Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc) 1955 - 2015...our 60th Anniversary is coming!

Hi Club Members and Readers……

I am writing this at our monthly meeting, Looking around we have another 2 new faces here. This is the

biggest committee in many years. The more people we have the better for everyone, the load is

shared. We have great team! We’ll need to find a new meeting room to accommodate us soon. On this

note a big thank you goes out to the salesmen at John Hughes Volkswagen in Victoria Park for their wel-

coming attitude and letting us take over their staff room on the Wednesday nights, cheers Guys.

At the recent AGM we voted on “Member of the Year” this went to Graham McCloud. We decided on

awarding “G-Mac” as he is fondly nicknamed, that includes free membership for next your, based on his

attendance record to the club events over the past year. He is always the life and soul of the party and

helps out where needed. G-Mac thanks for supporting the club and all the memorable moments!

Day of the Volkswagen is only around the corner - 30th November to be exact.

This is a friendly reminder that if you intend of having your car judged in the show n shine – show some

respect to the judges and clean your car. Get those chip packets and empty bottles in the bin and vacu-

um your shag pile carpet, clean your engine and wheels, dust your dash, and wash n polish that paint

and buff your chrome (if you have any). Jokes aside it takes them a lot of effort so don’t waste their

time they want to enjoy the show too. There will be a gold coin donation, which will go to the chosen

Club charity the DuchenneFoundation.

We are expecting a big turnout this year so please be patient, we’ll get you all in as quick as possible,

respect the traffic marshals instructions, and most importantly have fun and enjoy the Day!

Name: Corey Mill Family: 43 years old, married to Fiona and we

have 1 adult child (18)

First VW: 1973 orange stock standard kombi,

owned between 1988 & 1989

Best place to cruise: We live just north of Bun-

bury, so are keen on the south west runs.

Current Vehicle(s): Returned to the VW scene

last year when I bought a 1964 Beetle for some

fun, a bit of a hobby and to keep me out of the

beer fridge. (not really working on the last one)

We are the fourth owners of the beetle.

Took the Beetle off the road for 2 months (ish) and

fixed up the usual rust spots, put 2 ½ inch drop

spindles, repainted in the original blue with white

two tone below the window levels and replaced the

carpet with a new one.

Other than the above it is a stock standard 1200.

On the wish list is new door cards, seat covers and

some lower profile tyres for the front as they are

rubbing a little when I turn. (Can’t seem to find

165 -50- 15 tyres so if anyone knows, give me a

bell)

It was never going to be a show car by any stretch

of the imagination, but I’m pretty happy with how

it has turned out so far and are keen to get it out

and about.

I paid $2,800 for him and have spent about anoth-

er $1,500 all up.

Would love another project, maybe a Baja bug but

the boss said I would have tell sell one of my other

toys, now that’s just crazy talk if you ask me.

It’s amazing all the thumbs up and toots I get

when driving it around and every time I stop

someone has a story of either theirs, their dads or

grandads beetle hey used to have. They are defi-

nitely a universally loved car by all ages.

Hello members...remember our “Member’s Profile” page...well they are back. Get yours in soon.

Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc) 1955 - 2015...our 60th Anniversary is coming!

The Western Australian

2014 Day of the Volkswagen is being held

on Sunday the 30th No-vember. The venue is the lovely Taylor Reserve in

Victoria Park with the Swan river and the Perth City

skyline making a great back

drop to the show.

This year we are celebrating

40 years of the Volkswagen

Golf. The colour for the show

this year is grey so get out

your Volkswagen Club Tee

shirt – If you don’t have one

there will some on sale along

with the recently acquired Club

Car badges, Pin badges, Key

rings and the new 2015 Calen-

dar all under the new mar-

quee.

The gates open at 08:00 am

and close at 10am until the

presentation proceedings are

over at approximately 2pm.

This years categories for the

show and shine have not

changed from last year...but

we have just added one for

the best Golf on the Day.

See opposite page...

We have decided to slightly

tweak the layout of the field

mainly the parking direction

and better traffic manage-

ment.

