    ASSIGNMENT 2: Make a Short Film

    Submission Mode: QuickTime file in BAM 2 Video 1 server dropbox, 1024 x 576,ProRes422, AIF 48htz, with x5 second each leader and out.

    Percentage Weighting:This assignment contributes 50% to the final course result

    Outline:You will make a x1 minute short film (exactly x60 seconds and zero frames) based onthe documents completed in Assignment 1 with an additional 10 seconds of black for acombined leader and outs. You will use either Digital Video (DV) or High DefinitionVideo (HDV format 1440 x 1080) or HD Video (1920 x 1080) or 35mm still images (HighRes files) to record your short film and edit this footage at its native resolution on yourFinal Cut Pro timeline before exporting at the nominate rate. This may be captured via astandard video camera, DSLR, or a mobile media device.

    You will use industry standard conventions in film-making (narrative based only) payingattention to the fundamentals of cinematography, directing, acting, lighting, and otherstandard production values.

    You will use MiniDV tapes or memory cards to record your footage and label alltapes/discs clearly in the appropriate manner suggested to you in class.

    Assessment Criteria:

    You will be assessed individuallyon the basis of:

    50% Originality and strength of narrative 30% Technical skills 20% Industry standards compliance

    Overview of Assessment

    You will receive one of the following grades in assessment.

    Fail (NN) 0-49% Pass (PA) 50-59% Credit (CR) 60-69% Distinction (DI) 70-79% High Distinction (HD) 80-100%

    Late Submission

    Late submission will incur a 5% reduction of marks per business day including publicholidays and semester breaks unless you have special consideration granted.

    Attendance and Information Intake

    You are required to attend all scheduled lectures and take notes on the presentation inclass, read and refer to the lecture notes where applicable, and watch and take notesabout the movie or AV screenings where approrpriate. In addition to this you arestrongly advised to engage with the recommended reading list located in the courseguide for additional information where appropriate. A combination of this will formulatethe answers to the assignment questions.

    Lecture Format

    Each class will combine watching videos, practical demonstrations, note taking,discussions, activities and tasks.

    Grievances

    If you are unclear or do not understand the assignments and or course content pleaseask me in class or email me at [email protected] and I will do my best toprovide a concise and helpful response.

    If you are in dispute about your assignment result you can ask for the assignment to beresubmitted to an external examiner for review. This process requires you to formallyemail me as the Video 1 course coordinator and request for resubmission. The processmay take several weeks and there is no guarantee that your amended grade will behigher.

    Feedback

    Each assignment will receive a feedback sheet outlining a breakdown of assessmentand written comments. Please be patient in receiving this document within semesterweeks.

    Production values

    Your assignment will gain better marks if you produce a work with high productionvalues that include: title safe credits and text, deinterlaced image, balanced sound,appropriately transcoded footage free of artefacts, noise and pixilation, succinct editing,two seconds of black at either end of your in and out points, and adherence to theassignment brief.

    Filming Protocols and Compliance

    Do not make any films, or engage with filming that contravenes any laws or filmingprotocols. If you want to film or work with anyone under 18 then you must obtain aworking with children permit prior.

    Insurance

    All RMIT students are covered off campus by a Public Liability Insurance policy withregards to coursework activities. A copy of the current RMIT Certificate of Currencymust be included in the Assignment 1 production folder. You must be in possession ofthis folder and certificate at all times during your production.

    Filming Permits

    If you decide to film outside the permitter of your accommodation (example: your frontfence etc.) you are required by Victorian Law to apply for a filming permit to theappropriate agency. This is non negotiable. Usually, this body will be the governingcouncil (see examples below) unless otherwise stated. There is a fee involved in doingso which can be up to $5000 per day depending on what is required (street closuresetc.) however if you apply as a student with limited equipment and crew/actors then thefee is usually waved if not please let me know so I can call on your behalf to askfor a fee waiver.

    Filming on trains, trams, planes, near or in transportation terminuses, tram stops, andbus stops, also needs a permit.

    Some places are off limits for production filming without a permit including airports,government and military installations, shopping centres, medical clinics and hospitalsincluding procedures and surgery (my camera was confiscated for filming at mydaughters birth), courts and legal precincts, fire stations, and ambulances to name afew.

    Software and Computers

    You are provided access to postproduction software on our computers, which includeAfter Effects, Photoshop, and Final Cut Pro. If you wish to use your own software andcomputer please make sure that they are compatible with the RMIT versions andoperating system (OSX).

    After Hours Lab Access

    BAAIM mac labs are available after hours between Monday Friday and on limitedweekend access. You do not need to make a weekday booking however please haveyour student card available at all times after hours

    Cameras and Equipment

    You are provided free of charge access to video cameras, still cameras, soundrecording, lighting, and animation equipment. This can be loaned from the BAAIMLoans office located in 5.3.6. If you require a booking please make this request inperson to the loans store staff direct.

    Hard Drive Failure

    If your hard drive(s) fails and all assignment data is lost, corrupted, or compromised atany point during the semester this will not be a reason for the special considerationprocess if the event arises. Please ensure that all data is backed up and archived on aseparate media storage device.
