2011 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen - 1st Sunday in December

2011 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen

The committee has been busy trying to locate a new venue for this years show after being advised last year that GO Edwards Park would no longer be available for car shows.

We have kept true to our first day in December, and the show will be held on Sunday 4th December. We have decided to keep the show in the same vicinity, and with the help of the Town of Victoria park, we are now finalising the use of McCallum Park. We have taken on board feedback from previous shows and the actual show hours will be shorter, starting later in the morning and still finishing mid afternoon.

The 2011 Day of VW will be celebrating “50 Years of the Type 3” with extra trophies for that class this year.

Shortly we will have the details on our website, including a location map, with flyers and posters available and distribut-ed as soon as they are printed. As unusual we will need volunteers on the day to help share the load around and let everybody, club members and committee, some time to enjoy the day. If you have any ideas or know of any businesses that may be interested please let us know.

Shannons Insurance are once again our sponsor and we thank them for their long and continued support.

2011 /12 Membership Renewals

Yes, the renewals will be out shortly. Please return it by the 14th September for entry into the draw for a FREE membership for 2011/12. The draw will be held at the AGM on the 14th September.

While the club constitution states that memberships must be paid by 30 September, to participate at the Annual General Meeting for committee nominations and voting you will need to be a paid up member before the start of the AGM.

The fees for 2011/12 are a flat $50 for all membership types, with an additional levy of $10 if you wish to have a hard copy of the magazine posted to you from the October 2011 issue onwards.

The renewal will have an explanation attached with it for your information.

2011 VW Club Anniversary Hills

Road Trip DATE: SUNDAY 16th OCTOBER

MEETING POINT: FAST EDDY‟S CANNINGTON

TIME: 9:00am for a 9:30am sharp departure

For those unaware, the club‟s anniversary date is around 16th October and until recently the club has had an Anni-versary Kruize to celebrate the date.

This year, members Dave and Louise Beckley have planned a Hills Road Trip for the club to cele-brate our anniversary and to re-generate the annual event.

The start point will be Westfield Shopping Centre car park near Fast Eddys.

Those that wish to, can have an

early start with a coffee or breakfast with a newspaper at Fast Eddys before 9:00am. The rest need to be at the departure point by 9:00am for a 9:30am sharp departure.

The Hills Road Trip will take us on a leisurely tour through the Darling Scarp visiting some scenic locations, a cou-ple of wineries and an orchard before arriving at our desti-nation for lunch.

Time will allow us to do some wine-tasting and if you like them, buy some wines. The orchard sells fruit, cider and jams. There is also an opportunity for morning tea or cof-fee at one of the stops.

We will arrive for lunch around 1:00 -1:30pm, after which you return home at your leisure via your own route. We may pre-order at Fast Eddys to have our food ready when

we arrive.

More information in the next issue of the ViaWest and keep a look out on the „Events‟ calendar. There will be limited numbers, so a RSVP maybe required...so have a think about it ...and pencil it into your calendar if you wish.

Look out for the door prize...

Powerful Golf R

revealed as Cabriolet

Concept! Volkswagen has travelled to the larg-est GTI Meet in the world at Wörthersee with an entire fleet of new models, concept cars and accessory highlights. After revealing the new Golf GTI Edition 35 in a world debut, the company that invented the GTI will be pulling the veils off some other secret projects of a sporty nature:

Volkswagen is presenting the Golf R Cabriolet as a concept car with 270 PS of power and a top speed of 250 km/h; it is a fascinating thought experiment in cabrio dynamics. This powerful cabrio also demonstrates the inexhaustible potential of the Golf. But there is more news as well: other concept cars such as the Golf R Concept and the latest original accessories will make the GTI Meet a mecca for every Volkswagen fan.

Golf R Cabriolet concept: Volkswagen recently introduced the new Golf Cabriolet, and the designers and engineers of Volkswagen R GmbH have already come up with an ex-tremely sporty variant of this model:

the Golf R Cabriolet Concept. Like its closed top counterpart, the 199 kW / 270 PS Cabriolet concept races to the 100 km/h mark in less than six se-conds. Their top speeds are also iden-tical at 250 km/h. This makes the R Cabriolet the fastest open-top Golf ev-er. Even more impressive, however, is the engines tremendous torque 350 Newton metres from a low 2,500 rpm make this cabriolet an ideal cruiser.