As last year judging will be

conducted by a team of 5 vol-

unteers before your car is

parked...please have your en-

try form complete.

There is a gold coin donation

for those wanting their vehicle

judged – this goes to our club

charity this year, the

a very worthy cause! Collec-

tion tins will be at the club

tent throughout the day too.

We will have food and drink

vendors to keep you replen-

ished including the Lions Club

sausage sizzle, ice-cream van,

coffee van and Boost Juice is

back. MMMMmmmmm

The tradition of the face paint-

ing going in the “kids area”,

and it should go without men-

tioning the inarguable

“colouring in competition”

which is always a hit, will be

on again. A free Bouncy Cas-

tle will be present for the en-

ergetic ones.

We encourage swap and sell

too, so if you want to load up

your ride with those parts that

may help somebody else finish

theirs off, bring them along we

do not charge for this. If you

are looking for a part or a bit

of Merchandise bring your

wallet or purse along.

Also don’t forget our friends at

The Formula Vee Associa-

tion of WA, they will be along

with some fine examples of

their Formula Vees for you to

look over and ask questions

about...it really is a fun sport

for all ages.

Don’t let the words “Show and

Shine” put you off parking on

the field if you feel your vehi-

cle isn’t to show condition, this

is a gathering of Volkswagen

enthusiasts and their cars. Let

people see your work in pro-

gress or your daily driver –

don’t be shy and come and

join the display.

Don’t limit your car to a VW

either, all Volkswagen affili-

ates are welcome...Audi,

Skoda, Porsche etc.

Thankyou to all our sponsors,

especially Shannons Insur-

ance...visit their stand.

If you can’t commit to the

“Lock in” an overflow car park

is open so you can leave when

you want. The Lock in is for

the safety of the patrons and

lets face it – its only 4 hours

for one day of the year.

This is always a great day,

which amazes me every year

with the turnout of different

vehicles, we are expecting

over 150 to drive through or

be trailered through the gate.

Once the gates open for de-

parture at around 2pm don’t

feel like you have to shoot off,

stick around for a chat a cold

one and enjoy the day. Be

safe on your journey – See

you there!

Jamie Barrett

on behalf of the Committee

of VW Club of WA

There was over 540 entrants, I have never seen so many Volkswagen in one place. The street that was closed for the parade and the Volkswagen were lined up well before coming in to the main town. After the show they all cruse back to Valla beach tourist park were there was the swap meet. It was hard not to buy anything at the swap meet as there was some good gear there. Patrick Next Valla VW Spectacular will be in 2016.

Volkswagen updated

Scirocco R

arrives in Australia

40 years after Volkswagen’s orig-

inal Scirocco sports coupé made

its debut at the Geneva Motor

Show, the revised version of the

thirdgeneration range-topping

Scirocco R has now arrived in

Australia.

Positioned between the five-door

Golf GTI and five-door Golf R, the

Scirocco R offers another distinc-

tive and emotive design within

the Volkswagen performance car

range.

Externally, the Scirocco R’s shape

has been refined and modernised

with new headlights and tail

lights, as well as revised bumper

styling.

The revised front bumper fea-

tures aerodynamic ‘blades’ in the

outer section, like those on the

latest-generation Golf GTI, with

integrated indicator LED lights.

As the standalone Scirocco model

in Australia, the Scirocco R

comes with its own unique exteri-

or styling kit; matte chrome-look

door mirror caps; Bi-Xenon head-

lights with LED daytime running

lights; 19-inch ‘Cadiz’ alloy

wheels; black brake calipers with

‘R’ logo; sports suspension;

adaptive chassis control; XDL

electronic differential; R-specific

sports seats; and a multifunction

trip computer.

Inside, the dashboard has been

updated, with new-look dials and

an auxiliary instrument cluster

above the centre console, con-

sisting of a chronometer, charge

pressure and oil temperature

gauges – a tribute to the 1974

model.

The updated Scirocco R also re-

ceives a number of safety and

convenience systems as stand-

ard, including a Rear View Cam-

era (RVC) and front and rear

parking sensors.

