The Village of Lansing has recently made an upgrade to their communication system with the implementation of an upgraded app. What does this mean?

Connecting with the Village of Lansing is as easy as a click on your smartphone! The Village has upgraded their free mobile phone application that allows residents with smart phones to communicate directly with staff. Now you can resolve issues in the Village and keep up to date with the news you need to know about Lansing. You can point, click and send photos of graffiti, potholes, uncut grass and other code violations.

The app is available for the iPhone and Android phones. Once your account is set up, the app allows users to choose an option to receive updates on the status of their request.

The world has shifted to mobile and there are now more mobile devices on earth than people! The Village of Lansing has partnered with CityByApp to offer a convenient “hyper-local” mobile app for residents, visitors, businesses, government, and community organizations to obtain and share information about everything going on in

Lansing. Now, things to do, places to visit, jobs, promotional offers, news, weather, traffic,

shop local, emergency preparedness information are at your fingertips.

Community residents and visitors will love this app because it is FREE to download and allows them access to what’s happening in Lansing instantly from their iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Business owners will love our App because they can showcase their events, videos, social media pages, jobs, veteran’s discounts, coupons, deals, etc. Plus, they can expand their market exposure for a nominal monthly or discounted annual fee payable to CityByApp.

The Lansing Chamber of Commerce has already partnered with CityByApp to showcase their membership directory, publications and events. There’s a lot of power packed in our

app. In addition to all the city information, our app includes GPS, issue

reporting, Yelp and more. And we’re always adding more features so the Village of Lansing App becomes the “go to” source for what people want and need to know about the Village of Lansing. Download it today!

The Village of Lansing is offering up to 4 free rain barrels through a partnership with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.

Rain barrels are a type of green infrastructure that capture rainwater from your roof and save it for when you need it. By

keeping this water out of the sewer system, rain barrels can also help prevent sewer backups and basement overflows. You can use rain barrel water to wash your car, water your lawn and plants, or clean work boots and tools. Rain barrel water is naturally free of chlorine, lime, and calcium. The 55-gallon

drums are designed to go under the downspout of a

home.The barrels come in

four colors and include instructions on their

installation. Residents can NOW pick up applications in the Building Department at the municipal center at 3141 Ridge Road or fill them out and submit them online via our website.

The program has been incredibly successful in other communities. Rain barrels are free of charge for residents of Lansing.

Two lansing Residents Recognized with Annual Award

2015 Senior of the Year Kenneth Hodge (right) with Unit Commander, Major Gary Sprigg.

2015 Cadet of the Year Carter Steinweg (right) with Unit Commander, Major Gary Sprigg.

On January 15th, Civil Air Patrol’s Thunder Composite Squadron members Carter Steinweg and Kenneth Hodge, both of Lansing, reached top awards at the annual Group 2 Military Ball held in Orland Park, IL. Each year, both a Cadet and an adult member are nominated by their Unit Commander for an award recognizing the top “Cadet of the Year” and “Senior Member of the Year” based on their achievements during the previous year.

Carter Steinweg was awarded the “Cadet of the Year” for Thunder Composite Squadron by his Unit Commander, Major Gary Sprigg. Steinweg, who joined in 2014, has served as an example for the other youth in the program. He has steadily

progressed through the program, participated in every training opportunity which has qualified him to be able to join in “search and rescue” missions for downed aircraft or missing persons and, most recently, assumed the duty position of First Sergeant.

Kenneth Hodge was awarded the “Senior Member of the Year” for Thunder Composite Squadron in recognition of his numerous contributions to the Unit since joining just last year. Hodge has taken the reins for recruiting for the Unit, established a fundraising program with Wreaths Across America and spear-headed creating a team for the annual CyberPatriot competition held nationwide by the Air Force Association. Under Hodge, the

team from Thunder Composite Squadron advanced to the State finals in its first year.

The Civil Air Patrol “Cadet Program,” one of three aspects of the organization, is geared at teaching today’s youth to be “leaders of tomorrow.” Adult members, like Hodge, help lay the foundation for the program and Cadet members, like Steinweg, not only learn from them but then use those skills to teach the new members that join the Unit.

Thunder Composite Squadron meets every Wednesday from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. at Heritage Middle School in Lansing with members from surrounding communities such as Lansing, Mokena, Lynwood, Dyer, Munster and Schererville.

Visible Music College with a home campus in Memphis Tennessee and its newest campus right here in Lansing has recently been recognized as one of the top 20 worship schools in the country! They offer three bachelor degree programs in music business, music production, and music performance. The goal is to equip aspiring Worship Leaders for effective service in the music industry and the Church. Christian musicians, producers, managers and industry professionals must be well developed equally in these three areas to find success in life, career and ministry. Congratulations to them on this significant recognition as they continue to become involved in all aspects of volunteerism in the Lansing community.

You may be familiar with our annual Community Clean-Up Day, but this year the Village of Lansing will also be helping residents with their own “clean-up”. In conjunction with the volunteer trash pickup that will be going on throughout the Village on April 30th, this will also mark our first Community Shred Day and Electronics Recycling Day.

Have you been wondering what to do with that old computer or television, and those boxes of old documents that contain private information? April 30th will be your chance to properly dispose of both at NO CHARGE! No need to call or register, just arrive at Village Hall between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon with your items!

Our document shredding event, sponsored by HOMEWOOD DISPOSAL, will allow residents to drop off up to 5 boxes of paper-based material to be securely shred. Your private information is properly safeguarded and documents will be shred on-site the day of the event.

