coaches and volunteers who started in September with dry-land training and came out every weekend to make sure our athletes had a great learning environment.

And to Laurentian Ski Hill and Antoine Mountain for their support and allowing us to train at their facilities.

Our 2018-19 season planning is underway with returning coaches, new programs, stronger partnerships with other northern clubs and expanded opportunities for all our athletes.

Please watch for more information at www.northbayskiracingclub.com. You can also find us on Facebook and Instagram. We look forward to seeing you in the fall.

SIX OTS LEAD TO

BRONZESubmitted by North Bay and District Girls Hockey Association – Ice Boltz

The Assante Midget B Ice Boltz overcame much adversity to win the bronze medal at the OWHA Provincial

Hockey Championship.

With three players returning from significant injury and one more suffering from a stomach bug, the Midget B Boltz dug extra deep to win their first playoff elimination game against the Nepean Wild Cats.

With the arena increasingly packed by curious onlookers as the overtime periods piled on, Emma Caruso slapped a beauty one-timer to win the epic battle as the sixth period of OT was in its dying seconds.

Having to play their quarter final game a couple of hours later, the team managed to pull another rabbit out of the hat to eliminate the Smith Falls Cubs to advance.

Sunday morning, in the semi-final, the Boltz poured it on in the first period but as the game progressed it was clear their legs were suffering from the 15 periods of hockey the previous day. The team lost a heartbreaker to a formidable opponent from South Huron.

The girls regrouped over a fun game of imaginary football between games then rebounded with a strong performance to defeat the Kincardine Kinucks 1-0 to capture the bronze medal. Averi Fry scored the game winner on a clever sneak in from the point and Emma Lindeman secured the shutout for the local squad.

HIGHS & LOWS AT PROVINCIALSSubmitted by North Bay and District Girls Hockey Association – Ice Boltz

The North Bay Kal Tire  Peewee C Team embarked on a journey to the OWHA 2018 provincials with excitement and enthusiasm.

The event was the final weekend of hockey for a team that had worked so hard and improved so much over the season. A weekend they will always remember.

Beginning with the thrill of the big win to the heartbreak of a loss in the last 30 seconds of their last game. The event was as much about friendships and camaraderie as it was about playing the game. There was as much fun off the ice and in the hotel rooms (and hallways) as on the ice.

This team had become a family and learned to work together. There was laughter, joy, nail biting by the parents and coaches, tears, and many kms driven... and it was completely worth it! Awesome weekend with a great group of girls. Go Ice Boltz!

NOVICES TANGLE

IN TORONTOSubmitted by North Bay and District Girls Hockey Association – Ice Boltz

The North Bay Northern Green Energy Solutions Novice C Ice Boltz had a successful weekend at the OWHA provincial

championships in Toronto.

Friday morning's game was against the TCDGHA Rebels. The Ice Boltz tallied first with a goal from Brooklyn McGowan, assisted by Kloe Boucher. Kaylee Bolton added three more for the 4-1 win. Alivia Purcell was given the team mascot “Bolt” for her effort during this game.

Next, the Mitchell Meteors. Entering the second, Mitchell was up 1-0 but Sophie Lebeouf found the back of the net after picking up the rebound of a Karlee Bolton shot to tie the game. Purcell added a goal however, despite great efforts by all including goalies Tayla Booth and Kaylee Blacker, the Ice Boltz came up short, a 5-2 loss. Game “Bolt” was given to Lily Gurini, who showed excellent improvement all season.

The round robin ended against Clarence Rockland Lightning. North Bay notched the opener with a power play goal from Kaylee Bolton in the first. By the end of the second, the Lightning led 2-1. Half-way through the third, Kaylee Bolton tied the game on a penalty shot. Forward Macy McLeod battled in front of the net but was shut down by the Lightning goalie. Excellent back checking earned Quinn O’Hagan game “Bolt”. This tie put the girls into the quarterfinals against Sarnia.