The updated Scirocco R retains

the same powertrain with minor

revisions to improve consumption

and broaden the range of the

torque output.

Deep front airdams and a razor-

thin grille element with gloss

black inserts are framed by dis-

tinctive chrome-backed headlight

units.

Also of note: the Volkswagen

roundel is not in its traditional

position in the grille but rather on

the bonnet.

Further back, pronounced

haunches that sweep over the

rear wheelarches are accentuated

by a tapered sill line that pinches

around the middle of the vehicle.

These haunches f low into the

slim high intensity rear light units

and a wide hatchback boot, on

top of which is a subtle aerody-

namic wing. The Scirocco has

frameless doors, a feature that

further accentuates the car’s

sporting credentials.

Although configured to appear

low and wide, the Scirocco’s de-

signers moved away from using a

traditional coupé’s sloping roof.

Instead the Scirocco has a steep

hatch with a long roof and verti-

cal tailgate, which brings two key

advantages. The first is in design

where the car’s unusual propor-

tions give it a squat but purpose-

ful appearance; the second and

arguably more important, is that

the upright rear and short over-

hangs give the Scirocco substan-

tial space in the rear for two

adults plus luggage. This means

the car is not only stylish but is

also practical, and capable of

seating four above-average-

height adults in comfort.

One of the less obvious revisions

introduced in the 2014 Scirocco R

is that the Volkswagen badge on

the tailgate now functions as a

handle.

(Continued on page 35)

November 2014 Via West Page 35

Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc) 1955 - 2015...our 60th Anniversary is coming!

Four sculpted sports seats offer

comfort and support for all four

passengers, while non-

detachable headrests ensure

safety at all times for rear seat

occupants. A generous amount of

interior space is also afforded by

these seats. As they are posi-

tioned low in the car in true

sports coupé style, they allow

interior heights of 953mm in the

front and 924mm in the rear,

meaning ample headroom is

available.

The rear seats can also be split

(50:50) and folded to increase

cargo space when necessary. A

maximum 1006 litres is available

in the Scirocco.

For convenience, the front seats

offer rear passengers easy entry

and exit to the back seats. When

unlatched, they not only tip but

also slide forward to maximise

entry room. However, when they

are put back, they automatically

return to their previously set po-

sitions, meaning driver and pas-

senger do not have to readjust

their seats.

Naturally the two front seats are

adjustable for height and reach,

as is the steering wheel, while

electrically adjustable lumbar

support is offered as an option

with leather upholstery.

In the cabin, the driver is treated

to clear, easy-to-read displays

with chrome-ringed and white

backlit dials, plus ergonomically-

designed switchgear. The

RNS510 unit with hard disc-

supported navigation system is

standard in the Scirocco R. The

system’s hard disc drive allows

routes to be recorded while driv-

ing and re-traced, and songs to

be stored and re-played. The

dash-mounted unit is also a

touchscreen, giving easy access

to all stereo functions, and in-

cludes a six-CD autochanger, SD

card reader and connection for

external multimedia sources, for

example an iPod or MP3 player.

Other design features include a

contoured, flat-bottomed multi-

function sports steering wheel

and distinctive triangular grab

handles on the doors. The interi-

or is light, airy and surprisingly

roomy, while the option of an

electrically-operated tilting pano-

ramic sunroof emphasises the

feeling of spaciousness. In the

top centre of the dashboard is a

pod containing three sports in-

strument dials: oil temperature,

turbo boost pressure and a chro-

nometer.

The 188 kW TSI engine makes its

return to the updated Scirocco R.

Like all TSI engines, the Scirocco

R’s powerplant combines the effi-

ciency of direct-injection with the

power of turbocharging.

The 1,984cm 16-valve, four-

cylinder engine develops a maxi-

mum power of 188 kW at 6,000

rpm. Its maximum torque – a

hefty 330 Nm – is available over

an immense range of engine

speed: 2,400 to 5,200 rpm.