Like the closed-top Golf R, the cabrio-let was lowered by 25mm via a sport chassis. A 17-inch brake system with internally ventilated discs at all wheels and blue painted high-performance brake callipers (including Rlogo) ena-bles impressive deceleration values. Making contact to the road surface on the Golf R Cabriolet Concept are 19-inch Talladega alloy wheels with size

235 tyres.

Naturally, the Golf R Cabriolet Concept also presents an especially sporty inte-rior concept. Motorsport shell seats in dark blue carbon leather, combined with high-end Nappa leather in Pure Grey, set the tone here. The backs of the shell seats are painted in luxurious black piano paint. Upholstery piping and decorative seams provide for col-our contrast. Carbon accents empha-sise the concepts technical-sporty character. The sand-blasted aluminium door sill plates with black piano paint inlays display finely crafted workman-ship.

Golf R Concept: Two variations of the Golf R Concept are also making strong visual state-ments at Wörthersee. Like the classic Golf R and the R Cabriolet on display at the meet, the two Golf R Concepts are also powered by a 2.0 litre turbo engine with the mentioned 199 kW / 270 PS, which is as powerful as it is efficient.

The first version of the Golf R Concept attracts attention with mid-tone Velvet Grey Metallic exterior, polished 19-inch Talladega alloy wheels, orange paint-ed brake callipers and carbon mirror caps.

The driver and front passenger have the pleasure of sitting on perfectly er-gonomic motorsport shell seats. Their

outer segments are upholstered in black Nappa leather with anthracite-coloured Nappa leather (Light Anthra-cite) used towards the inner surfaces in the area of the lateral seat supports and towards the head section. The cross-stitched centre panels of the seat and seatback gets an even lighter Nappa leather (Pure Grey). The back shell glistens in black piano paint. The piping on the side sections of the seat and head section provide a fine con-trast: the orange of the brake callipers is repeated here. Meanwhile, interior

accents match the look of the mirror caps: carbon. The same material is also used for the steering wheel, gear shift lever and the door sill plates. Black piano paint characterises the panels behind the inside door handles, the trim of the window controls and the trim of the gear shift grip.

The second model of the Golf R Con-cept is painted in the sophisticated Aplomb Blue. The 19-inch Glendale wheels that are new to the Golf line-up shine in Brilliant Silver. Once again, the exterior mirror caps, various interi-or accents and the door sill plates are made of carbon.

Parts of the back shells of the motor-sport shell seats also feature carbon. Black Nappa leather covers the outer areas of the seat and seatback surfac-es. Meanwhile, the ridge of the seats a continuous stripe that runs along the lateral seat and back supports con-sists of blue leather. The sport leather steering wheels inner segments and grip recesses were upholstered in car-bon leather; characteristic of this light-

weight material is its woven structure. Even the floor mats have a carbon look. The decorative seams here, as in the area of the parking brake lever, are styled in blue.

Volkswagen Passat CC: Unrivalled

Sustainability, Style and

Class Passat CC 125TDI with

BlueMotion Technology and Passat CC V6 FSI

Volkswagen Group Australia merges elegance, sophistication and sustaina-bility in one with the release of the

Passat CC 125TDI with BlueMotion Technology. Available on the 2.0 litre TDI engine, BlueMotion Technology uses Volkswagen‟s innovative Start/Stop system with brake energy recu-peration, offering the European manu-factures most fuel efficient and envi-ronmentally friendly Passat CC to date. In addition, the highly efficient regenerative braking system is now applied to both the Passat CC 125TDI and Passat CC V6 FSI, all at no extra cost to the buyer.