Sarnia took an early 1-0 lead. Ice Boltz forward Reese Rowley and line mates Claire Wilson and Purcell quickly answered to tie the game. Kaylee Bolton added a second goal however, despite excellent defensive efforts and stellar saves by Tayla

Booth, Sarnia took the 4-2 win. Kaylee Bolton earned "Bolt" for her leadership and passion all season.

The team greatly improved throughout the season. They worked hard, developed life-long skills and friendships during their first year of rep hockey. They weren't ready for the season to end.

LIKE TRUE WINNERSSubmitted by North Bay and District Girls Hockey Association – Ice Boltz

Despite the tough competition the girls faced during provincials, the Atom B Ice Boltz played three hard fought games.

It was a great effort and the results did not reflect their hard work or talent. Although the girls fell 6-0 to the, eventual, bronze winners Oakville Hornets, 6-0 to the North Durham Blades and 4-1 to the Cambridge Roadrunners, they never gave up. That resulted in a last minute goal scored by Gabriele Dufresne-Nappert that was assisted by Emily Vibert.

Even though we were winless, the experience was memorable and these Ice Boltz girls finished like true winners!

GIRLS END WITH A T H R I L L E RSubmitted by North Bay and District Girls Hockey Association – Ice Boltz

The Bantam C had high hopes going into the final weekend coming off a win at our last tournament in Brantford.

Despite going 3-0 in our round robin play with a couple of dominant wins, we were unable to complete the comeback from a 2-0 deficit in our final game.

We gave the Highlanders a good fight, after pulling the goalie for an extra attacker we scored to tie the game with less than two minutes remaining. Our girls played hard to the end, dominating most of the overtime period.

We are so proud of this team, their commitment and progression thru the year has been fantastic. We would like to congratulate all the teams that represented the Ice Boltz this year.

IN SEARCH OF THE “PERFECT GAME”Submitted by North Bay and District Girls Hockey Association - Ice Boltz

From summer dry land training, 2-a-day ice sessions at training camp in August, an intense LLFHL schedule, a huge

play down series versus Sudbury and a great run at provincials that ended in triple OT heartbreak, this Bantam A group of 13 girls were challenged physically and mentally from day one. They pushed through it to have a fantastic year.

The coaches challenged these girls throughout the season, having them strive to play the “perfect game” and this group rose to the occasion. Not playing that unattainable “perfect game”, but giving everything they had, rewarding the coaches with the “perfect effort”.

The pinnacle of their season was the series versus rival Sudbury. A large portion of this group of 03/04 girls had never beaten Sudbury to advance to provincials in three previous attempts at the novice, atom and peewee levels. And, after 6 consecutive losses to the Wolves this season, the group had to hit the road and beat Sudbury twice in a row on their home ice. They did the improbable. Two games later the Ice Boltz were off to provincials, Sudbury was staying home.

At provincials, this group came up with some gritty performances again. Playing from behind in all three round robin games, fighting back to get a win and two ties, sending them through to the elimination round of 12.

Against a tough Durham West team, they fell behind. Again, they fought back to tie the game and send it to OT. Three OT periods later, Durham West scored the game winner, ending the Boltz provincial run.

Effort, determination, work ethic, working together with teammates towards a common goal and never giving up are characteristics that make successful teams and individuals. This group has an abundance of all of them. They should be extremely proud of their accomplishments.

A BITTERSWEET ENDINGSubmitted by North Bay and District Girls Hockey Association - Ice Boltz

The North Bay Ice Boltz Midget A team returned from the provincial playdowns with their heads held high.

In their first game they played a very strong Barrie Sharks team who had just won their division of their league and had won silver in the LLFHA overall Midget A finals. The Boltz came out strong and were able to keep the Sharks off the scoreboard. Strong defensive play by everyone and great goaltending earned a well-deserved tie.