This makes for agile responsive-

ness of the engine, which is able

to summon torque at practically

any speed range. The engine’s

acoustic output impressively un-

derscores its special kind of pow-

er development.

The exhaust system itself is de-

signed as a double-flow system.

Dual oval chrome tailpipes ex-

tend out from the bumper.

The Scirocco R once again is

available with either a six-speed

manual or dual clutch DSG trans-

mission, both offering optimal

performance and efficiency.

The Scirocco’s suspension system

uses strut-type suspension at the

front and a multi-link layout at

the rear.

The Scirocco R features a sophis-

ticated braking system, with ABS

and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation

Program) as standard. Ventilated

discs are fitted at the front with

solid discs at the rear (253mm).

The Scirocco R is fitted with large

diameter brake discs of 345mm

at the front, and 310mm at the

rear.

The Scirocco R has a very low

centre of gravity which presents

some challenges. One of these is

to retain adequate headroom for

the occupants within the low

overall vehicle height. Part of the

solution is the incorporation of

the tailgate hinges inside blisters

in the roof, thereby allowing the

roofline to be lowered and en-

hancing the dynamic appearance

of the Scirocco without compro-

mising practicality.

The new VW

Tiguan

range ...the versatility of an SUV

and the agility of a sports car

New dynamic flagship model and

new diesel engine enhance the

popular compact SUV from

Volkswagen

Since its Australian launch in

2008, the Tiguan has carved its

own path in the hotly-contested

SUV market.

Now, Volkswagen Australia has

updated its Tiguan range with a

raft of new standard technology

and features and added a more

powerful diesel engine model

while also delivering a striking

new flagship model.

All models come standard with a

Rear View Camera (RVC), a 6.5

inch colour touchscreen audio

system and a leather multi-

function steering wheel, Multi-

Function Display (MFD Plus) and

fatigue detection.

The range includes four engines:

three petrol and one diesel en-

gine.

Petrol engines include the twin-

charged 1.4-litre TSI with 118

kW, a 2.0-litre TSI with 132 kW

and a 2.0-litre TSI with 155 kW.

The new 2.0-litre TDI engine

adds an impressive 27 kW above

the previous diesel engine

(103TDI), with the new 130 kW

powerplant delivering new

heights of performance, boasting

a potent 380 Nm of torque. This

new, powerful engine is also ex-

tremely efficient, with a com-

bined cycle of 6.2 litres per

100km.

The new flagship model in the

Tiguan range is the 155TSI R-

Line model. Maintaining the same

performance-oriented TSI engine

featured in the range previously,

the new Tiguan R-Line receives a

plethora of additional equipment,

including 18-inch ‘Mallory’ alloy

wheels, Adaptive Chassis Control,

Vienna leather-appointed seat

upholstery and satellite naviga-

tion. In keeping with the R-Line

design cues seen in the Golf,

Beetle and Touareg models, the

Tiguan also receives signature

exterior styling including front

and rear bumpers, side sills and

roof spoiler, as well as the trade-

mark ‘R-Line’ badging.

For those customers looking to

enhance their 132TSI or 130TDI

Tiguan above the standard speci-

fication, an optional R-Line pack-

age is also available, which adds

unique 18-inch ‘Mallory’ alloy

wheels, R-Line exterior styling,

sport suspension, gearshift pad-

dles and an R-Line cloth interior.

The Tiguan’s 118 kW 1.4-litre TSI

engine is maintained in two-wheel

drive specification, attracting cus-

tomers who are looking for a styl-

ish yet economical SUV in an af-

fordable package. All other models

in the range (132TSI, 130TDI and

155TSI) feature Volkswagen’s in-

novative 4MOTION all-wheel drive

as standard.

Adding further value to the entire

Tiguan range, safety and conven-

ience technologies like a Rear

View Camera (RVC), a colour

touchscreen audio system and a

leather multi-function steering

wheel and Multi- Function Display

all come as standard. Fatigue de-

tection, previously reserved for

the higher-specification models,

now also features as standard

technology across the revised Ti-

guan range.