BlueMotion Technology has been in-troduced to the TDI variant, which has been updated to provide the most eco-nomical, comfortable and powerful engine. The effective 2.0 litre diesel engine, featuring the Start/Stop sys-tem and recuperation braking as standard equipment, creates 125kW of power @ 4200 rpm while offering a significantly reduced fuel consumption of just 5.7 litres per 100km (a de-crease of 0.6 litres). CO2 emission levels have also decreased to 150g/km.

The highly efficient automatic Start/Stop system is where real fuel savings are made in the Passat CC 125TDI. The system is operational through the vehicles brake pedal. When the driver depresses the brake, the engine shuts down and a Start/Stop symbol illumi-nates on the multifunction display. In order to move away, the driver simply releases the brake and the engine restarts automatically. The system can be deactivated through the press of a button located on the centre console, if necessary.

2011 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen - 1st Sunday in December

The regenerative braking system, in-troduced at the new Passat launch in April, is now applied to both the Passat CC 125TDI with BlueMotion Technolo-gy and Passat CC V6 FSI . The regen-erative braking system helps to utilise energy that would otherwise be lost during braking. In deceleration and

braking phases, the alternator‟s volt-age is boosted and used for bulk re-charging of the car‟s battery. Thanks to alternator control, it is possible to lower alternator voltage and even switch it off entirely, thus reducing engine load and improving fuel consumption.

Just as innovative as the powertrain technologies is the driver assistance system which can be optioned on both Passat CC models. This driver assis-tance system offers Volkswagen‟s ad-vanced “Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)” with Front Assist and City Emergency Brake (City EB) function. Additional optional high-end technolo-gies include Park Assist 2 and Lane Assist. The convenience of Volkswagen‟s Adaptive Chassis Con-trol system comes standard on both the 125TDI with BlueMotion Technolo-gy and the V6 FSI models.

Combining these state-of-the-art sys-tems with the slick styling of the Passat CC - panoramic glass roof, frameless coupé doors, 18-inch “Daytona” alloy wheels, chrome ac-cents (interior and exterior), four ergo-nomic sport seats (individual seating system in rear) with Nappa leather as standard, a three-spoke leather steer-ing wheel and automatic headlights - along with its range of unsurpassed safety features such as ESP with ABS, ASR and EDL, Volkswagen has again

raised the standard in its class.

The new Passat CC 125TDI with BlueMotion Technology and Passat CC V6 FSI is now available through dealers.

The Scirocco R – conceptualized by Volkswagen R GmbH – is an impres-sive performance package with a bril-liant engine and chassis, unique looks and exclusive features. Advantages of boosted TSI engine available in the

Scirocco R are very high power and torque values with significantly re-duced fuel consumption.

The 2.0-litre TSI in the Scirocco R at-tains a maximum power of 188 kW at 6,000 rpm. Its maximum torque – a hefty 330 Newton metres – is available over an immense range of engine speed: 2,500 to 5,000 rpm. This makes for an agile responsive engine, which is able to summon torque in the blink of an eye at almost any speed.

The Scirocco R can be optioned with Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) and is available with a specially tuned sport chassis and XDL (Extended Electronic Differential Lock) as standard equip-ment. The latter refers to a functional extension of the Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) that is integrated in the ESP system and reduces traction loss.

The Scirocco R is also available with Adaptive Chassis Control which comes as standard. This system continually adjusts damping of individual wheels to roadway conditions based on sig-nals from three body sensors and dis-placement sensors at each wheel. During acceleration, braking and steer-ing processes, chassis damping is stiffened in fractions of a second to optimally meet vehicle dynamic re-quirements. By making these automat-ic adjustments, Adaptive Chassis Con-trol significantly increases comfort in driving situations whose dynamics are

less challenging, resolving the conflict in goals between a stiff sporty tuning and a comfortable one. Besides the “Normal” mode, the driver can also choose the “Sport” or “Comfort” mode.