The electronics recycling drop-off, sponsored by ALLIANCE DEMOLITION and in cooperation with VetTech.US, will offer residents the opportunity to dispose of small household electronic equipment that is no longer allowed in landfills. The e-waste collected by VetTech.US is used

in their free IT Training program for veterans. Your old electronics will help military veterans learn as they work toward their IT certifications.

Also, many of the items collected are refurbished and given to community and charitable organizations as well as families in need.

These FREE events are only available to Lansing residents. Residency will be verified by your current Village of Lansing sticker in the window of your vehicle. If you have any questions, please

feel free to call 708-895-7208 for more information.

The Lansing Police Department will once again be a drop off location for expired medications on April 30th, 2016 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at 2710 170th Street. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that

languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.

Turn in your unused or expired medication forsafe disposal

The seventh Annual Lansing Roundball Classic was a huge success.

The tournament highlighted fifth-grade boys basketball teams from several area schools and also features a fifth-grade girls Hot Shot Contest conducted during halftime of each game.

The Roundball Classic was created as a way to bring the community together through friendly competition and cooperation between the schools. It involves volunteer hours from several Lansing organizations working the concession area. All proceeds from the tournament are donated to Lansing-based charities.

The entire tournament takes place at Memorial Junior High School, with six participating schools — Oak Glen, Reavis,

Coolidge, Lansing Christian, Heritage, and St. Paul of Munster all competing for the championship and coveted traveling trophy. This year’s championship game pitted St. Paul vs. Coolidge in the championship game which went down to the wire and St. Paul won 26-25! “It was the most competitive game I have ever seen for 5th grade basketball and a testament to these kids” said, Rick Seymour. The 5th Grade hotshot winner this year was Brianna Hill from Oak Glen who set a Hot Shot record by making a shot from every spot on the court including half court! The School Spirit Award was won by Coolidge this year as well.

Each school conducted a food drive and compete to see

which school could bring in the most food for the can food drive. St. Ann’s won this year’s contest by bringing in an average of 8 cans per student enrolled at the school! The total cans collected were 6,430 for all schools! All non-perishable items donated went to the Lansing Food Pantry, which serves those in need in the community of Lansing. Several

local charities also received financial donations from the efforts of the tournament which accounted for nearly $5,200. A big thank you goes to Sally Reynolds and Rick Seymour, the organizers of the event and also all the sponsors, youth, schools and families that were involved to make this year’s event so incredible!

Know the Facts about Flooding

lansing Public library migrates to SWAN

Flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster in the United States.

Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of their flood risk and how to prepare for a flood.

This checklist provides useful information on how to financially prepare before a flood event.

Review your current insurance policies to see if coverage is provided for flood damage to your home and its contents.

Most homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage, so be sure to purchase flood insurance to cover both your property and contents.

Ensure that medical and financial records—including your insurance policy— are in a waterproof container and store

additional copies in a separate secure location.

Create a contact card small enough

to put in a wallet with important names and

numbers to use in case of an emergency.

Establish a disaster procedure and family communications plan to

share with your family members.

SWAN is a shared library catalog that lists the holding of all 79 member libraries.

The Lansing Public Library is pleased to announce that on April 19, 2016 they will be re-joining all the area libraries in the SWAN consortium. SWAN is a shared library catalog that lists the holding of all 79 member libraries. Lansing residents will

no longer need to search two catalogs to see what they and the other area libraries own. This was all made possible with a generous grant from RAILS (Reaching Across Illinois Library System) to foster sharing of materials. Lansing Public Library was a founding member of SWAN and is thrilled to be returning to SWAN!

“Balloon sinuplasty is a breakthroughprocedure that relieves the pain andpressure associated with chronic sinusitis,”Dr. Cherukuri told the Times. “For selectcandidates, sinuplasty can result in long termrelief. Since it is done in-office, the patientavoids the anesthesia, risks, and downtime oftraditional sinus surgery.”

Minimally invasiveNew patients provide their medical history, andthen receive a thorough examination of thenasal and sinus cavities. Based on the results,a CT scan may be ordered to complete theworkup.

Many patients experience a narrowing of thepathway into the maxillary sinus, while otherssuffer from blockage in the frontal sinus. Bothproblems are treated with a balloon probe thatopens the area without tearing the mucosa.

Fast resultsThe balloon sinuplasty is performed in theoffice under a local anesthetic. That reducesthe risk for patients who have adversereactions to anesthesia.

Post-operative bleeding, pain, and recoverytime are minimal.

“Most patients return to normal activities inone or two days,” Dr. Cherukuri said.

Compared to the ten-day recovery period fromnormal sinus surgery, the difference is nothingshort of revolutionary.

Dr. Cherukuri added that patients do not havethe discomfort of nasal packing.

“Traditional surgery results in nasal packingup to seven days,” he said. “Patients have acertain amount of discomfort from the packing, and the removal process.”

Balloon sinuplasty opens the nasal cavities andallows them to heal properly, eliminating therecurrent infections.

Covered by InsuranceTo date, over 160,000 patients have been treatedsafely and successfully with balloon sinuplasty.Ninety-five percent of patients surveyed weresatisfied with the procedure. Medicare andmost insurances cover the procedure.

“Our patients have been very happy,” he said.“Balloon sinuplasty is not for everyone. But forthose who are good candidates, the results aresignificant and permanent.”

Those suffering from chronic sinusitis nowhave an alternative to the cycle of symptomatictreatment that results in frustration.