As with every Volkswagen, the

Tiguan provides high passenger

safety with daytime driving lights,

six airbags (front, front side and

curtain airbags) and safety opti-

mised front head restraints as

standard. The new

Tiguan also features Volkswagen’s

advanced technologies including

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS),

Auto Hold function, Brake Assist

and Electronic Brake-pressure Dis-

tribution (EBD). Safe driving in the

Tiguan is also accounted for with

features such as Anti-Slip Regula-

tion (ASR), Electronic Differential

Lock (EDL), Electronic Stabilisation

Program (ESP) and Engine Braking

Control (EBC) as standard.

A number of options are available

on the latest Tiguan, including an

electric glass panoramic sunroof,

leather appointed upholstery with

electric driver’s seat (std 155TSI R

-Line) and the RNS510 satellite

navigation system (std 115TSI R-

Line). Naturally the latest Tiguan

retains all the versatility and prac-

ticality for which the previous gen-

eration is renowned, being a five-

door, five-seater. The rear seat is

a 60:40 split bench that can be

adjusted forwards and backwards

by up to 16cm and also reclined,

while cargo capacity ranges from

395 to 1,510 litres.

Volkswagen

expands R-Line to

Golf Wagon

and Tiguan

Joining the Golf, Beetle and

Touareg R-Line models,

Volkswagen Australia has ex-

panded its line up of R-Line ve-

hicles to include Golf Wagon

and Tiguan models.

While the trademark R-Line styling

is visually present in every R-Line

model, each iteration in the range

has its own unique specification.

In the case of Golf, Golf Wagon,

Beetle and Tiguan, an R-Line

package is available as an option

on specific models within the

range; however also available in

the Tiguan and Touareg ranges

are standalone R-Line models, of-

fering enhanced performance with

higher-output engines. In this

case a 155 kW TSI engine in the

Tiguan, and a 250 kW V8 TDI in

the Touareg.

Adding unique R-Line-specific

equipment on top of the already

impressive lists of standard fea-

tures in each model range, the

Golf, Golf Wagon, Beetle, Tiguan

and Touareg R-Line vehicles offer

customers further levels of cus-

tomisation with a host of practical

and stylish enhancements.

Golf and Golf Wagon with op-

tional R-Line package

Volkswagen’s multi-award-winning

icon now receives an R-Line op-

tional package in both hatch and

wagon models. This builds on the

already premium levels of stand-

ard equipment of the Highline Golf

models (103TSI and 110TDI) with

the inclusion of unique 18-inch

‘Salvador’ alloy wheels, R-Line

steering wheel with paddle shift-

ers, R-Line interior trim complete

with sport seats with R-Line badg-

ing, stainless steel pedals and

sports suspension. Both hatch and

wagon models also receive R-Line

exterior body styling including

rear spoiler, front and rear bump-

ers and side sills. Progressive

steering is another feature of the

Golf and Golf Wagon R-Line mod-

els offering a noticeably more di-

rect and agile steering response in

dynamic driving situations.

Beetle with optional R-Line

package

The iconic Beetle also benefits

from an optional R-Line package

raising the level of equipment

above the standard vehicle in both

manual and DSG transmissions.

The Beetle R-Line package in-

cludes all the hallmark visual cues

of an R-Line model, including

unique front and rear bumpers, 18

-inch ‘Twister’ alloy wheels and R-

Line badging. Completing the

package inside are gearshift pad-

dles behind the steering wheel

(DSG models), sports instrumen-

tation on the dashboard which dis-

play the boost pressure, oil tem-

perature and a stopwatch, adding

a unique touch to the Beetle’s R-

Line package fit-out. As with all

models in the R-Line range, the

Beetle also comes with tinted rear

glass.