The design features of the Scirocoo R reflects the motto “form follows func-tion”; the front end has three large air inlets integrated with large louvres in the bumper customized for the Sciroc-co R, which engineers designed for optimal cooling of the brakes and en-gine. The rear image of this car is dominated by a large roof edge spoiler and a prominent glossy black diffuser in the lower bumper area that shows typical R-styling. One tailpipe on the left and the other on the right define the border between the black diffuser and the bumper painted in body col-our. The side view is characterized by powerfully styled side skirts painted in body colour. The milled, polished wheels are as visually unique and of-fer a very attractive look at the large 17-inch braking system with its glossy black calipers and R-logo. Like the brake calipers, the outside mirrors of the Scirocco R are always painted a glossy black, independent of the body colour. Sporty designed 19-inch alloy wheels (“Talladega” type) with size 235/35 tyres further enhances the look of the Scirocco R.

The interior of the Scirocco R presents an altogether refined appearance. As is typical of all R-models, special inte-rior accents, sport seats and numer-ous other dynamic features are ap-plied

Full specifications and pricing of the Scirocco R will be released at launch in early 2012.

4MOTION View: Caddy 4MOTION Press Kit

Caddy Maxi now available with state-of-the-art 4MOTION technology: All-wheel drive first available in Caddy‟s segment

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has announced the launch of its Caddy Maxi Life and the Caddy Maxi Van now available with innovative 4MO-TION all-wheel drive technology. The advanced new vehicle will make its debut at the Australian Inter-national Motor Show.

4MOTION technology combined with the Direct Shift Gear-box (DSG) was first introduced to the Volkswagen Commercial Ve-hicle range with the facelift of the T5 Transporter and People Mov-ers. Now this so-phisticated technolo-gy is available on the Caddy Maxi vehicle range further cementing its position as a market leader.

The driving force of the Caddy‟s all-wheel drive system, 4MOTION, is dis-tributed via the latest generation of electronically controlled Haldex clutch. The Caddy 4MOTION will be offered with the highly-efficient 2.0 litre TDI engine, delivering 103 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque at 1,500 to 2,500 rpm.

The Caddy 4MOTION is available in two versions. A long wheel base panel van in the form of a TDI320 Caddy Maxi Van 4MOTION or as a people mover, the seven-seater TDI320 Cad-dy Maxi Life Comfortline 4MOTION. Both models are fitted with dual sliding doors, as standard.

The versatile Caddy range is the only model in its market segment which has an efficient six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) with Hill Start Assist as standard. Moreover, unique to this

market is the extended wheelbase offering a significantly increased cargo capacity.

Design The Caddy Maxi's has the Volkswagen family face front section. The radiator grille and headlights form a visual single unit. The horizontal lines of the grille continue all the way into the headlight clusters, adding to the stylish appearance. The height of the Caddy Maxi Van 4MOTION is measured at 1.836 metres, with the Caddy Max Life 4MOTION marked at 1.886 metres. The length (4.876 me-tres) and width (1.794 metres) is uni-form across both models.

Interior and Exterior Features The Caddy 4MOTION is equipped with the latest generation ESP, front airbags and daytime-running lights as standard. With the versatile seven-seat Caddy Maxi Life 4MOTION, the second and third rows of seating are removable offerings up to 3,880 litres of cargo capacity.

The seat covers, which are in a stylish anthracite pattern, in the Caddy 4MO-TION models create a particularly re-fined look. The interior has precise and clear instruments and a sporty, threespoke steering wheel. Similarly, the central console now houses user friendly controls for the manual or au-tomatic (Climatronic) air conditioning system. The interior of the Caddy 4MOTION models has been enhanced

by the inclusion of a heightadjustable central armrest (in the front) and front seats, both of which have been fitted with drawers underneath offering two additional storage compartments.

In terms of functionality, the range of features in the TDI320 Caddy Maxi Life 4MOTION include: the RCD310 radio/CD system equipped with addi-tional interfaces, „Climatronic‟ dual zone air conditioning and a multi-function display (including onboard computer), cruise control, leather steering wheel with multifunction con-trols, and a Light & Sight package (including dusk sensing headlights with „coming home‟ function, rain sensing wipers and auto dimming rear view mirror). Exterior features include

roof rails (100 kg load capacity), painted bumpers, 16-

inch alloy wheels a chrome trim set

(including radiator

grille, fog lamp rims and top

section of the

number plate recess), H7

headlights, tinted side windows (from the B-

pillar), tinted rear window and up to 3,880 litres of load space.