Then the Boltz took on Owen Sound. Eager to get on the scoreboard, Jenna Faulkner redirected a Renee Gallagher shot only 15 seconds into the game to give the Ice Boltz an early lead. The rest of the game was once again a defensive battle, both teams working their systems and both goalies standing their ground. The Boltz earned the 1-0 win with another strong effort.

With the first day behind them, the girls were very happy with the three points they had earned and this set them up with a chance to advance from their pool.

The third game of the round robin had the Boltz facing a tough North York team. With both teams in a situation where a loss

would end their season, the game didn’t disappoint the fans. The Boltz played their best game of the weekend but fell short, 1-0.

The loss was disappointing as the girls knew they had played well enough to advance from their pool as they had only allowed one goal against in the three games. Mixed emotions filled the dressing room after the game. Disappointment of the outcome, pride for their compete level and sadness for the graduating players and coaches.

The display of emotions was wonderful to witness and was made possible by years of volunteers and players working hard and being proud to be an Ice Bolt.

AA'S GET TO TOP 8Submitted by North Bay and District Girls Hockey Association – Ice Boltz

Alamos Gold Midget AA Ice Boltz headed south, entering their 2018 Provincial Championships ranked 19th in Ontario.

The girls opened against 3rd-ranked Oakville Hornets. Boltz struck first but Oakville tied it in the third to finish with a huge 1-1 tie.

Second game the Boltz played 17th-ranked Cambridge and came out with a 2-1 victory. Needing at least a tie to advance, the Boltz met the Scarborough Sharks, a team they hadn't beaten all season. The team came up big, placing second in their pool with the 1-1 tie.

Next, 6th-ranked Whitby. The back-and-forth action was fast and physical, both teams trading chances. In the end the Boltz won 2-1, disposing Whitby and advancing themselves to the quarter finals.

It was Oakville again. This time a 5-1 loss with two empty netters ended the Boltz season and a chance at the Nationals.

A fantastic year with thanks to sponsors Alamos Gold, RMTI, Trapper City Paving, Moose Cookhouse, Dumas Mining Construction, Delaney’s, Terry’s Independent and Thompson Real Estate.

ELITE FINISHES AT FINAL O-CUPSubmitted by Elite Alpine Ski Cross

The EASX athletes recently participated in the final race of the O-Cup Series at Beaver Valley Ski Club in Kimberley, Ontario.

Competitors from all over Ontario entered in this awesome event held on a FIS/Nor-Am track. The track was the longest and one of the  most demanding  tracks that we have seen.  The athletes trained on it beforehand to test strategy, and loved it. EASX met and mapped out the track, determining strategy and  a line that proved to be fast.

This  provincial  event held single athlete  time trial qualifications  in

the  morning, where the athletes' times determined their advancements.  All of the EASX athletes advanced to the final heat races in their categories. Unfortunately,  due to the timing of the event,  a few EASX  athletes were unable  to participate.  However,  EASX's athletes  that did compete, put down solid performances.

EASX's coaches, parents, and affiliations are  extremely  proud of all of the athletes.   The growth that has taken place in just

two years is  truly amazing. We are excited and look forward to continuing to grow our ski cross family.

SAIL INTO THE BLUE SKYSubmitted by Blue Sky Sailing Club

Learn to sail or join us for fun at Blue Sky Sailing Club!

The group's volunteers share club boats and enjoy social sails 5 times a week. The 2-hour sails focus on basic skills with like-minded leisure sailors where new members can also learn in a 'hands-on' environment.

Blue Sky owns 2 sailboats docked at the North Bay waterfront for member use, so you don’t need to own a boat.

Private skipper lessons are available that include safe motoring practices, docking and handling of the boat in moderate winds. No experience is necessary.

Lake Nipissing can be challenging. Our skippers watch our proprietary weather site and our website provides real-time updates every 2 minutes.

One can be more hands-on with cleaning, varnishing and preparing the boats for launch. On our ‘Launch Day’ in May, club volunteers get the boats into the water and, in fall, reluctantly take them out.

There's numerous special events and this year's plans include longer excursions down the French River.