Tiguan 155TSI R-Line

At the very peak of the revised

Tiguan range, the 155 kW TSIp-

owered Tiguan R-Line sits as a

standalone model within the Ti-

guan family. On top of a high-

output petrol engine, the Tiguan R

-Line also receives all the signa-

ture R-Line styling, including front

and rear bumpers, 18-inch

‘Mallory’ alloy wheels and interior

trim with unique R-Line steering

wheel with gearshift paddles and

front door sill plates. Adding fur-

ther sporting credentials to the

Tiguan R-Line is the inclusion of

Adaptive Chassis Control, allowing

customers to select the type of

drive they require for their current

environment.

Tiguan with optional R-Line

package

Tiguan customers also have the

opportunity to enhance their

132TSI or 130TDI Tiguan with an

optional R-Line package. This in-

cludes all of the same features as

the pinnacle Tiguan R-Line, with

the exception of Adaptive Chassis

control, replaced instead with

sports suspension and leather

seats replaced by comfort sports

Alcantara/ cloth upholstery.

Touareg R-Line

The original Australian model in

the R-Line range is the Touareg

V8 TDI R-Line with 4MOTION all-

wheel drive. The V8 TDI R-Line

offers a more dynamic exterior

look with unique R-Line design

bumpers,

oval tailpipes and is equipped with

a powerful yet efficient 4.2-litre

V8 turbo diesel engine.

Exterior features include a tex-

tured “matt black” diffuser and

oval tailpipes, which are integrat-

ed into the redesigned bumper

section.

Finishing the look at the rear is a

custom roof edge spoiler. The

front also features a new spoiler

lip in R-Line design and complet-

ing the exterior look are 21-inch

‘Mallory’ alloy wheels and dark

tinted rear side windows and rear

window. Inside the Touareg V8,

the R-Line logo features on the

front stainless steel door sill plates

and on the heated leather rimmed

multifunction steering wheel with

gear shift paddles. Rounding out

the stylish design are stainless

steel pedals and a leather gear

shift knob with aluminium inserts.

In addition, the Touareg V8 TDI

also comes with Comfort Package

and Driver Assistance Package

(except Lane Assist) as standard

adding even further value and

safety to an already highly

equipped car. The Comfort

Package consists of a four-zone

automatic climate control dual-air

conditioning system, electrically

adjustable door mirrors with

memory function, automatic kerb

view function when reversing,

electrically adjustable front seats

with three position memory func-

tion for driver and front passenger

(electrically height and reach ad-

justable), along with a heated

steering wheel with memory and

keyless entry.

The Driver Assistance Package in-

cludes Volkswagen’s innovative

safety systems which include

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

with Front Assist function and City

Emergency brake (City EB) func-

tion, Side Assist (lane

changing assistant) and the proac-

tive occupant protection system.

Fitted with nine airbags, ASR, EDL

and ESP with active rollover pro-

tection function, EBC and Off-road

Function with Anti-lock Braking

System (ABSplus) and Hill Decent

Assist as standard and combined

with the Driver Assistance Pack-

age, the V8 Touareg truly offers

class leading safety.

Winners in

Spain! Ogier and

Ingrassia defend WRC

title with

Volkswagen Wolfsburg: A big day for Sébas-

tien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia. A

big day for Volkswagen. With

their victory at the Rally Spain,

the old world champions have

been crowned the new world

champions*. After their seventh

victory of the season, the 23rd of

their career, the French duo can-

not be caught in the overall

standings of the FIA World Rally

Championship. Not even by their

team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala/

Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN), who with

second place in Spain clinched

the tenth one-two victory for

Volkswagen in the WRC and

staged a thrilling battle with their

team-mates for the rally win. Go-

ing into the WRC finale at the

Rally Great Britain, Ogier/

Ingrassia have extended their

lead over Latvala/Anttila to 31

points. Only 28 of those can be

reduced in three weeks' time. In

the “mini final”, Andreas Mik-

kelsen/Ola Fløene also achieved

an early result with seventh place

in Spain – no one can push An-

dreas Mikkelsen out of third place

in the drivers' standings.