Engine The TDI320 Caddy 4MOTION‟s 2.0 litre engine delivering 103 kW is ex-tremely fuel-efficient. Powered by this engine, just 6.7 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres for the Caddy Maxi Van and 6.8 litres of diesel per 100 kilome-tres for the Caddy Maxi Life (177 g/km CO2 / 179 g/km CO2) are required. At practically any engine speed the TDI also excels with outstanding tractabil-ity, delivering a maximum torque of 320 Newton metres from as low as 1,500 rpm. Maximum power output of 103kW is available at 4,200 rpm.

represents state-of-the-art technology. The latest generation of the multi-disc clutch with its optimised friction prop-erties manufactured by the Swedish system partner Haldex, sets new standards in terms of traction, safety, comfort and efficiency. In addition to the fourth generation electronically controlled Haldex clutch, specific 4MOTION features also include a two-part drive shaft, an exhaust system adapted to the rear axle differential and the drive shaft, a special fuel tank (arranged as a so-called saddle tank over the drive shaft) and reinforce-ments in the rear longitudinal chassis beams.

How the Haldex clutch works: The Caddy 4MOTION‟s electro-hydraulic Haldex clutch runs in an oil bath. The multi-plate clutch system itself is f langed onto the rear axle dif-ferential. Oil is fed via an electric pump to a hydraulic reservoir, which has a working pressure of 30 bar. A control module computes the ideal drive torque for the rear axle and con-trols, via a valve, how much oil pres-sure is applied to the working pistons of the multi-plate clutch. The contact pressure at the clutch plates rises in proportion to the desired torque at the rear axle. The amount of torque that is transferred can, in the process, be infinitely varied in-line with the degree of pressure applied to the clutch plates. The latest generation 4MO-TION system used in the Caddy works independently of any slip, as the work-ing pressure is always available.

Transmission Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is the only manufacturer that offers a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) in this segment. Taking into account the maximum torque that needs to be handled for each engine, a 6-speed DSG is used in the TDI320 Caddy Maxi 4MOTION. Features of DSG are extreme economy and dynamic shift-ing of the gears. The 6-speed DSG has a dual clutch that runs in an oil bath and has the potential of reducing fuel consumption and therefore, emis-sions.

The New Generation

Jetta Is Nearly

Here Larger and more comfortable, sustain-able and dynamic, and with a bold new styling

The new Jetta is an entirely new vehi-cle. The appearance of its fully galva-nised body shows this most emphati-cally. The new Jetta impresses as an independent vehicle and makes great strides forward in both concept and styling. The new model is 4.74 metres long, 1.47 metres tall and 1.78 metres wide.

This makes the Volkswagen 19 centi-metres longer than the previous mod-el. The inter play of its exterior dimen-sions generates a powerful ratio of proportions. In parallel, the new Volkswagen “Design DNA” sharpens its style. This has resulted in clear pre-cise lines and athletically muscular surfaces, which give the sedan an ele-gant and dynamic style.

Just like its exterior styling, the high-quality impression made by the interior bridges the gap to the next highest class, significantly increasing the Jet-ta‟s lead over its rivals. Inside, the new Jetta offers an unparalleled perfection in details and – as a common concep-tual thread – self-explanatory controls.

Designers and engineers have also crafted the interior right down to the last detail; now, the five-seater‟s quali-ty and perfection in details clearly go beyond class boundaries. The extend-ed wheelbase of the five-seat Jetta

has enabled a rear seating layout that is appreciably more comfortable. Compared to the previous model, leg-room has increased significantly.

German engineering and craftsman-ship ref lect the highest level of quality and efficient technology and the new Jetta is a prime example of this. The new Jetta will be offered with the choice of TSI direct injection petrol and TDI turbo diesel power plants, all which are perfectly matched with ei-ther manual or Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmissions.

