We’re excited to announce that Lyndarum residents will soon have access to a brand new Family and Children’s Services centre.

New Family & Children’s Services Centre is on the way.

The City of Whittlesea have appointed a builder to commence the

$6 million project, and ground work has already begun.

The facility will provide Lyndarum with access to a huge range of

services to support the health and wellbeing of infants, children

and families. The new centre will have two registered kindergarten

rooms for a total of 66 children, outdoor play spaces, two maternal

and child health consulting rooms as well as general amenities,

off-street car and bicycle parking, pedestrian links and

landscaping. Located at 2 Kyabram Street, the facility is expected

to be completed by late 2013 with the first preschool enrolments

to be accepted in 2014.

Students get Lyndarum back on trackStudents at Epping Views Primary School are teaching us what ‘sharing is caring’ actually means, by opening their brand new running track to the local community.

The 403 metre synthetic track has two lanes and hosts the weekly morning walking club, athletics training, fitness sessions and physical education classes. It seems, however, that the students don’t want to be the only ones having all the fun.

School principal Pauline Kubat is happily welcoming all members of the Lyndarum community to make the most of this great community asset – but only outside of school hours of course.

We look forward to seeing you there for a sprint or two.

Yellow Split Pea & Frankfurter soup by NigellaServes 6-8

Ingredients:

Method:

1. Peel and chop the onion, carrot and garlic then put them all, along with a roughly cut up stick of celery into food processor and blitz until all are finely chopped.

2. Heat oil on medium heat in heavy-based wide saucepan.

3. Add the chopped vegetables from the processor and cook for 5-10 minutes, until soft but not coloured.

4. Add the ground mace, give a good stir and then add the split peas and stir it all again.

5. Pour 1.25 litres stock into the pan, add the bay leaves, and then bring to the boil. Cover, turn down the heat and cook for about an hour until everything is tender – adding more stock as needed. Taste for seasoning once everything’s ready.

6. You can add the frankfurters anyway you wish. Nigella suggests the easiest way is to cut them into slices throw them into the soup then heat until warm.

7. Bon appetite.

New place of solitude will be one to rememberIn more good news from Epping Views, the Memorial Sensory Garden, is scheduled to be completed and opened by the end of this year.

This will be a place for all Lyndarum residents to visit and enjoy, stimulate the senses, and/or quietly contemplate life’s big questions.

The garden will feature beautiful war and peace themed mosaic stepping stones, indigenous plants to encourage native animals, as well as a range of other ‘garden experiences’, including a large pond and an Oriental garden where you can rake sand patterns and make different designs.

We’d like to give a big thanks to the new Woolworths and the local Epping RSL for their contributions, as well as the City of Whittlesea for providing a grant to allow grade 6 students from Epping Views Primary School to work with artists on the design and creation of the mosaic stepping stones.

1 onion 1 carrot1 clove garlic1 stick of celery 2-3 tbsp vegetable oil 1/2 tsp ground mace

500g yellow split peas1.25-1.5 ltr chicken or veg stock2 bay leavesApprox. 8 frankfurters

Bbbrrrreaking into a sweat this winterDespite the winter cold and dwindling motivation, it is important that we remain active and stay healthy. And what better way to do so than by jumping on your trusty bike.

Our suggestion is to join The Whittlesea Bicycle Users Group (BUG) and partake in a guided bike ride of the city’s many paths. The group follow various routes utilising both the off-road & paved cycling infrastructure to make sure all riders are catered for. Plus you get to ride with others and avoid braving the cold solo. Various start locations are used with scheduled rides on Saturdays, Sundays and twilight rides during daylight saving.

“We aim to advocate for better cycling facilities, provide information for cyclists and to allow more opportunities for people to get on their bikes, get active, and enjoy our fine city”, said a spokesperson for the Whittlesea BUG.

The Whittlesea BUG is an initiative of the Northern Transport Links project. Although it is a non-profit organisation they do ask members to contribute a $5 yearly membership fee to assist with maintaining a current insurance policy, to improving local conditions for cyclists and to improve the co-operation between road and path users.

For further information visit the Whittlesea Bicycle Users Group website at http://www.whittleseabug.org.au/

Pet Profile Do you think your pet is cute? Every newsletter we will be profiling a residents pet. In this edition we have Fibi my family dog. Here is her profile.

Origin: The Hovawart Dog originates from Germany. It is a very old working breed descended from the Newfoundland, Leonberger, and possibly the Hungarian Kuvasz. Coat colours come in black and gold, black or blond.

Temperament: The Hovawart has a strong bark. They will be calm inside the house provided they receive enough daily exercise. Determined, obedient, and affectionate, especially towards its master. Loyal to the family, excellent with children when they are well-socialized, well exercised and see humans as alpha. They are highly devoted and have a strong sense of territory and will not generally wander far away. They remain playful and puppy-like in old age and are reserved with strangers. Good natured and even-tempered, the Hovawart is protective, alert, and a good watchdog. It will protect your property against intruders with great passion. When its handler indicates that visitors are welcome, it will accept them immediately. Intelligent, they can be trained to a high degree, learning quickly what you expect of them.

Height: 58-70 cm.

Weight: 25-51 kg.

Living Conditions: They are moderately active indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard. They prefer cool climates and can sleep outdoors.

Exercise: They need to be taken on a long daily walk, jog or run.

Life Expectancy: About 10-14 years.

Grooming: The Hovawart’s coat is easy to groom and it is an average shedder.