The crowning glory: Ogier/

Ingrassia new kings of the

rally world

World champions in the drivers'

and co-drivers' standings for the

second time in a row: Sébastien

Ogier and Julien Ingrassia are on-

ly the fourth duo since 1977 to

have successfully defended their

title. This made the ninth time of

popping champagne corks for

Ogier and Ingrassia this season

all the more special on the podi-

um at the Rally Spain: Seven vic-

tories and two second places se-

cured them the early title victory.

In 2013 Ogier and Ingrassia won

the titles in the drivers' and co-

drivers' standings with

Volkswagen. They are now the

eighth duo to be added to the list

of double world champions. Be-

fore them Walter Röhrl, Juha

Kankkunen, Miki Biasion, Carlos

Sainz, Tommi Mäkinen, Marcus

Grönholm and Sébastien Loeb

achieved more than one world

championship title.

Icing on the cake: The battle

of the season was the battle

for the Rally Spain

Sébastien Ogier and Julien In-

grassia's team-mates didn't ex-

actly make it easy for them to

defend the title before the end of

the season. Jari-Matti Latvala/

Miikka Anttila kept up the pres-

sure until the finish line. It was

clear going into the Rally Spain:

If Ogier finished before Latvala,

the title would be decided. If it

was the other way around, the

concluding Rally Great Britain

would be the grand finale. An ap-

propriately thrilling duel devel-

oped right up until the final day.

While Latvala/Anttila lost 36.6

seconds on gravel on Friday, on

the following two days on asphalt

they reduced this to 11.3 seconds

bit by bit.

It’s all in the mix: Gravel and

asphalt make for a unique

challenge

138.54 kilometres on gravel,

234.42 on asphalt – the Rally

Spain is a real challenge for driv-

(Continued on page 41)

ers, co-drivers and teams alike.

Besides needing a good feel for

the gravel, total precision on as-

phalt is required – without any

time for the drivers to adjust.

Also typically Spanish: On the

gravel stages on Friday the

clouds of dust stirred up hung

around in the windless conditions

between the hills and limited visi-

bility. On Saturday the special

stage “Escaladei” that was driven

twice was a focal point of the Ral-

ly Spain. In unusually warm tem-

peratures, the 50-kilometre long-

est stage pushed the asphalt

tyres to their limits.

Record for Volkswagen: elev-

en victories in one WRC sea-

son

Twelfth rally, eleventh victory –

with the success at the Rally

Spain, Volkswagen secured an-

other top spot in the FIA World

Rally Championship (WRC) rank-

ings. Eleven victories in one sea-

son equals Citroën's previous two

best results (2005 – eleven out of

16 rallies; 2008 – eleven out of

15 rallies). One rally before the

end of the season and

Volkswagen has already achieved

the highest winning ratio in WRC

history. At least eleven out of a

possible 13 victories means a rate

of 84.61 percent – a solitary top

score.

XXL team performance: the

mechanics’ rally

The mechanics' performance at

the Rally Spain was also record-

breaking. On Friday evening they

modified the Polo R WRCs from a

gravel to asphalt set-up in less

than 75 minutes. Exactly how

much effort is required, a task

usually completed in an hour, is

illustrated by the number of indi-

vidual components that were

swapped. The mechanics swapped

a total of 13 components that are

made up of 1348 parts on each

car – making a total of 4044 on

all three Polo R WRC. The Rally

Spain is the only rally on the WRC

calendar that is held on both

gravel and asphalt, and the ser-

vice on Friday evening is the

longest that is scheduled for the

season.

Statistics update – the Rally

Spain facts

14 of 17 special stages won, 20

additional top 3 times achieved –

Volkswagen added more success-

es to their statistics at the Rally

Spain. The number of special

stage victories now stands at 327

out of a possible 463. With regard

to top 3 times, the number in-

creased to 751 out of a possible

1313 since first competing with

the Polo R WRC at the Rally Mon-

te Carlo in 2013. For Volkswagen

it was the 21st rally victory in 25

WRC appearances and the 39th

and 40th podium spots.