As with every Volkswagen, the Jetta is offered with a comprehensive network of safety components. Electronic Sta-bilisation Program (ESP), Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) and Elec-tronic Differential Lock (EDL), six air-bags, front safety optimised head re-straints to reduce whiplash, height-adjustable head restraints for all three rear passengers comes as standard in the Jetta.

Also standard, and for the first time in a Jetta, is the special Crash Impact Sound Sensor (CISS) system. This

system detects crash intensity and ensures that the airbags deploy to their proper positions faster than ever.

The new Jetta addresses the automo-tive challenges of our time better than the vast majority of the competition − with a remarkably comfortable interior, a stylish and powerful design, and maximum efficiency.

35 Years Of The Golf GTI:

Volkswagen Celebrates 35 Years Of The GTI With A Special Edi-

tion Golf GTI Edition 35 Has Powerful 173 kW And Economi-

cal 8.2 l/100 km

35 years of the Golf GTI! Volkswagen is celebrating the anniversary of this icon with the new Golf GTI Edition 35. With 173 kW of power (18 kW more than the normal GTI), acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds and special looks, this special edition GTI will be a collector‟s item from day one.

Back in the summer of 1976 – when the very first production GTI was launched – no one ever would have surmised what Volkswagen had just unleashed. Some things simply cannot

be planned – icons included. And so the first Golf GTI surprised everyone: buyers, competitors, the carmaker and all those drivers of other sports cars who had never heard of such a thing from Volkswagen, but were now being passed by it on the open road. Since then, the GTI advanced to become the most successful compact sports car in automotive history. 5,000 GTIs were planned – yet the GTI of our day is now approaching the production mile-stone of two million units.

The new Golf GTI Edition 35 is prov-ing the awesome potential of this auto-mobile. As always, it has front-wheel drive and offers superior traction thanks to its XDL extended electronic differential lock. The Volkswagen con-verts its maximum torque of 300 New-ton metres (2,400 to 5,200 rpm) into forward propulsion. After just 6.6 se-conds, the Golf GTI Edition 35 passes the 100 km/h mark. No other GTI be-fore it has been this dynamic. An op-tional 6-speed DSG can shift gears in a fraction of a second.

Exterior of the Golf GTI Edition 35 in detail For the past 35 years, Volkswagen has been developing its Golf GTI icon in careful steps, refining its shape like a diamond, making its forms more pre-

cise, perfecting its handling, and mak-ing its engine performance more dy-namic. The GTI Edition 35 is no ex-ception.

Visually, the GTI Edition 35 can be recognised by its new bumper design in front, which is equipped with bi-xenon headlights with dynamic corner-ing and LED daytime running lights. The car‟s aerodynamics were im-proved by winglets (air flow surfaces) positioned at lower outboard areas in front, and the mid-section of the front spoiler was kept in black. On the car‟s sides, it is the glossy black mirror housings, side sill extensions in body colour and the „35‟edition badge on the front wings that identify the anni-versary model. All Golf GTI Edition 35 cars are also equipped with smoked LED rear lights, an LED-illuminated license plate at the rear and smoked rear windows. In Australia, the Golf GTI Edition 35 will only be available in a five-door body style.

In addition, Volkswagen has de-veloped new, standard 18-inch "Watkins Glen" alloy wheels for the Golf GTI Edition 35 (named after a US racetrack in the state of New York). The wheels, fitted with 225/40 R18 tyres, are avail-able in one light-coloured version ("Silver") and can be ordered in one dark-coloured version ("Grey Metallic") as an option. The five spokes on this wheel are painted black, while the rim itself is ma-chine-polished.

White, red, black and grey have been classic GTI colours for 35 years. Natu-rally, they are also offered on the GTI Edition 35. To be specific, Volkswagen Australia is offering this Golf in two gloss colours "Candy White" and "Tornado Red", one metallic paint"Carbon Steel Grey" and in the pearl effect "Deep Black".

