THE CHALLENGE Virgin Money offers financial products to customers across the UK. It is one of the best-rated retail banks for customer satisfaction with a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of +40 in 2017, up from +29 in 2016. Virgin Money’s business ambition is to make “everyone better off” and this philosophy extends to giving its employees the best possible experience at work.

Virgin Money was looking for a solution that would support it with learning and development and performance management – setting goals and objectives for individual employees and the wider organisation. It has three key areas of focus – supporting employee workflow and day-to-day goals, achieving regulatory compliance, and driving its EBO (everyone better off) objectives, which define the behaviours expected of employees. These include “team player”, where employees look to improve their productivity by improving their collaboration skills, and “looking for the win-win”, where employees are encouraged to develop soft skills such as empathy.

The financial services firm had begun to encounter issues with its previous system that was over 10 years old. It was no longer confident that its eLearning solution would support it fully in achieving regulatory compliance. The legacy system did not have the flexibility to provide the management information that the organisation needed and lacked the ability to support performance management.

THE SOLUTION Virgin Money implemented a cloud-based Saba solution to provide flexible, mobile learning delivery and performance management. It delivered the transformation to the cloud incrementally, drip feeding regulatory eLearning modules through the system in the first instance. Virgin Money is able to remind employees when regulatory training is due and has a clear picture of the regulatory training position.

As part of the FCA certification “regime”, Virgin Money’s “Be Safe” initiative sets goals for senior management and individual employees to ensure they are working in a compliant manner. The reporting elements of the Saba solution help Virgin Money easily produce reports that demonstrate to regulators exactly how it is ensuring compliance. Some of the reports that Virgin Money needs to produce are highly complex and to create these reports the business information team is able to get a raw data feed directly from the Saba solution. Virgin Money now has the assurance that it can provide all the reports needed regarding its regulatory position, on demand.

Virgin Money has adopted some of the wider Virgin group values, such as “insatiable curiosity”. Saba’s “Impressions” toolkit is helping drive peer recognition of employees who are living company values. Through the platform, employees can identify opportunities to attend workshops that would give them a deeper understanding of a particular value – and recognise each other for good work that reflects specific values. The data from this platform also supports the company’s talent management, as it can easily identify high performers.

Saba’s To-Do list feature is also helping drive talent mobility and knowledge sharing across the organisation. Individual employees create a CV-style profile, including their learning and development plans and performance targets, which may be shared with others. This might open up a dialogue with a mentor who can suggest coaching or stretch objectives to enable the employee to develop their career into a different area of the organisation, if that is what they want.

The Employee Pulse Survey feature of the Saba toolkit is enabling Virgin Money to push out customised surveys, either to the whole company or to get an understanding of sentiment in specific departments. The Pulse surveys do not just focus on engagement levels but are a tool for evaluation, enabling employees to provide feedback on career development activities, for example.

Every company says they want to engage, motivate and inspire their people. As we see it, the problem is not that they can’t – it’s that they don’t have the environment that really enables their top talent to thrive. Saba creates that environment, with talent development solutions that put people and teams in the driver’s seat of their own experience, while staying aligned to your business goals. And delivering deep performance insights that connect people to business success, like no one else can. Saba. The Talent Development Company.

The Saba Experience:

THE BENEFITS As well as achieving regulatory compliance, Virgin Money is firmly focused on developing the soft skills and behaviours necessary to drive the success of a digital business. Employees can now access the relevant eLearning content from the Saba platform or tap into the coaching and mentoring features. Saba reporting facilities allow Virgin Money to see at a glance which behaviours are under development – and which ones are not. At an organisation and team level, it is clear what behaviours are being worked on. A heavy concentration on one type of behaviour within one area might flag up a broader issue.

As Virgin Money continues to expand into the digital banking experience for its customers, Saba’s cloud-based learning and performance management solution is helping it to provide ongoing development for its employees who will drive its future in the digital financial space.

It also plans to drive the social aspects of the Saba Cloud solution – encouraging employees to from learning and development groups and to promote blogging on the platform. Using Saba Cloud, Virgin Money is now providing an enhanced colleague experience, combining the performance and learning needed to drive the organisation’s ambitions.