The Volkswagen drivers’ favourite

discipline: the power stage

Bonus points are particularly ap-

pealing to the Volkswagen driv-

ers. Bonus points, which are

awarded to the top three for the

drivers' and co-drivers' standings,

have gone to drivers of a Polo R

WRC 43 times on 24 power stag-

es. At the Rally Spain, Jari-Matti

Latvala/Miikka Anttila bagged the

three points for the best time,

one went to Andreas Mikkelsen/

Ola Fløene.

Quotes from the day 03 at the

Rally Spain

Sébastien Ogier, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #1

“It's a fantastic feeling to become

world champion for a second

time! I'm over the moon, it was a

real battle to defend the title. In

particular, my team-mate Jari-

Matti Latvala showed an incredi-

bly strong performance in the last

few months. Now Julien and I

have a great sense of happiness

and relief. Big thanks to our fan-

tastic team at Volkswagen. Not

just for giving us a fantastic car

throughout the season. But also

for the unique solidarity that we

have. It doesn't matter whether

things are going well or badly –

the team stands by every driver

crew and that is extremely moti-

vating. I'm happy and proud to be

part of this team. Today we will

have a big world championship

party, that much is clear!”

“Congrats to Sébastien Ogier and

Julien Ingrassia, they showed a

strong performance here in Spain

and deserve to be world champi-

ons. My co-driver Miikka and I

tried to keep the fight for the title

open for as long as possible. Un-

fortunately we lost too much time

on gravel on Friday for us to be

able to make up the deficit on as-

phalt. I was very happy with our

performance on asphalt, but we

still have some work to do on

loose gravel. We'll deal with that

when we are next testing, but first

the whole Volkswagen team will

party hard this evening.”

Andreas Mikkelsen, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #9

“First I'd like to congratulate my

team-mates Sébastien Ogier and

Julien Ingrassia on winning the

title. They prevailed despite Jari-

Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila

not making it easy for them. Hats

off to them for that performance

too. With regard to my own rally,

I intended to do more than finish

seventh. However, I'm happy with

the result. A flat tyre on Saturday

cost me more than two minutes

on Saturday. If that hadn't hap-

pened I might have made it onto

the podium. It was unlucky. Then

all that was left was for me to

fight Thierry Neuville for sixth

place. In the end we lost that bat-

tle because we were too late

starting the final stage and re-

ceived a ten second time penalty.

But at least we got a point in the

power stage – for Ola, who is still

fighting for third place in the co-

drivers' standings.”

Jost Capito, director of Volkswagen Motorsport “A worthy winner of a fantastic

battle throughout the season.

Sébastien Ogier and Julien In-

grassia are deserved old and new

World Rally Champions*. They

withstood the pressure from Jari-

Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila

perfectly, managed their ad-

vantage cleverly, and emerged

victorious from this battle. That

deserves the utmost respect. All

three drivers showed an outstand-

ing performance, unfortunately

Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Fløene

were a bit unlucky on Saturday

and lost more than two minutes

through no fault of their own.

With eleven victories in one sea-

son, Volkswagen has set a new

record. That's thanks to the whole

team, on site, in Hannover and in

Wolfsburg. All in all a great day

for Séb, Julien and Volkswagen.”

And then there were ...

... the most beautiful dents imagi-

nable for chassis 21. In Spain this

particular Polo R WRC was used

for Sébastien Ogier and Julien In-

grassia for the sixth time this sea-

son. One of its highlights: the Ral-

ly Australia. The World Rally Car

had a lot to put up with there –

seven team members celebrating

on its roof after Volkswagen se-

cured the manufacturers' title* in

the WRC. Although the roof was

fixed properly afterwards, you can

still just about see the dents.

Talking about today: New dents

were added thanks to Sébastien

Ogier/Julien Ingrassia's second

title.

And then there were also ...

... 150 employees from the

Volkswagen plant in Pamplona/

Spain. The body in white for the

Polo R WRC, on which the World

Rally Cars are based, is made in

Pamplona. Invited by Volkswagen

Spain, the employees attended

the twelfth race of the FIA World

Rally Championship (WRC) season

in their home country and saw

their three Polo R WRCs in action.