Interior of the Golf GTI Edition 35 The interior was customised with the gear shift grip in the classic golf ball look of the first generation GTI, new decorative strips in the cockpit area and the door trim panels ("Black Ar-ray" type), special door sill plates with worked-in „35‟logo, safety belts with red stripes and a „35‟ integrated in the front head restraints of the top sport seats ("Jacky" style). As an option,

customers can choose "Vienna" leath-er appointed seat upholstery in "Titan Black" combined with active-breathing microfibres (likewise black) for the centre seat panels.

The „35‟ logo appears on the backs of the seats, and all decorative seams of this seat design are in “Flash Red". Also always in red: decorative seams around the three spoke sport steering wheel, the hand brake and gear shift trim as well as the borders of the f loor mats.

The engine of the Golf GTI Edition 35 With 173 kW of power (+18 kW com-pared to Golf GTI) and maximum torque of 300 Nm (+20 Nm), the Golf GTI Edition 35 delivers impressive performance by any measure. Its ac-celeration is the usual statistical

measures, but much more important and typical of this GTI is its relentless torque. Acoustically, the GTI already has a full sporty sound, but new tuning of the sound actuator makes it even sportier in this special edition.

1,984 cm3 displacement. The engine employed in the Golf GTI Edition 35 is a turbocharged petrol direct-injection engine of the EA113 engine series.

This engine series is also found in the all-wheel drive Golf R. The two vehicles share the same base engine. The 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine builds up its propul-sive power via a tur-bocharger with inter-cooling.

The GTI engine is controlled by a fully electronic engine management system.

The engine‟s pistons are equipped with reinforced gudgeon pins. The connecting rod was also designed with greater strength, so that it can reliably transfer high torque to the crankshaft. The cylinder block was reinforced to handle the extremely high engine forc-es that occur.

Despite all of its dynamic perfor-mance, the Golf GTI Edition 35 is also very fuel efficient, offering a respecta-ble combined fuel consumption of 8.3 litres per 100 km with a manual gear-box.

In the DSG version, these two values are improved to 8.2 litres per 100 km.

Power transmission in the Golf GTI Edition 35 The engine‟s power is transferred via

either a manual 6-speed gearbox or an optional 6-speed DSG transmission. For 35 years, the GTI has been driven via the front axle. The standard XDL extended electronic differential lock ensures that the rubber remains on the tyres and does not end up on the street. Moreover, XDL significantly im-proves handling properties. As soon as the electronics detect that the front wheel at the inside of the bend is ex-cessively unloaded during fast driving, the ESP hydraulics build up braking pressure at this wheel to restore opti-mal traction. That is, XDL acts as a transverse differential lock that com-pensates for the typical understeering of front-wheel drive vehicles during quick cornering. This results in more precise and neutral driving behaviour.

Running gear of the Golf GTI Edition 35 Like all GTIs, the Edition 35 is equipped with a sport chassis; the body sits 15 mm lower than on a con-ventional Golf. Working in front is the familiar MacPherson suspension with helical springs and telescoping damp-ers. At the rear, the multi-link suspen-sion ensures that the ESP system sel-dom needs to be activated. The Volkswagen‟s four disc brakes are also extremely durable and strong: braked from 100 km/h, the Golf GTI Edition 35 reaches a standstill after about 35 me-tres.

The Golf GTI Edition 35 is a very lim-ited offering. Pricing starts at $43,490 for Golf GTI Edition 35 with 6-speed manual transmission and from $45,990 for Golf GTI Edition 35 with 6-speed DSG transmission.)

Polo GTI claims

MOTOR „Bang For Your

Bucks‟ Award Volkswagen‟s mighty Polo GTI has crushed its opponents in MOTOR magazine‟s annual „Bang For Your Bucks‟ Award.

The Polo GTI was hands down the performance bargain of the year – and would have won the last five year as well -should it have been amongst the previous years‟ competitors.

“We pumped its Bang and Buck scores into our formula for the last five years and it won, every time,” the judges at MOTOR wrote.

“When we set up our formula, you were never supposed to be able to buy this much performance for just $27,990”.

The winner of the „Bang For Your Bucks‟ Award is decided predominant-ly on the competitor‟s ability over sev-eral categories such as speed, perfor-mance, dynamics and handling. The Polo GTI owns it success thanks to Volkswagen‟s clever downsizing of the twincharged 1.4-litre TSI engine (turbo plus supercharging) and the extremely efficient 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG).

“We are pleased the judges at MO-TOR magazine appreciated the Polo GTI‟s all-round- potential and obvious-ly its affordable performance,” said Anke Koeckler, Volkswagen Group

Australia‟s Managing Director.

“With the Golf GTI winning last year‟s „Bang for Your Bucks Award‟, the Polo GTI sure lives up to the legendary badge with its superior handling prop-erties combined with uncompromising engine responsiveness and impressive safety and economy figures”.

Hat Trick for Volkswagen at Auto Express

New Car

Awards 2011 Volkswagen has won a trio of honours at the Auto Express New Car Awards 2011, with class victories for the Golf and Golf GTI, as well as a triumph for the BlueMotion range.

The awards recognise the best cars on sale today, as judged by the editorial team at Auto Express. Both new and existing models are eligible and the best vehicles in every class are select-ed for an award.

For the third year in a row, the Golf has been awarded the title of Best Compact Family Car. Auto Express acting editor Graham Hope said: “The all-conquering Golf has turned winning Auto Express road tests into an art form and the beauty of the handsome hatchback is that there is something in the range for everyone. Whichever model you choose, you‟re guaranteed the best cabin quality in the sector, as well as superb refinement and afforda-ble running costs.”

The Golf, now in its sixth generation, has accounted for over 28 million sales worldwide since it was launched in 1974, making it the most popular mod-el Volkswagen has ever produced, surpassing the 21 million sales achieved by the original Beetle.

The second award was won by the most iconic iteration of the Golf – the Golf GTI – which retained the title of Best Hot Hatch for the third year run-ning. Despite 35 years having passed since the Golf GTI was launched, the car that defines the hot hatch remains the benchmark in its class.

Graham Hope added: “The Golf‟s tal-ented underpinnings can easily handle the GTI‟s extra power, and its spa-cious cabin and high-quality trimmings help to make our winner both hugely desirable and very easy to live with.”

The third award went to Volkswagen‟s BlueMotion range, the umbrella term for a raft of innovations that help to cut the cost of motoring by making every drop of fuel take you further.

Graham Hope commented: “The win-ner of our inaugural Green Award could have been a car, a person or a piece of technology – but in the end it went to an entire brand. The Volkswagen BlueMotion range takes the prize for the way its economy boosting kit delivers real-world gains to consumers with so few compromis-es.”

The Auto Express award adds to the list of accolades claimed by Volkswagen in the past year from such prestigious titles as What Car?, Top Gear, Fleet News, Honest John and BusinessCar.

VW Golf is Most Afforda-

ble Small Car The multi-award-winning Volkswagen Golf is Australia‟s most affordable small car to according to a compre-hensive vehicle cost survey conducted by the Royal Automobile Association of WA (RAC).

The RAC‟s 2011 Vehicle Operating Costs survey of 95 popular models found that owning a Volkswagen Golf 77TSI is not only good to drive but affordable to own.

Ownership costs were calculated on a new vehicle over five years driven 15,000km each year.

The survey‟s main criteria included depreciations, fuel consumption and loan interest charges. Tyres, registra-tion, servicing were also factored into the calculations.

The Golf 77TSI came out in front of some small car rivals such as the Hyundai i30, Holden Cruze and Toyo-ta Corolla.

As the 2009 World Car of the Year and Australia‟s Best Cars winner, the Golf has developed an enviable repu-tation for delivering outstanding tech-nology, safety and driving enjoyment.

Volkswagen Group Australia‟s manag-ing director, Anke Koeckler, was pleased to hear the results of the sur-vey.

“The Golf 77TSI has made entry into the Golf range not only more afforda-ble but very cost effective over the life of the car. We are pleased to see that our products efficiency and affordabil-ity is being recognized.

“We know that our customers will like their cars but we want to make sure they continue to appreciate them and benefit from their outstanding efficien-cy through lower cost of ownership, said Ms Koeckler.
